Viva Piñata (Platinum Family Hits) Review

Viva Piñata (Platinum Family Hits)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Viva Pinata you have inherited a garden in a fantasy world populated by living pinatas and an assortment of odd characters. Your mission is to build your garden to attract pinatas to live there. Everything you grow in your garden, including the pinatas, vegetables, flowers, and trees, can be sold for chocolate coins. You can use the coins to buy more seeds and grow more plants or to otherwise improve your garden. Viva Pinata is like a cross between Pokemon and The Sims and virtual pets, but I found that the result is greater than the sum of its parts!
This is a sandbox game of the best sort. You can make whatever decisions you want to and your garden can look however you want. You have the ability to dig ponds, grow grass, build houses for your pinatas, and all sorts of other activities that I am still discovering several hours into the experience. The decisions you make about how your garden develops will determine the kind of pinata who want to live there. The open-ended nature of the game is its best feature, and it really makes you feel like you are in control of the game's environment. The feeling of empowerment that kids receive playing Viva Pinata is enhanced by the excitement of constantly finding new things to do and play with.
I am impressed that a game that is so easy for kids to pick up is also so complex. My daughter is nine and was familiar with the controls and basic concepts within a half-hour. Yet the underlying concepts of the game are complicated. The skills I see her working on in this game primarily have to do with resource management, which as we adults know is critical for daily life. You have a limited amount of space for your garden (just like in real life), yet if you are not organized in your approach then the garden will quickly become a place of chaos. Kids will also learn the concepts of working to make money and how to budget for the next big item they need to improve their garden.
As other reviewers have stated, this looks like a game for kids, but it will suck an adult into its world just as easily. I couldn't wait for my kids to go to sleep the first night so I could start on my own garden. Time is greatly accelerated in the game, and the result is that you are very busy - you may suddenly look up from the game and see that a few hours have passed in the real world almost as quickly. The pinata are just the right amount of cute so that they are fun to watch, not annoying. There is no lull in the action for at least a few hours, at which time you may have been able to hire some helpers to take off some of the pressures of a big garden, such as watering and gathering your sellable items. This too is a good introduction to kids of the concept of people management. Lots of times you have to tell your helpers what to do, rather than just letting them do their own thing. Otherwise, their priority list is typically different from yours and those plants that you just planted may die because your helper was busy watering something less important.
Viva Pinata has way too much to offer to cover it all in such a short review. The environment is incredibly well done, from the sounds to the graphics. The game play is very addictive. Playing Viva Pinata actually got me excited to go out and do lawn work in the back yard! For parents wondering if this game is suitable for their kids, I will say that I am picky about what I let my kids watch and play and there is nothing here which offends me. There are all sorts of euphemisms around breeding pinatas (they call it "romancing") that sound very innocent but will make the adult chuckle. It is very tastefully done. And there is no doubt that your kids will be using their brains a lot more while playing this game than while playing the typical platform-style kids game. This is exactly the kind of game I was looking for to provide my kids with an enriching, non-violent video game experience. If Viva Pianta is an indication of the future of kids video games then the future is very promising.

Halo 3: The Official Strategy Guide (Prima Official Game Guides) Review

Halo 3: The Official Strategy Guide (Prima Official Game Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There isn't so much complexity, nor are there really a handful of secrets in Halo 3 which require you to actually use a guide. That shouldn't suggest a guide is bad, though. It's a great guide, just not one you'll find yourself in dire need of. However, for what you get you'll more than likely be pleased. It's a very well designed guide and is very well organized. There's a lot of content to swallow but at least the guide is organized and easy to use. Just don't be surprised if you spend a bit more time reading it instead of playing the game.
This guide actually begins with a foreward that explains what you'll find in the guide. Noting that it won't spend a lot of time on the basics and that they really did want to design a good guide. They succeed... almost too well because this is certainly an exhaustive guide. Don't let the size fool you, this is far more detailed than any guide I've ever seen.
Halo 3 doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel. In fact, it plays almost exactly like Halo 2 did. For that the basics section of this guide spends a little too much time reiterating what Halo fans already know. At least it doesn't spend too much time here and if you are new to Halo it'll get you acquainted with the game. In the basics it'll go over basic controls and how to control vehicles and such. Again, nothing veterans will need, but it is good for beginners to take a look here.
The Campaign is where this guide gets interesting. Many strategy guides out there simply focus on one difficulty level: Normal. That's not the case with Piggyback Interactive's guide. This walkthrough has been designed for all difficulty levels. The way they organized it is how it succeeds in doing this. Each section begins with a map. These maps are basically from a birds eye view of the level. They point out weapons, enemy packs etc. for you.
However, the layout is what's interesting. On the map they point out what you should do at each spot. It's brief and to the point. These call outs on the maps are for those going through Easy and Normal. On the facing page is where they give you a ton of detail for what to do on Legendary. Things to do on Legendary are also called out on the map but in the A, B, C format established in other guides. So if you see "A" on the map, look on the facing page at what to do. The walkthrough is designed to help with all the difficulty levels but written with the assumption that you'll be playing through Legendary. Needless to say you can easily use the Legendary tips for the lower difficult levels.
For the gamer who fears spoilers, the walkthrough in all its detailed glory is spoiler free. There's a lot of reading, but it makes sure not to tell you about the story. It also will debrief you after each chapter of the campaign.
The extras chapter is a different story. It doesn't spoil anything, but it is meant to be read only after you've completed the campaign. Here it'll tell you more about Legendary Mode and give you tips. It also talks about the skulls. However, Bungie would not let the authors of the guide reveal the location of the skulls. You know which mission it can be found in but not where in the mission. That doesn't stop them from revealing the effects of the skulls.
There's also a bestiary, info on vehicles and most useful of all, talking about the Score System and the list of achievements. For the score system they also provide great tips to reach the score needed to net yourself achievements.
There is then a huge section of the guide dedicated to multiplayer. Most of this is just showing you maps of the area and providing tips, but they talk briefly about co-op here and they also talk about all the different modes and all the weapons you can get as well. The last thing they mention here is about Forging. It's another section that is generally brief, only helping you to get the basic feel of it.
It's an exhaustive guide, but a good one. You might find yourself a little exhausted with information at times, but at least you know its all there.

This device works the same as all previous Xbox 360 controllers only with more attractive graphics on the front. Only die hard Halo fans need apply. What do you get for an extra $10? just the pretty looks and a little plastic army man (Okay, it is Spartan 117). I was disappointed that it did not come with the rechargeable battery for the extra money which is the reason for the lower review however, it is still a rock solid product and is recommended for the fanboy in us all.

Battlefield: Bad Company Review

Battlefield: Bad Company
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great game in its own right, with 24-player online matches, fully destructible environments, and a full range of land, sea, and air vehicles in very large maps. All of these things are very impressive for a console, but may be nothing too exciting for fans of the older Battlefield games on the PC.
It may take a little while just to get used to the game, but it can be a lot of fun once you get into it. The game overall isn't as clean or realistic as Call of Duty 4, but you really have to keep in mind that they're trying to bring a lot more to the table, whereas COD4 focused on perfecting a few key aspects of the gameplay. Those are two really different approaches to game development, and so it's really not fair to compare the two directly.
With that said, however, the controls and aiming don't feel nearly as sharp or responsive as they should, and this can get frustrating when you're trying to frantically maneuver your vehicle out of harm's way or land a shot on the guy in the tiny window across the village.
It'll be a little while before you pick up on the full range of things you can actually do in the game (tagging enemy vehicles with tracer rounds so that your buddy can lock onto it with a rocket launcher, for instance, or deploying smoke from your tank to cover your retreat). That's when things really get fun (and you stop dying as much). Online matches tend to descend into chaos rather quickly, but if you find some friends to play with and stick together, the cooperative aspects of the gameplay really shine through and can make for a very rewarding experience.
In conclusion, there are a few areas for improvement, but it's a very good multiplayer game in its own right, and it's definitely worth checking out (especially if you're new to the series).

Conflict: Vietnam Review

I like this game. It's my favorite of the Conflict series. The missions are hard ,with bullets flying by everywhere, and enemies coming from all sides at times.I'm playing it on normal setting and its hard. There's four settings easy, normal, hard, and extreme.I can only imagine how hard the extreme level is. I found that the best way to play this game is to use each one of your soldiers wisely. I always found ample supply of ammo, but you gotta be smart about this game, search everywhere to find all the extra med-pacs,ammo,weapons,grenades,etc.There's some serious firefights in this game. It beats all other versions of this series.ITS HARD!This game might be too hard for some players. Its the hardest conflict of the three games. The graphics are average, simular to SOCOM2 for PS2.They do seem to get better in the later levels. But I'm using an "S" cable,so thats why my graphics look better than the standard RCA plugs. There is a stealth aspect in some of the missions, but most of it is balls to wall bullets flying everywhere. This game very much depicts the frantic pace of the real vietnam war. With lush jungle environments, and enemies hiding in almost every corner. You can switch between each squad member and control there every movement, and you can switch between third & first person perspective by clicking right thumbstick. But First person perspective is kinda bad because the weapons aiming scope blocks almost the whole screen ,only the pistol, sniper & crossbow use just the crosshairs, all the other weapons literally take up the whole screen in first person mode.Almost all the weapons have a zoom option in first person, click the left analog stick. But I found that third person was best, except for sniper weapon,so you can see what the heck is going on. The levels are mostly linear ,but there's usually two routes you can take, like a fork in the road. This game definatley requires you to use your head .Watchout for booby traps ,Running and gunning will get you killed almost always, but sometimes you gotta run .The first mission is just walking around talking to people, but that soon ends as the bullets start flying by.If your having trouble beating this game here's the code for ALL CHEATS: At "Main Menu" Press,RT-RT-LT-LT-B-B-Y-Y-X-X-White Button. Then a Cheats option will open in menu.It gives you INF AMMO ,INF SAVES,ALL LEVELS,ALL MOVIES. Then after starting or loading a saved game while playing pause to menu go to OPTIONS the you'll see CHEATS to turn on INF AMMO,INF SAVES.It took me a few tries to get the cheat to work ,but it does work ,just keep trying.I'd turn off my xbox to reset ,it seemed to do the trick.RT= Right trigger,LT= Left Trigger.I Played this game again on the EXTREME level ,just because I like a challenge.Plus with the "infinate" saves cheat ,that made it more fun.

Medal of Honor Airborne Review

Medal of Honor Airborne

I know a lot of gamers are getting tired of the same old and oft-repeated WW2 shooters. But the criticisms I've heard about this game hardly seem justified. The graphics are crisp with good frame rates and smooth play. The AI soldiers seem to react in a far more efficient and realistic manner. Also there are some great new wrinkles.
Two new features I love are the character and weapon development. The idea of incorporating character skill development into a WW2 shooter is fantastic, and while things like weapon upgrades aren't--of course--very realistic, they add an enjoyable new dimension to the gameplay. Also, parachuting into combat is really cool.
So far, I've found the control layout to be smooth and efficient--not always a given with this series. Another plus is the far less linear nature of the missions and combat. Instead of simply moving from point A to B and so on, you're generally just given a set of mission objectives and then left to work them out on your own--with far more opportunity for using terrain and flanking options to achieve success.
All in all, a very satisfying purchase and the first true next-gen WW2 shooter.

Star Wars Jedi Hunter Controller Review

Star Wars Jedi Hunter Controller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I admit it. I'm a STAR WARS geek. And I'm proud of it. So naturally, given the opportunity to spend money on a controller that's got a special button that's marginally useful in only one game, I picked it up. And you know, I don't care. It's a fine little controller. Dumb, kinda, because, really, the XBOX controller that comes with the unit is, on balance, better, but it doesn't have these nifty Darth Vader side grips.
Why is what's "free" better than this add on? Well, the Jedi Hunter is maybe 30% smaller than the now-standard "mini" XBOX controller. It therefore takes some getting used to. But this isn't all negative. To be honest, I'm increasingly liking the smaller version. Maybe because I'm using the wireless version, there's something kinda cool about having a controller that can be so easily stowed away. My growing love of this smaller size extends only so far, however. The joystick buttons just feel a little too flimsy sometimes in games that really make use of them. Ironically REVENGE OF THE SITH, the game for which the controller is made, is one such game. And, dangit, it's sometimes quite a chore to execute a move that requires pressing on the thumbstick button in the middle of a larger button sequence. I don't know why, exactly, but they don't have that same reliable "click" of the standard controller. I've actually found myself going back to the standard controller while playing REVENGE and then using the Jedi Hunter for most other games.
Otherwise, though, Intec has wisely chosen not to alter the position of the buttons, as was common to the first generation of 3d party controllers. So at least you're not fighting against instinct when trying to get used to this new controller. They may be smaller buttons, but at least they're in the "right" place.
On balance, then, it's nothing revolutionary. Most people probably don't even know this controller exists, and there's nothing about the design that screams "BUY ME NOW!" But it is a competent controller, at a completely reasonable price. Because both the wired and wireless versions of the Jedi Hunter (as opposed to the Jedi/Sith 2-pack) are black, the casual observer would be hard-pressed to notice the Vader markings on it. It's a very low-key STAR WARS design that probably only the user would appreciate. It would make, I think, a nice stocking stuffer for the STAR WARS-lovin', XBOX-playin' members of your household. Especially those who want to keep their love of STAR WARS as secret as the Sith.

I'll keep this simple; I'm 26, a hardcore gamer and this is the first game in a long time to really put a smile on my face when I play it. The game is very deep and while it does have some very minor issues with the camera, it's all forgotten once you imerse your self in its 'lego land' of puzzles and cartoon humor. An absolute must play for any gamer, any age. One thing of note is that the game contains evry musical score from every Indiana movie - simply fantastic.

LEGO Batman Review

LEGO Batman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you liked LEGO Star Wars and LEGO INDY, then LEGO BATMAN is already in your Xbox....'nuff said. If you didn't like them...you won't like BATMAN...if you didn't try them, you should.
The LEGO games are fun for the whole family, young and old, the animated LEGO movie links to the gaming threads are wild & wicked and worth the purchase on their merits alone. The format for Batman is much like the Lucasfilm game sets, just not directly connected to any particular movies...although (thankfully) the Danny Elfman music (circa 1989) runs throughout the game, the style is generic Batman via LEGO LAND. The villains have teamed up to escape Arkham Asylum and the Dynamic Duo must stop them...each villain has a story arc to unlock, before free play is possible in the related locations...so like the previous installments, replay value is high, you can return to the story setting later as several optional characters including the villians themselves in order to find hidden "trophies" to build in Wayne Manor (part of the Batcave hub, where menus, story progress and unlockables lie). This way the same tales have many variations for players to explore, collecting the coin-like "studs" as currency for upgrades and unlockables. There's roughly about 30 separate levels to play, 15 in the hero chapters and 15 levels i the villain chapters.
LEGO BATMAN characters have individual moves, Batman for example can put baddies in a choke hold and throw them. An exciting addition to LEGO combat is the BATARANG, which will lock on targets for distance attacks. Introduced also, are special suits for Batman and Robin, these make certain combinations of characters a necessity for passing stages or solving puzzles...For example, in true comic book fashion,Robin can get a Magnetized-suit to scale metal walls, I can't explain the pleasure that came from watching Robin lumbering and buzzing up surfaces (sound fx here are classic) Other moves are standard for the LEGO games: grappling hooks for platforms and punching and kicking.
The character design is great and Gotham looks good...there are lest characters to be unlocked here than in any other LEGO game so far and lest upgrades as well. But as for the characters there are so good choices from the Batman Universe....Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, Poison IVY, Mr. Freeze, Riddler, Killer Croc, Scarecrow, The Mad Hatter, even Bane.Like the heroes, each villain has their own special weapons and moves...I bet you can guess Banes.
Another LEGO staple is the mix and match at the hub, where you can customize a character for free play by swapping the pieces around.
No major complaints, it just seems smaller than previous efforts, maybe because no direct movie-tie-in was done...like the Trilogy format.
I do miss the "character quirks" introduced for LEGO INDY, like the fear of snakes and rats, effecting character behavior. Admittedly it doesn't work well with the superhero genre. Also, since this is a Traveler's Tales project with Warner Bros. and not Lucasfilm, don't expect to find any hidden Star Wars characters this time....sorry.

I got these two games as a package deal with my 360 Elite. I didn't expect much out of them. I was really surprised that Kung Fu Panda was as good as it is. It has a wonderful art style, everything is colorful and vibrant. You would expect this, for it to look like the movie (which I didn't see). What I did not expect was how fun the game was to pick up and play. I didn't play it much since I gave it to my nephew but anyone around 10 years old and up should enjoy this game. I think most people have played a Lego game by now so I won't include a review of that.

Lego Indiana Jones 2. The Adventure Continues Review

Lego Indiana Jones 2. The Adventure Continues
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a big fan of all the Lego games, so my son & I were excited to pick up this one when it first came out. After playing it to about 85% completion, I have to say that overall this one is a pretty big letdown.
The format of the previous games has been pretty much the same - there's an overall hub that serves as the central area for the game. From there, levels are grouped together by story (about 5-6 levels for each movie/storyline). Each level contains a variety of hidden areas and secrets that can be accessed as the player opens new characters in the game, adding to the level's replay value.
That philosophy seems to have been rethought for this game, and not for the better. Instead of one hub, there are 6 - one for each of the 1st three movies, and three for Crystal Skull. The hub is a giant area where you can locate new characters and vehicles, and access the story and bonus levels. The hubs are fairly involved, and are set up the same way the levels were in the previous games (obtaining a new character lets you use their new ability to access a new part of the hub). The hubs are pretty well designed. My one complaint is that almost every new character remains in the area where you first purchased them, so remembering where to find the one you need can be difficult. Also, some of them are in very far-flung locations, so it can literally take about 5 minutes of just walking/driving the entire way across the hub to find the character with a wrench (for example), and then going all the way back across the hub to the entrance of the level that you need him for. I don't know who came up with that, but it's a TERRIBLE idea and a boring chore.
The levels themselves have been simplified WAY down. There are no secrets, there are no hidden areas, there is no reason to play any of them through more than once. Only the most rudimentary thought seems to have gone into each one. Gameplay is still the same as it ever was, and it's enjoyable, but the level design leaves a LOT to be desired. Generally, an entire bonus level will consist of one puzzle - for example, use the shovel to dig up a spear, throw the spear into the hole and use it to climb up to a ledge. Hit a switch with the whip and you're done!
The story levels too are much shorter than the levels in previous games. As an example, anyone who has played the first Lego Indiana Jones game will probably remember the mountain level from Raiders of the Lost Ark. That level begins in Marion's bar where you have to defeat a boss while the bar burns down, then moves into the mountain passes, then to a mountain temple, and finally to an army outpost. The equivalent level in this newest installment has players beating a boss in Marion's bar and THAT'S IT! That is the whole level. Each story level can be completed in roughly 5 minutes, and has no replay value at all - no secret areas to discover or any reason to come back to it again.
My final issue with this game is that it freezes on a fairly consistent basis - we've had it lock up about 15 times now, in all different areas, though the Raiders hub tends to get it the most. From poking around on forums, this seems to be a fairly common complaint.
If you're a fan of the Lego games, it's worth playing this one - it's still fun, even if it is a bit lacking in comparison to previous ones. However, I am keeping my fingers crossed that they do not retain this format for the Lego Harry Potter game coming out next year.

This game is great: easy to pick up and learn; fun game control; good gameplay; solid graphics; just enough story line to add some depth to the gameplay; overall, an excellent game. Although the graphics are not exceptional (honestly, they could use a little work), I have to admit that this is a super-fun game to play that mixes just the right amount of challenge and reward to keep you hooked on "defending the galaxy...". This is a keeper, and definitely a better alternative to other vehicular combat games ... Get this game, you won't be sorry.

The force is truly with Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter. Thisfirst-person space shooter will appeal to fans of the genre, and will especiallyexcite any Star Wars buffs: there's a lot of material in this game thatcovers the period between Episode I and Episode II.
The time prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode II is a chaotic one.Pressure between the Republic and Count Dooku is building, and the Count has aplan that will give him the upper hand. He's made a deal with Captain Toth ofthe Trade Federation, who intends to take over the resource-abundant Karthakksystem. He has met almost no resistance, except for the alien smuggler Nym.
Aware that the Karthakk system must not fall into Dooku's hands, Mace Windudispatches his former student Adi Gallia (now a Jedi Master) to the system in anexperimental force-powered starfighter. She joins forces with Nym, and togetherthey just might have a chance at stopping Captain Toth.
Jedi Starfighter has 15 story-driven levels and an in-depth tutorial. Inall, the game provides over 20 missions, mostly protecting or escorting targetsand blowing up droids and other minions of the future Empire. The action takesplace in space, as well as in the sky over various planets. You can play aseither Adi or Nym, and you can also play the entire game in two-player split-screen cooperative mode. The Xbox version has an exclusive head-to-head scenariocalled Coruscant Territory Capture--think Star Wars meets Capture theFlag.
The two main ships you fly are Adi's Jedi starfighter (the same ship piloted byObi Wan in Star Wars: Episode II, Attack of the Clones) and Nym's strikebomber. Adi's ship is fast and light with four force powers (force field, forcelightening, force reflex, and force shock wav

Star Wars Obi-Wan Review

I highly recommend this title, 4 stars cause well, there aren't many games that deserve 5 yet.. HALO maybe.
Hearing some of the other reviews on this site, I hesitated to purchase Obi-Wan, as I bought some other underwhelming Xbox games (Air Force Delta Storm, Fusion Friendly), and I didn't want to waste another $50 just cause I'm curious. Obi-Wan is FUN - I played it for 10 hours straight when I brought it home, which was tonight.
Graphics: really good, not amazing, but very tight.
Gameplay: Awesome. Swinging the lightsaber, force pulls (weapons), spins and flips - jeeze, it just feels cool to be obi-wan. The moves are somewhat simple, but perfecting the use of them takes hours of work, and I still feel as if I'm young Obi-Wan, in training.
Sound: Music is great, sound makes you think you're a jedi.

Cons: They didn't use the controller vibration all that much, and the levels take a while to load. The game hangs here and there, for no apparent reason, like when you turn off your lightsaber.
Should you buy it? If you liked Halo, or Star Wars, or adventure/action games you'll probably like this game. Buy Halo first though :)
More when I finish the game - happy holidays!

Please guys you all need to actually play the game through before you review. You must look at all aspects of this solid fighter. This is game is great with stunning graphics and great gameplay and in depth missions. The added two player is also great (with many modes of play). This is a true XBOX game and should/will be a flagship game. So if you want a XBOX but can't decide on a game to go with it go with this or DOA3.

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast Review

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

I love STAR WARS games and couldn't wait for this one. It's a cool game but not without some drawbacks.
NOTE: The game starts off as an FPS. Not until around the 7th level do you get the lightsaber and the Force. When you ignite the saber, you go into 3rd person mode.
DIFFICULTY: I'm starting with this, because this stands out the most. This game is TOUGH! I defy anyone to play through this game without consulting someone for help. I knew I was in trouble when I got stuck on the first stage! And I played the original DARK FORCES. JEDI OUTCAST consists of complicated map areas, hard puzzles, things you might not think to do, and enemies that can drain your energy quickly.
GRAPHICS: I thought they were quite good. Familiar planets is a nice touch. Has a realistic SW feel. The frame-rate is good.
SOUND: A little disappointing, particularly with regard to the lightsaber sound effect. It doesn't have half the punch that it did in OBI-WAN. The music editing is very choppy and is not done very well. Blasters sound good.
CONTROL: The default control is awful, but you can customize it to make it a lot better. Using R for the saber leads to not quite as precise lightsaber movements, but you can get used to that. You can deflect blasts with the lightsaber (and it looks awesome) but they never go back and hit the enemy! The Force is awkward to use.
MULTIPLAYER: Lots of cool places to fight (Death Star, Bespin, etc.) and you can even be a stormtrooper and have a lightsaber!
If Lucasarts took the difficulty, Force usability, lightsaber controls, sound effects, and enjoyability of OBI-WAN, with the graphics and animation of JEDI OUTCAST, we'd get one truly amazing XBOX game.
I have to say this one more time: This is game is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! It takes the fun out of it since it is so frustrating. Still, it's worth checking out.
