(More customer reviews)First of all, kudos to Disney for *finally* including a MANDARIN LANGUAGE AUDIO TRACK (the original DVD had French and Spanish- no Chinese). It's about time!!!
Next: I have to emphatically disagree with reviewer Bill Mydo below. -You will excuse me if I spend some little time defending this film against his critique; Mulan happens to be my favorite Disney animated movie, second only perhaps to Beauty and the Beast. Perhaps my being Chinese-American may have something to do with it, as does the fact that I strongly identify with the character's self-doubts. Still, I am fairly particular as to what I consider "good art"; and it boggles and confounds me that anyone would fail to see the difference between this movie and, for example, Hunchback or Hercules.
Yes, Disney's Mulan is very much a western/ American movie, made for western and American- not Asian- audiences. No, they "didn't get it right"; or, not exactly. But I never expected them to, and I give them a good deal of credit for trying. They came quite a bit closer that I ever thought that they would. Nor do I find this movie overly feminist (no more than Snow White or Cinderella are "chauvinist"). Mulan may be a strong female character, but she is not Aladdin's Princess Jasmine. Mulan is not defined by rebellion, nor by what she rejects. Instead she upholds her sense of honor as she struggles to find out who she is and where she fits in. Moreover, in a genre known for its blatant ad nauseum boy-meets-girl love themes, I truly appreciated the downplayed understatedness of the "interest" between Mulan and Captain Shang.
As to the "commercial" aspect of the film; yes, it had its tie-ins and its merchandising. What Disney movie doesn't? But the real issue is the worth of the film itself, and on this I take exception to the review below. I believe there is more in it than Mr. Mydo gives credit for.
The film does have its awkward moments. The scene with the match-maker and Mulan's first entrance into the army camp are both extremely painful to watch- I do not enjoy watching anyone be utterly humiliated- not even a cartoon character (and I do not believe that someone as bright as Mulan would fumble so badly over simply coming up with a new name). I also find it somewhat irksome that one minor character, Mushu the dragon, continually steals attention away from the movie's proper focus. And there are a number of jokes and visual gags that closely border on PG. I found this in somewhat poor taste in a kid's movie.
But these faults are counterbalanced, and more than compensated for, by the scenes that really work. The opening "brush painting" of the Great Wall; Mulan's song (Reflections) and the ensuing scene of loving encouragement from her father; the scene where she decides to leave home; her heart-to-heart talk with Mushu at the abandoned camp in the mountains; the Imperial Palace where she is honored by the Emperor before all China... the sheer artistry of these scenes is breathtaking.
When the Special Edition DVD is released, I intend to be first in line!

The Powerpuff Girls - Boogie Frights (1998) Review

(More customer reviews)This is the first of three in a series of detailed reviews from the videos comprising the Powerpuff 3-Pack. Video: Boogie Frights, and it is the best of all the Powerpuff collections.
The title episode is a take-off on the disco song, not the movie with Mark Wahlberg and Burt Reynolds. Pop culture references: disco music, Saturday Night Fever, and a funny one involving the Death Star battle in Star Wars:A New Hope. The Boogie Man hatches a sinister plot to plunge Townsville into eternal darkness, into one long disco party. One of the most precious scenes involve Blossom and Buttercup arguing about wanting to stay up late. In the middle of this, a large lump scooches thru the middle of the bed. A nervous Bubbles pops up, surrounded by her stuffed animals. Awww!! There's also a theme of confronting one's fear that comes up in the end. (Rating: 5)
"Slumbering With The Enemy" has the Powerpuff Girls inviting all the girls for a slumber party at their place. Guess who else shows up? A certain simian with blonde pigtailed hair and long dress called... Mojeesha! The girls keep an eye on "her" and time and again, embarrass themselves by interpreting "her" attempts to join in as acts of evil. But why is "she" here anyway? The montage of Mojeesha and the Girls in various costumes are great fun. (Rating: 5)
"Ice Sore" features Blossom's ice powers, which comes in handy during a real scorcher of a day. Blossom's tendency to trust authority, particularly the Professor's, and her guilt when her good intentions go wrong, are demonstrated here. Her powers cause some jealousy from her sisters, whose powers don't seem to equal something so useful. (Rating: 5)
The Shonen Knife video for "Buttercup" features clips from various episodes as well as a flurry of freeze frames of certain villains. Although primarily about Buttercup, it features the other girls as well. The song's snarling power-pop/punk rhythms match Buttercup's power punches to a tee. (Rating: 5)
One of the best stories in the series is "The Rowdyruff Boys", in which Mojo Jojo, after being foiled time and again by the Puffs, decides to create the antithesis of the Girls. Remember the old rhyme, "sugar, spice, and everything nice." What are little boys made of? How Mojo gets the ingredients are great. However, Mojo's substitute for Chemical X proves just as effective, and the three boys really beat the stuffing out of the Girls, making the Boys one of their most formidable adversaries. However, the way the Girls achieve their victory is one of the most creative solutions ever seen. (Rating: 5)
"Helter Shelter" is a unique episode in that there are no villains to be fought. Rather, the girls have to deal with Bubbles and her proclivity to bring back animals. Despite being lectured about this by the Professor, she outdoes herself by bringing home a baby-whale, which she places in the middle window of their room like the car at the Hard Rock Cafe. The frenzied scene where they frantically try to find a hiding place for the whale in the house is the funniest, as is the exchange: "The professor's gonna have a cow." Bubbles says: "NO! A baby whale!" Bubbles is clearly a champion for animals, a tried and true romantic. (Rating: 5)
A perfect 5 rating for the Girls all-around!

The New Adventures of Flash Gordon - The Complete Series (1979) Review

(More customer reviews)This is the Flash Gordon animated series that aired on Saturday mornings from 1979-1981 and is one of the best shows that ever came out of the Filmation studios. The animation is high quality for its time and the stories were very true to the original 1930's comic strip. To top it all off this DVD set will give you a host of goodies you hardly ever see for a cartoon DVD release from the 80's.
Do any of you remember the cartoon Tarzan: Lord of the Jungle back in the 70's? The same company, Filmation, created the Flash Gordon animated adventures. What that means is the artwork is of a good quality. We're talking movie quality (like the better stuff from Heavy Metal) with vibrant colors and even some lively animation. A lot of this animation came from rotoscoping and it looks awesome (rotoscoping is a process where real actors/stuntment are filmed and then traced over on cel animation to create very fluid movement in animation). While not all the animation was rotoscoped it makes up for the fact that 70's television animation was limited to a pretty low framerate due to budget constraints. In the end you get something that blows away anything on TV at the time.
You gotta appreciate the attention to detail that you get from a cartoon from this era, but there are drawbacks. Sometimes you see the same rotoscoped action again and again. Not that big of a deal when you realize each episode came out weekly. What really bugged me was the use of stock sound effects that really didn't fit the grandness of the show. Now and then some cheesy "kid show" boing sound and such would pop up and that would kill the whole polished feel I get from the show.
The episodes were set with a serial feel to them, having cliffhangers on many of the episodes. This is not only keeping true to the classic comics (and matinees from the 40's) it's a great way to keep you excited about the show. This show was critically acclaimed if that gives you any indication. While the script isn't as sophisticated as what you see in more recent shows like the Batman Animated Series you have to keep in mind this was made in 1980 when cartoons weren't taken seriously at all. I will admit the later episodes do get kiddied up more with a goofy baby dragon making cutesy noises as it "talks"... I blame the network executives for that.
This DVD gives you the ENTIRE SERIES. All 24 episodes that aired are on this set. This is such a breath of fresh air after seeing cartoon after cartoon get released with just a few episodes on single release. Another breath of fresh air is that this DVD will have a really nice listing of extras. Here's what you get:
- Blasting off with Flash Gordon. A 20-minute documentary with interviews from creators and historians about Flash Gordon. You definitely feel the pride they had working on the show and you get some nice in depth background info on the process. One thing that bugged me about the documentary was how the staff really railed on the 1980 Flash Gordon movie. For people who said they understood the classic Flash Gordon they sure missed the mark in their assessment of the movie. Maybe they were bitter or something about the timeliness of both projects.
- Character and setting profiles, which basically give you an overall summary of Flash's friends, enemies and places on planet Mongo that he visits in the series. Nothing new that you won't find just watching the episodes.
- Commentary tracks on three episodes with the show's producer, writer and animator.
- Interactive storyboards you can compare to various action footage.
- Large gallery of sketches of all the main characters.
- DVD ROM content with entire scripts, storyboards and the series bible (sweet).
- Easter Eggs
- Bonus episode from Defenders of the Earth cartoon series.
- Two collectible 4"x6" trading cards by comic book artists Frank Cho and Gene Ha
The DVD was first released at the San Diego ComicCon July, 2006. Then released everywhere about a month later. This is THE collection for this series. They are doing it up better than any other DVD release of a cartoon series I have seen from the 70's or 80's. If you're a fan of this show you absolutely, positively want to get this set. If you are a fan of Flash Gordon or those classic matinee serials that inspired movies like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark then you too will find something to enjoy in this series.

While adults can enjoy these as animated comedy, for kids they seem to be about how the characters use their imaginations in playing together. In fact, I wish they'd make NEW ones! Can you imagine some of this year's blockbusters redone with chipmunks? (Might be an improvement.)

3. "If I Never Knew You" in the movie and completely animated. Major addition to the last half of the movie.
4. Both versions of the film, the 1995 cut and the 2003 "Director's Cut".
5. Loads of extras including a documentary, updated audio commentary track, sections for each major character with art, concept drawings, deleted scenes, scenes that never made it past the concept stage......you get the idea.

(More customer reviews)"Looney Tunes: Back In Action" is the perfect marriage of live action and animation. To complete this picturesque scenario, it takes a "humanized" all-star cast (Jenna Elfman, Brendan Fraser, Timothy Dalton, including others), along with some zany Looney Tunes charcters (yes, most of them are here, folks, from Bugs Bunny [that "wascallwy wabbit"] to Yosemite Sam), with all of the above combined to make one colossal motion picture for everyone aged seven to seventy. Everyone's out to recover an artifact that could wind up causing universal damage (a pricey gem known as "The Blue Monkey"). Its dastardly, evil "owner" (Steve Martin) wants to make certain the world is freed from all human existence, and prefers to "monkey around" with evolution, so to speak. It's a race against time, as our female assistant (Elfman), son of a movie star (Fraser), Bugs, Daffy Duck (and an all-star cast of "Tunes" attempt to free a senior movie star (Dalton) from the clutches of one mad scientist (Martin), who is the head of ACME Corporation. When I say "LT:BIA" is a "universal" motion picture, I am not just speaking in tongues, as the gang literally spans the globe to search for clues. This journey stretches from Las Vegas to Paris, France, to the wilds of Africa (FACTUAL NOTE: The Nevada Desert does not contain any species of various cacti - just shrubs of tumbleweed and tons of sand. The saguaro cactus plants were there to provide a backdrop for Wile E. Coyote and The Road Runner to make their spectacular entrances). All of the elements that were featured in the classic Warner Bros. cartoons are here: classic character lines (ex: "What's Up Doc", "What In Tarnation", etc.), various sight gags (ex: automated device running out of fuel inches before touching ground, the positioning of Daffy Duck's beak, etc.), including others not mentioned here. Bill Goldberg (another wrestler turned actor) gives a masterful performance as one of the bad guys as well. Even the brief cameo of Michael Jordan is worthy of a look-see. Also, besides the too-brief appearance of Speedy "The Fastest Mouse In All Mexico" Gonzales, the only thing really missing, is Speedy's slow-footed cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez. If only this journey included a visit to Mexico (including Speedy's and Slowpoke's mouse buddies), then "Looney Tunes: Back In Action" would have netted a five-star rating for sure. As it is, it earns all four stars for its directorial and animation qualities (not to mention a fine human and not-so-human main and supporting cast), which makes it a must-see motion picture. As Porky Pig would say: "TH-TH-THE-THAT'S ALL FOLKS!!!".

The season gets 5 Stars over all rating.
Rainforest Shmainforest 5 Stars - This is part one of an unofficial two parter. Gust voice Jennifer Aniston. The boys get sent to Costa Rica (Someone that rated this said Puerto Rico, not a true fan if he can't even get the location right, I'm sure he'll revise his review when he reads this) by Mr. Mackey to sing in the kids choir "Getting Gay with Kids". The group gets lost in the Rainforest when a reptile eats their guide. Cartman saves the day.
Spontaneous Combustion 5 Stars - This is part two of an unofficial two parter. The mayor wants Stan's dad to figure out why the citizens of South Park are spontaneously combusting and Stan and Kyle Crucify Cartman so that he can be resurrected. In hopes that Kyle's dad can get an erection.
The Succubus 4 Stars - The boys become worried when chef falls in love with a demon sent from hell in the shape of a woman. Cartman has all kinds of eye problems.
Tweek vs. Craig 5 Stars - The boys bet on who would win in a fight between Tweek and Craig and then instigate the fight.
Jackovasaurs 4 Stars - The kids discover an ancient race of creatures. However, they are the most annoying creatures ever to exist. Cartman get "Authority"
Sexual Harassment Panda 4 Stars - A man in a panda suit comes to South Park to teach kids about sexual harassment after the town realizes there is a sexual harassment problem in the community.
Cat Orgy 5 Stars - This is part one of an unofficial three parter. Ms. Cartman goes to a Meteor Shower Party at Mr. Mackey's house. Cartman and Shelly fight with each other while she is baby-sitting him and Shelly's twenty something year old boyfriend Skyler comes over.
Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub 5 Stars - This is part two of an unofficial three parter. Stan and Kyle's dad end up in a hot tub together naked and they do something in front of each other. Stan is stuck in Mr. Mackey's basement with Butters, Pip, and Dougie during the Meteor Shower Party. The FBI/ATF thinks it's a cult party and they try to break it up.
Jewbilee 5 Stars - This is part three of an unofficial three parter. Kyle and Kenny go to a Jewish scout camp. This is the same night as the Meteor Shower.
What makes this an unofficial three part series is that all three episodes are on the night of the Meteor Shower, all four boys are in one of the three episodes and the FBI/ATF is seen speeding to Mr. Mackey's house in all three episodes.
Chinpokomon 5 Stars - Some familiar looking Japanese toys brainwash every kid in America and convince the children to attack Pearl Harbor for Japanese honor.
Starvin Marvin in Space 5 Stars - The Boys help Starvin Marvin when some missionaries invade his country. A Star Wars spoof
Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery 4 Stars - The Band Korn help the boys solve a Halloween mystery in this hilarious Scooby-Doo spoof.
Hooked on Monkey Phonics 5 Stars - Two strange, sheltered home-school kids decide to go to South Park Elementary.
The Red Badge of Gayness 5 Stars - Cartman decides to conquer America and change the outcome of the Civil War to win a bet with Stan and Kyle.
Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics 5 Stars - a collection of South Park Christmas songs, hosted by none other than Mr. Hankey.
Are you there God? It's Me, Jesus 5 Stars - Jesus is upset that no one cares about him anymore. Cartman thinks he is having a period because he's bleeding out of his backside. He rubs it in to the other boys saying that he has hit puberty before them.
World Wide Recorder Concert 5 Stars - The boys come up with an outrageous plan to get revenge on some New York kids who made fun of them. The plan involves finding the brown note, a note that when played make you loose control of your BMs.
Not sure what if any Special Features will be included. I would love to see Parker/Stone Commentaries on at least a few episodes.

Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends - The Complete First Season (1959) Review

(More customer reviews)I won't speak for the content, if you like Moose & Squirrel, you'll want this set. But you (and the makers) should know the Pros and Cons of the set, to whit:
PROS:
* Remastered sound and video - there are still imperfections in the video, but the color is more vivid than I've seen on TV broadcasts
* Two complete stories: Rocket Fuel Formula and Box Top Conspiracy
* Play All - Watch all episodes on each of the four discs in succession
* Entire episodes shown - including all periphral cartoons (Dudley Do-Right, Peabody, Aesop & Son, and Fractured Fairy Tales) as well as commercial lead-ins
* Nice packaging - when the first thing you see on opening a DVD set is a moose saying, "Hello Low IQers!", you know the makers respect the Jay Ward tradition!
CONS:
* Altered Title - The title sequence is altered in the middle to change it from the original to "Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends", with an obvious switch in voice and animation quality. The alteration is cheap and unnecessary
* Season Two Intro - The documentation says that the intro to each episode was the one used in the second season, which was Jay Ward's favorite. If this were a collection, that would be a good decision, but as a "season one", it should have the season one intro. This makes me think there may not be a season two set in which to display Ward's favorite intro, which would be sad indeed. All I know is I sure would have preferred to see Season One EXACTLY as it was originally presented.
* Dubious accuracy - All the tampering (season 2 intro) has achieved is to ensure that the Rocky And Bullwinle show will never be accurately reproduced.
BOTTOM LINE:
* The only way to enjoy watching Rocky Bullwinkle is to see the episodes in proper sequence
* This DVD set provides the first two stories in their entirety that comprised the first season
* Each of the four discs provides almost 3 hours of uninterrupted Jay Ward & Friends brand hilarity, what more could you want? After all, you searched for "bullwinkle", didn't you?
* You read this far? Buy it already!

Robot Chicken - Season Two (Uncensored) (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)The second season of Robot Chicken, created by geek-god Seth Green, continues the stop motion, action figure starring insanity that made the groundbreaking first season of the show so entertaining. If you enjoyed the first season of the show, you should know what to expect here: skits ranging from Star Wars to classic TV shows and cartoons, to politically charged moments, celebrity-aimed knocks, to just plain blink and you miss it insanity. However, there are some misses to this season, including a segment starring both Corey Haim and Corey Feldman as themselves, which is almost painful to watch. The good however, greatly outweighs the bad, as we see a crazed Ted Turner (not voiced by himself) masquerade around as Captain Planet, Barney the purple dinosaur looking for love, Castro playing "Dance, Dance, Revolution", a fantastic Highlander spoof starring the current day teen queens, and plenty, plenty more to boot. Also like the first season of the show, there is a horde of voice talent to be found with the second season of Robot Chicken, including Green, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Scarlet Johansson, Charlize Theron, Paul Rudd, David Hasselhoff, Seth MacFarlane, Christian Slater, Phyllis Diller, Breckin Meyer, Miguel Ferrer, Dana "Master Shake" Snyder, Dan Milano, Alex Borstein, Mila Kunis, Michelle Trachtenberg, Ginnifer Goodwin, Macaulay Culkin, Bruce Campbell, Peter Gallagher, Emma Caulfield, Melanie Griffith, Gene Simmons, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Weird Al, Kelly Hu, Roddy Piper, and Hulk Hogan. There's a great selection of special features to be found on this two disc set, and yes, like it says on the cover, season two of Robot Chicken is uncensored, and even funnier than you may think it would be without the bleeps. All in all, even for casual Adult Swim viewers, season two of Robot Chicken is a must own.

Mulan (Special Edition) (1998) Review

(More customer reviews)First of all, kudos to Disney for *finally* including a MANDARIN LANGUAGE AUDIO TRACK (the original DVD had French and Spanish- no Chinese). It's about time!!!
Next: I have to emphatically disagree with reviewer Bill Mydo below. -You will excuse me if I spend some little time defending this film against his critique; Mulan happens to be my favorite Disney animated movie, second only perhaps to Beauty and the Beast. Perhaps my being Chinese-American may have something to do with it, as does the fact that I strongly identify with the character's self-doubts. Still, I am fairly particular as to what I consider "good art"; and it boggles and confounds me that anyone would fail to see the difference between this movie and, for example, Hunchback or Hercules.
Yes, Disney's Mulan is very much a western/ American movie, made for western and American- not Asian- audiences. No, they "didn't get it right"; or, not exactly. But I never expected them to, and I give them a good deal of credit for trying. They came quite a bit closer that I ever thought that they would. Nor do I find this movie overly feminist (no more than Snow White or Cinderella are "chauvinist"). Mulan may be a strong female character, but she is not Aladdin's Princess Jasmine. Mulan is not defined by rebellion, nor by what she rejects. Instead she upholds her sense of honor as she struggles to find out who she is and where she fits in. Moreover, in a genre known for its blatant ad nauseum boy-meets-girl love themes, I truly appreciated the downplayed understatedness of the "interest" between Mulan and Captain Shang.
As to the "commercial" aspect of the film; yes, it had its tie-ins and its merchandising. What Disney movie doesn't? But the real issue is the worth of the film itself, and on this I take exception to the review below. I believe there is more in it than Mr. Mydo gives credit for.
The film does have its awkward moments. The scene with the match-maker and Mulan's first entrance into the army camp are both extremely painful to watch- I do not enjoy watching anyone be utterly humiliated- not even a cartoon character (and I do not believe that someone as bright as Mulan would fumble so badly over simply coming up with a new name). I also find it somewhat irksome that one minor character, Mushu the dragon, continually steals attention away from the movie's proper focus. And there are a number of jokes and visual gags that closely border on PG. I found this in somewhat poor taste in a kid's movie.
But these faults are counterbalanced, and more than compensated for, by the scenes that really work. The opening "brush painting" of the Great Wall; Mulan's song (Reflections) and the ensuing scene of loving encouragement from her father; the scene where she decides to leave home; her heart-to-heart talk with Mushu at the abandoned camp in the mountains; the Imperial Palace where she is honored by the Emperor before all China... the sheer artistry of these scenes is breathtaking.
When the Special Edition DVD is released, I intend to be first in line!

The Simpsons - The Complete Eighth Season (1996) Review

(More customer reviews)Season 8 may be the last above average season of The Simpsons. It would not be long after this season when I stopped enjoying The Simpsons as much. Their story lines became increasingly over-the-top and the shows were often to intent on focusing on the celebrity of the week. This season starts to go in that direction with some way-out episodes, but is not quite there yet. Season 7 is my favorite but Season 8 has many gems including "The Homer They Fall," "Burns, Baby Burns," "Lisa's Date with Density," "Hurricane Neddy," "Homer Vs. The Eighteenth Amendment," and "In Marge We Trust."
"Treehouse of Horror VII": (a) The Thing and I: Bart finds out he has an evil Siamese brother Hugo; (b) The Genesis Tub: Lisa conducts experiments with her fallen baby tooth and creates a mini society. When she is zapped into miniature size, she warns the little society against the "Dark One" (Bart); (c) Kang and Kodos come to earth posed as Bob Dole and Bill Clinton. Of course, with the two-party system, one of them has to win.
"You Only Move Twice": Homer begins working for Hank Scorpio who is a pleasant and fun boss despite his plans for global terrorism and extortion.
"The Homer They Fall": Homer becomes a boxer with Moe as his manager. All goes well until he has to fight Drederick Tatum. Great Mike Tyson and Don King characters.
"Burn, Baby Burns": Mr. Burns finds out he has a long-lost son (voiced by Rodney Dangerfield) who becomes bosom buds with Homer. Love the line: "This place is emptier than a Scottish pay toilet."
"Bart After Dark": After Bart damages property at an spooky old house, Homer forces Bart to work at the house which turns out to be a burlesque house.
"A Milhouse Divided": Milhouse's parents get divorced and his dad decides to becomes a [bad] singer.
"Lisa's Date with Density": Lisa develops a crush on bully Nelson Muntz and thinks she can change him. I love the scene where Nelson throws a rock at a window and tries to tell Lisa the cops are chasing him and he needs a hideout only to have Homer open the window to tell him Lisa's room is the next window over. I also love the auto-dialer sub-story.
"Hurricane Neddy": One of my all-time favorites. Ned Flanders's house is the only one destroyed in a hurricane and he begins to question his faith. In a flashback, we find out how he started saying doodily, diddily, as a why to hold in rage.
"The Mysterious Voyage of Homer": This is a weird one. Homer eats a bad pepper at a chili cook-off and hallucinates about a coyote who urges Homer to find his soul mate.
"The Springfield Files:" X-Files take-off.
"The Twisted World of Marge Simpson": After being booted out of the Investorettes club for being too conservative, Marge buys a pretzel franchise but keeps hitting stumbling blocks to success. Homer decides to recruit the services of Fat Tony.
"Mountain of Madness": This one is also a little odd. During a survival retreat for the nuclear power plant, Mr. Burns and Homer are snowed-into a cabin and eventually start hallucinating.
"Simpsoncalifragilisticexpiala("doh!")cious": The Simpsons need a nanny and hire Mary Pop..,uh,...Shary Bobbins.
"The Itchy and Scratchy and Poochie Show": Homer becomes the voice of a new cartoon character who doesn't go over very well.
"Homer's Phobia": Homer meets a funny guy who runs a collectible shop "Cockamamies" (gotta love that name) named John and is shocked when he discovers John, uh, prefers the company of men. Worst of all, Homer thinks John is influencing Bart.
"Brother From Another Series": (Great title). Sideshow Bob is released from prison and joins forces with his brother Cecil (voiced by David Hyde Pierce, of course, Sideshow Bob is voiced by Kelsey Grammer--get the title?). Could Bob actually be the good guy in this episode???
"My Sister, My Sitter": Lisa becomes Bart's baby sitter and Lisa is afraid she's killed her brother after knocking him down the stairs. This one is a little over-the-top.
"Homer Vs. The Eighteenth Amendment": One of my all-time favorites! Prohibition starts up again in Springfield and Homer assists Moe in creating a speakeasy. Can Homer out-fox Rex Banner?
"Grade School Confidential": Principal Skinner and Mrs. Krabappel start a romance and create controversy at Springfield Elementary. The Skinner is a virgin thing was a little much.
"The Canine Mutiny": Bart gets hold of a fake credit card and buys all kinds of stuff including a pedigree collie, Laddie. When repo-men come to collect the stuff, Bart gives them Santa's Little Helper instead of Laddie and soon regrets the decision.
"The Old Man and the Lisa": Mr. Burns, who's recently lost his fortune, joins forces with Lisa to create a recycling plant. Of course, Mr. Burns could never turn this plant into an evil operation...yeah, right! I love Moe's line about the "Little Lisa" logo: "Ah, isn't that cute. It makes Little Debbie look like a pile of puke."
"In Marge We Trust": Marge becomes the "Listen Lady" and burned-out Mr. Lovejoy is worried she has become more popular than him with his flock.
"Homer's Enemy": Frank Grimes is the new employee at the nuclear power plant and, unlike everyone else, he doesn't accept Homer's incompetence. A very dark episode.
"The Simpsons Spin-off Showcase": A 1970s-style variety show take-off of The Brady Bunch. Just as Jan refused to participate, Lisa is replaced by an actress who looks just like her...yeah, right!
"The Secret War of Lisa Simpson": Bart is forced to enlist in military school and, impressed by the discipline which seems odd since Lisa is such a free thinker that one would not think she'd be attracted to the unquestioning soldier's life, she decides to join, too. And all the boys accept her...uh, no.

Starchaser - Legend of Orin (1985) Review

(More customer reviews)Starchaser is a space opera along the same lines as Star Wars. You have the evil villain in a cape, spaceships blowing up each other, lasers flashing with neat noises, robots cracking jokes, heroes saving the day. You have it all. What ties it all together is a rather simple story that has been executed well. While some may find Starchaser too derivative I see a lot of charm in it.
The movie's biggest claim to fame is how they rotoscoped cell animation over computer animation to make various elements of the movie have a very fluid effect. This is especially true for the spaceships, which are pretty awesome for a movie made in the mid-80's. The rotoscoping technique gives a level of freedom of movement in the spaceship scenes that really stand out from anything else in this era. It's really a treat to watch the Starchaser weave around gun turrets and blasting away the bad guys.
The rest of the animation is close to what you saw on movies like Rock and Rule and to a lesser extent Heavy Metal. Solid cel drawings with decent to good animation, but not Disney quality. The original film was in 3D, but there is no 3D here. Probably a good thing considering 3D DVD's aren't exactly popular. The movie more than makes up for the lack of 3D and non-Disney quality with a clever script and excellent voice cast. You'll find yourself loving one or more of the characters because of the voice talents and what they say.
Now it's been said that Starchaser is just a Star Wars rip-off, and if you look for it you will probably say that too. You have a young "out of touch with the modern world" hero with a sword that cuts through about anything, a wisecracking smuggler who is also captain of a starship (the Starchaser), a prissy comic foil in the ship's computer, and a villian with all the stereotypical profiles for a space opera villain (just like Darth Vader had). In all fairness Star Wars was a rip-off of the classic space operas from the old Saturday morning matinees so keep that in mind when passing judgement. Also most who make this judgement tend to not see the things that make this movie different from Star Wars, and there is enough to do so. It's not like comparing Fisful of Dollars with Yojimbo (which are practically identical movies). More like comparing Rocky with The Karate Kid (same themes, but different approach and story path).
Now that the DVD version is finally here you can get this movie in it's original widescreen format. The only copies you could have gotten in the past were full frame and were either on VHS tape or transferred from VHS tape. Now this DVD is a no frills deal. There is no remastering to clean up the picture so you will see a fair amount of dirt, which is to be expected for a long neglected title. The sound is actually pretty good and in true stereo, but it's not Dolby Digital. There are no special features that I have found. Not even a trailer. Oh well. At least we finally have it on DVD. And the price definitely makes it worth a look.
The movie is PG for violence and mild language (very mild by today's standards). I suppose the movie can be a tad too violent for the youngest of viewers, but if they can handle Star Wars there shouldn't be a problem. If you enjoy space opera this movie should suite you just fine. If you're into animated science fiction that's on the lighter side you should get a kick out this too. Personally I love it in spite of any shortcomings others might find.

(More customer reviews)For the latest episode in the Veggie series, we get a lesson on loving your family. They take two Biblical stories and use them to show the importance of taking care of your family over your own interests.
First up is "Baby Sitter in DeNile." Laura Carrot gets to play Miriam, who is upset at the attention her parents are playing to little brother Moses. And she really doesn't want to have to watch him. Will she change her mind? While I found the beginning of the segment a little confusing, I enjoyed this different take on the beginning of Moses' life.
The main feature is "Duke and the Great Pie War," a loose retelling of the story of Ruth set in a fairy tale kingdom. Can knight in training Duke Duke win the joust and the heart of Sweet Petunia? And will the fact that she's a Rubarbarian hurt his standing in his kingdom? This segment was hysterical with such puns are serf music and the names of the knights. And be sure to catch the question posed by the Abbott of Costello.
Sandwiched between these segments is "The Blues with Larry," the part of the show where Larry comes out and tries to sing the blues. Even help from special guest Blind Lemon Lincoln can't seem to get Larry sad enough to actually sing the blues.
Of course, if you're familiar with VeggieTales, you know what to expect on this DVD. Bonus features include the normal behind the scenes, audio commentary, family activities, games, karaoke, and more.
While the first segment was a little sub par, the rest of the DVD made up for it. This is yet another solid 45 minutes of family entertainment.

Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side Review

Honestly, it shouldn't matter if you are a fan of The Empire Strikes Back or not (I don't care much for A New Hope but loved the FG episode). Here is what you need to know: Is it funny? Sure, there are some laughs. Could it be better? I think so. Was it as funny as the last one? In my opinion, no.
Is it funny?-The fact that the episode had me laughing in the first few minutes was a good sign (the probe droid scene was probably my favorite scene in the episode). They do well to incorporate characters into funny yet familiar roles in the most random of times. You will laugh at this episode, so that should be worth something.
Could it be better?-Well...that is kind of my whole point here. There are so many missed opportunities in this episode to poke fun at Star Wars or other actors/actresses that are not taken advantage of. No Luke kissing Leia jokes...no Lando crossing his friends...no jokes about the Ugnaughts (pig people)...come on! Is it too predictable? Maybe...but it still deserves a shot. Besides the missed jokes, some parts were just not too funny, like the AT-AT jokes on Hoth.
Was it as funny as the last one?-I have my criticisms about Blue Harvest and they transfer over to this one too, but Blue Harvest just seemed to have the classic Family Guy humor to it whereas this one didn't.
In the end, I am glad they made this one, hopefully learned some lessons for when they make Return of the Jedi. If you are a Family Guy Fan, definitely buy it as it is worth seeing. Rewatch value is not as good as Blue Harvest, but still a worthwhile investment.
