The DVD case for The Mysterians aka Chikyu Boeigun (1959) - the IMDb lists a release year of 1957 (12/28/57, to be exact), so maybe 1959 was the year it made it to the U.S. - states `The Greatest science fiction picture ever conceived by the mind of man.' That's seems like a pretty haughty claim, especially for a film made by a studio (Toho) most famous for movies featuring guys in rubber suits crushing miniature buildings...and after watching the film last night, I feel it didn't quite live up to said claim, but still, it was fun nonetheless (besides, would your interest be peaked in a film that claimed something like `Not the greatest science fiction film in the world, but it will do in a pinch'? Probably not...)...directed by legendary Japanese director and Academy Award winner IshirĂ´ Honda, the creator of Godzilla, The Mysterians was Toho Studios 1st wide screen sci-fi color release (Rodan was the 1st Toho monster film color release, also directed by Honda...some may claim Rodan is a sci-fi film, and it does have many sci-fi elements, but it will always be a monster film to me). Appearing in the film is Kenji Sahara (King Kong vs. Godzilla, Attack of the Mushroom People), Yumi Shirakawa (Rodan), Momoko Kochi (Godzilla), Akihiko Hirata (Rodan, Gorath, the Mysterious Star), and Takashi Shimura (The Seven Samurai, Godzilla).
As the film starts, we see a village of Asian peoples celebrating something or other, only to be interrupted by a fire consuming a nearby forest. Three men foolishly decide to try and put out the massive fire, with predictable results (do you like your sushi fried?). Later said village suffers yet another disaster in that a giant sinkhole swallows them whole...better luck in the next life, I suppose. An investigation provides little information, except for the presence of radioactivity (that's never a good sign, doubly so in a film like this) and this marks the appearance of what looks like a giant, metal, flightless bird that shoots destructive eyebeams. Whatever was left of the village is now completely gone, and the army soon arrives to deal with the menace. There's the obligatory fleeing of Asian peoples, and the creature is finally brought down, and it is learned that it is not of this Earth. Turns out the creature was controlled by a group of aliens, from the planet Mysteroid (I had a case of mysteroids once...got some cream from the drugstore and it went away) calling themselves, aptly enough, Mysterians, who have decided to take up residence on the Earth, and used the mechanical creature as a demonstration of their awesoma powers. What the heck do these Mysterians, who've arrived from the dark side of the moon (there's a Pink Floyd joke in there somewhere), want? Well, I'll give you a hint, it has something to do with our wimmin...I've come to the conclusion females are among the scarcest commodity in the universe. Anyway, beside the wimmin, they have other demands (I think if they just wanted some wimmin, we probably would have acquiesced, but then they got greedy...let that be a lesson to all you aliens out there), demands the Earth aren't willing to meet, and that means all out war! Whoo hoo! Let the fireworks begin (literally...I think some of the scenes featured actual fireworks)!
I did enjoy this film immensely, but I also had a few problems with it...the biggest fault, I suppose, is the story often gets bogged down as the characters seem to be in a continual state of conferencing and holding meetings, trying to decide how to deal with the aliens. This was certainly one way to dole out the exposition, but if all the meeting scenes were removed, the 88-minute runtime would have probably been reduced to about an hour. I wasn't even born at the time this film came out, but I gotta figure the effects were pretty amazing, in all their full color glory. They still come off really well. The rubber bird suit looked pretty funky (strangely, our handguns have no effect on the creature!), but everything else was top notch, especially the realistic nature of miniatures. Apparently the giant creature wasn't initially part of the story, but the producer decided the film needed a giant creature, so maybe that's why it has an odd fit with relation to the rest of the film. The Mysterians looked pretty cool, sort of like retro Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers (who I don't care much for, and probably even less now as it would appear they `borrowed' their costume concept from here). I think one of my favorite elements of the film is the music, created by legendary composer Akira Ifukube. It's very distinct, aggressive (as the aliens), and indicates some operatic influences (think of the effectiveness of Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyries and its usage in Francis For Coppola's Apocalypse Now during the helicopter scene). Seems rare to find a composer these days whose music blends in so nicely with the material on the screen.
The picture, in TohoScope (the early Japanese equivalent of widescreen anamorphic), is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 (this was one of the first Japanese films to see such a release), and looks wonderful. There are a few scratches present (especially during the air combat sequences), but I sure this will probably blow away any VHS copy you may possess. As for the audio, there are five separate tracks available in English 5.1 Surround, Japanese 5.1 Surround, Japanese Mono, Spanish Mono, a commentary track featuring a moderator and two special effects artists named Koichi Kawakita and Shinji Higuchi (they all speak in Japanese, but there are English subtitles), and finally you can watch the film with music only. Other special features include a photo gallery, design gallery, storyboards, an original trailer, and previews for Matango - Attack of the Mushroom People (1963), Dogora (1964), Varan (1962), Gappa The Triphibian Monster (1967), and One Missed Call (2003).

I honestly have no idea just what else is on this tape but to be truthful, it's worth the price for "Bambi Meets Godzilla" alone, since this gem is perhaps the funniest one-minute, one-joke cartoon ever made. It's quite simply a classic. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Newland for "producing" their son Marv!

Destroy All Monsters - 50th Anniversary Special Edition (1969) Review

Destroy All Monsters - 50th Anniversary Special Edition (1969)

This is one of the greatest Godzilla movies ever produced, but this DVD version is far from perfect. Unfortunately, this is just a re-issue of the same DVD released a few years ago. The film transfer is exactly the same as the one previously released by ADV films, which has a recently re-dubbed mono soundtrack. The ADV soundtrack is much inferior to the one originally produced for American International Pictures in 1968, which featured an excellent voice-cast and a different script. Apparently the AIP version can't be published because the ownership rights are in limbo. Based on the cover notes, I bought this DVD believing it had the original AIP voice-tracks. No such luck. The folks at ADV deliberately stretch the truth. The cover art claims it's the "50th Anniversary Special Edition", but Destroy All Monsters was made in 1968, which makes this DVD issue the 36th anniversary for the film (in 2004). The 50th year, is a reference to the first Godzilla movie "Gojira" made in 1954, but the text makes no mention of Gojira or Godzilla. It also claims to contain "The original motion picture and soundtrack", which is misrepresentation. The original film was Japanese language, and this DVD isn't even the original English version. I would've been a lot less disappointed if they had at least given this version some chapter stops and stereo audio (which there isn't). There's not even a menu for this low budget version. If you try to hit the chapter advance button, the movie starts over from the beginning. There's no menus, no extras, no subtitles, no secondary audio tracks, no trailer, no nothing. The only thing that's different from ADV's first issue of this movie, is the cover art and the addition of a music CD. The CD contains 30 mono-audio music tracks from the movie soundtrack. The music score is wonderful, but the audio is not stereo and the fidelity is only fair. My point of contention is that ADV is trying to fool us into believing this movie has the original audio soundtrack, but instead gives you fine-print on the back mentioning an extra music CD. Buyer beware, if you already own the original release of this DVD, don't be fooled into thinking this is a different version.

Dragon Wars - D-War (2007) Review

Dragon Wars - D-War (2007)

I am a 56-year-old movie buff and right off let me confess, I love this movie.
In my opinion this movie was never intended to be taken seriously at all. Consider that in the first exposition scenes you have not one, but 2 entirely different characters in different scenes say directly to the narrator in the middle of his attempted explanation of this nonsensical tale "what are you talking about?" I don't believe this was accidental folks, this is called comedy.
One thing to be aware of when you're watching this movie is that the director is the most popular comedian in the entire country of Korea. He gained his fame and fortune as comedic actor. In other words his entire professional career has been based on making people laugh.
I think most people who are reviewing this movie are completely missing the comedy. Frankly I found the movie to be hilarious.
How anyone could possibly take this movie seriously after seeing the Darth Vader character stupidly get run over by a car 2 times in a row is beyond me. That was obviously comedy (and very funny).
Yes it is entirely overblown. Layers of complete absurdity are piled with additional layers of even more absurdity. Which makes it a perfect satire of the Star Wars, Lord of the rings, Harry Potter and all of the rest of the overly pompous mega-movies. If there is a big overblown scene in one of those movies you're going to see a similar scene in this one.
A few examples. The Gungan Army scene from Star Wars episode 4 -- only this time the Army with the cute, smiling dinosaur critters with the weapons on their backs are the bad guys. And these smiling dinosaurs are wreaking total havoc on Los Angeles fighting the LAPD. The incongruity of the destruction and the cute smiley dinosaurs is absolutely hilarious.
Remember the giant explosion scene in Independence Day with the flames and flying cars rushing up the street? It's here, but with a very funny twist. In this movie the same thing is done by a giant snake rushing up the street. The exorcism scene in the Exorcist? Yep, it's here too, tossed in like the kitchen sink, completely unconnected to any plot points.
Giant marching Imperial Army and Ninjas? Sure enough. Darth Vader character with a ridiculously laughable sinister voice? Of course. Rampaging Jurassic Park dinosaurs? You got it. Dogfights straight out of Independence Day? It's here too.
Savor the site of Ray Harryhausen look-alike creatures doing massive destruction that Ray most certainly dreamed of, but couldn't accomplish with the technology of his day. I can tell you that he is smiling in his grave cause this movie delivers a wonderful tribute to his work.
Let me name a few more of the movies that have tributes here. Pitch Black, King Kong, Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Men in Black, Dragonheart, Ghostbusters, Godzilla, Ninja Mutant Turtles, the Host, The Thing, Rodan and even Monty Python and the holy Grail. It doesn't stop there, look carefully and you'll see many many more.
Does the acting suck? Absolutely. Is the story completely incomprehensible? It most certainly is. Is it even more ridiculous than Star Wars, Lord of the rings or dozens of others. Yes it is, and I believe that was exactly the point.
I predict this movie will be watched at midnight showings at colleges 10 years from now with folks rolling in the aisles.
I have seen lots of Hollywood studio comedies recently and have not laughed nearly as hard as I did watching Dragon wars. I literally had tears streaming from my eyes many times because I couldn't stop laughing.
So give yourself a break from any pretensions of seriousness, have a glass of wine and have a fun time watching and laughing at the funniest, most ridiculous spectacular eye candy CGI movie ever.

Godzilla: Save the Earth Review

Godzilla: Save the Earth

As of now alot of critics are really hating on this game, but if you're a Godzilla fan do not believe them. Someone looking for spot on controls and a non-button mashing fighting game should probably look elsewhere. Being a Godzilla fan for over 25 yrs. I can honestly say the monsters all behave and have their signature growls as if I was watching one of the Godzilla movies. Graphics are real good on the ps-2 and the monsters all look better then the DAMM from the gamecube and x-box. Environments are quite large and the selection of monsters is outstanding. Lots of modes to unlock and this makes the replay value very high, considering the fact that if you're a big G-fan then you will want to go through them all w/all the monsters to unleash all their different attacks.
But the game is not perfect, by any means. Some of the negatives would be the fact that on some of the modes and in Action mode you have to also control the camera when firing your beam. I am all about playing games that are difficult, but Atari makes this part FRUSTRATING!! It is kind of annoying. When going through Action mode if you quit at any point the only part that is saved is any points you have accumulated (which goes towards buying monsters, arenas etc..). Therefore if you were on the 3rd. level forget about continuing from that point the next time you turn on the ps-2. You have to begin at the very beginning of Action mode. I forgive the modes where you have to control the camera-practice makes perfect, but this part, the developers really blew it. One of the worst things a programmer could do to a true gamer. Another downside is the music-it is pretty bland. When you finish action mode the Godzilla march is played, big deal. It would sound so much better if it was played during a match, as well as all the other anthems from the Godzilla movies. The story for action mode was rushed and alot of it was cut before the game was released. This creates a story that really makes no sense, but considering that alot of the big G-movies had plots that either made little sense or were pointless, then this kinda makes the action mode feel cheesy-but in a good way. I wish you could play as Biollante and Hedorah, w/like 18 monsters to choose from this is just a personal gripe. But we are talking about a game that is based on movies where men in rubber suits beat the hell out of eachother, so the monsters do not move like soul caliber characters. This makes you feel like you really are controlling a 300 ft. tall monster-excellent!
So all in all this game is a lot of fun and I felt like I was in an actual Godzilla movie. If you like button mashing and enjoy the Godzilla movies-trust me you will love this game. Aside from the above flaws Atari really did justice to Godzilla. An incredibly fun game!!!!

The quote I said is not by me I saw it on youtube. Anyway raid 2020 well first off I have to say is that the front cover of this game is really cool a futureistc cop standing in front of dead robots in his wake just a big spin to people thinking that this game might be good. Ok now to the plot the charcter you play as is named officer shadow and it is up to him to stop a drug kingpin named Pitbull sounds promising enough. Well the controls are very werid you can move left and right just fine but when he moves up and down he moves at a 45 degree angle. Next is the enemy run down you have drug dealers who aren't that hard to beat and seagulls craping on you. Yes seagull crap can kill you in this god awful game. In my opinion if your a nes collector its just good to have it on display so buy it for the sake of saying "hey I have raid 2020" but if you want to play this game just stay away from this game and save all your money, all five bucks.

War of the Monsters Review

War of the Monsters

It's like they took everything that I loved about the monster game genre (King Of The Monsters, Rampage), used it and improved it! So, yes you can feel the king of the monsters feel in it. But, it does it's own thing which is a lot bigger. The single player is very enjoyable and with solid A.I. and absolutely packed with features. You also have options of easy or normal, easy being challenging and normal being hard!. So far I've used Magmo and Ultra. You can really feel the differences. Magmo is super slow, but strong. He's just amazing to watch in action.
Ultra V will probably be everyones favorite. He's like using a transformer or samurai mech toy you had as a kid. Lazer eyes (Complete with the 'bzap bzap' sound effects), a plasma samurai sword and turbo boosters. Every monster I have seen so far is impressive. And, the intro is one of the best I have seen in a game in a long, long time.
The control system becomes 2nd nature within a few minutes of play and the camera is almost flawless. Playing the game with the mechs is an absolute blast. And it feels different then playing with the other monsters. It's hard to explian. Definitely, my favorite character is Ultra V. A Samurai Mech who knows Kung Fu, shoots lazers froms his eyes, has a grappling hookfor the classic 'Get Over Here' move', and a plasma sword. The sound effects of his jet boost are classic, and the metal impact his strikes and landings make are nothing short of spectacular. His Gundam voice has to be mentioned also. My friend has fallen in love with using Robo 47, the American Mech. A very cool robot if I do say so myself. Other cool ones are of course the lava monster, Magmo. Ultra powerful. The rock monster, Agamo who has the best voice in the game. His sound effects are amazing, youcan hear the rock against metal, or whatever surface he is hitting landing on.
The destruction of the city is amazing, eveything is destructible and it visually implemented to perfection. Smooth framrate throught the entire game, for both single and multiplayer modes. It's about as much fun as I have had with a game, maybe ever. It's hard to say whether it will go down as one of my all time faves, because I can't test it's staying power like that yet, but it's a blasr.
It feels like a monster movie come to life. I feel like a little kid playing it. As do my friends. Togera (the Godzilla/Beast from 20,000 feet below) has got to be one of the coolest looking monsters I have ever seen. Especially his Mecha-Togera outfit. His green fire breathe is cool as hell, a great special. I can say the same about all the monsters really. They are straight out of some great campy 50's Horror flic. The designers really captured that great work those old movies did, it makes your imagination feel great while you play. It's like a really great toy come to life. My friend I just got done playing a MARATHON session. We went at it tooth and nail late one night as his Ultra V took on my Robo-47 in an epic 'best of three' fight that took nearly an hour to complete. We unlocked a few secrets. The best being this (Not about Sweet Tooth, who is a secret character in the game!)....is that you can unlock skins! It's become apparent to me that the 4th version is either an entirely new design or an amazing offshoot to the original. This is a very cool treat in my opinion. Unlocking the 4th of each monster is almost like getting a new character. These aren't just skins, but new designs! Kudos to Incognito for including something so cool. And multiplayer, wow. Whereas bouts in most fighting games are over in a few minutes, you can make a single fight last for over 20 minutes. As you learn the levels, you start to understand how to best use the items, and can really keep things challenging. Health and energy icons spawn in specific locations to help make the fights about more than just beating on each other so their is endless replay value. This is some of the most fun I have had with a 'new' game in a long time.
