(More customer reviews)This movie is very funny. Appreciating it's dry, intelligent humor you will like it more every time you watch it. The characters portray a range of human traits that are humorous because we all know people representative of those traits. The acting was especially good on the part of Luke Wilson and Drew Barrymore. Wilson is so natural at it. His facial expressions are hilarious when his character is uncomfortable. His body language reminds me of what Jimmy Stewart does in some of his comedies. And Drew acts with charm and believability. Try watching the movie in closed-captioned you may notice more of the mumbled language that makes the movie funnier.
There are a lot of funny things but you have to pay attention to catch them. There is a scene where the sheriff and his deputy are walking away from a dead person in an old drive-in movie theater and they walk zig zag around the benches to get back to their car instead of climbling over them. One scene show Luke's character, Dorian, thinking of hamburger assembly while at a funeral.
Enjoy all the little subtle things: the trailing off conversations, the facial expressions, the body language. It's funny in real life so it's funny here too.

Private Benjamin (Full Screen Edition) (1980) Review

(More customer reviews)Along with "Foul Play" this is one of Goldie Hawn's finest hours, playing a rich, pampered widow who is duped into joining the army. An hysterical comedy who's format has been returned to time and again, but never quite to this effect. Eileen Brennan is equally fantastic as the tough army officer you love to hate. I've been awaiting the release of this film on DVD for some time (along with Foul Play which hasn't yet been released), and it's here that I felt disappointed.For one, the only released version of this is in Standard Pan & Scan. I know some of you out there still cling to this outmoded format, but for the rest of us, this is unacceptable. At the very least, it should have been dual sided, with Widescreen on one side and Standard on the other. Secondly, they've done nothing with soundtrack other than present in Dolby Stereo 2.0. I realize that with some older titles, they don't bother to remaster the soundtrack in 5.0 (let alone DTS - the Ultimate sound format for your buck!), but I still think it's very lame that they do this. Anyway, there is a trailer, at least, but don't expect any deleted scenes, bloopers, or any other fancy features. The film can also be heard in French, but Spanish would also have been nice (there are at least Spanish subtitles). They've priced this relatively low (I guess because they knew what a lame job they did with it), but I'd have preferred a bit more of a higher price if it meant little more effort on their part for this truly classic comedy. Let's hope that "Foul Play" offers a lot more when it's finally released.

Grumpier Old Men (1995) Review

(More customer reviews)"Grumpy Old Men" has been one of my favorite comedy movies since I first saw it when it came out. Therefore, I couldn't wait to see "Grumpier Old Men," the sequel. It's pretty much just like the first one except with more laughs and some new faces. In this one, Max (Walter Matthau) has a son (Kevin Pollak) and John (Jack Lemmon) has a daughter (Daryl Hannah). Max's son and John's daughter are supposed to be getting married soon. Ann Margaret returns in this one and another new person is Sophia Loren along with her Italian mom. Best of all, Grandpa Gustafson returns with his hilarious one-liners in this sequel.
"Grumpier Old Men" is even funnier than the first movie was, and the new people fit in with the original cast perfectly. Everybody does a great job of acting. There's a lot of parts in the movie that are unforgettable once you see them such as when Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon temporarily turn their backs on one another and start playing hilarious pranks on each other, and the fight with the huge catfish. To top it all off, after the movie is over, it shows a lot of outtakes from the film, mainly with Grandpa Gustafson and they're just as hilarious as the movie itself was.
If you liked the first movie or if you like comedy movies where the laughs never stop, I recommend getting "Grumpier Old Men."

The more things change, the more they stay the same in Wabasha, Minnesota. The uncatchable fish named Catfish Hunter grows fatter. The wisecracks, zingers and put downs pile up like freshly raked leaves. And Grumpy Old Men become grumpier in the sequel that's "pure delight, a wonderfully warmhearted comedy" (David Sheehan, CBS-TV). Grabbing fishing rods and picking up where they left off, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau reel in another comedy winner as Grumpier Old Men. Ann-Margret, Daryl Hannah, Kevin Pollack and Burgess Meredith also return to the Land of 10,000 Lakes to reprise their roles. And Sophia Loren is the newcomer whose plan to turn the town's beloved bait shop into a ristorante sends the old boys into a tizzy. Be advised: a tizzy is very contagious. Get ready to laugh. And stay tuned for the outtakes, including "man-sized manicotti!"
