Command & Conquer: Generals Review

Command and Conquer: Generals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of the Command and Conquer series, so buying Generals didn't require any thought. We were rewarded with great graphics and amazing multiplayer gameplay.
First, the good. The graphics are quite impressive, definitely a step up from previous games. The various terrains - from snow to sand to grass to concrete - are well done. The trees sway in the wind. The units leave little tracks as they move, the construction of buildings makes you really feel like you're watching an army base get built.
The sound and music is well matched and makes the game feel realistic. Controls all work just the way you'd hope they would - after so many games they really have that down to a science.
On the down side, the usual problems in strategy gaming exist here. pathfinding isn't always perfect, units get stuck against buildings or in chasms. The campaign missions help you learn your skills but aren't extremely challenging.
Still, as with just about every game that comes out today, the built in gameplay is merely a training ground for the real challenge of multiplay. There's no way a computer could compete with the challenge posed by a real human being with experience and knowledge at the other end of the map. This game really shines in multiplayer. The three sets of units are well balanced, and if you get yourself onto a large map with teammates and opponents, you'll be hooked for months.
Skirmish mode is quite fun too, earning medals for different accomplishments.
Definitely a great game for any strategy gaming fan!

Sins of a Solar Empire Review

Sins of a Solar Empire
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an EXCELLENT game that takes the galaxy civilization games a clear step further. Open-ended like a new science-fiction world and played as a seat-of-your-pants RTS game, this is a very intelligent hybrid that I greatly enjoyed.
In effect, SINS is a successful blend of the wonderful GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS and HOMEWORLD series, with a sprinkling of TOTAL WAR for good measure. This is NOT a turn-based civilization game, so expect a much faster pace. What this means is that while it maintains the characteristics of classic turn-based civilization games (exploration, expansion, exploitation and extermination), by relieving from the micromanagement tedium, it allows for an intense RealTime Strategy experience. Now, this probably may not appeal to turn-based purists, but I would advise an open mind: this is a good game.
This concept-blending is new, so expect a slow learning curve - it took me a number of ...false-starts to get the hang of it: after all, it plays like an RTS and (although simplified) it still has enough of turn-based features that need to be taken care of. The interface is simplified and informative at the same time, with info trees sliding out only when needed.
There are three different factions to choose from (financiers, technologists and psitecs) - yet, their differences focus mainly on research tree-branching and ship designs. What I did not like was that the ships of all three factions are effectively the same and their differences are only skin-deep. What I would have liked to find (and was disappointed to the point of withholding the 5th star for fun) was ship design and building! Remember how much fun was to design our own spaceships (from freighters to battleships) in GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS II? Well, no such luck here. Let's hope they keep it in mind when the patch gets prepared.
Quick and constant exploration is not only encouraged by a necessity if one wants to survive - let alone win. Spaceships built within a solar system cannot travel beyond it, unless using "wormhole"-like singularities. This adds to realism but can stretch your finances to their breaking point - since only locally built ships can be used. Moreover, it makes really hard to locate the strategic points to either built defenses or focus an attack. The AI will constantly be bypassing your planning like the Maginot line - and leave you with such a French feeling...
The graphics (of all of backgrounds, planets and units) are very nicely done. I really liked the multiple afterburners tracing through space as a spaceship squadron was dopplering past my screen...And less-than-cutting-edge PC owners rejoice: even 4-5 years old systems can handle this game like a breeze!
What I truly appreciated was the realistic scale of things. Galaxies are much larger than star systems, which in turn are much larger than planets, which in turn are much larger than space stations...than spaceships and so on. How is this achieved? Excellent zooming!
SUPREME COMMANDER was the first game to introduce strategic zoom; however, SINS implements it much better and shows how it should had been done: from a galaxy to a single planet and to a single spaceship, zooming in or out firmly maintains the effectiveness of battle controls by grouping and simplifying the info-tiles as one zooms out. In SupCom, we had to chose between either discerning the units or moving ...info-tiles around the battlefield - not a bad first attempt, mind you. In SINS, one almost never looses perspective: ongoing battles, critical hotspots, or colony revolts are all easily identifiable in real-time.
On another note, SINS OF A SOLAR EMPIRE is a STARDOCK release which, yes, means their specialized installation utility. Nevertheless, this game hides no DRM or other intrusive security idiocy. Since trust and respect between a game publisher and its customers is a two-way street (and STARDOCK was willing to prove its friendship first), SINS deserves our support.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty Collector's Edition
Average Reviews:

The value for the extra 40 dollars is there, but do not buy used. I bought used from a company that had high ratings for customer satisfaction (Esource Parts) and still got screwed. The condition was reported to be "like new" and all the materials were still in their original plastic wrapping inside the box (the box had been opened however), except they had taken out the collector's edition version of the game and replaced it with the standard edition of the game (presumably to sell the thor pet). If a high rated company is reporting a used collector's edition to be "like new" and doing this kind of stuff with their product there's no reason to think that anyone else isn't.
So if you dont care about the few extra perks from having actual collector's edition version of game then you can pay as little at 90 dollars used, but if you want the real thing you're better off buying new box be sure you're not getting screwed.

Blitzkrieg 2 Review

Blitzkrieg 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As much as people complain about the influx of World War II computer games, let's face it-there aren't many such games outside of the Turn-Based Strategy genre. For every *Medal of Honor* one can find ten *Doom* knock offs, and for every *Sudden Strike* one can buy ten *Starcraft* retreads.
And for as long as Real Time Combat games have been around, Microsoft and developer CDV were the only WWII game-makers that I knew of until about 2003. CDV still makes some of the more realistic and yet fast-paced RTCs to ever model the Second World War, and their latest title *Blitzkrieg 2* is no exception.
I'm not sure then if it's ironic or just fitting that *B2* in many ways takes a step back towards the primitive *Sudden Strike*. Those used to the first *Blitzkrieg* will quickly discover they can no longer transfer veteran units from battle to battle. Nor can they cherry-pick specific units before each battle. Players cannot even fight random battles in order to rack up rank and win special units. Instead, like *SS*, the game follows a series of varied, compulsory missions where the player depends upon a small number of pre-stationed units as well as reinforcements. Most units are weak and the player can quickly lose a squad to a single well-placed gun or mortar. The player often cannot call upon air or artillery support to complete a mission.
As bad as that sounds, *B2* fortunately isn't nearly as aggravating as *SS*. The latter game suffered serious balance issues, with the player usually in range of accurate enemy artillery fire with no friendly aircraft or counter battery units available. *SS* also had a tendency to give the player the wrong units for the job, such as providing towed anti-tank guns in a mission that required tanks. Then there were the infamous problems with weapon ranges, sight ranges, and fog-of-war. I never did finish Sudden Strike.
Blitzkrieg 2 corrects much of these problems with more logical and consistently executed weapon ranges-though the computer can still use spotters to shoot you before you can even see it, players don't have to worry about their sniper being outranged by submachine gunners. It also seems, even more than the first Blitzkrieg, to balance the unit types for each mission so the player rarely has to worry about being stuck with towed AT guns when they really needed self-propelled howitzers. Though the player consistently remains outnumbered, he or she can actually use tactics to out-maneuver the enemy and hit them in the rear or flanks; not even *B1* let this happen, no thanks to extensive and well-prepared enemy fortifications in every map.
The real winner in this area lies in *B2's* superior map and mission design. Gone are the repetitive handful of mission types from the first title. Mostly gone are the blatant choke points and the field works hidden every five meters. Though none of the maps feel particularly large, the player rarely comes under attack the instant he or she leaves their starting position (or even in their starting positions like some *SS* levels I could mention). Lots of hidden paths and bunkers dot the beautifully rendered 3D maps. Though no day-night cycle exists, and the climate effects are limited to snowfall, maps detail all four seasons and both day and night missions. Here the player and the enemy alike have hills and valleys to contend with, and even the cheating enemy can blunder through a grove of trees and into one of my own well-placed guns. Instead of being punished for exploring by running into another damn defense line, the player can find bonus units being held prisoner or they can find secret objectives.
CDV took as it gave. To streamline play they eliminated logistics features like bridge-building and medical support for the infantry. The missions, meanwhile, no longer seem to score the player on various feats, such as tactics and casualties. Fewer missions exist as well: aside from the lack of random missions, CDV reduced campaigns from 6 chapters to 4. This results in tremendous gaps in the otherwise historical campaigns; for example, Germany spends the first three chapters between 1940 and 1942, then skips clear to December 1944 for the climatic chapter. And as already mentioned, players cannot maintain an elite core of units, or win new units through rank upgrade.
Instead, CDV vastly improved the old reinforcement idea, wrapping it up with the streamlined rank system and campaign design. Each campaign--Allied, German, or Soviet-divides into chapters; each chapter allots reinforcement credits, with a limited number of credits allowed per mission. The game separates reinforcements by military branches, such as Assault Infantry and Elite Infantry, or Light Tanks and Heavy Tanks. Such branches can be upgraded, say from Panzer II to Panzer III light tanks. Players can call these reinforcements into battle as long as they have control of at least one supply point on a map. But they must earn both branches and branch upgrades by completing missions; players start at the very bottom of the toy pile with conscripts and light tanks.
Players also can't expect to have every discovered branch available in every mission. Much of the difficulty and balance adjustments in this game comes from carefully limiting the type as well as the number of reinforcements. This also figures into the story telling, such as it is. Each mission within a campaign chapter follows a loosely connected story leading towards a historical battle; those missions usually earn the branches and unit upgrades needed to fight in the chapter climax.
Missions also earn experience for the player and his commanders. That's right, Blitzkrieg 2. includes type commanders for each branch of military unit. While rank will no longer let players win that fancy Pershing tank, it will allow him or her to assign a commander to a branch of his or her choice. As the commander gains rank, the units gain extra abilities, such as increased firepower or the ability to target the treads of a tank. Rank is achieved simply by blowing the hell out of as many enemies as one can find, since this sequel does not penalize the player for poor tactics or high friendly casualties.
So overall the sequel plays more like a conventional story-driven RTC, than the more flexible and open-ended original. The rank system amounts to a level treadmill since rank can be gotten naturally through the course of the story missions; I'd like to see a return to the graded system of the first game to make rank more challenging and thus rewarding.
I'd also like to see many more chapters added in order to provide a more comprehensive game experience. Transfering core units should return as well, but to supplement rather than replace the reinforcements. Finally, I feel the environment should render more realistically: if tanks can knock down trees then they should be able to ram houses. And vehicles should have a much harder time trying to get through thick trees and sand and mud, if for no other reason than it reminds me I'm playing a game when I watch a tank single-handedly bulldoze an entire forest.
Otherwise, I enjoy *Blitzkrieg 2* more than previous CDV efforts and I look forward to expansion packs. It just kind of annoys me that it steps back as much as forward.

WarCraft 2 Battle.net Edition Review

WarCraft 2 Battle.net Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Gamers, including myself, have marveled at the old game Warcraft II for a long time. When I heard that Blizzard Entertainment was developing a new version for that classic, I was overjoyed. The old Real-Time Strategy (RTS) has left its mark as the best Game of the Year 1995, Best Online Game, and Best Multiplayer Game. Although the gameplay graphics and cutscenes art are somewhat lacking, it has pretty good graphics, funny sounds, and appropriate background music. The game's online gameplay of this game is fantastic since it takes Blizzard's free online gaming server, Battle.net, and uses it in this classic's upgrade. Warcraft II Battle.net Edition's AI is much in need of improvement compared to the other new games, though. But this game was not supposed to be completely new, so Blizzard decided not to improve some of the features, but to fix old bugs, add small improvements, and add a super multiplayer option.
The story of Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition takes place after their first big hit, Warcraft I: Orcs and Humans. After the death of the Orcish Warchief Blackhand, Ogrim Doomhammer quickly took his place as the new Warchief. Meanwhile, the tattered humans from the destroyed land of Azeroth seek refuge in Lordaeron, the other power in the Alliance, a group of humans, elves, and dwarves allying up against the fearsome Orcs. The humans have won the second war against the Orcs and have destroyed their only way into human lands, the Dark Portal. As they find out, though, the rift allowing passage to their lands still exists. They Alliance must travel the rift to Orcish Lands to stop the Orcish threat.
When you first start out on a single-player campaign, if you choose one from the Tides of Darkness, then you'll start with a small amount of units and a basic building to start out on. This just teaches you how to build things and gives you a basic feel for how you play the game. Eventually, you'll move into much harder levels which involve keeping someone alive as you travel enemy territory, building up a strong enough force to overcome a powerful enemy, and developing strategy in order to outsmart your computer enemy.
The multiplayer features in this game are comparable to some of the top games out now. Popular online games, such as Starcraft and Diablo, use Blizzard's personal gaming server, Battle.net (the top online gaming service in the world), to make a very easy and powerful multiplayer option. There are also the basic multiplayer options such as connection over an AppleTalk or IPX networks. There are traditional modem games, which are only two player, and there is direct-connect (null modem). This game's multiplayer is also compatible with the old version of Warcraft II. You can select either the enhanced (which fixes bugs and adds Battle.net option) or you can choose normal (which is the only way you can play against other people with Warcraft II, but without Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition). This enhanced game has new features such as Shared Vision (the ability to see what your ally sees), there is the new food bar (which allows you to see how much food you have without selecting a farm), and there is fixed bugs and smaller new features that would take a while to list.
This game is a pretty basic RTS. Proportionally, the graphics are way off, but otherwise they are pretty good. For example, you walk a unit next to some trees or a building. From the sizes they use, you would only be able to fit about 16 units into the biggest building (the Town/Great Hall). Those must be very big units because the smallest unit is a peon and supposedly it takes up as much space as a catapult. The cutscenes in this game could be better, too. While they are much clearer and sharper then the original Warcraft, they still could be better.
The sound in this game is good, but not as good as I hoped. They have added a few new sounds that they had forgotten in the original, but those sounds go usually go unnoticed. While it's really funny to hear an Two-Headed Ogre burp really loud and then the two heads argue over who did it and to hear a Footman complain about what he's supposed to do, that's basically it in the sound department.
I highly recommend this game if you are/were a frequent Warcraft or Starcraft player.

Command and Conquer 3 Deluxe Edition

Well what can I say, this game is excellent. Like all of the Command and Conquer games, the campaign mode, for all three factions, is fun and addictive. The skirmish mode allows you to extend the life of the game beyond the campaigns, but if you are like myself, you will find yourself wanting to download more maps to make things more interesting. I was very impressed with the risk like, campaign map on the Kane's Wrath add on. The only downside I can think of for this game, is the difficulty in creating ones own maps and editing the game stats. The world builder program is difficult to use, compared to the map editors available for previous C&C titles. Overall the game play is excellent, the graphics are amazing and the campaign mode on it's own, with the all star cast, makes the game well worth the money.

After becoming an admitted and hopeless addict of StarCraft, I was thrilled to hear that the expansion pack was coming for Mac. And boy, oh boy was I excited when the package from Amazon was dropped into my quivering little hands by my friendly neighborhood postal worker. This game is exactly what you want if you're a StarCraft fan--more of the same. Though there are some interesting new plot twists, the story basically picks up where the original StarCraft story left off. But in addition to the continuing storyline, you also have some new units to experiment with, including the Terran Medic (finally!) and the Protoss Corsair. All in all this is quite a good value for your buck... the worst thing will be waiting for it to show up at your door!

This game is one of the best RTS games I've ever played. the Graphics may be a little outdated but the gameplay more than makes up for it. I don't know how many times I built up a fleet, hyperspaced my fleet to the enemy's doorstep when their fleet is attacking my ally, and wipe them out. The controls are quick to learn, and very intuitive. The sounds make me feel like I'm almost in the battle myself, and the music score is good, but not the best I've ever heard. Very good game. A great add on to what was already a solid space-strategy game. More research, a new race, a small add on to the economy (freighters). The voice overs still leave something to be desired, but otherwise the game's strengths lay in the battles and how you fight them. Just blast away or target a specific enemy component, it's up to you. I bought "Sins Solar Empire", truthfully I like "Sword" better, mostly because of it's game play.

American Civil War: Gettysburg Review

American Civil War: Gettysburg

Abysmal. You have to think that the reason the demo is limited to sixty minutes of play is a weak attempt to prevent potential customers from discovering just how poorly designed this thing (it doesn't deserve to be called a game) truly is. The units bear no relation to historical formations. Instead of the 1st Minnesota, 26th North Carolina or 6th Wisconsin you are presented with "unit of artillery" or "half unit of infantry." It would be difficult to imagine a worse game device for an historical simulation than allocating a budget of a set number of dollars, from which the player purchases the units to be involved in a given battle. Once purchased, the units are scattered, apparently at random, on a map loosely suggestive of the actual terrain. There does not appear to be any means to place units in any configuration suggestive of their actual historical positions. Gee, I dunno, I hate to tell game developers their business, but you think maybe it would be a desirable feature in a Gettysburg simulation to be able to position Colonel Chamberlain and the 20th Maine actually on a landscape suggesting Little Round Top? That's enough of your time and mine wasted on this piece of trash.

Real War Review

Real War

The bottom-line is Real War has a lot of potential, but it is in desperate need of a serious patching. The good news is that the developers have released an "initial patch", which means a follow-up is in the works. Some out-of-the-box issues were quickly apparent, one or two of which were rectified with the "initial patch", but there are quite a few which still remain.
Any RTS that permits your troops to stand, oblivious, to incoming enemy fire without reacting to defend themselves (or, at the very least *run away*) is in need of some serious AI attention. It is bad enough when your units don't respond to an adjacent unit being attacked, but when the unit *itself* doesn't move/shoot/duck/run/anything(!), and just stands there(!!) it is completely unacceptable. Six or seven years ago it could be forgiven, but gamers are much more savvy now and we've grown to expect a little more than that.
In my years of gaming I've heard about many accounts of games with crash-to-desktop errors, but I'd never once experienced it myself... until now. I've had several fatal errors while playing this game, seemingly during level loads, even after patching.
Which brings me to the save/load times: abysmal. There's really no reason why a gamer with a fast PIII, 256 Mb RAM, and a RAID should have to sit staring at a black screen just waiting to go from the gameplay map to the savegame menu. What exactly is it doing during all that time? Starcraft can save an 8-player LAN game in about three seconds, all without even leaving the gameplay map, so we know this is not an insurmountable problem.
On the upside, the game does look pretty good, but it seems a bit choppy, even when there's not a whole lot going on onscreen (and it's obvious that processor cycles are *not* being eaten up by efficient AI). The sound effects and radio chatter work well. R. Lee Ermey's voice-overs are gimmicky, but fun. Even the controls, while clunky at first, become pretty smooth once you get used to them, allowing you to manage an awful lot of units with only a few clicks. The map-zoom slider-bar is a great idea that I hope to see implemented in future games.
If Real War is the "game you've been waiting for" don't let these niggling issues scare you off. Out-of-the-box, it definitely has its issues, but the developers have been quick to move with a patch, and I'm fairly confident most of these other problems will be hammered out in the future. If you're an old codger like me, stingy with his gaming dollar, wait for another patch. However, it's still enjoyable, so if you're patient and forgiving about your software, don't be afraid to grab a copy.

Terrorist forces are threatening the free world, and the only power capable of stopping them is the U.S. military. The outcome is uncertain, but as history has shown, leadership matters. You control the balance of power. Choose your side, marshal your forces, and make real war upon your enemy.
Based on the official Joint Chiefs of Staff training game developed for the U.S. military, Real War uses real-world scenarios, allowing you to play as the current U.S. military or as a terrorist army extrapolated from actual terrorist forces.
Real War is a real-time strategy game in which you command today's armed forces. All jets, ships, and ground vehicles are taken directly from today's military. You can also get your hands on a few special items right off the Pentagon's drawing boards. Real War delivers a stunning one-two punch of 3-D vehicles--with their realistic movement--against the backdrop of a richly detailed 2-D world, with jungle, desert, and arctic environments.

This game is awsome. It's an RTS (Real Time Strategy), meaning that you gather resources, build a base, and raise an ever more powerfull army to destroy your opponent. It's a fast-paced, action-filled, stategic and fun game. The premise is that a group of humans have been stranded in some far corner of the galaxy already inhabited by the mighty Protoss, with the Zerg, classic science fiction hive-bugs, about to attack both. The story is superb, told in three chronological chapters depicting the war from the view of each race. It's full of twists and turns, and the missions scale up in difficulty very nicely.
The best part about Starcraft are the three races. Blizzard has achieved a perfect balnce between them but managed to also keep them utterly different. The Terrans are humans, with tanks, heavy machine guns, nukes and lumbering battlecruisers. The Zerg are a rampaging scourge of giant insects who can be produced quikly and in vast numbers to overwhelm opponents. The Protoss (my personal favorites) are mysterious psychics who use ultra-high tecnology as well as their awsome psionic abilities. Every unit is unique with strengths and weaknesses. For instance, take the first soldier available for each race. The Terran Marine can attack from a distance and stronger than the Zerg's counterpart, the Zergling, but the Zergling is faster and can be produced much faster than the Marine. The Protoss' Zealot is strong, fast, and packs a massive melee punch, but costs twice as much as a Marine and four times that of a Zealot. Every unit has a role throghout the game. Marines constitute a large part of my forces in a game from start to finish. Each race requires individual stratagies that take years (if ever!) to master. This is what makes Starcraft such a tremendous game, and while it will outlast 99% of other games.
The sound is excellent, and the dialogue varies between intreging (sp) and hilarious. The graphics, when they first were released, were the best I had ever seen. I've played this game for yearm and only now are they starting to look outdated, but they're four years old. Besides, if you have time to look at an RTS' graphics, then you're not playing the game! They function and arn't a distraction, which is all that matters in a stratagy game, IMHO.
The coup de gras is the entire interface, which has been plolished to perfection. The curser looks like something space-age, and the moving portraits of units and wire-frame images displaying area damage and hitpoints are just flat-out cool. So is the options menu, with an animated space battle for the single player icon... To select a campaighn you click on a moving avatar of the species in question, which displayes vital statistics of that said species... Little things like this are awsome. I could go on forever.
Multiplayer rules, and has been going strong for years now with no sighns of stopping. Unfortunatly, most of the people are playing maps with limitless resourses and where single-unit attacks actually work, but that's not the game's fault. If you can find a game where people arn't doing either of these, it's a blast. The campaighn editor is also very good, once you learn to use the triggers, which can take time. The cinematics are superb, some seeming as if they belong in a movie like Aliens and not a computer game. If you buy Starcraft, get it's expansion set, Brood War, aswell. It adds alot.
This game's woth it's weight in gold-plated latinum.

Be Careful, Amazon does not provide the CD-KEY when you purchase this game from them. If you have any experience with Star Craft then you know the game will not install with out the CD-KEY. The CD-KEY is found on the original case. Blizzard will get you another CD-KEY but only after you mail them the game as proof of owner ship. This is a huge pain and you should be aware of it.
