The Delta Force (1986) Review

The Delta Force (1986)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Delta Force came out in 1986, not long after the Bombing of the marine barracks in Lebanon and the release of the hostages in Iran. These two events fuel the Delta Force about a passenger aircraft on its way to New York that is hi-jacked by Arab terrorists and diverted to Beirut. The cast looks like one of those big-budget, 1970's era disater films with Joey Bishop, Shelly Winters, Martin Balsam, Lanie Kazan, and George Kennedy all playing passengers on the flight. The terrorists are led by Robert Forster as Abdul.
With the hi-jacking, the Army puts the Delta Force to work to plan a rescue operation. Overseeing the command is Lee Marvin as Col. Alexander playing the grizzled veteran office not so different than the part he played in The Dirty Dozen. Chuck Norris Major Scott McCoy who is the leader of the team, called back into active action for the mission. The planned rescue mission is aborted when they soon learn that more terrorists boarded the plane when it stopped to re-fuel in Algeria. The terrorists are demanding Isreal release dozens of terrorists from prison or they will kill the hostages. They demonstrate their intentions by viciously beating and killing a young American naval diver as well as holding all the Jewish passengers separate from the rest. The women are eventually released but the men are taken to a prison once they land in Beirut and it's up to the Delta Force to rescue the hostages.
The stereotypes run hot and heavy in Delta Force on both the Arab and Jewish side. And not only that, but there's a German flight attendant who just CAN'T be the one to pick out the Jewish passengers due to her (evidently) instinctive guilt over the concentration camps and holocaust of WWII, and she courageously tries to help the American divers by telling them to hide their Naval ID cards. There's a lot of posturing speeches by both the terrorists and the hostages including George Kennedy who plays a Catholic priest and insists on being put with the Jewish men since Jesus was "King of the Jews". it's all pretty hokey but also great fun. Politcally correct? Maybe not but who gives a damn! It's really not unlike many WWII era war movies. The Delta Force is black and white and you know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Politics is not even worth mentioning.
Chuck Norris will never be considered a great actor but he also never tried to do too much. He played the strong, fairly silent type of hero perfectly, and with a strong sense of patriotism. The action scenes were very well done and you couldn't help but cheer when the hostages were rescued and the bad guys got theirs in the end. Cannon films churned out the action flicks in the 1980's and this was one of the best.

Political extremists have taken innocent people hostage and only super-soldiers Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin can rescue them in this "astounding mix of fact, fantasy and heavy-duty adventure" (Variety). Co-starring Maltin Balsam and Shelley Winters, The Delta Force is 130 nonstop minutes of explosive, wall-to-wall action! When a U.S. passenger plane is seized by vicious hijackers and taken to Beirut, the president calls in The Delta Forcea crack team of commandos led by ColonelNick Alexander (Marvin) and Major Scott McCoy (Norris). Against all odds, the men blast into the compound andtaking no prisonersrescue the hostages. But the mission is not yet over. A few remaining passengers are being "escorted" to Teheran, initiating a desperate race against time as Alexander and McCoy try to save themand avenge America's honorbefore it's too late.

A Soldier's Story (1984) Review

A Soldier's Story (1984)
Average Reviews:

A phenomenal cast brings Charles Fuller's adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize-winning play to the big screen. Howard E. Rollins, Jr., is magnetic as the Army Captain sent to investigate the murder of a black Sergeant in Louisiana during World War II; his careful detective work uncovers the complex layers of racism (both externalized and internalized) that led up to the crime. Adolph Caesar gives a superb, Oscar-nominated performance as the (unsympathetic) victim whose story is told through a series of flashbacks. And Larry Riley, David Alan Grier, Robert Townsend, and the always-magnificent Denzel Washington register strongly in important supporting roles. Effective as both a mystery and a social commentary, this worthy nominee for the 1984 Best Picture Oscar is tightly directed by Norman Jewison.
The DVD presentation of this recent screen classic offers an excellent film-to-video transfer, featuring a sharp picture and crisp sound. The disc contains both the widescreen and fullscreen editions, and includes the original theatrical trailer. Also offered is a short but very moving 1999 documentary entitled "March to Freedom", which recounts several astonishing real-life stories of racism in the American armed forces during World War II. All-in-all, this is a highly recommended DVD that deserves a place in your home video library.

Swamp Fox was great. But why release only 3 of the 8 episodes? Why not a seperate set for each show with all of the episodes? Please, disney, gives us the whole series! My fuzzy VHS tapes off of TV are getting old!

Delta Force 2 - Operation Stranglehold (1990) Review

Delta Force 2 - Operation Stranglehold (1990)

This movie hit me like a gut-punch! I expected a cheesy Rambo rip-off, but this was one of the greatest action movies ever! Ramon Cota is even more threatening than Hans Gruber from "Die Hard!" Hats off to Chuck Norris and Billy Drago. The fight choreography makes more recent action movies look like a Riverdance routine. I swear Chuck actually hit some guys making this movie!
Do not forget to watch the "training circle" scene with DVD slow-motion.
My only complaint was that the DVD wasn't letterboxed. A movie this good deserves a better presentation.

The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966) Review

The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966)
Average Reviews:

I have watched this movie more times than I can count, and each time I find myself laughing until I cry. When a Russian submarine accidentally runs aground of a sleepy little island summer town, the people literally go nuts. Alan Arkin, Carl Reiner, Brian Keith and Jonathan Winters are just a few of the many fine actors who make this movie a laugh a minute. When the bumbling Russians tie up and gag the elderly Post-Mistress "Muriel Everitt" and sit her on top of the refrigerator - you will laugh until your sides ache when her nearly deaf husband eats breakfast 2 feet from her and never realizes she's behind him struggling to get his attention. The sight of Carl Reiner tied up face to face with the hefty town operator and their efforts to hop down a steep flight of steps, (ending, naturally, with the heavy woman falling on top of Carl Reiner and passing out ) is more than I could take with out laughing until I cried. Please rent this movie and have the entire family watch it with you. It's in the genre of "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" and you will enjoy every moment !

VeggieTales - Duke and the Great Pie War Review

VeggieTales - Duke and the Great Pie War
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the latest episode in the Veggie series, we get a lesson on loving your family. They take two Biblical stories and use them to show the importance of taking care of your family over your own interests.
First up is "Baby Sitter in DeNile." Laura Carrot gets to play Miriam, who is upset at the attention her parents are playing to little brother Moses. And she really doesn't want to have to watch him. Will she change her mind? While I found the beginning of the segment a little confusing, I enjoyed this different take on the beginning of Moses' life.
The main feature is "Duke and the Great Pie War," a loose retelling of the story of Ruth set in a fairy tale kingdom. Can knight in training Duke Duke win the joust and the heart of Sweet Petunia? And will the fact that she's a Rubarbarian hurt his standing in his kingdom? This segment was hysterical with such puns are serf music and the names of the knights. And be sure to catch the question posed by the Abbott of Costello.
Sandwiched between these segments is "The Blues with Larry," the part of the show where Larry comes out and tries to sing the blues. Even help from special guest Blind Lemon Lincoln can't seem to get Larry sad enough to actually sing the blues.
Of course, if you're familiar with VeggieTales, you know what to expect on this DVD. Bonus features include the normal behind the scenes, audio commentary, family activities, games, karaoke, and more.
While the first segment was a little sub par, the rest of the DVD made up for it. This is yet another solid 45 minutes of family entertainment.
