Command & Conquer: Generals Review

Command and Conquer: Generals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of the Command and Conquer series, so buying Generals didn't require any thought. We were rewarded with great graphics and amazing multiplayer gameplay.
First, the good. The graphics are quite impressive, definitely a step up from previous games. The various terrains - from snow to sand to grass to concrete - are well done. The trees sway in the wind. The units leave little tracks as they move, the construction of buildings makes you really feel like you're watching an army base get built.
The sound and music is well matched and makes the game feel realistic. Controls all work just the way you'd hope they would - after so many games they really have that down to a science.
On the down side, the usual problems in strategy gaming exist here. pathfinding isn't always perfect, units get stuck against buildings or in chasms. The campaign missions help you learn your skills but aren't extremely challenging.
Still, as with just about every game that comes out today, the built in gameplay is merely a training ground for the real challenge of multiplay. There's no way a computer could compete with the challenge posed by a real human being with experience and knowledge at the other end of the map. This game really shines in multiplayer. The three sets of units are well balanced, and if you get yourself onto a large map with teammates and opponents, you'll be hooked for months.
Skirmish mode is quite fun too, earning medals for different accomplishments.
Definitely a great game for any strategy gaming fan!

Evil Genius Review

Evil Genius
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Evil Genius is an amazingly addictive strategy game (sort of a Sims game). It has great humor, great graphics, great sound, and lots of great gameplay. Unfortunately it has some moments of really boring gameplay as well as some downright frustration.
In the game you build an evil lair and send your minions around the world doing evil deeds. Meanwhile you raise cash, more minions, build a bigger base, buid traps, and defend your base against the nasty do-gooder agents (ala James Bond) trying to take you down.
Doing all of these things is great fun. Just deciding on your base design is fun and the graphic animations are terrifc so just watching things happen is entertaining. Unfortunately you really need to read between the lines of the goals as well as read the manual a few times (and the online help) to figure out exactly how things work. It is very easy to get stuck in moments where not much is really going on and you can't figure out what you are supposed to do next. It is very easy for the boring moments to go on for hours.
Fortunately the game will easily take you 40 hours or more to complete and you will certainly want to play it at least one more time to incorporate all you learned on your first play.
Overall, Evil Genius is a great mix of strategy and campy humor that will probably keep you playing long into the night. Just don't be surprised if some of those hours are frustrating.

Command & Conquer 3 Deluxe Edition Review

Command and Conquer 3 Deluxe Edition

Well what can I say, this game is excellent. Like all of the Command and Conquer games, the campaign mode, for all three factions, is fun and addictive. The skirmish mode allows you to extend the life of the game beyond the campaigns, but if you are like myself, you will find yourself wanting to download more maps to make things more interesting. I was very impressed with the risk like, campaign map on the Kane's Wrath add on. The only downside I can think of for this game, is the difficulty in creating ones own maps and editing the game stats. The world builder program is difficult to use, compared to the map editors available for previous C&C titles. Overall the game play is excellent, the graphics are amazing and the campaign mode on it's own, with the all star cast, makes the game well worth the money.

If you liked Dungeon Keeper, you will probably like this particular game. Having objectives rather than just getting a bigger and bigger lair means you can actually have an end to the game----world domination. The difficulty level goes from very easy to fast and furious from the first level to the second, so if you like slow progression, you might be overwhelmed. Real-time strategy has never been my personal forte and when you have to have your fingers in several pies at once, it can become frustrating---putting out fires, both literally and figuratively. On the plus side, the concept is funny, the characters are interesting, and the music is cool.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam - Expansion Review

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam - Expansion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have Bad Company 2 on Steam. When I purchased the Vietnam expansion on Amazon, I simply entered the code in the Bad Company 2 main menu and Vietnam was activated without any problems. All of the content for Vietnam was apparently in the last huge patch for Bad Company 2. Vietnam is multiplayer only so those looking for a single player game have been warned. Overall, Vietnam has a different feel from BC2. The maps are huge and open, each of them are unique. There are five multiplayer maps total and all of them take place outdoors. The jungle experience and scenery is captured perfectly in this expansion. I found myself getting shot by Vietcong in rice paddies and facing intense close combat fights on jungle paths. The downside to the openness of the maps is that you will have to deal with a lot of snipers, more so than in BC2.
There are about four unique weapons for each class and the perks attained in BC2 (magnum ammo, extended mags, vehicle upgrades) are available to use. Shooting and aiming with the weapons is more difficult with just iron sights as scopes have been removed (except for sniper rifles) as well as UAVs and other high-tech equipment. It seems like the weapons do more damage also. Its pretty intense when you are facing RPK machine guns and "thumper" grenade launchers in the jungle with a beat-up M-16. This game just feels gritty and realistic.
I'm enjoying this expansion, its much more challenging and realistic than BC2 and requires a fair amount of skill and teamwork. I definitely recommend it if you liked Bad Company 2.

Mafia Review

Mafia
Average Reviews:

If you like Grand Theft Auto, you will like this game. The two games certainly follow a similar approach, although there are quite significant differences (aside from the time this game is set in).
Personally, I like the graphics in Mafia better. Overall,t he whole story is told in more style, and is much more immersive IMO.
However, GTA offers more freedom while playing the game. Mafia offers a lot of freedom too, but in order to fulfill missions, one usually sticks to one path. Some people told me they don't like that as much. Personally, I like the Mafia gameplay at least as good as the GTA gameplay. Sure, GTA gives you a mission such as "destroy this car", and you have a million ways to accomplish that. Mafia gives you a mission such as "have this race car manipulated", and naturally, there is one place to pick it up, and one place to bring it to have the work done.
While you play the game however, that difference doesn't matter very much. In fact, Mafia provides a somewhat tighter storyline to provide a more detailed, intriguing story. I personally prefer that.
Mafia also seems to have a bit more variety in the missions. They have everything from missions on foot where you shoot 1st person style, to driving missions, to even races.
I like the controls in Mafia much better than GTA. In GTA, things never seem quite right. The controls used don't work truely well when you are an foot, and they don't work very well in the cars either. But they kinda work for both. In Mafia, you use the regular FPS-style keyboard and mouse combination when you walk, and a whole different set of controls when you drive. In fact, a (force feedback) steering wheel works very well in Mafia, while I found it to work not too well at all in GTA.

This third-person 3-D action game takes place in a fictional city named Lost Heaven--a cross between New York and Chicago--and is about the daily life of a gangster from the '30s. More than 60 vehicles are available to drive through the 12 miles of environment; stop your car and get out whenever and wherever your want. Use weapons such as a Tommy gun, a Smith & Wesson model 27 Magnum, a pump-action shotgun, a baseball bat, or Molotov cocktails. Seven multiplayer modes are available via LAN or over the Internet, including Deathmatch and Capture the Flag.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Gold Edition Review

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Gold Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I find that the improvements outweigh the negatives in Civ IV. I've played Civ III for a while, and was always frustrated with the unrealistic means of making it more difficult at higher levels - such as warriors defeating Knights in battle, other Civs building wonders in record turns, things like that. In Civ IV, those issues seem to be repaired. I've found that the rules they give us for combat movements, cost, etc., are not bypassed to make the game more difficult at higher levels.
I like the added variety of leaders and their abilities, seems more realistic and helpful for long term strategy. I also like the addition of more wonders, though they have changed some of the benefits of certain wonders so I needed to get used to the same thing being different.
I also am enjoying the new "Permanent Alliance" option. I just finally used that and really liked the dimension it added to game play.
The graphics do bother me a bit - too bouncy. I've changed settings as much as I can to get away from it, but it is still a bit bouncy and makes me dizzy.
I'm also not pleased with the bug that makes the game not work with my graphics card - which I have yet to find a fix for. I am playing it on another computer. One of my son-in-laws also can't use the game since his graphics card doesn't seem to be supported. He has a much bigger, badder, multimedia computer.
It also has a problem with the online updates. I updated and had serious issues which I had to call the manufacturer to fix - couldn't start the game, couldn't uninstall the game, couldn't reinstall the game - totally useless. A Direct X fix repaired that, but I don't think I even got the update after all the work! I'm quite leary of trying again. Then my son, who also has the game, updated his and it caused serious corruption for him too. I told him what my fix was, and it didn't work for his. He has to call and see what to do now. Updates aren't supposed to break the game, they are supposed to fix it. The game works fine without the updates, so I'm going to forego any future attempts to update.

Over the last 10 years that I first installed STARCRAFT I have replayed it countless of times. Every time a new overhyped game disappoints me, this is one of the games I pull out of my library to be reminded what a GREAT PC GAME LOOKS & PLAYS LIKE! (others include UNREAL, BALDUR's GATE, GRIM FANTANGO and SHOGUN:TOTAL WAR)
Everyone has his/her favorite RTS and no one can claim that STARCRAFT introduced the futuristic RTS genre (that would be DUNE). Nevertheless, the great, crisp and clear graphics, the balanced units and the strategic terrain all contributed into turning STARCRAFT into a true classic. This is a game that passed the test of time, not only because its aging graphics are still acceptable but also because it is one of those games that stays with you. Forever.
So, the next time some gaming industry MBA (who probably could not tell an RTS from an cRPG) tables the idea of LIMITED INSTALLATIONS, what he will have primarily accomplished is to have his game forgotten within a year.

Star Trek Online Review

Star Trek Online
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I first heard that Cryptic Studios was taking over production of STO from Perpetual Entertainment, I was thrilled. Perpetual had effectively done everything in its power to alienate the Trekkers who would be playing the game, and Cryptic had a solid reputation with me from their work done on City of Heroes/Villains.
Star Trek Online ultimately proved disappointing to me. I bought the Collector's Edition, which is very nicely packaged and includes a slew of freebie passes to hand out to your friends, a cool-looking replica of the new combadge featured in the game, and a very nice selection of production art. The game installs easily and once the patcher finishes updating, you're ready to go. Character creation is very involved, enabling you to customize virtually to your heart's content. Human, Vulcan, Bolian, Betazoid, non-joined Trill, Andorian...or get really creative & invent your very own 100% original Star Trek alien species! You choose Tactical, Engineering or Science career path, the only difference between which is the powers granted for use in space & ground combat.
Combat is the primary focus of STO, with a greater subjective focus on ground combat over space--which was sad for me, because I enjoyed space combat so much more. There's minimal "exploration", really no boldly going anywhere 100's of players haven't already been. There is an economy, which is strange really, but nice work has been done trying to shoehorn it into the canon. The levelling pace in STO is INSANE. You begin as a lowly Ensign. You're rapidly promoted to Lieutenant, and from there you'll go to Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain, and finally Rear Admiral. Each rank (aside from Ensign, which has 1, and RA which has 5) has 10 ranks. I rocketed all the way through to RA5 in what felt like no time at all, and I soloed 98% of the game. (This from the guy who took ~4 years to finally get 1 character to level 50 in City of Villains.) Unfortunately, STO suffers the exact same disease as any other MMO: Once you get to max level, there are only two things to do: PvP & large-scale raids. Since I'd rather gouge out my heart with a plastic butterknife than do either of those, I guess I'm done.
Klingon play is 99% PvP. There's some minimal PvE content, and they say there's more coming, but...meh.
I liked my time in STO. I want to love this game. Unfortunately, it was all over too fast & wound up feeling really rather empty. There's very little "Star Trek" feeling to the game; I know that's a meaningless statement without some examples to back it up, but I suppose it's more subjective than anything else. There are other players in the game--you see them whizzing past in their own starships--but there's no real conversation. No chatter, no roleplay, no...nothing. It's a Massively Single-Player Online Not-Quite-Role-Playing Game.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (includes Mysteries of the Sith) Review

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (includes Mysteries of the Sith)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The thing that's realy great about this set is that you get three CDs worth of games. You get the original Dark Forces II game that has quite a bit of gameplay, PLUS the Mysteries of the Sith game that is almost as long as Jedi Knight. For the price you get a LOT of playing time.
Jedi Knight follows the path of Kyle Katarn, an ex-Imperial soldier turned rebel. His father was murdered and as the game progresses you learn the truth about your family and learn the ways of the force.
One of the interesting twists of Jedi Knight is that your alignment towards the dark side or the light side is determined by how many innocent people you kill or by certain moral decisions you make as the game progresses. You shape your own destiny and at the end of it all your decisions determine how the story turns out.
On the second game, Mysteries of the Sith, you primarialy play Mara Jade... although you also spend time in Kyle Katarn's shoes once again. Much likes its predecessor you find yourself once again going against the Empire before they destroy a Rebel base and ruin all hope the Rebellion has against defeating the Imperial forces. From there you embark on a search to find the lost Kyle Katarn and find your way through an amazingly twisted and trap ridden Sith Temple.
The thing that sets these games apart from most first person shooters is that you do more than run around and kill things. You have to make moral decisions, solve puzzles, and use tactics to your advantage. By the first hour or so of gameplay you'll easily lose yourself.
And finally, as an extra special bonus there is a hidden level on the Mysteries of the Sith CD of Cloud City that allows you to follow in Luke's footsteps from Empire strikes Back.

This isn't a review for the game. This is a review for the 60-day online timecard.
The card was easy to use, just go to your Cryptic account at [...] and enter in the timecard's key number where you would normally put your Paypal or Credit Card information on the subscription page, make sure you select the the option for pre-paid timecard before you enter in the timecard's key or it will not work. Easy and quick.
NOTE: The timecard is stackable meaning that if you just bought the game you will have 30 days play time already. You can enter in this kind of card at any point and it will ADD the 60 days to whatever remaining time you have on the account. So if you had 15 days left over from the retail copy of the game or another timecard it would add 60 days to that making it 75 days of play time remaining. It does not cancel out or make you lose already paid for time so add the cards whenever you like. I prefer to do this right away so I don't lose them.

I remember playing TIE fighter for hours when in college. Hands down one of the best games available for any computer.
The missions are designed to be difficult enough to make you try multiple times, yet I never felt the need to throw the computer out the window because I just couldn't beat that one superhard level.
For Star Wars fans, many familiar characters appear in the game such as Mon Mothma and Darth Vader (when you are a good enough pilot, you are Vader's wing man for a mission).
One of those games I play and replay. Easy to get wrapped up in and really feel like you are there. There is a reason why many critics consider this one of the best PC games ever. I think I'll get off the net and play it right now!

Star Wars: Dark Forces (Jewel Case)

My shelf is full of games I've played all the way through one time, a few I never finished, and a few I've played through a couple of times, but I've played Dark Forces many times. It was the first first-person shooter I ever played, but it's more than nostalgia that keeps me coming back. While the graphics are dated, this game is still compelling for a number of reasons: you have *real* short- and long-term missions -- not just killing, but figuring out puzzles, achieving goals, getting artifacts, etc; the weapons and gadgets are fun; the surroundings are great -- various planets and ships in the Star Wars universe; the villains are always cool and often extraordinary (Boba Fett! Dark Troopers!); you can jump and crawl; there's a good mapping utility and there are secret stashes of ammo. I love this game.
A strength: the game is very stable. A weakness: no saving within a level! A bonus -- the music is very good.
Get this game. If you value action and creativity, enjoy the Star Wars milieu, and don't despair over dated graphics, you will probably really like it.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll say right from the outset that I'm not a really huge Star Wars fan, though I did enjoy the films. But I am a first-person-shooter fan going way back to Wolfenstein 3D, and I know my FPSs and I know outstanding level design. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 has some of the best level design and by far the most memorable locations of any FPS I've ever played. Please don't confuse this with graphical splendor. Back in 1997 I was stunned at how good this game looked. Now it's 2005 and I've just now decided to play it again. And while the graphics do look ancient compared to modern games, I cannot describe what a rush it is to visit these old familiar 'places'. The sense of 'place' is so powerful, I felt like I was visiting real places I had actually been to before. It was like re-visiting real places instead of virtual ones. Look folks, if you are a graphics junkie, you've really got no business playing any game older than 3 or 4 years old. But if gameplay is your thing, this is your game. The levels are absolutely VAST. I have never in my life felt such vertigo when playing a game. And that includes all modern ones. As far as inducing vertigo goes, this game has never been challenged. Even Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy don't come close to matching this game's dizzying heights (or vast distances). The 'puzzles' are really quite logical and fit right into the game. Playing an old game like this is akin to watching an old movie. Sure, the technology is old, but the heart is still there, and both old and new can be enjoyed equally if you can accept each on its own terms. Replaying Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 has been a real treat for me. I just can't believe I waited 8 years to do it! Also, for reference, it runs superbly at its highest settings on my Windows XP w/ SP2, Athlon XP 2600+ with 1 gig ram, and an NVidia 6600GT w/ 128 video ram. Using a Logitech optical mouse and am have absolutely no control or video issues. In-game settings: 1600 x 1200 resolution, checked the box for 3D acceleration and turned on every option there is, including entering '32' in the 'Minumum Texture Size' box and checked the box for 'Back Buffer In System Memory'. Also increased view size to just short of maximum. Only problem I'm having is manually saving the game by exiting out to the save menu. When I save the game that way, the game will crash to desktop, but the save DOES work, so I just re-load the game and in 10 seconds I'm going again. QUICKSAVE however, works without a hitch, so that's what I use most of the time. Also, each time I start the game, I have to set the graphics options...annoying, but nothing to it, and well worth the small hassle to enjoy this game at its highest settings on a modern computer. Aside from the manual save glitch, it's VERY stable on my rig. I can play for hours with not a single visual problem. There are very few 'classic' games that run this well on a modern WinXP rig.

Simply the best driving game I've played. Almost too much fun! It's terrific to play when you don't have much time to play. A race can be won in minutes or you can play for hours. Worth the $!

Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Outcast" is the 3rd of the "Jedi Knight" PC games - or the 4th of the "Dark Forces" game, and the 1st of the series built using the "Quake III" engine. A sequel to `97's "Jedi Knight", "Outcast" reunites you with ex-Imperial Commando, ex-Rebel Mercenary Kyle Katarn. Now firmly working with the "New Republic" (established by the rebellion after their victory over the Empire), Katarn is also an ex-Jedi by the game's first mission. With Jan Ors, his lovely & trusty sidekick, Katarn infiltrates a stronghold belonging to holdout Imperial forces known as "The Remnant". What appears at first to be a routine battle with Remnant forces reveals signs of a larger and more ominous plot to create an army of Dark Jedi - a plan that includes an ambitious Imperial governor, an outcast of Luke Skywalker's Jedi academy, the Valley of the Jedi (from the last game), hundreds of evil - if inexperienced Jedi Knights - and a form of armor impervious to lightsabres. In confronting the plan, you'll travel to many locales both familiar and new to SW fans - from an Imperial prison to the Bespin cloud city of "Empire Strikes Back", from the "floating city" of Nar Shadaa to a Remnant base hidden in an asteroid belt; from the corridors of a huge Remnant battlecruiser to the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 (last seen at the end of the first SW movie). The story is tight - you don't choose missions, the plot will direct you. Along the way, you'll encounter familiar SW characters like Luke Skywalker & Lando Calrissian. Cut-scenes (using the game-engine, and not the FMV of "Jedi Knight") drive the story. (Everybody hated the video scenes from "Jedi Knight" - everybody but me; compared to the second trilogy, the FMV scenes of "Jedi Knight" were pure SW gold.)
The game is intense - the handful of evil Jedi from "Jedi Knight" are replaced with hordes of "Reborn" here, many in that special armor; even stormtroopers - reliable blaster-fodder from the movies and the older games - are tougher than before. To get through the game's many levels will not infrequently require special puzzle-solving skills. Individual levels are very long, and the game itself may consume about a month's worth of late-night Jedi-frag sessions. (Comparable gameplay wrapped up "Voyager: Elite Force" - the "Star Trek" Quake3 game - in about a week.) Some challenges seem needless - with players being forced to re-play the same the moment because they couldn't handle simple things like walking a ledge or jumping. The game could also have done without sniping - where you're picked off by some distant shooter you'd never even know existed until after he'd killed you. Lastly, the story - while governing the game - isn't all that compelling. It's your basic One-Jedi-versus-many-evil-Jedi-and-Imperial-stormtroopers story - an afterthought guaranteed to have you prowling many corridors in search of power-ups.
The Quake3 engine is breathtaking - smoke/vapor and laser effects are beautiful, and the smooth animation means that saber duels are much closer to those in the movies than to the saber battles of "Jedi Knight". The game also excels in visualizing vast distances (like the insides of the huge Bespin ventilation shafts) and the sounds of distant characters, and different atmospheric settings - from the claustrophobic corridors of a starship, to the sweeping avenues of Bespin; the steamy jungles of Yavin 4 to the hallowed halls of the Massassi Temple.
The obvious question is whether you should get this game instead of "Jedi Academy" - the other SW/Quake3 game, or whether your owning that newer game obviates having to get this one. "Outcast" is more challenging than "Academy" in almost every way - tougher Jedi battles, longer levels, more of them, more tenacious AI, hard puzzles - resulting in many moments that have to be re-played as apparently insurmountable. Casual players will probably be turned off by "Outcast", and should stick with "Academy". Those who feel ready for something more than stormtroopers and jedi mind-tricks will be more than satisfied with "Outcast". Also, while I may just be jaded, I've yet to find a SW game that matches the experience I enjoyed playing "Jedi Knight" back in 1997.
MY FULLY ARMED AND OPERATIONAL BATTLE-STATION: a P4 running 2 GHz, with 512MB of RAM and a GeForce III card kept the force (and the action) flowing smoothly on my system. Though an old game, prospective buyers should check the LA website to make sure their graphics cards are supported. My original Savage card, ably handling "Elite Force" was hamstring by this game despite both using the same graphics engine.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II Review

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II

I didn't expect too much going into this game. I played the first Force Unleashed on the console, and while that game had some problems, it was still very fun at times. However, Force Unleashed 2 fails to fix the problems of the original, and introduces a host of new issues.
I think my main issue with this game was its length. Even playing the game on hard, with numerous restarts due to technical issues, and having to wait through the annoying, unskippable logo movies, the game still was over in just a few hours. It felt much shorter than the first game, and was not even worth the discounted [...] price. The gameplay, while still pretty fun at times, got very repetitive, simply because I tended to use the same tactic (grip object or stormtroopers, lightning, and throw) on practically every enemy in the game. The saber combat, another weak area of the first game, was not improved at all. I found myself using the same attack over and over again (slash, slash, lightning). The longer moves were easily blocked or interrupted, and I had to force myself to use them just for the sake of variety.
I also experienced a number of serious technical issues, from pre-rendered cut-scenes frequently failing to play, to crashes during loading, to completely broken physics where stormtroopers would float in mid-air like it was in zero-gravity. In addition, the game is capped at 30 frames per second, making everything feel a bit choppy. These problems seriously detracted from what would already have been a mediocre game.
All in all, I've found the Force Unleashed to be wholly inferior to Jedi Knight 2 and Jedi Academy. It's proof that all the fancy technologies in the world like DMM, Euphoria, and Havok can't replace solid game mechanics and a strong story.
