Monsters, Inc. (Mandarin Chinese Edition) Review

Monsters, Inc. (Mandarin Chinese Edition)

Pixar's 2001 hit, MONSTERS, INC., continued the studio's tradition of creating wonderfully fantastical worlds of incredible imagination in design utilizing the very best in computer animation. What is the hallmark though of a Pixar film is the fact that the development of character is always at the forefront and is never relegated to existing on a superficial level in order to showcase the many hours of hard work that went into creating the animation. MONSTERS, INC. is of course a great buddy picture, pairing two opposites together, and setting them forth on their adventure. Just as Buzz Lightyear and Woody were teamed up to create such a memorable pair in the TOY STORY movies, so too does MONSTERS, INC. couple the diminutive and always frenetic and full of energy Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), with his enormous friend Sulley (John Goodman), the leading scarer at Monsters, Inc., a company that exists to provide electricity for Monstropolis by collecting the screams of children as the monsters pop out of the kids' closet doors at night. When a toddler, Boo, inadvertently follows Sulley back through the doorway and into the monsters' own world though, Sulley and Mike must set out to try and get her back to her own world while battling those in the company that have ulterior motives. The result is a wildly funny and dynamically original movie that exudes a tremendous amount of heart from its characters.
The voice casting of Crystal and Goodman is phenomenal, and the two play off of each other so well that they create some hilarious moments on screen. Both though are allowed to fully develop their characters, and the relationship between Mike and Sulley is given the freedom to grow and change throughout the film, and this is key to the story's success. Had the enormously talented Crystal's Wazowski only been seen as the comedic sidekick of Sulley, and never given the liberty to go through his own personal character arc, a much weaker picture would have emerged. Directors Pete Docter, David Silverman and Lee Unkrich though do not go for the easy gag, but rather stay true to each of the character's own motivations, thus allowing their relationship with one another to organically grow throughout the film. By doing so, the team of Mike and Sulley become one of the most memorable from the Pixar catalogue.
Seeing the film in HD at home with the Blu-ray release of the film is in a word, breathtaking. Even though the film is now almost nine years old, the animation in MONSTERS, INC. is still beyond compare. Not only is the world of Monstropolis so completely artistically original and populated with such unique interpretations of monsters, but the level of detail in the animation is staggering. Looking at some of the skin textures of some of the monsters will quickly illustrate how much time and attention to detail went into animating the film, but by far, the scene that best exemplifies just how good the animation in MONSTERS, INC. is involves Mike and Sulley being banished to the Himalayas. Here, the thick blue and purple fur that covers Sulley's body can be seen blowing in the winter storm as small pieces of snow become stuck within it. The animation in this scene alone ranks as among the best, and serves as a milestone in computer animation excellence. Being able to see it in HD at home will bring an entirely new level of admiration for what the filmmakers were able to achieve with the movie.
For the Blu-ray release, Disney is including four discs that include the Blu-ray version of the film, a DVD version, a digital copy and a Blu-ray disc of bonus features. There is so much value with this set, that it, along with the similar edition of UP that is being released on the same day, will prove to be must have Blu-rays for everyone's collection and are rightly sure to be one of the most popular gifts given this holiday season.
The bonus material included with MONSTERS, INC. is simply amazing, and will keep a viewer engaged for hours discovering the vast amount of supplemental material on the film. The bonus features include:

The Nasty Girl (1991) Review

The Nasty Girl (1991)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
German playwright Bertolt Brecht felt that theatre should teach the audience certain moral lessons, and to this end he developed a mode of presentation frequently described as "theatre of alienation"--a type of production in which the audience is never allowed to fully indentify with the characters and their situations and is instead asked to critically observe the material and draw conclusions from it. For the most part, this is a style that works best on the stage--but director Michael Verhoeven uses it as a springboard for THE NASTY GIRL. And the result is one of the few instances in which these Brechtian concepts come successfully to the screen.
The story is wickedly funny. A bright young lass, the daughter of two teachers, wins an essay contest--and when the next contest is announced she again decides to compete, this time with an essay on "My Hometown During The Third Reich," in which she plans to show how her small Bavarian town resisted Nazism. But few, even those regarded by the townfolk as heroes of that era, are willing to discuss it--and those that do provide conflicting information. She eventually gives up the project, but it continues to fester in the back of her mind, and some years later when she resumes her research with the idea of writing a book she discovers that the anti-Nazi heroes were not, perhaps, either anti-Nazi or heroic.
The main thrust of the film centers upon Sonja's relentless battle against the powers that be to obtain access to documents from the Nazi era, and how civic leaders work to frustrate her--both by persistently dodging her demands for the material and by direct terrorism. But their resistance makes Sonja all the more determined, and she becomes willing to pay any personal price. Ultimately, she does arrive at some of the truth, only to discover that she has now been enshrined by civic leaders as a "hero" in an effort to silence her with praise.
Director Michael Verhoeven presents the story in an odd mix of documentary and theatrical and realistic styles that mesh extremely well to create that famous Brechtian effect without ever actually seeming preachy. And leading actress Lena Stolze, as "the nasty girl" who accidentally drifts into the role of advocate for the truth at any price, is equally remarkable: she gives a very likeable, bemused performance that draws the viewer in even while maintaining the necessary degree of detachment the style requires. Not all viewers will appreciate the film--some will find the subject too dark, others may not be able to buy into the style--but this is a brilliant film, and you owe it a chance. Strongly recommended.

Welcome to DongMakGol DVD (2005 Korean Movie) Review

Welcome to DongMakGol DVD (2005 Korean Movie)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is hard to tell you the exact nature of the film; it is basically a fantasy, but is also a war movie. Anyway the film is pretty impressive, though.
`Welcome to Dongmakgol' is made in South Korea, where it became a huge hit in 2005. It was selected as the nation's entry for Oscars, but in spite of the film's better-than average quality it was not nominated. If you see the film, you will know why it was ignored by the voters of the Academy. (I will come back to the supposed reasons later.) Let me first say that `Welcome to Dongmakgol' is a highly entertaining film for all its deep flaws.
The film begins with a close-up of a strange girl Yeo-il (played by Hye-jeong Kang, 'Old Boy') who is happily staring something falling from the sky. Actually she is watching a US fighter airplane which lands near the sleepy and peaceful village of Dongmakgol.
The story is in fact set in the 1950s, during the Korean War, and two groups of soldiers are seen heading for the same village Dongmakgol without knowing the presence of each other. When three soldiers of the North Korean army led by Chief Comrade Lee Su-Hwa (Jae-yeong Jeong) arrive at Dongmakgol after a bloody battle, they are surprised to find that there are not only two South Korean soldiers, 2nd Lt. Pyo (Ha-kyun Shin) and Army Medic Mun Sang-sang (Jae-kyeong Seo) but also an American pilot Smith (called Su-Misu, played by Steve Taschler).
Well I think you already know the rest of the story, which is pretty predictable. The soldiers of both sides confront one another at first, but the kind villagers and the life in the peaceful village gradually change their minds.
Something happens in the middle of the film, which I won't disclose here. All I can say is that some characters of the film, especially the Westerns (or Americans to be precise), are depicted in a very negative light. True, the filmmakers did not forget to refer to the painful facts as to who started the war, or who killed the (South/North) Koreans, and they present this Smith as a very nice guy. However, it is also true that some Western soldiers are violent, trigger-happy (and bomb-happy too), extremely negative stereotypes, and their nagative traits are shown on the screen with truly stereotypical villain's acting.
Though some scenes reflect the today's political climate in this country, the film has lots of wonderful fantasy-like moments that would be universally appealing, accompanied by the beautifull music of Jo Hisaishi (known for his works in the films of Miyazaki and Kitano), and the friendship between the characters are really moving. The ending has a surreal beauty, which is surely touching, but like many other films from South Korea, the film is sometimes very nationalistic, alienating some of us from the content of the film. `Welcome to Dongmakgol' is worth a look for the good acting from the Korean stars, and its unique visuals (see the funny slow-motion hunting sequence), but could be better with well-balanced descriptions of some characters.

I honestly have no idea just what else is on this tape but to be truthful, it's worth the price for "Bambi Meets Godzilla" alone, since this gem is perhaps the funniest one-minute, one-joke cartoon ever made. It's quite simply a classic. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Newland for "producing" their son Marv!

Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures (2008) Review

Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mel Brooks Spaceballs is in the top 5, if not my favorite movie of all time. So it would only be natural that I would want to get this DVD of the new toon series. Judging from reading about the show being canceled, and a few reviewers saying how bad it was when they saw it on T.V (Which i never got to do) I really was not expecting much at all when I surprisingly got confirmation that this DVD had been shipped (they had canceled it previously, but it's back again now)
It's a shame there is only 4 episodes. The 4 episodes are not exactly faithful to what you know about Spaceballs, but that does not mean they should be dismissed, as I laughed all the way through each episode. There is a couple of times you get a little disorientated wondering why Lonestar and Princess Vespa are not married, or why Sanders and Helmet would call for Lonestars help... but aside from that, Mel could have had a successful series here, had it been given a chance to get some of the kinks out like most first series do... but oh well, what can you do about it now?
Mel returns as the voice of President Skroob and Yogurt, as with Daphene Whats-her-name as Vespa & Joan Rivers as Dot Matrix.... the rest of the characters voices you can get used to, except for Cornell Sanders voice, that one really needed to be re-cast.
Surprisingly the humor was not censured out. I was expected a completely G rated cartoon here, but it's more a PG rated one that pushes the boundary of it. I was surprised at the sexual innuendos and language portrayed, which just made me like it. Had they gone a little bit more raunchier and smuttier, it could have contended with South Park and such shows.
As long as you go in not expecting a masterpeice, then you should enjoy what this show has to offer. Just sit back and remember, it's just for laughs.
Shame there is no bonus features at all :(

Charlie Chaplin: Great Dictator (1940) Review

Charlie Chaplin: Great Dictator (1940)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the greatest satires ever filmed and Chaplin's most fully realized comedy. A beautiful blend of the usual Chaplin slapstick and pathos along with a very effective social and political commentary. Charlie is Adenoid Hynckle, dictator of an only slightly fictional country of Tomania. He also plays a Jewish ghetto barber. Both are played with such impeccable accuracy that to distinguish between them is extremely easy.Names are changed but this film is still the most effective film of Nazi Germany and Hitler's thankfully aborted attempt to take over the world. Chaplin's script never gets too preachy at least without an equal dose of satire. His approach is to make people laugh while teaching them at the same time. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his final monologue. After a predictable mistaken identity episode, Chaplin as the unnamed Jewish barber speaks of the horrors of Nazism. This climazes what may be the greatest performance in the history of comedy films. The greatest because it does more than simply make us laugh-it makes us think. The film earned Chaplin well deserved Oscar nominations for BestPicture, Screenplay and Actor. This is a film you must see.

Stripes (1981) Review

Stripes (1981)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nope! It's NOT just the same movie - simply put:
You haven't actually seen Bill Murray's 'STRIPES' until you obtain this 2005 re-release DVD!
The bonus scenes featured DOES INDEED answer various inquiries we once had re this comedy:
e.g. - why are those 2 guys ALONE sitting against the EM-50 in Italy before they take it for a spin?....and when in Germany Russell flat-out refuses to rescue the captured troops with the other three in the EM-50, what made him change his mind? - (to mention a few)..
Another one of the deleted scenes is the (talked-about) 7-minute "South America" segment
where we DO see another side of Harold Ramis - while Murray is truly hilarious!
A BETTER print with superior STEREO 5.1 dolby sound now vs the previous mono DVD, including a great feature in two parts -"Stars & Stripes" - that will leave you dazzled in understanding this entire film: how it was made, rare image stills, and how the actors (a good number of them)
felt in doing the film along with Murray himself, being interviewed from of all places - TOKYO!
This new DVD gives you 2 movie options:
1.) the EXTENDED version featuring the deleted scenes-
(with added option of audio commentary from the director and head writer)
2.) the ORIGINAL theatrical version-
*BOTH WS*
There's also the option of seeing all SIX bonus scenes - one after the other -
The EXTENDED version does a fine editing job inserting the deleted scenes at the right places,
- even indicating (via small permanent text) where these bonus scenes START and END -
-an extremely smooth flow minus any pauses or audio dropouts...
However on this strange ORIGINAL version, there ARE crude pauses/slight audio drops only at the marks where the deleted scenes were MEANT to be placed (or were previously removed),
it's as if they didn't (wouldn't or couldn't) simply EMPLOY the main original print for this DVD -
-unsmooth/choppy at these marks, esp when the guys drive to Germany and meet the girls -
e.g. - Murray hugs P.J. Soles with the line: "I Brought The Magic Suitcase"..
- That very scene literally disappears - thus disappoints on this ORG version -
One Major Blunder:
A bonus scene w/P.J. Soles (there's MORE of her) & Murray in a hotel bedroom from Germany
is in fact the EXACT same bedroom set in a PREVIOUS short scene where she pulls Bill out of the trunk at General Barnacy's house; When you compare the two you'll believe they intended this to be START of the 'Barnacy Bedroom' segment..
But overall (the pauses & blunder notwithstanding), they did a great job
in christening this DVD as: "The ULTIMATE Stripes"
- definately worth forking over (at best) a Hamilton and an Abe for...

Tenchi Muyo - OVA DVD Boxed Set

It is impossible to put fully into words what Pioneer has done with this unbelievable (and totally complete) box set. Basically, they have taken an all-time favorite anime .. given it a digital remastering, along with Dolby 5.1 Japanese tracks (subtitled wonderfully I might add), along with a great job on the English dubbing, all 13 OVA Episodes, an interactive encyclopedia for Tenchi Fanatics and an unbeatable price. The animation is beautiful in the DVD format and extremely clear, which brings vibrant new life into this anime classic. Pretty much I would recommend this to any anime fan who hasn't seen the series yet (you really have no idea what you're missing out on!) or any Tenchi fan who would like to see this series in its ideal format. If you are new to the anime DVD scene like I am, make sure you put this set on your list of "to buy" collections ^_^ You won't be disapointed!

The Shadow Riders (1982) Review

The Shadow Riders (1982)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Shadow Riders" has all the grit, matter-of-fact speech, incredible landscapes and action of a great Louis L'Amour book. Tom Selleck, Sam Elliot and Jeff Osterhage also starred in "The Sacketts" in 1979, and do just as fine a job in this movie as that one.
The part that will surprise you is how strong the female lead role is. Katharine Ross does an excellent job as the fiesty Kate Connery, the love interest of Dal Travern (Sam Elliot). She had as good a character and as much screen time as many of today's heriones -- a highly unusual circumstance in the early 80s and certainly unusual for the genre.
"The Shadow Riders" has a great mix of romance, action, humor and good old fashioned Western elements. This mix makes the film appealing to a much wider audience than just Western fans or Louis L'Amour fans -- although they will come away thrilled.

When the Western slipped into theatrical oblivion in the late 1970s, many of the best examples of the genre began appearing as made-for-television films. After the success of "The Sacketts", from the Louis L'Amour novel, producers quickly reunited stars Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott in another fine adaptation of a L'Amour book, "The ShadowRiders". As brothers Mac and Dal Traven, sporting blue and gray uniforms, respectively, they wind their way home at the close of the Civil War to discover a band of confederate rebels have ravaged their town and kidnapped their sisters and brother and Dal's feisty sweetheart (Katharine Ross). With the help of their outlaw uncle (Western stalwart Ben Johnson), whom they must break out of prison, they track the guerrillas to the Gulf Coast and down into Mexico for a final, fatal showdown. Veteran director Andrew McLaglen sets this TV movie on a loping pace and a jovial tone, defined largely by Selleck's easygoing performance and the jocular comic relief of rascally Johnson. Elliott provides the intensity, at times positively ferocious under his heavy brows and burning, sunken eyes. The mood is occasionally too comic, but McLaglen delivers the goods in a series of gritty action sequences, proving that old Western directors don't die, they just drift on over to the small screen. Western icons R.G. Armstrong and Harry Carey Jr. and 1950s leading lady Jane Greer also appear in key roles. "--Sean Axmaker"

See Spot Run (2001) Review

See Spot Run (2001)

Is SEE SPOT RUN a great movie? NOT REALLY. Is it entertaining? Yes, I must admit it made me laugh quite a bit. It's really a slapstick farce with a blonde David Arquette mugging it up like the world was coming to an end. He plays a dog-fearing mailman who has his own devices to elude the dogs on Bleeker Street, "Canine Alley." Agent 11, a canine FBI agent, is targeted by mob boss Paul Sorvino (humorously so), so he is sent to witness protection for canines in Alaska, or he's supposed to be. A crooked agent sets 11 up, and the mob's hit men (especially funny is the late Joe Viterelli who plays mobsters with unabashed fun) go after the dog to kill him. 11 manages to escape to where else? Arquette's mail truck, where he is instantly adored by cute little Angus T. Jones, the son of the hottie (Leslie Bibb) Arquette is mooning over.
Michael Clarke Duncan has nice moments as 11's "partner" who can't seem to function without the pooch in his life. There are lots of predictable gags and even though the showdown in the pet store is incredibly goofy, it is funny. So if it makes you laugh, it succeeds as entertainment if not a great film!

I love the film so it was a no-brainer to get it for the store, and my slight disappointment is offset with showing what a high storage capacity can do for this product.
The package comes with both the BD and the standard def discs and included are all of the special features we know from the 2005 release. So what's changed? Nothing except for the languages: Dubbed in DTS for six languages (including Castilian, German, Italian and French) and Mono or Dolby for three others, and subtitled in nine languages (incl. Danish, Swedish and Norwegian). None of the supplements have been upgraded but that DTS always sounds awesome during the main feature. The picture has not been cleaned up from the transfer so there is plenty of artifact, hair and random film discolorations. I enjoyed watching some of the same special features again, including the John Candy memorial and the Mel Brooks conversation. The ludiricous speed is just as lame as before.
The menu is a killer if your player is not tuned up (or older). It becomes painful when trying to watch those flubs sequences as there is no play all option. It is Spaceballs, it is Mel Brooks - so it makes it a worthwhile purchase if you did not already upgrade a few years ago to that special edition DVD (especially with both included here). I would normally rate this lower but there is so much here I had to go up one.

I think most people who buy/rent this DVD have already seen the movie and know what they're getting. There are a lot of good reviews on this movie here at amazon.com but I only saw one that mentioned the quality of the DVD. It is absolutely horrible. The companies who produce these dark, grainy DVDs need to know that the consumers aren't going to accept this type of low-quality transfer. I'd gladly pay a bit more money for a DVD that's viewable. We know how good movies can look on DVD. So why release a disc that looks as poor as this one? As consumers we need to demand better! Just as VHS movies recorded in SLP or EP were unacceptable, so are DVDs that look as bad as this Risky Business disc.

The Dukes of Hazzard was not that bad of a movie,it just wasnt as good as it could have been, this unrated version has T&A inserted, but thats pretty much it,i did like extras, actually better than the film itself!,And it has a darn great cast,Johnny Knoxville,Seann William Scott,Jessica Simpson,Willie Nelson,Joe Don Baker,Lynda Carter,MC Gainey and Burt Reynolds. The movie was played way to seriously(its supposed to be a comedy) I mean Roscoe and Boss Hogg were just downright nasty in this film, unlike the TV show where it was just good ol' fun,as for Starsky and Hutch,I loved it from stem to stern, more recommended than the Dukes! I still give it five stars because you get 2 movies on one DVD,a pretty good deal for the $,and there BOTH WIDESCREEN,A MAJOR +

Night at the Museum (2-Disc Special Edition) (2006) Review

I thought this movie would mostly be for kids, but I think I laughed as much if not more than the younger folks around me. The CGI is good, the plot is neat, and Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Robin Williams deliver the goods. It was also a treat to see Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney in action again. Not to mention that Carla Gugino is a feast for the eyes. It's nice to watch a good film for the whole family once every so often. It makes you feel like a kid again, without a care in the world.

Ben Stiller leads an all-star cast including Robin Williams and Dick Van Dyke in this hilarious blockbuster hit. When good-hearted dreamer Larry Daley (Stiller) is hired as night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, he soon discovers that an ancient curse brings all the exhibits to life after the sun sets. Suddenly, Larry finds himself face-to-face with a frisky T. rex skeleton, tiny armies of Romans and cowboys and a mischievous monkey who taunts him to the breaking point. But with the help of President Teddy Roosevelt (Williams), Larry may just figure out a way to control the chaos and become a hero in his son's eyes. Boasting jaw-dropping special effects and laugh-out-loud moments, Night at the Museum is your ticket to nonstop fun!

Forever Young (Snap Case) (1992) Review

Forever Young (Snap Case) (1992)

One has to give superstar Mel Gibson a lot of credit. Over his prolific career, Gibson has taken many risks in the roles he's chosen, and this romantic fantasy is just one of them. FOREVER YOUNG opens in 1939, where daredevil test pilot Gibson finds himself involved with a scientist who is perfecting a cryogenics chamber. He's also madly in love with the lovely Helen (Isabel Glasser), and wants to marry her. Alas and alack, before he can pop the question, Helen is struck down by a truck and goes into a coma. As the months go by, Gibson clings to hopes she'll recover but as his scientist friend (George Wendt) states, doctors give her little hope. When Mel feels he can't watch Helen die, he volunteers to be the first human volunteer for the cryogenics project, asking Wendt to freeze him for a year so he can avoid the inevitable. Next thing you know, it's 1992, and we meet single mom Jamie Lee Curtis (quite good as always) and her 10 year old son (Elijah Wood, simply charming, showing us what his future would be years later). While playing in an abandoned military warehouse, Wood and his buddy stumble upon the cyrogenics chamber and accidentally release Gibson. How he got caught in this chamber for 53 years forms the core of the story and Gibson desperately searches for some knowledge of Wendt's whereabouts.
The movie is unabashedly romantic but Gibson is so good and the story takes hold of you and you watch with amusement as Gibson discovers the technologies of a new world and his scenes with young Wood are marvelous. A rather contrived ending spoils the overall effect but FOREVER YOUNG is nonetheless a very engaging film.
