Lego: Universe Review

Lego: Universe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, the pro:
-Entertaining characters, animations, and ideas.
-Some good instruction/tutorial aspects, but. . . (see cons)
-Build modes are good for creative expression and a must for a lego game, but. . . (see cons)
-Cute pets.
Now the cons:
-Many of the instruction/tutorial aspects become annoying, almost to the point of frustrating, since the are location triggered and repeat every single time you pass that location. The pop-up type are only slightly annoying, while the slow-camera-pans are incredibly frustrating the 50th time you see them.
-Build modes: while there is a lot of freedom, the interface/camera can be awkward. There are even some parts that I've never been able to figure out how to line up and connect. One example would be the medium rock monster II body and medium rock monster II arm, obviously meant to go together, do not line up as there is no way to "lift" the arms off the ground.
-SHORT. Very short. The amount of actual content in the game is not worth a monthly fee. I completed every quests (except those which require 3 or more people to happen along at the same time, such as the racing quests) within the first week of playing (I pre-ordered and started playing with the early founder's launch, not the general launch). I had also collected all pets and a completed a very large majority of the achievements. This was with approximately 18-20 hours of game-play that included traveling to every vendor and standing around browsing their entire inventory, playing the pirate shooting gallery mini-game at length, spending time building on my properties, and standing around grinding the same monsters over and over in order to collect infected bricks and faction tokens (more on those later).
-MMO? Where's the MMO in this game. Let's look at what makes an MMO different than a single player game.
-Grouping: Nope. No grouping or teaming. . . other than getting lucky and having someone else join in a couple of the instanced mini-games at the same time you are doing them.
-Auction or item sale mechanism: Nope. There is a direct person to person trade mechanism. That's all.
-Chat with others: Well, you can send a "tell" or "whisper" type private message that creates a private chat channel, if you have someone specific with whom to chat. Then there is the "local" chat; this is a general open-world chat that is only seen/heard for a very, very short distance. That's a about it for chat avenues, but what about chat content? Being a game intended for a younger audience, a somewhat restrictive chat filter is expected. Unfortunately, being that it's a white-list system rather than a black-list system, it's overly restrictive. The difference is that a white-list system is one of specific inclusion, rather than one of specific exclusion. The result is that you cannot even say the names of other players or even the names of the monsters themselves at this point. "Where would I find 5 (or five) spiderlings to finish this quest?" becomes "Where would I find fingers on my hand of the long leg things to finish this quest?" (numbers, in numerical or alphabet, are restricted as a way to prevent kids from disclosing private info). Of course, you have to get lucky enough to be near to someone long enough to type this out.
-Factions, tokens, and gear: In a word, pointless.
-Factions give you specializations; classes in other games. All attributes are linked to gear, including your the skills/powers you get from specializations. So, this leads to:
-Gear: your faction specialization gear isn't the strongest gear in the game. Once you've completed all of the quests, and a large number of achievements, you'll find that you are better off using some of the reward gear from these instead of the faction gear (at least, in the case of the specialization I played), even though you forgo the powers given by specializing. And how do you get your faction gear, anyway?
-Faction tokens; the only MMO mechanic actually included in the game. Unfortunately, it's probably the worst one they could have included. You may know this mechanic as "the grind". In order to buy the faction gear, you have to collect and spend faction tokens. This is the only reason to pay a monthly subscription, since it will most likely take you months to collect enough tokens to get all of your gear. . . But then, see my previous point about gear. I will say that each faction has useful, inexpensive consumables that can also require faction tokens to purchase.
In short, what is there is generally fun and well done, there just isn't much of it, and it's not much of an MMO. Some of the critiques I have will surely be addressed in future patches (such as balancing the gear to make specializations worthwhile, which I'm sure they are working on and is probably part of the reason the third specialization for each faction has been delayed, and grouping, which they have said will be added in the future). They have also said that they are going to release frequent content additions. Unfortunately, with as small as the initial game is, I don't think they will have many subscribers left playing by the time they get there.

Guild Wars Game of the Year Review

Guild Wars Game of the Year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Guild Wars is a very solid MMORPG that strongly encourages team play. The graphics are top-notch (if not up to the cartoon levels of World of Warcraft), the play addicting, and it's well-balanced. With no monthly fee, it's one of the best bargains in the MMORPG world. I take off a star and a half for the forced team aspect as well as the focus on pure fighting versus creating a world, but add 1 back for the value proposition so give this 4 and half stars, or a 4/5 fun/overall split.
This is a tough game to master with no outright 'uber' classes. Players choose 2 of 6 fairly standard basic professions (1 tank, 1 mezzer, 1 healer/defender, 2 nukers, 1 mezzer/nuker) with the second profession lacking one of the strongest attributes of the primary (including which armor you can wear and runes you can use). As you level, besides gaining hit points you do two things - specialize in the various basic class attributes and gain access to the real key: skills. You're limited to a certain number of active skills while in combat, so strategy and careful character building take precedence over getting to level 20. Experience to buy skills can be gained through basic PvE, missions, or PvP. Using a small set of skills wisely along with picking and choosing your attribute development is far more important than getting all the 75 skills available to each profession. This is definitely not a game that is easy to blindly powerlevel.
Cleverly designed, this sidesteps a lot of the problems surrounding the genre. Rather than deal with constant kill stealing, maps and missions are instanced, and you don't have to spend a whole slug of time traveling between regions. (Once you've been to a locale, boom, it's yours.) Recovery time is minimal as is non-combat time. You don't need to spend time harvesting mats and begging a friend to make your next weapon. Instead, kill things, complete missions, and you can bring mats straight to the NPC crafter to make a custom weapon (that can only be equipped by you, likely eliminating much of the secondary market for gear in this game.)
My reservations are four fold but minor. First, the way to truly advance in this game is through missions - and the only way to accomplish many missions is in a balanced team. Thus, you're basically forced to group despite the nominal ability to solo. This really means you have to figure out proper character development early - rather tough with your first few characters until you find a good guild, and frankly, sometimes many of us feel like playing solo. Second, the lack of any real crafting system here means you fight...and fight...and fight. CoH has done well with a similar model (without the PvP aspect) and it's worked well - not to mention the biggest headaches in most MMORPGs are the messes created with a bad item creation system - but if you enjoy socializing more than fighting (the typical harvester/crafter) this isn't the game for you. Third, the game really revolves around PvP much more than PvE for the above reasons - so if you're looking for a game without conflict, this isn't it. Finally, while the focus on instanced events does prevent many of the problems found in most other MMORPGs, it also reduces the multiplayer aspect except in non-instanced locales like towns. The net effect of all of these is to slightly dilute the 'world' aspect, and for those looking for total immersion this may not be a perfect match.
Still, this is a great game and deserves 4 1/2 stars, and if you're looking for an alternative to the hordes of WoW that strongly encourages teaming this should be at the top of your list. One final note: this actually runs quite well even on my soon-to-be discarded Athlon 1100 and is geared towards doing well on slightly older systems - and even 56k modems! - unlike most new games. Big plus.

Star Trek Online Review

Star Trek Online
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first heard that Cryptic Studios was taking over production of STO from Perpetual Entertainment, I was thrilled. Perpetual had effectively done everything in its power to alienate the Trekkers who would be playing the game, and Cryptic had a solid reputation with me from their work done on City of Heroes/Villains.
Star Trek Online ultimately proved disappointing to me. I bought the Collector's Edition, which is very nicely packaged and includes a slew of freebie passes to hand out to your friends, a cool-looking replica of the new combadge featured in the game, and a very nice selection of production art. The game installs easily and once the patcher finishes updating, you're ready to go. Character creation is very involved, enabling you to customize virtually to your heart's content. Human, Vulcan, Bolian, Betazoid, non-joined Trill, Andorian...or get really creative & invent your very own 100% original Star Trek alien species! You choose Tactical, Engineering or Science career path, the only difference between which is the powers granted for use in space & ground combat.
Combat is the primary focus of STO, with a greater subjective focus on ground combat over space--which was sad for me, because I enjoyed space combat so much more. There's minimal "exploration", really no boldly going anywhere 100's of players haven't already been. There is an economy, which is strange really, but nice work has been done trying to shoehorn it into the canon. The levelling pace in STO is INSANE. You begin as a lowly Ensign. You're rapidly promoted to Lieutenant, and from there you'll go to Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain, and finally Rear Admiral. Each rank (aside from Ensign, which has 1, and RA which has 5) has 10 ranks. I rocketed all the way through to RA5 in what felt like no time at all, and I soloed 98% of the game. (This from the guy who took ~4 years to finally get 1 character to level 50 in City of Villains.) Unfortunately, STO suffers the exact same disease as any other MMO: Once you get to max level, there are only two things to do: PvP & large-scale raids. Since I'd rather gouge out my heart with a plastic butterknife than do either of those, I guess I'm done.
Klingon play is 99% PvP. There's some minimal PvE content, and they say there's more coming, but...meh.
I liked my time in STO. I want to love this game. Unfortunately, it was all over too fast & wound up feeling really rather empty. There's very little "Star Trek" feeling to the game; I know that's a meaningless statement without some examples to back it up, but I suppose it's more subjective than anything else. There are other players in the game--you see them whizzing past in their own starships--but there's no real conversation. No chatter, no roleplay, no...nothing. It's a Massively Single-Player Online Not-Quite-Role-Playing Game.

This is a good collection of games. Like the previous poster I had the same error when trying to install. Luckily I found a fix:
Open My Computer > C: > Program Files > Common Files.
Drag the folder InstallShield to your desktop.
Try installing the application again.
Once this was done, the programs installed fine.
As for the games, my favorite is Everquest 2 but all of them offer something interesting for MMO players. No one really has the time to play all of these games, but this a good inexpensive way to try them all out.

If you really want to jump online for a massive gaming experience, The Station Access Collection is your complete ticket. This collection gives you five award-winning, massively multiplayer online games, with 30 days free game time for each included for new accounts. The Station Access Collection includes Planetside: Aftershock, Star Wars: Galaxies, The Matrix Online, Everquest: Evolution and Everquest II. All excellent and engaging games by themselves, this collection represents all the online gaming you are going to need for a long time.
Planetside: Aftershock Planetside: Aftershock is itself a compilation that includes PlanetSide, with the Core Combat expansion pack and the new BattleFrame Robotics action pack included. This game throws you into a futuristic all-out-war on the planetary continents of Auraxis, where you must engage your enemies in large-scale battles or tactical base assaults. Players must decide upon their allegiance and enlist in the army of their choice amongst three unique empires fighting for total domination. As battles are fought and experience gained, characters can choose to advance in more than 30 different combat specialties, including infantry, sniper, stealth commando, engineer, hacker, medic, pilot, driver and more. And with the new BattleFrame Robotics pack, players are put in control of giant mechanized robots, each with multiple weapons systems at their command.
Star Wars: Galaxies Star Wars: Galaxies lets you create a character by choosing from male or female versions of eight different Star Wars races, including humans and wookiees, as well as the fish-faced mon calamari, the bug-eyed rodians, and more. The most important part of the character creation process is choosing your starting profession, whether is be as the artisan, brawler, entertainer, marksman, or scout. Then you must grow your character by gaining experience points, not simply by generically killing monsters or completing typical missions you'll find in other role-playing games, but rather by repeatedly using the specific skills that are most important to your character. The basic starting professions actually branch off into more than 20 different advanced professions, which become available as you master the skill paths of your starting profession. It's easy to enter into combat in Star Wars: Galaxies, as characters need only venture a short distance from any of the various starting locations before they will run into myriads of creatures that can be killed for experience points. Star Wars: Galaxies' fighting characters have access to different special abilities that can cause more damage or hinder the abilities of their enemies in some way, and these characters will gain new abilities as they improve their skills. Thanks to its impressive visuals, authentic Star Wars music and sound effects, Star Wars: Galaxies will get you as close to living in the Star Wars universe as you'll ever be.
The Matrix Online The Matrix Online puts you directly in the middle of Matrix itself, a place also known as the Metro World, and the story line picks up after the conclusion of The Matrix Revolutions. It is a time of uneasy truce between humans and machines, with a third group called the exiles -- self-aware programs that have their home in the Matrix -- that further complicates matters. You play as a newly awakened "redpill," a human freed from servitude and made recently conscious of the nature of the Matrix and the state of the real world. Being human, you start out in the service of Zion, who'll help train you to survive and even thrive in The Matrix. But for you rabble rousers, you'll soon have the option of choosing to align yourself with any of the three organizations vying for domination of the Matrix. One of the more compelling features of The Matrix Online is how it doesn't force you to lock yourself into a particular character profession; instead the game allows you to customize your character's proficiencies and make dramatic changes to your skill set on the fly. Also, each character's set of statistics, such as perception and belief, predispose them toward one style of play or another. Gameplay is primarily turn-based combat that occurs during randomly generated missions in search of targets or objects. You earn currency, experience points, and loot (such as weapons and other items) from accomplishing missions and defeating opponents. Many missions have multiple stages, and while it's possible to finish them on your own, it's much more efficient to plow through them with a group of other players. The Matrix Online allows players to form groups of up to a dozen, called "crews," that are more permanent in nature, and multiple crews can come together to form a "faction." In addition to fighting foes using hand-to-hand combat, guns, and viruses, characters can create useful items by "compiling" them. One of the most enticing aspects of The Matrix Online is the promise of an evolving storyline that develops based on each players' actions, ensuring that you will keep coming back not just for the thrill of the game, but in order to see how the story turns out.
Everquest: Evolution and Everquest II As the game that originally helped create the market for the massive multiplayer online role-playing genre, the Everquest line of role-playing games require little explanation. Both Everquest games -- Evolution and Everquest II -- take place in the world of Norrath, but in Everquest II Norrath has been stricken by a cataclysmic event that caused civilization to virtually collapse, leaving only two main metropolises intact. In both Evolution and Everquest II, you must choose your character's race, profession, and alignment before you head out in to the world to gain experience, win renown, and hopefully become rich and powerful beyond your wildest dreams. EverQuest: Evolution features the original game plus all of the expansion packs released so far, including The Ruins of Kunark, The Scars of Velious, The Shadows of Luclin, The Planes of Power, and The Legacy of Ykesha. Everquest II includes the new world order, a ton of original content, breathtaking new graphics, and several tweaks to gameplay, such as a purely player-versus-environment gameplay design that removes the original Everquest's option of attacking other players. As one of the most participated in and deeply developed massively-multiplayer online games ever created, both Everquest: Evolution and Everquest II will provide you with virtually endless entertainment and challenges.

After playing many MMO's with my husband, We have been waiting for this games release since playing Kotor 1 & 2. Since this game will be Kotor 3, 4, 5 etc the graphics and story plots caught are attention immediately. The Dice roll to determine who will answer the NPC was a nice touch for group PVE. I am hoping that I become one with the SWTOR story and have many years of enjoyment.
Just waiting for a release date at the moment.

Star Trek Online Review

Star Trek Online
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Star Trek Online has been hyped for quite a long time and after a little drama (company changes / rumors of vaporware) it is finally released.
Starting Up:
When starting out I was presented with the same basic "create your character" sequence that is common with most MMOs. A somewhat unique feature is to be able to give yourself specific traits. Character customization is good and keeps everybody looking different. You also get to pick whether you want to be part of the Federation or Klingon Empire (each comprises several different races). In this part of the game you also select what you want your ship to look like. You can do a reasonable amount of customization to your ship which keeps things looking a little unique between everybody. The intro/tutorial does a decent job of walking you through the basics of the interface and interaction with the world.
Game Play:
After everything is set up you start out by doing missions for different people. After you get your missions, you leave the space dock and "fly off" to your mission location. What I found quickly is that the missions consist of two types. Type one is essentially "go to this location and kill the bad guys". Type two is "go to this location, beam to the surface, and kill the bad guys".
As you kill more bad guys and complete your missions, you gain experience to improve your abilities (most of which help you to kill bad guys faster). After you gain enough experience you gain a new rank (go from Lt. to Lt. Cmdr.). Each rank contains 10 grades. So the total number of "levels" you can obtain is 50 I believe. After gaining rank you can buy better ships... so that you can more easily kill the bad guys.
Crafting/Gathering:
One feature is the ability to scan and collect resources. While traveling around you will come across - or can scan for - anomalies. When found you can scan them up close and collect different resources. These are used for the extremely simplistic crafting system. The idea is that you bring your different items that you have collected from the anomalies to a person and they will use them to upgrade some ship or personal item you are carrying. The idea isn't as bad as the implementation. During the time I've played so far you are extremely limited as to what you can upgrade and what upgrades are done. The upgrades also don't get you items that are really worth the effort of gathering the resources.
Exploration:
Not too familiar with this but my understanding is that you basically go around and complete missions (Kill stuff) for a group of systems within a sector. Then you are awarded exploration points - or something like that - which you can use to buy ship or personal items. Not much emphasis was put on this part of the game from what I can tell so far.
I haven't got into the PvP part of the game so that is absent from this review.
Pros:
You get to be a ship captain in a star trek environment.
If you liked the combat based episodes of Star Trek then this game is tailored for you.
Space combat mechanics is fairly well done and interesting.
A "Hold your hand" approach to game play. (Could be a con if you like the sandbox approach)
Cons:
If you are picky about graphics quality you will be disappointed.
Pretty much everything in the game is "instanced" and separated by "rooms". What this means is that you are never in a true "Massively" multiplayer environment. Most of the rooms you are in have roughly 50 people and the instances have even less.
Even with the instancing and rooms, the game universe feels small.
The game suffers from the typical "grind" to progress issues.
The point of the game is to shoot anything that moves (i.e. If you're not sure, shoot it). Many feel that this is not what Star Trek was/is about.
Little emphasis placed on Crafting/Gathering and Exploration.
Overall the game will appeal to people who want to play specifically because it is Star Trek. As far as an MMO is concerned... it is not. I suspect that even Star Trek fans (like myself) will want more than what is offered here. I've found the general consensus from people who participated in the open beta is that the game has so much potential but falls short on the delivery.
My recommendation is to wait a few months to buy the game until it is complete and some of the "Afterthought" features are finished.

This isn't a review for the game. This is a review for the 60-day online timecard.
The card was easy to use, just go to your Cryptic account at [...] and enter in the timecard's key number where you would normally put your Paypal or Credit Card information on the subscription page, make sure you select the the option for pre-paid timecard before you enter in the timecard's key or it will not work. Easy and quick.
NOTE: The timecard is stackable meaning that if you just bought the game you will have 30 days play time already. You can enter in this kind of card at any point and it will ADD the 60 days to whatever remaining time you have on the account. So if you had 15 days left over from the retail copy of the game or another timecard it would add 60 days to that making it 75 days of play time remaining. It does not cancel out or make you lose already paid for time so add the cards whenever you like. I prefer to do this right away so I don't lose them.

Hundreds if not thousands of people waited in great anticipation for the release of Star Wars Galaxies. Beta came and those of us fortunate enough to test the game diligently went about our duties testing and making bug reports. Soon it became apparent that not everything was being fixed or the bugs would crop back up in later releases.

Day of the announcement came that the game was to be released and almost unanimously the Beta Testers cried out for more time. The game was not ready. We were not listened to.

Bugs, broken professions and shoddy customer service from Sony Online Entertainment plagued us from the very start. Combat Professions were broken to the point that only 1 or 2 of them were viable in PVP combat. Yet we were told by the CRM that we had to be patient, that the Combat Revamp would fix all. That was in November of 2003.

Patiently we waited, The Jedi class (which should not even be in the game at the present) was created and revamped. "Now it's our turn" thought the Galactic Warriors on both sides.

Not to be

SOE has decided to devote all of it's programming resources to making JTL (Jump to Lightspeed) which is an expansion, instead of fixing the core game first. WE and YOU can look forward to a MASSIVELY broken game that as far as we can tell will never be fixed.

SWG was great in concept and alot of us looked forward to many years of playing.

After 3 months of beta testing and over a year of playing, this is one hard corps gamer who will never buy another thing from Sony Online Entertainment.

The game is not worth the money, and I refuse to pay for a Beta Test game while getting the shaft from the company that makes it AND being lied to all at the same time.

Star Wars Galaxies: The Total Experience Review

Star Wars Galaxies: The Total Experience

Quite possibly the very best idea for a MMORPG, and also, quite possibly the very worse execution as well. The idea of an online game set in the Star Wars Universe was definitely the most enticing game idea I had ever seen. I actually had to buy a whole new computer to play it two years ago.
This game has, or to say, had dozens of new innovative ideas. It was the first MMORPG to use a skill system, instead of a level system, since I had played UO. It had the greatest crafting system I had ever seen in any game. It was also the first online game I know to include professions specifically aimed towards casual gamers. Players could choose to be Dancers or Musicians. You could place your own houses all over huge sandbox style planets.
Most of things were flawed, and had issues with something being too strong, or not strong enough. For the longest time the game's developers tried unsuccessfully to balance and fix the flaws with the game. A great deal or progress was made in the twenty-two months since the game's launch, but evidentially not enough. The developers created a patch called the "Combat Upgrade" or CU for short.
The combat upgrade fundamentally traded a very flawed, though original and innovative combat system, for a very flawed bland overused combat system. The upgrade switched from a skill based system, to the overly used level system that so many other games have. A unique armor system that involved different damages and certain enemies and armories having certain protections and vulnerabilities was replaced with simply all armor having very similar protections to everything, as well as every enemy having the exact same protections now as well.
Though it was named the Combat Upgrade, this change greatly effected all the non-combative professions as well. Medical professions lost the ability to craft their own medicines, and now simply heal without them. (much like priests or clerics in other games) They may only heal in combat now, if they wish to advance through their profession. Crafting has been made much more simple, and weapons and armor now all very similar stats, and the difference between an exceptional craftsman and a inexperienced one is now very little.
As for it being Star Wars, it's more like Everquest with Star Wars names and characters pasted over it now. The game is set between Episodes IV and V and yet there are dozens of Jedi running around. Ithorians, a pacifist race according to the Star Wars Canon, have 3 suits of exclusive battle armor and can learn just as many destructive skills as other races. The rebels in the game are never hiding and always very much out in the open.
To be a Jedi in the game you must travel a very long, boring, and tedious path full of time sinks and tons of grinding. If you become a Jedi, all that remains is to continue grinding to learn new Jedi skills. They only way to gain XP as a Jedi, good or bad, is to simply kill things over and over again with a lightsaber. Jedi in Star Wars Galaxies is simply another combat profession with different weapons. After you reach Jedi there are no quests or missions for you, at least none that a Non-Jedi could do.
The Total Experience is priced extremely cheap for the reason this game isn't worth much anymore. Both the expansions mostly eye candy and offer little replay value. Jump to Light speed adds a player's chance to fly in space and fight other starships. However space combat is very redundant and the quests and missions for space are all very much the same. NPC ships only tactic seems to be fly circles around you and make you chase them until you get off enough hits to kill them. Rage of the Wookiees added the Wookiee homeworld. However, unlike the other ten planets in the game, which were massive sandbox styles maps that could take a great deal of time to explore, Kashyyyk is simply a large themepark to amuse players. You're limited to trails which lead to instanced dungeons, there's very little to explore. The quests on Kashyyyk are simple quests that offer novelty items from the movies. Such as a suit of Clone Trooper Armor, or a picture of General Grievous.
I've been playing since the game's launch late in June of 2003, and have been playing it regularly since. The developers at Sony Online Entertainment have constantly ignored concerns and requests from the player base, and continue to make horrible decisions based on things they never explain to it's loyal customers. The most recent change to the game as left me with no friends left to play with, and can't even find a reason to log on anymore. SOE seems to not only know nothing about Star Wars, but also nothing about managing a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game as well. If you like Star Wars I'd recommend Knights of the Old Republic, Battlegrounds, or Episode III. If you like online games you might want to try City of Heroes or World of Warcraft. But even if you like both Star Wars and Online games, I wouldn't recommend this game to you.

Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided
*Sigh* Where to begin...
This game could be better named:
"Star Wars Galaxies: A Development Team Vs. A Player base".
Never in all my life, have I seen a company alienate so many people in pursuit of the almighty dollar. It's truly sickening. I WAS a 20-month veteran of the game, I had been playing since week one. PLEASE, READ ON...
In the beginning...
This game was alright; it was fun, it was unique, and it was totally bug-ridden and unbalanced. Over the course of the last 20 months, the SOE Dev team have made us promise after promise to do certain things to fix and enhance this game. They in fact did very little, if anything at all. They milked us. They exploited the "Star Wars" name to make a buck. They made promise after promise after promise... and never delivered squat. Don't believe me? Just ask any "Smuggler" in the game for their opinion.
They strung us along and led us to believe that the "fixes" to the game were right around the corner! Instead, they were hard at work on an "Expansion Pack" to sell us! And then once again "promised us" that the fixes we've all been waiting for were the next big thing waiting for us, "just hang on, this game is going to be great!" They promised us that they were going to do this "Combat Upgrade" and do it right, and it "wouldn't be released until it's ready!"
We all had a lot of hope, we thought that they had finally figure out that they had totally screwed up and were trying to make amends with a player base on the brink of total collapse. God, how wrong we all were...
Well, much to everyone's surprise, they made the announcement that the long awaited "CU" would be coming out along with the "Rage of the Wookiees" expansion pack! Uhhhmmm... did I miss something somewhere? The alpha test for the "CU" was supposed to begin in January, it never happened. Beta testing began in April, 4 whole weeks before it was supposed to go to live! We all rolled up our sleeves and dove in. I think after the first week or so, the sad realization of what was happening to our game begun to sink in...
The CU was supposed to go live on May 5th. SOE decided to push it to live a whole 2 weeks sooner than that. Honestly, with all the bugs that were still in beta, and then in live, beta could have gone on another 4-6 months! I guess they figured they could milk us all a little more and dump this beta on the live servers and let us pay to test it. Why am I not surprised?
The CU itself is unplayable. It has become Everquest in space, or "EverStar Galaxies QuestWars" as we call it. There are just too many things to list. There are a lot of other more technical reviews which go into much more detail over on the page for the stand-alone game.
As you all can imagine, the player community was totally enraged! We went to the SWG Forum boards to voice our concerns. The only response we ever got back from SOE was THOUSANDS of deleted threads and players banned from the forums (I was one of them). Facing futility, a large portion of the player base has left the game, permanently this time.
Then 6 whole months later, after they finally figured out that the CU did indeed suck, they let loose the NGE. They released it just two days after releasing the Obi-Wan expansion which had "special items" for classes that were about to disappear. 32 professions reduced to 9. The NGE is the final nails in the coffin of this game. It totally destroyed it. It became some sort of a twisted MMO/FPS wannabe. Fake and cartoony and dumbed down to where a 5 year old could figure out how to mash the buttons. It is so bad that even Smedly himself said that it wasn't good. And a recent developer conference in Austin the quote was "learn from our mistakes". It's widly rumored that the game will be "sunset" soon (they're gonna pull the plug on it). This "Complete" (I'm feeling sick here) edition is their last ditch effort to milk a little more cash out of it before it's all over. This is just not how you do business. I personally will NEVER deal with Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) EVER again. I DO NOT pay MY HARD EARNED MONEY to be lied to, deceived, ignored, strung along, censored, and banned for voicing my concerns. I do not pay money to folks who treat me, a PAYING CUSTOMER, in this fashion.
Star Wars Galaxies is dead. Servers are empty. People have moved on to other games where folks know how to appreciate their patrons. If you are a fan of Star Wars, and this is the only reason I ever started playing this game to begin with, you will be sadly disappointed!
SWG is nothing more than an exploit of a title, a milk machine. I for one, am tired of being milked.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

I would have previously rated this game 4 or 5 stars. Unfortunately I am no longer able to play due to a 27 hr download via dial up for a recent patch that I am unable to make(DSL and Cable are not available in my area). Poor planning by Sony to inconvenience paying customers, especially in a shrinking market now dominated by XBox and PS2 gamers. It would have been so much easier to add this new patch to the upcoming Wookie expansion due out fairly soon. I'm disappointed to cancel an account that I've had for almost 2 years. I've got to spend my gaming $$$ elsewhere now.

Star Wars Galaxies is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that lets you assume the role of nearly any type of character in the Star Wars universe and interact with thousands of other players' characters as well as established characters from the movies. You can be a shady smuggler, like Han. You can be a cold bounty hunter, like Boba Fett. You can even be a Jedi, like Luke. You can create and develop any character you like and seek out adventure and excitement as you see fit. Best of all, the game never ends--it persists and changes online, even when you're not playing. Interaction with other players is what this game is all about; you can get together with your Rebel friends and raid an Imperial bunker, or work with other Imperial troops to squash Rebel scum. You can instruct young Jedi in the ways of the Force, or you can work with other bounty hunters to hunt down outlaw Jedi and bring them to justice. Or you can manage a cantina or parts shop and marvel at the galaxy's vast variety of heroes, scum, and villainy.

Star Wars Galaxies: Starter Kit Review

Star Wars Galaxies: Starter Kit

DONT BUY THIS GAME. You will absolutely regret it after the "honeymoon" phase of the game is over (probbly 1 week).
This game is completely bug-riddled to a point where its hardly playable. The developers have been aware of most of these bugs and only fix them months after they appear, if at all. These are major bugs which could be noticeable with 5 minutes of testing, however SOE and LucasArts dont seem to have ANY QA department.
Every patch introduces new MAJOR, GAMEBREAKING BUGS and impliments changes that are the REVERSE of what SWG players want. Today's patch, for instance, made jedi completely unplayable as it broke all their ranged attacks.
In addition, rather than adding to the game, SOE consistantly takes away from it. And they don't put back in what they take away. For instance, Battlefields, a Force Rank System for jedi, Bounty Hunter Player Missions, Faction Bases, a Force Sensitive Village, and more are all examples of things they have spent months developing and then just decided to remove them. Not a good value at all for the customer, as they are paying $15 a month for that wasted development time.
EVERY PATCH NERFS SOMETHING. Players are quitting left and right because all of their equipment keeps getting destroyed by patches, and SOE doesnt care. For instance, you could spend months and months and millions of credits on Skill Enhancers, Armor, Weapons, and other equipment, and then SOE will introduce new changes that disable you from wearing that equipment or break the effect they have. This has happened OVER AND OVER AGAIN and will continue to happen.
THE XP GRIND IS SLOW AND TEDIOUS AND YOU WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO SELECT ONE PROFESSION FOR YOUR ENTIRE SWG CAREER. The game used to have 32 unique professions and you could pick whatever skills you wanted. Now you can only choose from 1 and if you dont like it, too bad. You're stuck with it. This is especially bad because SOE ROUTINELY UNBALANCES PROFESSIONS and doesnt fix them. Right now Medic can beat any other profession easily, and SOE could care less. They really don't attempt to balance the game at all.
The servers are EXTEMELY LAGGY for MMORPG servers. If you choose to go jedi, you will only be able to hit mobs and opponents who stand still. If they run away from you, then you will actually have to RUN AHEAD OF THEM to compensate for lag and hit them. Try doing that in Player vs Player; thats why jedi can't beat any other profession and is by far the weakest choice. Although 90% of the server are jedi. Real starwarsy, huh?
Finally, and by far the biggest gripe players have, is that the DEV team doesn't listen to players input whatsoever. Reported bugs are not fixed, and suggestions are not acted upon. The developers make the game how they see it and could care less about player feedback. They will introduce new, gamebreaking changes a few days before they go LIVE and not even inform the community in advance. Exploits are not responded to. And rather than add to the game and to the profession, they simply remove things from the game and nerf professions. For instance, originally to get jedi a player had to grind for up to a year, but when she finished, it was worth the effort. Then, the devs nerfed jedi to a point where they were absolutely useless but let everyone be jedi. Real fair to those people who worked hard for a year, right?
To summarize, STAY AWAY. This game is infested with BUGS that dont get fixed, LAGGY servers, incompetant developers, and horrible gameplay. Once the "newness" of the game wears off, you will wonder why you ever wasted your money on this trash.
