The Dig (Windows XP) Review

The Dig (Windows XP)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
THE DIG is a refreshing title that every PC user should seek out. Of all the point-and-click adventure games I've played, this one is probably the best.
The gameplay isn't drastically different from other LucasArts titles, but it's more refined. One thing that irks about some other (admittedly excellent) games like SAM & MAX, MANIAC MANSION, and INDIANA JONES is how cumbersome some of the controls could be. What's the difference between "using" an item and "grabbing" an item? Why do I have to "walk" somewhere when I could just click on where I want my character to go?
THE DIG eliminates these simple inconveniences. Even though I got used to some of the little quirks that plagued those other great LucasArts titles, THE DIG didn't require any getting used to. It plays great from the getgo, and stays easy to play for the duration of the game.
Sure, there are a couple "stupid puzzles", but THE DIG is the first point-and-click game that I didn't have to cheat on. I was able to use my character's observations and descriptions to solve the puzzles. And for the most part, the puzzles stay in context of the story.
And what a story it is...
After a remote radar station picks up an asteroid on a course-collision with Earth, five astronauts are sent into space. Led by Cmdr. Boston Low (voiced by the always-reliable Robert Patrick), the team prepares to place explosives onto the asteroid, thus saving the planet. Yes...this sounds a lot like the movie ARMAGEDDON, but the difference is that Michael Bay's movie was silly, and THE DIG only uses the asteroid as the tip of a wondrous iceberg of discovery.
Very early into our story, Cmdr. Low (along with reporter Maggie and archaeologist Brink) explore the insides of the asteroid, and are soon thrust to an unknown world. Is it another dimension? Is it Earth? Very early into the exploration, you'll soon get an idea of where Low, Maggie, and Brink are sent. But until you see it for yourself, I'll let you ponder just like THE DIG wants you to.
Our three heroes not only have to figure out how to get home, but what exactly transpired on the planet. To make matters worse, they encounter alien entities that may not want them to leave. THE DIG's plot sensibly allows you (as Cmdr. Low) to explore different areas, while Maggie and Brink deal with their discoveries. You're isolated when you need to be, and the game reunites the characters for a good reason. You truly feel like you're not just at the mercy of a videogame plot. Brink, Maggie, and Low all have their own motivations, and thansk to good writing and good voice-casting, you believe them.
THE DIG has a marvelous story, which is what makes it my favorite game. Sure, it lacks some of the offbeat humor that LucasArts is known for. But quite frankly, THE DIG needed to be serious. It's more in the spirit of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY rather than George Lucas' STAR WARS saga.
The story only starts running into a few small problems in its final stretch. Like other great story-driven titles like METAL GEAR SOLID 2 or INDIGO PROPHECY, I think most will be satisfied, but a tad underwhelemed. In fact, THE DIG is a lot like INDIGO PROPHECY --- you sense that the developers either ran out of time, or the writers didn't finish writing. THE DIG, quite frankly, needed a couple more scenes for proper closure.
I've typed so much about the story because point-and-click games count on them more than anything else. Once you solve a puzzle, there's no challenge. Characters, worlds, story, and spirit are what keep us coming back to these games. THE DIG is my favorite of this genre for this very reason: LucasArts was smart enough to know that its gameplay could only work the first time around.
Special mention must go to Michael Land, for his brilliant music score. His compositions will help inspire you to keep cracking away at THE DIG's mysteries, from his minimal tones in space to his haunting frantic organ in the presence of the supernatural. I guess the best compliment I can offer is that some of Land's music sounds similar to James Horner's awesome STAR TREK II score.
THE DIG is a wonderful game, and among the best of its genre. The characters are well-defined, the story is well-paced, the themes are worth exploring, the puzzles are solvable and rarely "cheap", the music is fantastic, the controls are easy to grasp, and best of all...THE DIG is the rare point-and-click title that is worth revisiting after finishing it. It's a more serious game than LucasArts' other adventure games of this kind, but that only makes it more unique.
THE DIG is a very special piece of entertainment. Buy It!
***FOOTNOTE FOR VISTA USERS***
Aside from the expected limiations for point-and-click games and rushed finale, the only other problem I had was that my DVD-ROM copy of THE DIG would occasionally stop working on my Vista computer. It was almost like I had a certain time limit or "double-click" limit before the program would stop. I encourage saving regularly because older titles like THE DIG don't always work 100% on Vista PCs. Please ask Amazon sellers questions so that you have an idea if your computer is compatible.
Otherwise, this game is currently available on Steam for 5 bucks. Please, get a free Steam account, and dish up the cash. You won't regret it.

The Dig tells the story of a hand-picked team who are set to an asteroid, which is headed for Earth. From the beginning, the intelligence of the writers is displayed by the use of nuclear charges to push the asteroid from its path. The team quickly discovers that this asteroid is more then they believed as they gradually uncover the compnents that lead to its activation. The team finds themself thrown through space aboard the Crystal Starship hidden within the asteroid, only to peacefully land on the surface of an alien world. They are then left with no option but to use what little they have to attempt to unravel the mysteries of this desolate set of islands and find a way home.

I don't remember this game when it first came out, but I just recently got it, and it still packs a punch. With a truly gripping plotline that follows from just after the events of The Empire Strikes Back to the end of Return of the Jedi (And yes, you even get to play a scene from Shadows of the Empire), X-Wing Alliance (XWA) is a great game. While the graphics aren't exactly stunning to today's audience, in my opinon, the gameplay more than makes up for it. I came to XWA from Rogue Squadron, really wishing I could take my X-Wing up against a Star Destroyer. Well, I got my wish, and let me tell you, be careful what you wish for: those suckers are hard! And while Rogue Squadron (RS) has beautiful graphics, you never go into space. In XWA, every mission is in space. Also, the controls are more realistic. RS's big kick was the graphics, so the designer's didn't worry about really complex and realistic controls. In XWA, you don't just fly around and fire at stuff, you can control how your shields recharge, how your guns fire, strengthen your shields in one area of the ship, or reroute everything to the engines and fly like crazy.
Another bonus for those of you who liked RS but wanted something more is hyperspace. To get to the areas where your missions take place requires you to jump into hyperspace, which, like in the films, doesn't always work. (Especially when there's an Interdictor Crusier around; you'll learn to hate those.)
So, in conclusion, XWA is a great game if you have a lot of time, there are over 50 missions, not counting the single-player skirmishes you can create in the simulator room (A simulator in a simulator, eh?), and multiplayer options abound.
Have fun. Now get to your fighters!

Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rebel Assault 2, the sequel to the extreamly popular origianal is here, so how does it fair up? Overall it fares up really well, but its ultimatly too short. Rebel Assault 2's plot is really interesting, with Rookie one trying to stop the Evil Empire from unleashing a wave of phantom ships that can attack and destroy at will without being spotted. This is of course very bad and throughout your travels to stop this menace, you will fly through asteroid fields, zoom on a speeder bike through a forest, go on a really big star destroyer and infiltrate a secret base. The graphics are very good, although they are a little rough here and there. The full motion sequences are extreamly good, with fine voice acting. The music is also very good. My favorite part is all the hidden easter eggs hidden in the game, which include a willie coyote spoof, dancing stormtroopers and a hillarious Mystery science theater 3000 mode. However this game is too short, on easy mode, if you skip all the movies, you can beat it in less then 10 minutes. But its still a good game.
The good: Great plot, music, varitey, and graphics, hilarious easter eggs
The bad: Too short, gets really hard on difficulty levels, graphics can be choopy
And the ugly: Bad ending

If you thought X-Wing vs. TIE was good, you'll love this. You play the role of the son of a family caught up in the Rebellion. You start by flying missions for your family business. Eventually you can join the Rebellion and fly X-wings, A-wings, B-wings, and you even get the chance to fly the Millennium Falcon! The range of missions is great, and you can practise your skills in the simulator, or the pilot proving grounds. My only criticism is that some of the early missions are very tricky, and the difficulty does not always seem to increase in logical order.

Star Wars: X-Wing VS TIE Fighter with Balance of Power Review

Star Wars: X-Wing VS TIE Fighter with Balance of Power
Average Reviews:

I don't know what all the criticism is about. Personally I think this is a great game from Lucasarts. The various melees are innovative and challenging, especially at hardest skill level, and anyone who says ISDs are puny should try playing it on a more adult skill level. Also, VSDs, although lesser armored, are pretty powerful. I think all the capital ships balance out nicely. The one thing I can complain about is the lack of TIE Defender in the game or add-on. Speaking of which, I think that the add-on pack really provides an immersing challenge. The missions are difficult yet fun, and make you feel like you are really fighting for your life and beliefs. Also, the SSD is huge! It's my favourite ship, and looks so menacing. In short, I just cannot see what everyone finds so wrong. Another great Lucasarts game, and roll on more.

Star Wars: Force Commander (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars: Force Commander (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of all the early Star Wars games sporting improved graphics (compared to polygonal gems such as X-Wing Alliance) Force Commander ranks among the most fun to play. Like its modern twin (Galactic Battlegrounds) Force Commander requires the player to think strategically and be able to keep track of many battlefield units during multiple real-time conflicts over variable terrain. This game is for the more intellectual Star Wars fan so it isn't full of flashy lightsaber fights, alien shoot-outs, or fast-paced fly-bys in Incom T-65 X-wings; you'll actually have to use your noodle to enjoy it! And for these reasons the game often gets poor reviews, with "unengaging gameplay," "dated graphics," and "poor AI" among the common remarks. But nothing could be further from the truth. If you go into the game knowing what it is, you'll find Force Commander enjoyable and engaging with a high replay.
In short, Force Commander is Lucasarts' version of extreme battle-chess: it is an interactive 3rd person set of real-time 3D strategic missions that span the original Star Wars Trilogy. You can play in either Campaign mode, Skirmish mode, or Scenario mode and depending on the mode (and your progress), you play either as an Imperial or Rebel commanding officer Brenn Tantor, a hero with a dark past. Using a unique tactical screen that Lucasarts calls the 'Battlefield Holographic Control Interface' (BHCI), you control up to 60 seperate battle units, including Imperial ATSTs, ATATs, Mobile Artillery Units, and TIE Bombers, as well as Rebel Hover Tanks, Mobile Proton Torpedo Launchers that lay mines, Mobile Missle Launchers, and Rebel Troops with grenades. There are tons of other units available. You requisition additional units with your command tenure using a system of "command points" which work as currency. You earn tenure/points by controlling the battlefield, destroying or capturing enemy units, keeping your units alive, and preventing the capture/overrun of your planetary base. The max command point total is 5000.
On worlds including Tatooine, Serapin, Abridon, Endor, and Coruscant, you control your central base, ground, and air forces via the BHCI from your Star Destroyer or Rebel Command ship, orbiting the planet. Half-way through the campaign, or at any time in a skirmish, you have the option to leave your command ship and go to the planets' surfaces in a Tracked Mobile Base (TRMB). What you see on the screen for most of the game is intended to be a "holographic 3D representation of the battlefield" and not the actual battlefield, thus the battlefield units are *supposed* to look like 3D models.
Frequent cutscenes with a few dramatic twists provide excellent backstory and keep the player engaged throughout the campaign mode. You start the campaign as Lt. Brenn Tantor of the Empire, commanding a team of sand-troopers on a search for an all-to-familiar escape pod on Tatooine and (without spoiling the details) end up with the Rebellion by the end of the Campaign, storming the Imperial Palaces of Coruscant following the destruction of the Death Star II which you directly have a hand in. The Scenario Mode gives you a chance to go back and replay cutscenes or missions that you've already completed in the campaign.
In Skirmish Mode, you choose from a wide variety of worlds and environmental conditions in which to battle, you choose your side, and you start out with at most 2000 command points. The skirmish is over when you succesfully control the enemy's base and command bunkers and then mop up all additional enemy units on the battlefield. A skirmish is basically an annihilation exercise.
In all modes, the game is designed to limit available units & command points to force you to use strategy to win and not brute force. Each world/terrain presents specific tactical advantages & disadvantages which you must balance in your strategy, and each side (Empire/Alliance) has advantages over the other for different battlefield units. For example, Imperial units are inexpensive but have no shields, so most opening Imperial moves must be won by numbers. On the other hand, while Rebel units are a bit more expensive, they have shields which regenerate and so they last longer in head-to-head combat. Prior to each mission in the campaign, you load your battle units in the command ship's landing bay where you have the option to store and save critical units for later missions.
There are some disadvantages to this game: the AI has only one setting, making the harder campaign missions almost impossible to win on the first try. The BHCI, which you can toggle on/off, takes up a full 1/3 of the screen. If you fully use the tactical advantages of the BHCI this is not a problem, but if you rely solely on the view of the battlefield then you'll choke in a fight. Also, manipulating the camera takes some practice but if you combine camera manipulation with the weapon-grouping feature (shift + 1-9), you will actually have a tactical advantage over the AI. In addition, there are several shortcut keys which make quick work of frequently used features.
Going into any Force Commander battle requires strategy and if you combine the features of the BHCI with the tactical advantages of the particular battlefield terrain, this game is lots of fun. P.S. In a skirmish, the Empire always uses the same set of battle units for its opening move. Good luck and enjoy!

This has to be my favorite shooting game on my PC. There are so many different scenes and the aliens around each corner always scared the hell out of me when I was little. It's kind of old but it still works on my XP even though it says 95. I'm not a Star Wars fan, but I'm a fan of this game.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Given the popularity of "Star Wars" and scenarios read-made for video gaming, it's quite hard to create a "Star Wars" game that just leaves one flat. Alas, the makers of "Rebel Assault 2" have managed to achieve that dubious goal. This game can easily be played and then discarded without ever really having a desire to play it again. The missions that are presented are quite pedestrian in nature and do not tend to spark the imagination of the player. Yet, there are a couple of missions that are just unbelievably hard to beat and do not give the player any degrees of satisfaction when they are beaten. It is the lackluster gameplay and poor control that make those levels so tough, not any sort of in-board challenge.
The Playstation version of this game is doubly irritating. It requires two CDs to play the entire game. Yet, it would seem that the quality of the game and the number of levels really only requires one CD. Furthermore, there are no extras of any kind that would justify this game being spread across two CDs.
All in all, playing this game was a very disappointing experience. It is not recommended for anyone who really wants to immerse themselves in the "Star Wars" universe. Try the "Rogue Squadron" series on Nintendo for that.

Raiders of the Lost Ark was one of the first movies I remember seeing as a child and it is one of my favorite movies of all time. That being said I was looking forward to a trip down memory lane with this game and I was not disappointed.
First of all let me say that this game is truly fun for all ages. While it may appear to be a kids game at first glance, it's actually a very fun game for grown ups as well. The game has the original Indiana Jones music as heard in the movies. A brilliant touch as it adds to the game tremendously. The lego versions of all Indy characters are well done and very cute. You will find virtually every character from all three Indy movies in this game and you can unlock them all as playable in "free play" mode.
Another area where this game stands out is the humor the designers have put into it. There are so many funny little moments and even some funny homages to Star Wars. The game designers have really done their homework and it shows.
As far as the gameplay...it's what you would expect from a Lego title. Lots of cracking the whip and punching things. While it can get a bit repetitive at times I completely understand why the developers did this. By keeping it simple the game really becomes accessible to gamers of all skill levels....and, in my opinion, that's a smart move on their part.
One of the best things about this game is the co-op mode. My wife never plays games with me on my PS3, ever. We recently saw the new Indy flick at the theater and I convinced her to play this game with me. She loves it! One of the reasons she never plays is because of all the "complicated" controls on the PS3's controller. Back to my point about the game play being simple, the controls are so easy she has no problem playing. There aren't complicated button schemes or an overabundance of complication so she feels comfortable playing and she does not get frustrated. This is one of those games that can be played and enjoyed by the whole family...and it's nice that it's $10 cheaper than most of the other PS3 games.
I gave this game 5 stars. Let me clarify this ranking.
Does this game have graphics as good as Uncharted:Drake's Fortune? No. Does this game have as engrossing a storyline and as diverse gameplay as GTA IV? No.
Does this game accomplish what it sets out to do? Definitely.
I've spent money on many PS3 titles that I did not enjoy nearly as much as this game. Lego Indy sets out to be a cute, nostalgic and simple game based on the Indiana Jones movies that the whole family can enjoy. I believe it has accomplished this in spades. Of course it will not appeal to everyone as hard core gamers are not the target audience but fans of Indy, families and those looking for a fun game will find that Lego Indy is a great time and I highly recommend it.

Star Wars: TIE Fighter Collector's Edition with Behind the Magic Module

The credentials of this game are impressive. Among other awards, the was noted as Best Action Game of 1994 by PC Gamer, Best Game of 1994 by Strategy Plus, and Best Simulation Game 1994 by InterActive Gaming... and that was for the ORIGINAL game. This collector's edition makes the unique Imperial experience infinitely more rich by not only adding a number of new campaigns, but by adding significantly improved graphics and sound.
What makes this game so great? I can't do it justice in this short description, but everything that has ever truly made for good gameplay can be found here. The challenge is virtually perfect; if you play part of a level and fail, and you just KNOW that you can go back and do it if you try hard enough. This makes it all the more rewarding when you finally do conquer that challenge. The replay value is excellent... I've played the game through over and over again; it's like rereading a good book. And it does an incredible job of creating an unprecedented experience... you are a pilot in the Galactic Empire. Though usually portrayed as the Bad Guys, you'll see that the Empire is really about bringing peace and order to the galaxy... about crushing the anarchist Rebellion... and if you have to destroy a few planets to do that, so be it! The subplot of intrigue and betrayal make the game more compelling.
Again, I haven't done the game justice... you have to play it to believe it. If you don't have a really high-end computer but want a good game, this is the one for you. And if you're looking for a classic game with great shelf life, it's perfect for that purpose, too.
It's just a really great game.

Star Wars: Force Commander Review

Star Wars: Force Commander
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The downside as mentioned in the previous view is what makes this RTS different from the rest. This game uses a system of "Command Points" instead of the usual resource gathering of every other RTS game out there.
The Command Point (CP) system works like prestige points. Destroy enemy units, gain CPs. Occupy enemy structures, gain CPs. Achieve mission goals, gain CPs. This was done in order to force the player to use combined arms instead of the cliched "Tank Rush" tactic used in alot of RTS's like Command & Conquer and clones.
The units in Force Commander work like a "Rock, Paper, Scissors" way. You would NOT want to storm your opponent with 50 AT-ATs because they suck against infantry, namely the Rebel Infiltrators which can take-over an enemy vehicle just like Chewbacca took over the AT-ST in "Jedi". So of course, to counter Rebel infantry, you want to use fast moving AT-PTs.
You lose CPs for not using what you've got, so basically it's like if you just sit around and not do anything, you would lose prestige points with your superiors. Achieve your goals and thus gain CPs.
GAME MECHANICS -Screen resolutions up to 1024 x 768 x 32 -3D Accelerated -3D floating camera--zoom out to a bird's-eye-view, or get right down on the ground with your troops. -Classic John Williams soundtrack REMIXED with modern music, ie Heavy Rock.

My shelf is full of games I've played all the way through one time, a few I never finished, and a few I've played through a couple of times, but I've played Dark Forces many times. It was the first first-person shooter I ever played, but it's more than nostalgia that keeps me coming back. While the graphics are dated, this game is still compelling for a number of reasons: you have *real* short- and long-term missions -- not just killing, but figuring out puzzles, achieving goals, getting artifacts, etc; the weapons and gadgets are fun; the surroundings are great -- various planets and ships in the Star Wars universe; the villains are always cool and often extraordinary (Boba Fett! Dark Troopers!); you can jump and crawl; there's a good mapping utility and there are secret stashes of ammo. I love this game.
A strength: the game is very stable. A weakness: no saving within a level! A bonus -- the music is very good.
Get this game. If you value action and creativity, enjoy the Star Wars milieu, and don't despair over dated graphics, you will probably really like it.

When I play X-Wing, I always die in a fiery explosion in my first mission (once I was lucky, though, and got captured!), but TIE Fighter is so flexible in difficulty that even I have gotten pretty far. It's more interesting, too. Most Imperial fighters (and all of the classic movie ones)have no shields, so you must rely on your wits, aim, speed, and allies to keep from becoming toast, and if you run off to do secondary missions (for which you gain major brownie points with the Emperor and promotions through his secret "Order"), sometimes none of these can save you. Luckily, at least on the difficulties I played on (and it can get much harder for all you challenge junkies), it's not very easy to die or get captured even if you try (yes, I have. yes, I'm strange).
If you hate games but love Star Wars (or vice versa), this is going to convert you. If you're into games of any kind (unless you only play solitaire and mahjongg, in which case you probably are from another galaxy anyway and don't need to discover the Star Wars one), BUY THIS RIGHT NOW. You will not regret it. You'll get more fun for your money than from any other game, even the Sims or Grand Theft Auto, no matter how sophisticated your computer is (I still only have 400 MHz).

Hundreds if not thousands of people waited in great anticipation for the release of Star Wars Galaxies. Beta came and those of us fortunate enough to test the game diligently went about our duties testing and making bug reports. Soon it became apparent that not everything was being fixed or the bugs would crop back up in later releases.

Day of the announcement came that the game was to be released and almost unanimously the Beta Testers cried out for more time. The game was not ready. We were not listened to.

Bugs, broken professions and shoddy customer service from Sony Online Entertainment plagued us from the very start. Combat Professions were broken to the point that only 1 or 2 of them were viable in PVP combat. Yet we were told by the CRM that we had to be patient, that the Combat Revamp would fix all. That was in November of 2003.

Patiently we waited, The Jedi class (which should not even be in the game at the present) was created and revamped. "Now it's our turn" thought the Galactic Warriors on both sides.

Not to be

SOE has decided to devote all of it's programming resources to making JTL (Jump to Lightspeed) which is an expansion, instead of fixing the core game first. WE and YOU can look forward to a MASSIVELY broken game that as far as we can tell will never be fixed.

SWG was great in concept and alot of us looked forward to many years of playing.

After 3 months of beta testing and over a year of playing, this is one hard corps gamer who will never buy another thing from Sony Online Entertainment.

The game is not worth the money, and I refuse to pay for a Beta Test game while getting the shaft from the company that makes it AND being lied to all at the same time.

Star Wars: X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter (Jewel Case) Review

My kids LOVED IT from the moment it arrived in the mail. And speaking of delivery, it was here in 3 days! How's that for customer service. My sons are 14 and 11 and they both like it alot, however my 14 year old plays it the most. They're addicted to the Star Wars adventures whether it be movies, books or computer games. You can't go wrong with this one (and the price is right, too). You feel like you're actually sitting in the cockpit with the pilot. It's definitely a favorite of theirs. Order it, order it, order it!
