Command & Conquer: Generals Review

Command and Conquer: Generals

I'm a huge fan of the Command and Conquer series, so buying Generals didn't require any thought. We were rewarded with great graphics and amazing multiplayer gameplay.
First, the good. The graphics are quite impressive, definitely a step up from previous games. The various terrains - from snow to sand to grass to concrete - are well done. The trees sway in the wind. The units leave little tracks as they move, the construction of buildings makes you really feel like you're watching an army base get built.
The sound and music is well matched and makes the game feel realistic. Controls all work just the way you'd hope they would - after so many games they really have that down to a science.
On the down side, the usual problems in strategy gaming exist here. pathfinding isn't always perfect, units get stuck against buildings or in chasms. The campaign missions help you learn your skills but aren't extremely challenging.
Still, as with just about every game that comes out today, the built in gameplay is merely a training ground for the real challenge of multiplay. There's no way a computer could compete with the challenge posed by a real human being with experience and knowledge at the other end of the map. This game really shines in multiplayer. The three sets of units are well balanced, and if you get yourself onto a large map with teammates and opponents, you'll be hooked for months.
Skirmish mode is quite fun too, earning medals for different accomplishments.
Definitely a great game for any strategy gaming fan!

Galactic Civilizations 2: Dread Lords Review

Galactic Civilizations 2: Dread Lords
Average Reviews:

If you've ever played and loved Master Of Orion 2, your prayers have been answered. I downloaded the game from GalCiv's site (although you can save $6 by purchasing it from Amazon, but I couldn't wait), and it is a wonderful game. At the time of writing this review, I still haven't slept since downloading it. I haven't done that with a game in years.
Where does this succeed where Master Of Orion 3 and Imperium Galactica failed?
1) The GUI - The interface to the game is very streamlined, simple, and uncluttered. MOO2's greatest feature was how fast you could navigate all of the options. This interface reminds you of the great MOO2 interface with big buttons, a solid feel, and a nice heavy "click" on the buttons. You can control ships with mouse or keypad, and a double-click will access almost anything in the game. Gone are the overly-complex right-click menus and 5-10 layer deep menus of MOO3.
2) The Music - Not overly complex or overdominating. It sets the mood and then stays out of the way.
3) The graphics - You can crank the resolution way up to 1600x1200 if you want to heat up your graphics card, but this is the rare game that looks almost exactly as good at 1024x768. You could have a four year old GeForce2 card and run the game as fast as someone with a brand new 7800. The main reason is that the game uses 3D when necessary to add depth, but otherwise relies on beautifully drawn 2D environments.
4) The mechanics of the gameplay - The game plays fast, but of course, being a turn-based game, you can move as fast or as slow as you like, which is why it is so elegant. A beginner can take his time and enjoy, but as a game goes on and you build a huge empire, you can fly through the screens to manage your empire. The ship design and combat system is truly fun, while maintaining its simplicity.
5) Many ways to win...really! - Most games like this are won through combat or combat+"some minor element that really doesn't matter". In my first game, I cranked up the difficulty and built myself a massive fleet and set out to conquer the universe. Then I noticed my enemies were not fighting each other as much and focusing on me. I had neglected the diplomacy, and I quickly lost the game via diplomacy. You really can win, and get beat, through diplomacy, economy, and many methods other than war. Very cool...
My hats off to the designers of this game. They definitely set out to make an homage to MOO2, and they've succeeded. This little indie publisher really showed up the big guys.
Who knows, maybe in a few years we'll be begging companies to make another GC2:DL!

Man, this game gets a lot of bad reviews that aren't deserved. The only bad thing is that the graphics aren't up to X-Box quality, but that's not a big deal. This game is awesome and I always have fun when I play it.

Star Wars Lethal Alliance Review

Star Wars Lethal Alliance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, let me state for the record that I'm a die hard Star Wars fan.
I've been collecting books, games, movies, memorobillia, and props related to the Star Wars license for the last 13 years or so.
In that time, I've seen some good Star Wars products, and I've seen some bad Star Wars products.
I'm sorry to say that this "game" may rank as the worst I've seen yet.
I've tried liking this game. I really have. All that it's managed to do so far is raise my blood pressure.
The controls are sluggish, the plot is incoherent, the voice acting is terrible (and sometimes voices overlap each other...poor timing?) and the frustration factor is enormous.
What's even more galling is that I think the story concept for the game is good. The idea of a rebel-alligned merc and her sidekick droid taking on the empire is an intriguing one.
Unfortunately, you don't get the joy of exploration, because almost ever level amounts to being on rails...it's very, very linear. (Kill all bad guys in this room, and now you can open THIS door). The camera is so buggy and difficult to control that you'll kill yourself as often as the enemies do...and this lack of good camera control often means that you'll have difficulty completing some puzzle-oriented objectives, because you have to stand in EXACTLY the right spot, looking in EXACTLY the right direction, to be able to hit the magic button that allows you to trigger a response you need...all while trying to avoid enemy fire and prevent your own character from auto-locking on other targets.
I can't help but feel that this game might have been a lot of fun if it had been an RPG instead of an action title...but it could've been a lot of fun as an actioner if the controls had been appropriately responsive.
As it stands, I'd have to advise anybody to spend your money elsewhere.

Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter Review

Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter
Average Reviews:

I never played the original Star Wars Starfighter so I cannot accurately compare the two games. I do know , however that Jedi Starfighter is a very good looking and fun game.
The graphics are the best thing that JS has going for it. There are over 40 ships from the relam of Star WARs (old and new). Their detail is great, and their flight patterns and movements are awesome. The coolest thing is the trailing afterburners of all the ships. Your ships lasers are very cool and they sound just like the lasers in Star Wars movies. The backgrounds are also very good pieces of artwork.
The story line in JS is set right after Phantom Menace but before the Attack of the Clones. Wlhat I really like about the story is that the writers did not try to make it like the movie, but instead set it in the world of George Lucas during a different time and place. This is smart! Movie plots are hardly ever accurately translated to game plots.
Another cool thing about JS is that you can play two players. There are five different modes for multiplayer, and get this you can play the regulary story based missions as a co-op two player journey awesome.
The story missions are the coolest to me, and you play as two different characters Adi Gallia(Jedi), and Nym who is a land owner fighting the seccessionist in Karthaak.
Like the first Starfighter, the game is not really a Star Wars game other than the flavor and the music. It is not like Rogue Squadron in that sense. But to me the controls and gameplay are better than in Rogue Squadron. You are not bound by a fake ceiling or bottom in mid-air. you have total 360 degree movemant in your planes. The weapons are ample and accrately done and Adi Gallia can perform force attacks from the cockpit.
Add to all of this the ability to unlock trailers and extra vehicles for multiplayer mode, and you have a very good game. I reccomend it to all Star Wars fans and to anyone who likes aerial shooters.
Graphics: 9
Storyline: 8
Control:8
Sound:9
fun factor: 9
replay value: 10
Overall score: 8.8 VERY GOOD

The galaxy is in turmoil as the events of Star Wars: Episode II rapidly approach. Mace Windu dispatches one of the Council's top Jedi, Adi Gallia, to investigate disturbances in the Karthakk system caused by a secessionist movement that threatens to expand. Using the Republic's new prototype Jedi starfighter, Gallia sets out on missions that lead to events depicted in the Star Wars: Episode II film. She quickly gains an upper hand in space battles using her Force powers, but will these be enough to counter the massive fleet of the evil Captain Toth and a mysterious figure that threatens the very foundations of the Galactic Republic system?
You'll fly the new Jedi starfighter and get a look at characters and events from the film. The game contains single- and dual-player action in more than 20 story-based missions. Fly all missions cooperatively with a friend or in single-player mode in a variety of spacecraft. Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter features more than 40 new craft, including massive capital ships, three new flyable fighters, new enemy craft, and more.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Mac) Review

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most advertised and well-reviewed video games of all time. Among it's myriad other achievements, it garnered 2003 Game of the Year from Computer Gaming World, PC Gamer, Amazon.com, and others (...).
Set an even longer time ago, none of the traditional Star Wars characters appear in this title. Starting this fresh new adventure is easy thanks to drag-and-drop installation from the now-standard Aspyr installation window. It's going to take time though - KotOR is Huge! It comes on a DVD instead of a regular compact disc and maxes that out at 4.27GB. So be sure to check your system against the requirements.
When you first start the game you'll have to wade through character creation before you see anything but a glimpse of the antagonist. But don't worry; once your character is created and you begin the epic, you'll be welcomed by the traditional Star Wars fanfare, though an original score will accompany the adventure. The game features new characters and places, but like the music, it is recognizably a part of the Lucas universe most of the time.
The game is, simply put, the first full-fledged Star Wars role-playing game for PCs and consoles. It is based on the newest Dungeons & Dragons rules - for better and worse. On the one hand, the rules of the most popular RPG ever are robust and well rounded. On the other hand, they show through the interface and are not a perfect marriage to the Star Wars universe.
The rules have been well adapted and fit skills such as repair and persuasion, feats such as blaster marksmanship and melee combat, and even force powers. By choosing from the limited character types you will find that most aspects of the Star Wars universe can be experienced through this game. Your decisions in the game even affect whether you lean toward the light or dark side of the force, eventually leading to a decision to work for good or evil. Along the way you can customize your abilities, skills, and even force powers.
But that is also where the complexities of the engine start to show through. Initial character creation and subsequent upgrades can take a lot of time for a gamer looking for a simpler RPG experience. To their credit, the developers do include a button that will automatically select recommended upgrades for your character to minimize the labor for such players.
Of course Star Wars is an action-filled franchise and so combat is one of the most important parts of the game. It is not handled as elegantly as some RPGs I have seen, but there are a lot of attack options. Each time you encounter an enemy the game will pause automatically and pop-ups will allow you to select a target and attack for your main character. When you resume, your attack will be carried out along with any other tasks you assign (such as using a medpack to recover health after a hit or a force power to disable your opponent).
Along with combat and several mini-games you will spend a lot of time with D&D staples. Exploring, trading, and conversing with non-player characters are all very important in this game. Unfortunately, your view of the beautiful sights is hindered because you cannot look up or down.
Interaction with other characters is handled better. Most of the dialog is actually recorded so you get to hear conversations instead of just reading them - that does a lot for the cinematic feel the game takes on when the rules aren't showing through. The choices you make in your conversations have an effect on the game too. That's important in an RPG and too rare in computer games.
I won't give away any of the plot, but it is worthy of it's inspiration. The game is beautiful and sounds great too, but it performs poorly on some systems. On my 1.2GHz iBook, I often found video jerky and movement controls intolerably erratic despite exceeding the requirements.
Despite such technicalities, Knights of the Old Republic is an awesome science-fantasy role-playing experience. If you are a Star Wars fan who enjoys the basic RPG dynamic, this game is going to be great for you! If you prefer fast-paced action and less administration in your game, buy Jedi Academy, also from Aspyr, instead.
