It's February 2015 and with the War on Terrorism over, the terrorists have joined forces with South American druglords to strike a blow at the US. The only thing between them and us is a single pilot - you. Nearly six months after release, JF 2015 still offers a bit of arcade fun for people who want to spend a few minutes just blowing up anything they can get their sites on. Yet a few minutes at a time is all I would recommend given the repetitive nature of the game.
JF is not for the flight-sim enthusiast. It is purely an arcade shoot. Flight controls are governed by your basic WASD layout and the mouse is used to move the aiming reticule and flying your aircraft in a standard point-and-follow interface. I have to commend Global Star by their decision to completely remove any attempt towards adding realism to the flight engine. You can't stall, you always try to level with the ground, and when all else fails, you can instantaneously switch into hover-mode for a quick stop. This decision to do so much of the flying for you is a nice touch when you are locked with a keyboard and mouse interface.
The enemies in JF come at you in standard lemming fashion. There are just hordes and hordes of them; from air, ground, to naval combatants, and they all exhibit similar flight characteristics. Your primary enemies in the air are drones, helicopters, and enemy jets; when it comes to combat, they're really hard to differentiate between - the only real difference being the amount of damage it takes to take them down. Ground units will present your greatest challenge, but again, they don't exhibit any intelligent behavior. JF is primarily a turkey shoot, if you come at it expecting anything more you're going to be sorely disappointed.
JF's graphics aren't all the bad, especially if you're able to crank up all the settings, they have implemented some pretty impressive heat effects and your ships are pretty well rendered. The arcade nature of this game really begs it be played in 3rd person and your ship's animations will not disappoint. Enemy ships are adequately rendered, but you will rarely ever see them. The scope in this game is a bit off - something at 100m looks more like it's at 500m. Everything is small, but your HUD finds everything for you. Unfortunately, the HUD is this game's graphical disappointment. The problem lies not in it's organization, but in its color choice. Your HUD markers are all a light green, and when placed against the sky or water backdrops, they are nearly impossible to see. There is no option to change the color and you tend to find yourself aligning yourself to face the ground just so you can see where your incoming bogies are coming from.
There is a multiplayer mode - up to 8 players, but unfortunately I was unable to try it out. None of my friends had a copy of this game and the internet lobbies were completely empty every time I checked.
All in all, the game is amusing - it's very short - 16 levels spread over 4 maps, and all the levels are pretty much the same, total playtime is something near 5 hours start-to-finish. There are a few oddballs here and there, but the game was not really designed for marathon play. JF 2015 is one of those games that you can play for a couple minutes here and there to shake things up. It's not the best of the arcade flight shooters out there, but it's definitely not the worst. If you can still find yourself a copy, it's worth giving a try.

Logitech Attack 3 Joystick Review

I needed a joystick, nothing fancy just something simple. I bought one that was a little too simple for about $16. I needed ANOTHER one. I found this Logitech Attack 3 one, for also $16. The caliber of the LA3 in quality and use is amazing. This joystick is fantastic. The stick itself is spring loaded but feels like it's gliding. The buttons and trigger are all on hair touches making for easy presses. And the throttle is a gliding scroll button that's very smooth and never leaves where you put it. One hand works the stick while the other works the bottom buttons and throttle. If you need a joy stick for some simple flying and dog fighting, (i.e. Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed) then the Logitech Attack 3 is perfect for you. Low price that delivers way more than it should. If you're a "sim" kind of guy then no, don't get this because it's not a sim stick, it's a joy stick, and it will bring you joy.

Star Wars, Episode 1: Racer Review

(This review applies to the Macintosh version of Star Wars Racer). A fun, exceptionally fast-paced game that brings racing to the Star Wars video game universe (and more multimillions to George Lucas's coffers). But before you buy, check the system requirements carefully: while this runs fine on my brand-new iMac, I'm hearing that many older Macs aren't supported for this fast-running program. The key to watch out for in the system requirements seems to be "3-D hardware support (OpenGL compatible); iMac and newer machines require no extra hardware" (according to the system requirements on Amazon's page). That's why I give it 3 stars...the game itself would be worth five stars but it loses a couple for being persnickity and only running on Macs that were seemingly introduced last week. While I applaud LucasArts for pushing the envelope in creating the game, owners of older hardware should have a chance to run it too, and not at speeds of Jabba the Hutt.

Battlestar Galactica Review

Battlestar Galactica

Wow. I honestly cannot believe how many people are complaining about this game's difficulty. Granted, I am a seasoned veteran of flight sims, but my brother-in-law is a casual gamer and he beat the first mission on his first try. That, however, is beside the point, because if you're unfamiliar with modern flight sims in the first place, then you have no business reviewing this game. You should have sampled at least one other flight sim in the past, like Ace Combat 04, and should not have bought it based solely on your love of the show.
I'm not kidding, people. In comparison with Star Trek: Invasion and Colony Wars: Vengeance, Battlestar Galactica is a cakewalk. Take, for example, the secondary weapon system. You have a constantly replenishing supply of torpedoes and can lock on to multiple targets at once. What's more, when you gain bonus points, you earn even more torpedoes that can be fired simultaneously and can raise their agility, speed, or power, though they RARELY miss and are powerful enough (even in the first mission) to destroy a Cylon raider. Additionally, your shields recharge automatically, the Cylons are very poor marksmen, and outrunning enemy torpedoes is absolutely NO challenge.
To those who don't like the absence of difficulty settings and training missions, I suppose that's understandable. However, complaints about there not being cheat options are ridiculous. Like I said, you should have been prepared for a challenge, not a chance to tactlessly destroy everything in sight. The manual IS helpful; you just need to read it more carefully. As for saving, try exploring the menu a little. If you still can't figure it out, a prompt will appear after completing a mission. (Note: The first mission involves both defending the Galactica AND assaulting the asteroid.)
That said, veterans of the Ace Combat and Colony Wars sagas (like myself) will undoubtedly find Battlestar Galactica easier, but also very enjoyable. Missions can be replayed as well as cinematics, which are gorgeous. Graphics, sound effects, and explosions are top-notch. This is an all-around great game for those who know what to expect.

Star Wars: X-Wing (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars: X-Wing (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This isn't the original X-wing, the famous space-combat flight sim that wiped the "Wing Commander" series off the map. The original game was based on early 1990's graphics (3d accelerator support?) and ran on 486 computers (huh?!?), the collector's edition is beefed up to exploit Pentium horsepower and 3Dfx and other hardware acceleration support. Although the missions are unchanged from the original edition, the graphics are actually closer to the latter "X-wing v. Tie-Fighter" (AKA "XvT") game. If you've got the original, you're probably better off getting XvT, which now comes in a jewel case that includes the "Balance of Power" single-play expansion pack, or the "Tie Fighter" collector's edition. Any one of these titles are available for under $..., and may have coupons for a free extra title.
The Game: you are a rookie pilot for the fledgling rebellion hoping to restore peace and freedom to the galaxy. In a series of elaborate missions, you fly across space in your starfighter against the hordes of the Empire. Missions are scripted (you can't go to the next mission until you complete the last one), but are generally arranged in arcs (you hijack an imperial freighter full of R2 units the Rebellion needs to navigate its ships. In a follow-up mission, we find that the Empire allowed the R2 units to fall into enemy hands and programmed them to bring their ships - rebel pilot and all - into the Empire's hands. Guess who is tasked for rescuing the rogue ships?). Your ship may be the super-fast and maneuverable A-Wing; the heavily armed and armored Y-Wing (boy those things can take a punishment); or the X-Wing, a sort of workhorse that is halfway between the other two in terms of weaponry, speed and protection (in "Tie Fighter", the X-Wing was probably the easiest target). Your missions vary between offensive (take out an Imperial convoy) or defensive (fly support for a rescue mission delivering wounded rebels), but can be expected to have elaborate mission-goals (e.g. - when defending the rebellion's medical frigate against waves of Tie Bombers, try taking the fight closer to the bombers' own mothership; when attacking an Imperial formation, you'll need to protect your wingmen since your own ship won't have enough firepower to destroy the Empire's ships alone.) The flight physics are pretty rudimentary (you can't really push realism for a game like this) and the systems are also pretty simple (systems repair themselves when possible; targeting is confined to cycling between targets; there are several weapons which are either aimed or self-guided;) Strangely, as with the original, there is no pad-lock option ("Falcon3" is now what, nearly 10 years old) to follow targets around, giving the game a flat perspective that all the 3d hardware support can't fix. The graphcis and sound are beefed up for the missions only, keeping the cutscenes anchored firmly in pre-Pentium territory (although that's a minor problem, preferable to the converse situation, and one that actually serves to highlight the improvements of this edition. I ran the game on a P-166MMX without hardware accelartion and enjoyed smooth gameplay. I've since upgraded to a voodoo2 card, but it's been so long since I played the original, I can't remember what I've missed.

My kids LOVED IT from the moment it arrived in the mail. And speaking of delivery, it was here in 3 days! How's that for customer service. My sons are 14 and 11 and they both like it alot, however my 14 year old plays it the most. They're addicted to the Star Wars adventures whether it be movies, books or computer games. You can't go wrong with this one (and the price is right, too). You feel like you're actually sitting in the cockpit with the pilot. It's definitely a favorite of theirs. Order it, order it, order it!

Star Wars Racer Revenge Review

Star Wars Racer Revenge

This is an incredible game. I just bought it the other day and I love it. But I'm still not finished. Sure, I've beaten a few tourniments, but there is more.

See, the reason I'm writing this is because I've been reading a lot of reviews saying that it's just too easy. What they fail to mention is that even though Tournament mode is very very short, you have to play it with all your racers in order to make everything equal. In addition, there are secret characters that are unbelieveably hard to get. These are:

Episode 1 Sebulba: Win first place in all races on regular Sebulba's career.

Episode 1 Anakin: Beat the best lap time for each race (it seems easy at first, but those last two races make it almost impossible).

Watto: Beat the best 3-lap race time for each track (see above parentathis).

Darth Maul: Beat the best KO number in each race (oddly enough, it's the first race of the game that gives me the most trouble)

Darth Vader: Unlock EP1 Anakin, Watto, and Maul, then (and only then) win the tourniment with one of those three.

How difficult are these characters to get? Well, let me put it this way: I've been playing almost nonstop for a week and the only onje of the above characters I have is EP1 Sebulba (though I'm close to getting Maul).

So if you want praise for this incredible game, read some of the other reviews. However, read this one after to dispell the "too easy" myth. Sure, winning the tourniment mode with one character is wicked easy (I did it in a matter of hours). But try winning it with 18 and unlocking 5 more.

Dos neek ta tunk bantha poodoo.

It's been eight years since Sebulba was defeated by young Anakin Skywalker, but Sebulba's thirst for revenge has only grown stronger. Star Wars: Racer Revenge brings newer, faster, and even more dangerous Podracing to the galaxy, taking you on a one-way ride to ultimate victory. Jockey for position with a tangle of opponents, or leave the pack behind at intense, nerve-jangling, planet-scorching simulated speeds of up to 600 mph.

Star Wars: Starfighter Review

Star Wars: Starfighter

First let me say that I love Star Wars. That's anything about Star Wars; I have seen all six movies (I'm sure some of you have too) and have played all the games that have come out with the name Star Wars on it. With that aside let me just say that this was probably the best Star Wars game to come out since Tie fighter, the only exception being Jedi Power Battles, which was fun, but not in the same way. Star Wars Starfighter is a space combat game that uses a flight sim control style that falls just short of the realism provided by Tie fighter, but what was lost in the realism was gained in the terrific graphics. I was completely blown away by the canyon runs and full-scale space battles. The movies themselves did not contain such spectacularly large and complex space fight scenes. I became dizzy at some points and just had to pause the game to try and get my bearings again. Truly a marvelous piece of programming.
My only complaints about this game come from features that existed in other games provided by Lucas arts that were missing from this one. The most notable is the non-existent map. Perhaps I couldn't find it but in either case there was no map and without one the complicated space battles turned into allot of spinning over and over again looking for the place I'm supposed to go. The next problem is the limited control over the armament and selection of ships. In most other space combat games by Lucas Arts you are able to select what ship you wish to fly and what armament you want on your ship. Additionally during combat switching between shields, weapons, engines and the like all added that much more fun to the game. This one on the other hand functioned like an arcade game and did not provide such complications, which could be good for some players.
For those of you that loved tie fighter and x-wing then you will appreciate the advancements that have been made with Starfighter. Increasing the difficulty level until your ship turns into stardust on the first training mission makes up for its rather short playtime. So go out rent it, buy it, borrow it from a friend, but by all means play it.

Star Wars Starfighter is finally here, and, as expected,it serves up Wookiee-sized portions of action and adventure. Flyingfrom either a first- or third-person perspective, players must fighttheir way through 14 sprawling missions that weave together the livesof three seemingly unrelated pilots. Set during the same time period asStar Wars: Episode I, the events in Starfighter parallelthose of the movie, letting players participate in the conflict againstthe Trade Federation from a slightly skewed perspective.
Although the main missions can be completed in an afternoon, it cantake weeks to earn the bronze, silver, and gold medals that unlock thegame's bonuses. These include extra missions, a few two-player modes, and the ability to choose any ship for each mission (including DarthMaul's incredibly powerful Infiltrator).
Most of the missions are intense, involving efforts like racing throughan enemy-infested canyon or defending a base against a ceaselessprocession of droid air and ground forces. The game engine can throw anoverwhelming number of 3-D objects on the sc at once--such as amission where more than 50 hostile fighters swarm nearly a dozen largecapital ships. The beauty of these large battles is mesmerizing, withlasers crisscrossing, massive explosions thundering all around, andconstant radio chatter alerting players to new threats.
The controls for the various fighters and bombers are extremely basic, and combat is straightforward, but there is always so much going on atonce that the game mechanics almost need to be simple. The only realdrawbacks to the game are a few bugs that occasionally crop up andprevent us from completing missions, and the fact that planetarymissions have a low "ceiling" that prevents us from climbing very high.Even with these faults, the game exceeded our expectations, and no
