The Notebook (Limited Edition Gift Set) (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)THE NOTEBOOK has long been my favorite of Nicholas Sparks' many books, so it is a happy surprise to me that the wonderful story transferred to the big screen with all the sweetness, warmth, and tenderness that made the book a runaway best seller.
The best part of this movie was the incredible chemistry between Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling as the young lovers Allie and Noah. Their story was told by an elderly couple in a nursing home. James Garner and Gena Rowlands were outstanding as the devoted "Duke" and the woman with irreversible dementia. As Duke recounted the story of Allie and Noah from the notebook he carried with him, the lady's memory began to come back and she could remember.
The movie always changes the book but the one major change (the ending) which had the audience letting out a collective gasp and reaching for the nearest tissue was, in my opinion, really good even if it was pure Hollywood melodrama.
Why does a movie like THE NOTEBOOK appeal to so many? Is it that every woman longs for a man who loves as deeply as Noah? Is it that every one wants a love that transcends all problems---those of class, education, family objection----and lasts forever? Or just maybe in a world of high-tech gizmos and high security alerts, it's nice to get back to basics with a really good love story....and this is definitely that.

Message in a Bottle (Snap Case) (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)I found this movie absolutely fascinating;the story was a typical romance. It explored the human emotion and curiosity that we all feel when we find an insight into another person's relationship. Kevin Costner was your typical man of the sea and portrayed a man not ready to move on with his life after the tragic loss of his partner. It took someone like Robyn Penn Wright to stir the deeply hidden emotions but even then she could not compare to his lost love. She gave him inspiration and made him dig deep to find his true self. Paul Newman was superb as the crusty kindly father and without his inclusion in the film, be it as a supporting role, a lot of the emotion would hasve been lost. The pain suffered by the inlaws at the loss of their daughter was so true to life when someone they love dies so tragically. All in all the scenery was superb and the DVD is recommended

Nights in Rodanthe (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a real tear-jerker. The acting is fantastic and the emotions seem very real. The story line is well-considered, but it is definitely not the typical love story. The best way to describe this film is that it just feels real. You could imagine the characters being pulled off the screen and placed in the "real world" without any problem. I would definitely recommend Nights in Rodanthe to those who like a good love story with plenty of drama.

(More customer reviews)Having read the Nicholas Sparks novel nearly two years ago, I was anxiously looking forward to seeing how the wonderful book transferred to the big screen. I was happy that the sweetness and sincerity of first love, true love made the transition with all the warmth and sincerity it deserved. Shane West, whom you may know from TV's "Once and Again," and teen singing sensation Mandy Moore play the young lovers with a sincerity that is not only appealing but refreshing in this era of raunchy and raw teen films.
I was a bit uncomfortable the first ten minutes as I thought the movie was heading down the usual teen movie path, but my fears were quickly dispelled when popular boy Landon Carter was punished for his part in a prank that left a fellow student paralyzed and ordered by the principal to join the drama club in order to meet some new people. Jamie Sullivan, the school outcast and laughing stock, is one of the people he meets. He joins his crowd in poking fun of her, but soon comes to value her friendship and admires the way she is self-confident about who she is and what she wants. With so many teen movies focused on sex, it is refreshing to see these two teens build a relationship based on mutual respect and values.
Alas, the course of true love is never smooth and, without spoiling the ending for you, I will tell you that I found myself crying unashamedly as the movie drew to a close. Shyly, I glanced around me and noticed everyone from teens to grandmas openly weeping. "A Walk to Remember" is a nice, comforting film that I highly recommend for everyone who loves a love story and remembers what it was like to fall in love for the first time.
