(More customer reviews)I thought this movie would mostly be for kids, but I think I laughed as much if not more than the younger folks around me. The CGI is good, the plot is neat, and Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Robin Williams deliver the goods. It was also a treat to see Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney in action again. Not to mention that Carla Gugino is a feast for the eyes. It's nice to watch a good film for the whole family once every so often. It makes you feel like a kid again, without a care in the world.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great DVD with many excellent bonus features, including the Director's commentary that adds so much to the understanding of how the film was made. The film was shot primarily with wide angle lenses which heightens the effect of some very frightening screens. For example is there anything more incredible than the scene where the captured, brainwashed prisoners believe they are attending a ladies' garden party, while actually on stage as human guinea pigs in a meeting of communist cadres. Just an amazing juxtaposition of images! The storyline is well developed and never loses the taut feeling of suspense from start to finish. Laurence Harvey, Frank Sinatra, and Angela Lansbury are particularly fine in their roles. If there is only one criticism, it is that Harvey lapses at times into his original British accent, which is disconcerting. But given the power of his performance in this role, this is a minor detail that can easily be overlooked. The film is shot in black and white, which is far better suited to its cold war images. Just puzzled why MGM issued the cover for this DVD in color? Anyway, highly recommend this DVD!

All I have to say is that this movie looks and sound awesome on blu-ray. If you want good demo material get this movie, you will not be disappointed.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire Review

(More customer reviews)Shadows of the Empire is a very fun, engaging game, but it does have its share of problems. It has amazingly high-res graphics for when it came out, with pretty good but not great animations. Basically following the life of Dash Rendar during the whole Shadows of the Empire story, this game fills in the plot in the same way the Phantom Menace game was meant to with that movie.
On easy mode, this game is unbelievably simple, but on any of the other three difficulty levels it is near impossible after the first 4 levels. However, it is neat that there are so many different game engines. There is the 1st/3rd person engine which graphics put Jedi Knight to shame, and you can switch to 3 or 5 different camera angles to help with those difficult jumps and leaps. There is in the gunwell mode where the ship is on autopilot and you just aim and shoot (a la rebel assault), there is flight-sim mode where you control the ship, and there is a swoop racing level. All of these are well implemented and it provides an amazing level of variety to the gameplay.
Also, the graphics are simply superb in all details, and the levels are broken up into segments so they don't seem to stretch on forever. And one of the biggest plusses is that we get to hear what all of those SOTE character' voices sound like.
I'm surprised that this game wasn't more popular, as it is a much better game than the similar The Phantom Menace, and its replayability level is pretty high. I'd recommend getting this one.

Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds Saga Review

(More customer reviews)Real Time Strategy (RTS) games had never really gotten my attention until the release of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. I had played Command and Conquer until it bored me into a coma, played StarCraft until I couldn't care if my units lived or died (which took about three hours), and played Star Trek: Armada until completion just to find out what happened next in the backstory (not being overly challenged by the combat scenarios). All in all, I had chalked up RTS games to being for a niche market that I, apparently, didn't belong to.
Then Galactic Battlegrounds came out and changed all of that. It is not terribly different from any of the above games or their bretheren (it reminds me particularly of Age of Empires - which it bases its game engine on - and WarCraft/StarCraft). There is an interesting addition in the form of air attack units, but I can't say that this is what brings be back to this game time and again.
I guess the addiction comes from pure fanboy glee. Let me put aside all rational gaming considerations like graphics (very good, but not fantastic), learning curve (very easy with a good tutorial, no manual reading required), and game play (well paced fun, never boring). Let's down to the meat of the act. Pure geekish fun.
Oh, sure, it is okay to control a bunch of annonymous soldiers and fight off invading forces like in StarCraft. But squishing a Jar-Jar Binks look-alike under the heel of your AT-AT Imperial Walker - now THAT is worth the price of admission!
Getting good takes practice like any other game. The difficulty is easily adjustable, and the replayability is infinate. Add in the fact that this bundle comes with the Clone Campaigns - adding two more types of forces to play from Episode 2 - and this will be the best money you have dropped on a video game in a long while.
