Bugs & Daffy: Wartime Cartoons (1943) Review

(More customer reviews)This tape offers a selection of 11 of the many cartoons that Warner Studios churned out during the Second World War. For me, watching them was a trip down memory lane; though I wasn't alive back then, I remember watching many of these on the local children's television show as I was growing up. Even after all these years, these cartoons still have the ability to make me laugh.
Yet such a collection raises the usual questions about what was included and was left out. Some of the cartoons -- most notably "Draftee Daffy" and "Falling Hare" -- are virtually timeless and often appear on television today, while others -- such as "The Weakly Reporter" and "Russian Rhapsody" -- are interesting from a historical standpoint ("Fifth Column Mouse" was especially fascinating as a none-too-subtle fable about the failure of appeasement). But with a couple of them, their inclusion in a collection of World War II cartoons seemed a stretch. "Super Rabbit" had only a end-scene plug for enlisting in the military, while the link between "Little Red Riding Rabbit" and the war was even more tenuous -- a note seen for five seconds early in the cartoon.
What makes this an issue is what cartoons were excluded. Most immediately apparent was the exclusive focus on the war against Germany; none of the infamously racist anti-Japanese cartoons -- such as "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips" and "Tokio Jokio" -- appear in the collection. While undeniably offensive by today's standards, excluding them has the effect of distorting history; such racist portrayals were typical of how the Japanese were depicted throughout the conflict, and including them could have served as an important reminder of how we viewed our enemy during the war. Almost as glaring is the absence of the "Private Snafu" cartoons that Chuck Jones did with Theodore Geisel (the future Dr. Seuss), though they are now available seperately on DVD. These exclusions mar what is otherwise a uniquely enjoyable way of looking at how we depicted the Second World War.

PLUS fifteen other shorts yet to be announced! Although this is the last in the Golden Collection series don't despair; WB has many more on the way under different titles. My personal favorite is Punch Trunk about a miniature elephant that hitchiked in a bunch of bananas and wound up in the city and appeared virtually everywhere and blasted the skies with his tiny elephant noise, incl one man's bird bath!
Martian Through Georgia is fabulous about a lonely Martian who comes to earth searching for companionship and tries desperately to fit in but no matter what he does, people still see him as a monster and tell him to go home! Monster go home! Tearfully he does and finds love on his own planet.
Now Hear This is very surreal and is told with sound and picture a la Gerald Mc Boing Boing, just wonderful to see and hear.
Cannot WAIT until october! I already ordered it! God Bless Chuck Jones!

Bugs Bunny: Hare Extraordinaire (Looney Tunes Super Stars) Review

(More customer reviews)Warner has done something here that they never did with the Golden Collection DVDs, they CROPPED the picture of the 1954+ cartoons to make them look widescreen. The animators at Warner Brothers NEVER animated for wide screen until the 1980 revival. There are jokes missing because they are in the upper or lower portions of the picture which are not there now. Maybe these were shown at the theaters this way, but I want to see them the way the animators intended us to see them.
I have already contacted the powers that be at Warner Home Video to request a re-call and issue a proper un-cropped DVD of these classic cartoons.
This would have NEVER happened in the Golden Collection sets. Someone who does not know better must be in charge now!
This will be the LAST Looney Tunes DVD that I buy if this is going to be the new standard. Keep the old un-cropped Laserdiscs, a TRAVESTY has been committed here!
