The Powerpuff Girls - Boogie Frights (1998) Review

The Powerpuff Girls - Boogie Frights (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first of three in a series of detailed reviews from the videos comprising the Powerpuff 3-Pack. Video: Boogie Frights, and it is the best of all the Powerpuff collections.
The title episode is a take-off on the disco song, not the movie with Mark Wahlberg and Burt Reynolds. Pop culture references: disco music, Saturday Night Fever, and a funny one involving the Death Star battle in Star Wars:A New Hope. The Boogie Man hatches a sinister plot to plunge Townsville into eternal darkness, into one long disco party. One of the most precious scenes involve Blossom and Buttercup arguing about wanting to stay up late. In the middle of this, a large lump scooches thru the middle of the bed. A nervous Bubbles pops up, surrounded by her stuffed animals. Awww!! There's also a theme of confronting one's fear that comes up in the end. (Rating: 5)
"Slumbering With The Enemy" has the Powerpuff Girls inviting all the girls for a slumber party at their place. Guess who else shows up? A certain simian with blonde pigtailed hair and long dress called... Mojeesha! The girls keep an eye on "her" and time and again, embarrass themselves by interpreting "her" attempts to join in as acts of evil. But why is "she" here anyway? The montage of Mojeesha and the Girls in various costumes are great fun. (Rating: 5)
"Ice Sore" features Blossom's ice powers, which comes in handy during a real scorcher of a day. Blossom's tendency to trust authority, particularly the Professor's, and her guilt when her good intentions go wrong, are demonstrated here. Her powers cause some jealousy from her sisters, whose powers don't seem to equal something so useful. (Rating: 5)
The Shonen Knife video for "Buttercup" features clips from various episodes as well as a flurry of freeze frames of certain villains. Although primarily about Buttercup, it features the other girls as well. The song's snarling power-pop/punk rhythms match Buttercup's power punches to a tee. (Rating: 5)
One of the best stories in the series is "The Rowdyruff Boys", in which Mojo Jojo, after being foiled time and again by the Puffs, decides to create the antithesis of the Girls. Remember the old rhyme, "sugar, spice, and everything nice." What are little boys made of? How Mojo gets the ingredients are great. However, Mojo's substitute for Chemical X proves just as effective, and the three boys really beat the stuffing out of the Girls, making the Boys one of their most formidable adversaries. However, the way the Girls achieve their victory is one of the most creative solutions ever seen. (Rating: 5)
"Helter Shelter" is a unique episode in that there are no villains to be fought. Rather, the girls have to deal with Bubbles and her proclivity to bring back animals. Despite being lectured about this by the Professor, she outdoes herself by bringing home a baby-whale, which she places in the middle window of their room like the car at the Hard Rock Cafe. The frenzied scene where they frantically try to find a hiding place for the whale in the house is the funniest, as is the exchange: "The professor's gonna have a cow." Bubbles says: "NO! A baby whale!" Bubbles is clearly a champion for animals, a tried and true romantic. (Rating: 5)
A perfect 5 rating for the Girls all-around!

I love this DVD as I am quite the connoisseur of Halloween specials; I can't get enough of them! Hey Arnold's 'Arnold's Halloween' strikes the jackpot with its War of the Worlds inspired storyline; it's sufficiantly moody and fun. Rugrats' 'Curse of the Werewuff' is a new entry into Nick's Halloween canon and a welcome one at that. A show that has become too precious as of late, this stops before going to far with its own "cuteness". I still prefer thir original Halloween episode 'Candy Bar Creep Show', but 'Werewuff' is still highly enjoyable! The Fairly Odd Parent's 'Scary GodParents' is equally hip and funny and SpongeBob SquarePants' 'Scaredy Pants' is perfect. Only the strange inclusion of two non-Halloween related Rocket Power stories stops me forom giving this a five-star rating; they have a Halloween epsiode so why wasn't it included? Their two entires seem pointless and only one is anywhere near being holiday themed. With so many great Halloween epsiodes left off the DVD, one has to wonder at this choice.

The announcement of this bare bones, single disc has caused quite a stir in some fan communities..and apparently here on Amazon as well.
Here's the skinny: At the bottom of the press release for this single DVD, Lucasfilm clearly states a box set for Season 1 (with extras) is in the works, including Blu Ray. I have to give them credit for at least telling us up front that this DVD is not intended for the people that will want the whole season. Although I am not sure who the intended consumer is for this, I guess almost an hour and a half for $14 is enough to keep the little ones quiet in the back seat of the SUV and make it so you don't have to worry about losing a disc from your box set.
For releasing a no frills single DVD: 1/5
For content: 3.5/5
For telling me to wait a few months for a season box set: 5/5

The "Clone Wars" goes back to the original Star Wars film when Obi-Wan Kenobi tells Luke Skywalker that he was once a Jedi knight the same as your father and that they fought together in the Clone Wars. Since that moment fans have been obsessed with what the clone wars were. This new TV series takes place immediately after the events of Star Wars-Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The series follows Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker and introduces us to some new characters such as Ahsoka Tano a girl Jedi knight as well as characters we already know.

As if volume 1 containing four episodes wasn't a big enough insult to fans, now comes vol. 2 with only four more episodes. These episodes aren't even in anamorphic widescreen! Do not waste your money on this release; wait for the full season 1 box set which will probably be out for the holiday season this year.

I watched this DVD today and laughed as much or more as the first time I saw this show on Adult Swim. This DVD has a number of features to recommend it:
- Two hours of extra features, including deleted scenes, commentary, animation meeting, panel presentations, alternate audio and more.
- Terrific presentation of the original show. It even sounds as though the music to dialogue level has been adjusted on the "Empire On Ice" sketch so that the hilarious lyrics to the songs are much more audible and clear than they were when originally shown on TV.
At less than $10, this DVD is absolutely worth it. A great entertainment value for the price. Even the blurbs on the back of the DVD case are entertaining.

Star Wars: Clone Wars, Vol. 1 (Microseries) (2003) Review

Star Wars: Clone Wars, Vol. 1 (Microseries) (2003)
Average Reviews:

Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky of Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack fame, this series of 20, 3 minute shorts was created to bridge the gap in story between Episodes 2 and 3 of the Star Wars prequels. This is vol. 1 of a 2 vol. series; the second will be in a slightly different format (15 minute episodes) and will animate the opening scrawling text of Episode 3. These shorts, though brief, are a lot closer to what the fans have expected out of the prequel films but haven't gotten. There is a lot of action and the characters, for the most part, are much better realized than in the films. In fact, there is more character development in just the one 4 second scene between Anakin and Amadala in this series then there is in the entire second Star Wars prequel. Lucas gave Tartakovsky reign to tell original stories for this series and he has chosen to focus on the various Jedi and their skills, something the films generally lack. Once again, we learn more about Mace Windu and the entire order of the Jedi through these 3-minute shorts than we do in the hours of Prequel footage released so far. What's really nice about this DVD is that the shorts have been edited into one 69-minute feature that helps keep the story much tighter than when they aired on the cartoon network, broken up into 3-minute chunks. The extras are nice as well, though just as short as the original cartoons were. All in all, between this volume and the next currently in production, I think these cartoons will eventually find their way to becoming part of the Star Wars film series and not just a diversion from it.

Don't bad on me for posting a review before the product is released. Amazon is so bad at informing of bonus features I thought some might want to know what this Blu-Ray (or DVD) set will include.
This is from the press release (which also notes the release date as 3 Nov.):
Star Wars: The Clone Wars The Complete Season One is presented in widescreen with English, Spanish and French 5.1 DTS audio and English, French and Spanish subtitles.
Bonus features include:
* Seven Director's Cut Episodes: Rising Malevolence, Shadow of Malevolence, Lair of Grievous, Rookies, Storm Over Ryloth, Innocents of Ryloth and Liberty on Ryloth
* 22 Episodic Featurettes that go behind-the-scenes with Supervising Director Dave Filoni and crew about the making-of each episode
* Spectacular 64-page production journal that includes early sketches, artist notes, and concept art from each episode from Season One
* Blu-ray Exclusive -- The Jedi Temple Archives: An extensive database exploring test footage, early concept art, 3-D character and object turnarounds and early animation. The Archives is a rare look at the assets in various stages of creation for The Clone Wars, with a wealth of surprises and never-before seen moments sprinkled throughout.
UPDATE: Now I have the set and can add that the disks are Region Free (I play them on my European BD player) and are encased in a book cover with a 62-page book. The front flap holds disk 1 and the back flap holds disks 2 and 3. The book is 64 pages (including front and back cover) of amazing artwork and behind-the-scenes pictures, scans, script pages, info, background, character drafts, etc for the entire first season. I hope some body uploads some scans or photos to the product page so you can see the detail. It is excellent! I can't believe they included so much in this set for such a low price.
The packaging is well done allowing disk removal without scratching. Each disk holds 7 or 8 episodes, which run back-to-back as one long movie (however with the "Clone Wars" logo and news real preceding each).
The bonus features are similar to Seinfeld's "Inside Look" features where each episode is dissected - in this case mostly by director Dave Filoni with an occasional guest - either a writer or producer. There aren't picture-in-picture tracks, everything is done as stand-alone featurettes - one for each episode. There are hidden content within each featurette where you can hit the "enter" key on your remote at certain cued times to go into an animatic or design sketch, and then back where you left off.
The "Directors Cut" episodes aren't noticeably longer and scarcely different from the aired versions. I noticed a few seconds added here and there, mostly to action sequences (space battles, saber battles, etc). I doubt the casual viewer will notice any difference at all. The quality of both audio and video is exactly as I hoped - top notch!
Regardless: I can't recommend this set highly enough! It's such an amazing steal at this price and has a much bettter packaging than ROME or Battlestar Galactica which pretty much pissed me off! (You can't remove the disks in either of those box sets without scratching them since they are encased in cardboard sleeves with very shoddy casing!)
Aside: In a commentary for the last episode (featuring bounty hunters and a new character named "Cad Bane") director Filoni reveals that Zero the Hutt will be back in season two for a run of episodes and that we'll see more of the Hutts throughout the Cone Wars!

-----------------------------------------EPISODES' REVIEW------------------------------------------
When a show says its pushing for 5 seasons, you generally tend to get very nervous, especially since an entire 1st season and a motion picture tanked your expectations, being "mediocre" at best. But now this new DVD release has really swept me off my feet! Star Wars never looked so good on TV! The acting is superb (with a few exceptions I'll roll out later), the story is never bland (although it suffers from unbelievably goofy premises) and each and every episode is able to hold the other up by its caliber in brilliance! It literally shoots the standards of the upcoming seasons by light-years!
The animation has made great strives and Season 2 is not shy when it comes to proving itself. The character models themselves interact with the environment, climate and other characters much more realistically. I can't even think of any particular technical hiccup off the top of my head -- not one -- from this season, which is a huge plus, in my opinion.
One technical issue I know the Clone Wars is suffering from though is that they haven't perfected the art of RAIN! I can't think of a single episode with a grey cloud in the sky, which is pretty unrealistic if you ask me. Its not a huge complaint, just a technical obstacle I'd like to see this show overcome.
The character's models could be as fantastic as they please: the characters 'themselves', however, could definitely use some tweaking. In a time-block of half an hour (22 minutes excluding commercial breaks), if amazing what both Seasons have been able to pull off. Sometimes the acting sounds forced, though, and dialogue is painfully rushed (I'm looking at you, Ahsoka and Anakin!). On the plus side, the voices fit well with the character's and their established personalities (with the exception of Grievous, who is just a miserable mess of inconsistency).
The story is outstanding, even for its constrained time-frame. Every episode acts and feels like it'd be at home playing on any big-screen cinema (which is, ironically, the exact opposite of how I felt about the feature-length film). The episodes' tone has gotten rather darker even, which I think compliments the kid's intelligence and the older viewer for watching a "kid's show" as well.
There's really not much else to say except the lack of legitimate villains. Count Dooku, General Grievous and Asajj Ventress get little to no action whatsoever(with the exception of Grievous getting his own 2 episode story arc... which was VERY disappointing). Some new adversaries are introduced, but they never really go anywhere (Cad Bane and Captain Honoka are the only exceptions) Instead, mercenaries, bounty hunters and even giant Godzilla wanna-bes get jammed into the show and really takes a lot away from the "Clone Wars"!!!
I understand that the Clone Wars can't shove battle droid and clone trooper clash in our face every episode, but it'd be a nice change of pace. Season 2 covered every genre you could think of: monster movie, murder mystery, kidnapping, extortion, revenge (the list goes on!), but the show needs to understand that it can't tread too far from its element.
------------------------------------------DVD'S REVIEW---------------------------------------------
Like the last season's collection, Season 2 offered 4 discs containing the 22 episodes and a very neat book that contains concept art relating to the season. The disc offers different language options and precise subtitles too (you know, the basics). Unfortunately, one REALLY disappointing thing about the package is its presentation and its lack of bonus material.
Last Season's DVD boxset offered interesting featurettes for every episode, explaining production, technical difficulties, etc. Instead, Season 2 has a new tab on its 'bland' menu labeled "Bonus Material" where you're lucky if you at least find ONE episode autopsy (there is also trailers for Star Wars games and other media, but they hardly count as worthy material). Season 1's 'main menu' even looks more impressive than Season 2's: Season 1 has a montage of clips from its episodes on each disc, where as Season 2 only has a still picture of Yoda on each disc ("Very disappointing, this is!")
Could it really have been that hard to stuff everything into those discs? Maybe the episodes' technical superiority made it relevant to take out good portions of bonus material, but that's no excuse: they could have just simply put another disc in the set dedicated to bonus material and be done with it! And its not like they weren't ever produced: even "StarWars.com" still has them in its video library, and its been -- what -- half-a-year, at most? To be honest, I smell a marketing tool to get Average Joes to get Blu-rays (which I assume are PACKED with bonus material) and with my limited budget, I guess I'll just have to stick to my guns and complain some more.
----------------------------------------------OVERALL----------------------------------------------
To write a lengthy review, it definitely required me to do extensive nit-picking. I still think, even with the few complaints I have, its a worthy buy. If you are willing to cough-up the extra bucks for Blu-Ray, you'll find a complete half of this review to be irrelevant. The episodes themselves are worth the buy, regardless of package and presentation.
I see Season 2 as the forerunner... and the seasons that follow it will be as marvelous, if not greater, than the last.
