Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi (1983) Review

Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi (1983)

Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi is a great documentary on the behind the scenes processes used to make the creatures & monsters in Return of the Jedi. I am amazed this wasn't put in as an bonus feature on the DVD versions of the film. If you enjoy learning about Phil Tippet and pre-CG special effects, this is a great watch.

DO NOT BELIEVE THE REVIEWS!!! I BOUGHT THIS MOVIE STRICTLY OFF THE REVIEWS, AND I TRULY WISH I HAD NOT.
I am a Star Wars nut. I now realize that I'm not a nut of watching Star Wars lunatics. I thought this would be an interesting glimpse into another aspect of the Star Wars realm, one that's not heavily documented elsewhere. However I was unbelievably disappointed to find out that this was nothing more than a documentary of several people in the months, weeks, and days ahead of Episode 1, with 90% of it devoted to the people waiting in line. If you think standing in line is boring, you should see how agonizing it is to watch people waiting in line, especially over a period of months. This movie has no spark, no inspiration, and no appeal whatsoever...and I'll watch anything Star Wars. This film was basically the equivalent of a news program, where they stand outside a movie theater and ask people as they're waiting or as they're leaving what they think.
Don't buy this movie, don't rent this movie, don't even watch it at a friend's house. It's not even worth 5 minutes of your time, let alone the whole film.

On April 7th, 1999, lines formed at the Mann's Village and Chinese theaters to see the first Star Wars film in 16 years. Filmmaker Dennis Przywara actually stood in line for 42 days to capture the frenzy caused by the release of Star Wars Episode I! True fans clashed over those dramatic weeks as a rivalry ignited between the lines. Meet the fans behind the phenomenon from a Bob Fett musician, a woman who drives an X-Wing automobile, fans crashing Skywalker Ranch, to a high school production of Star Wars the Musical. Starwoids goes beyond the hype to reveal the fandom, the frenzy, and the pursuit to see the most anticipated film in cinema history.

Race (2007) Review

The story is decent but not that special. The racing and the ships used are a bit to close to "Star Wars the Phantom Menice" but the intregue involved in the story helped bring it up to a better level. The voice acting was mid ranged in quality but the animation was not that great at all. It seemed like the film makers just used an old video game animation platform. Personally, I think it would be better if it where either hand drawn animation or used a better computer animation platform. I found it a little destracting from the story at first but if you dont stare a the charactors to closely it is easy to get past the poorer quality animation. All in all it is a decent movie compaired to a lot of the dreck that is released these days but it is not on the cutting edge of animation even for 2007.

Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures (2008) Review

Spaceballs: The Totally Warped Animated Adventures (2008)

Mel Brooks Spaceballs is in the top 5, if not my favorite movie of all time. So it would only be natural that I would want to get this DVD of the new toon series. Judging from reading about the show being canceled, and a few reviewers saying how bad it was when they saw it on T.V (Which i never got to do) I really was not expecting much at all when I surprisingly got confirmation that this DVD had been shipped (they had canceled it previously, but it's back again now)
It's a shame there is only 4 episodes. The 4 episodes are not exactly faithful to what you know about Spaceballs, but that does not mean they should be dismissed, as I laughed all the way through each episode. There is a couple of times you get a little disorientated wondering why Lonestar and Princess Vespa are not married, or why Sanders and Helmet would call for Lonestars help... but aside from that, Mel could have had a successful series here, had it been given a chance to get some of the kinks out like most first series do... but oh well, what can you do about it now?
Mel returns as the voice of President Skroob and Yogurt, as with Daphene Whats-her-name as Vespa & Joan Rivers as Dot Matrix.... the rest of the characters voices you can get used to, except for Cornell Sanders voice, that one really needed to be re-cast.
Surprisingly the humor was not censured out. I was expected a completely G rated cartoon here, but it's more a PG rated one that pushes the boundary of it. I was surprised at the sexual innuendos and language portrayed, which just made me like it. Had they gone a little bit more raunchier and smuttier, it could have contended with South Park and such shows.
As long as you go in not expecting a masterpeice, then you should enjoy what this show has to offer. Just sit back and remember, it's just for laughs.
Shame there is no bonus features at all :(

I love the film so it was a no-brainer to get it for the store, and my slight disappointment is offset with showing what a high storage capacity can do for this product.
The package comes with both the BD and the standard def discs and included are all of the special features we know from the 2005 release. So what's changed? Nothing except for the languages: Dubbed in DTS for six languages (including Castilian, German, Italian and French) and Mono or Dolby for three others, and subtitled in nine languages (incl. Danish, Swedish and Norwegian). None of the supplements have been upgraded but that DTS always sounds awesome during the main feature. The picture has not been cleaned up from the transfer so there is plenty of artifact, hair and random film discolorations. I enjoyed watching some of the same special features again, including the John Candy memorial and the Mel Brooks conversation. The ludiricous speed is just as lame as before.
The menu is a killer if your player is not tuned up (or older). It becomes painful when trying to watch those flubs sequences as there is no play all option. It is Spaceballs, it is Mel Brooks - so it makes it a worthwhile purchase if you did not already upgrade a few years ago to that special edition DVD (especially with both included here). I would normally rate this lower but there is so much here I had to go up one.

My issue with this dvd is that it has some odd moments in the interviews where certain events seem mixed up and confused. I wish that the stories that each person trys to describe were pieced together better. By the way, this documentary is all interviews and no clips or archive footgae from any of the feuds. The beef dvds are by far better constructed and more planned out than war on wax ( I beleive thats why this dvd didn't make a continuation, because there were a lot of feuds that went uncovered). But I have to admit that the DMC interview and DJ Red Alert interview were by far the best of the entire dvd.
I wish there existed a documentary purely on the east vs west coast feuds.

This movie came out in Japan within a year of "Star Wars" release in '78 and was released throughout the U.S. shortly thereafter and on television shortly AFTER THAT. I've read it was made into a tv series in Europe. There are so many familiar elements - spacehips, robots, space pirates, spunky princesses in distress - all elements well known to Star Wars fans, just done the Japanese way. Story? I don't remember the story and I don't care - something about finding these seeds. The main thing is just seeing how "Star Wars" was mainlined into this production and how it's stylistically translated. It's neat to watch this and think how Lucas might've done his epic if he couldn't have got a movie deal in the U.S. and instead went to Japan and made it. That's the fun of it, and nothing else did it like this. There were a number of things that came out on tv and in the movies right after Star Wars, from Saturday morning kid shows like "Jason of Star Command" primetime stuff like the original "Battlestar Galactica" and movies like "Battle Beyond the Stars", all of which tried to capture the fire started by "Star Wars". "Message From Space" is one from that period that has eluded release for all this time and it's GREAT to see it finally out there in a quality form. One question - Where is it Amazon? Are you just takin' orders to see what the demand is before they press any copies and fill any of them. Is this REALLY available? I'm planning to keep my order in place until it is. As a movie that measures the impact of Star Wars in the late 70's, this is one I don't want to get away from my collection.
(Update 4/20/10: Yay! It's finally, now in stock! A-ma-zon!)

George Lucas in Love (1997) Review

George Lucas in Love (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Several reviewers around here really seem to want a lot from a 9 minute film.
'George Lucas In Love' was a very fun short. From Lucas' roommate Benji talking about an 'all powerful force' to his friends Hal & Chuck working on Hal's 'fastest thing on campus' to a professor whose speech patterns resembled a well known Jedi Master, this film has a heck of a lot crammed into it's 9 minutes. If anything, the filmmakers should have done a 15-20 minute film! The film was very clever and enjoyable. Maybe just a tad bit funnier than 'Hardware Wars'.
The music, cinematography, and acting are all very good, indeed. Anyone who didn't enjoy this at least a little really needs to get a sense of humor. Of course, it's a bit cheesy, but it's meant to be that way. It's presented in the slightly corny, overblown way that 'Hardware Wars' or the 'Naked Gun' films were. The same people who didn't understand those films probably won't understand 'George Lucas In Love'. It's not a 'great' film, but who cares? It's a fun little short by a guy who really loves 'Star Wars'. Some have condemned the filmmakers doing this just for the money. I seriously doubt that Mr. Nussbaum will make a huge fortune from this film and if he does, big deal. Nothing wrong with making money from doing what you love or making money at all. Surely, none of the people who reviewed this film would go and work at their jobs for free and live in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere! Anyway, GLIL is great fun and a great to watch before your next screening of 'Phantom Menace' or the original trilogy.

As the invaders’ spaceships quickly defeat the world’s armies and destroy New York, Moscow, Paris, and London, a United Nations Space Bureau team led by Professor Takigawa manages to finish construction of Earth’s last line of defense, the space battleship Gohten. While en route to Venus, an alien manages to sneak aboard the ship and kidnap Takigawa’s daughter Jun. R2-D2: Beneath the Dome (2001) Review

R2-D2: Beneath the Dome (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For starters, Amazon has got the title of this DVD wrong. It's actually entitled R2-D2 BENEATH THE DOME. R2-D2 BENEATH THE DOME is the mockumentary about the life of R2-D2 distributed by Fox with the complete blessings of George Lucas. The short originally was broadcast on Fox about two months before the release of ATTACK OF THE CLONES in 2002. The mockumentary follows R2's life as a droid on the fast lane, his pride and addictions, his downfall, and the eventually comeback because of the the 2nd Star Wars trilogy. There are a ton of "interviews" in this mockumentary including those with George Lucas, Samuel L. Jackson, Stephen Spielberg, Richard Dreyfuss, and Natalie Portman. I was amazed that they were able to get all the stars interviewed for this thing to work together and collaborate. The best part of the short in my opinion: Dreyfuss' anger, frustration, and angst with R2 and how it led to the break down of their friendship. This is a great item that most Star Wars fans will enjoy watching and adding to their collections.

The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) Review

The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let my preface my review by saying that I actually do remember watching this as a wee lad back in 1978 and loving it. Specifically, I remember that Han was trying to get Chewie home for Xmas (well, Life Day - what ever the hell that is) and that Chewie's tree-house dwelling family were "captured" by storm troopers. I also remember all the major characters being in it (except of course Governor Tarkin and Ben Kenobi who bought the farm in the movie). Call it selective memory, but I LUCKILY didn't remember anything beyond this! Seeing that I have/had found childhood memories of this special, I was curious to see how it would play almost 30 years later. Boy, was I surprised...
It starts off OK. Our heroes, Han & Chewie are in the Falcon fleeing 2 imperial star destroyers (déjà vu?). The cockpit is the cheaped out TV version and actual movie footage of the space ships are used but no big deal. At this point, I'm just amazed that Harrison Ford agreed to this! Obviously, Stardom had not hit yet. And then Boo-yah! They jump to hyper space and all is well. Then the open credits role and announces the cast and "special guests": Bea Arthur (what?), Harvey Corman (are you serious?), Art Carney (Norton in a galaxy far far away?), Dianne Carroll (who?) and the Jefferson Starship (no!!!!!!!!). At this point, I'm thinking so far so good - maybe it won't be as bad as they say it is...............WRONG.
Back from commercial break, we go to the first scene at Chewie's tree house. We are introduced to Chewie's family, wife = Mala, his cute yet annoying as hell son Lumpy (very creative name!) and lumpy's perverted grandpa Itchy (OK, heads need to roll for this!). Now begins the 15 plus minutes of pure torture - grunting wookies playing house! Just when you think it can't get any worse Lumpy The Whiney goes for an electronic gadget. Now we have to suffer through 10 minutes of Circus Solei type non-sense with jesters, jugglers and dancers. BIZARRO WORLD times 100! Note: whenever one of Chewie's family members go for an electronic gadget or gizmo, prepare to suffer. Also note: have the remote ready to fast forward through the things that are so bad, you will get nightmares if you watch them. Worth noting is the fact that after viewing this part of the show I got up and made myself a nice bourbon on the rocks. Take that for what it's worth...............
After the viewer survives what just happened, I believe we are introduced the Art Carney the Space Trader. I think he sells a nail clipper or something to a grumpy Imperial Officer. It seems "Norton" is close to Chewie's family but more importantly, plays the comic relief role in the special. He pops up a few more times in the next hour plus and frankly, he annoyed me the least out of all the Special Guests. Call me crazy, but I kind of liked Art Carney in this role! He was given crap to work with and gave 110% effort. I loved the beer gut and the bi-focals too! CLASSIC.
Next we go back to more annoying Wookie shenanigans. This time Itchy, who obviously got hit with the ugly stick, heads for an electronic gadget. NOOOO!!!!!!!! This is where it gets really interesting. Itchy attaches himself to this dream machine where your imagination runs wild. In comes the sensual Diane Carroll as what I can only describe as a call girl in space. It's borderline pornographic here. Itchy is making noises that one should not hear on Network Television! Soft core wookie porn is not my thing. I actually got a kick out this part until she started to sing a never -ending song. Time to hit the fast forward button again........................
I think at this point Chewie's family gets a video call from Princess Leia and C3p0 looking for Han & Chewie. Relatively speaking, not a horrible scene really but Carrie Fisher has a mischievous look in here eyes (i.e coked off her gord no doubt).
Next, Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 check in via video to check on Han & Chewie's progress. SHOCKING MOMENT! Mark Hamill is almost unrecognizable! I'm guessing that this is one of his first appearances after that horrific car crash. His eyes look weird and small and his nose, well rumor had it that he actually lost his nose in that accident (although never really confirmed). Very disheartening actually. He appears to be on pain killers or something too. And the make-up - it's caked on big time covering huge scars I suppose. So sad but interesting to see none the less.
OK, let's talk about Harvey Corman, funny man from the Carol Burnett show. Not funny whatsoever. In fact, every second of time he got was annoying and pointless. He gets the award for "#1 Show Wrecker" along with whoever wrote the crappy story! Save yourself and fast forward thru every scene he is in! Trust me............
I think at this point in the show, two imperial storm troopers and an imperial general come a knocking looking for rebels and what not. They start harassing the wookies and trashing the place. They even trash poor little Lumpy's room to bits (even his new toy!). For some reason the scene where the stormtrooper trashed lumpy's room and toys sticks with me to this day. This is probably where my feelings for the Empire went from dislike to hate. Kudos to the guy that played the imperial general, he did a good job portraying a bad guy. I was hoping he would order the storm troopers to shoot either Lumpy or Itchy (or both).
Finally, we get something cool. The cartoon that features our heroes and BOBA FETT. You think that Boba may be a nice guy after all but in the end, we find out what side he is really on. Pretty cool. Probably the best part of the special next to seeing Luke, Leia and Han act like idiots.
Next we go to Tatooine and the bar in Mos Eisley! SO COOL. All of the original characters are there: wolf-man dude , hammer head, the white bear thingee with one tooth, the dude that didn't like Luke, the band, the vampire guy etc etc. In comes Bea Arthur as the bartender. Real corny and stuff but when her ex-boyfriend, Harvey Corman the space alien, comes in you get the worst bit of television in the history of television. FAST FORWARD NOW! Corman leaves and you think the worst is over. Wrong again! Bea Arthur has to sing and dnace around with the alines. WHY GOD, WHY? Cut 10-15 minutes out of this scene and just have Bea offering a free last round of drinks and we are good to go.
To make a long review short, Han & Chewie show up and save the day. Han throws a storm trooper out of the tree house and all is well. Han and Chewie embrace (real big hug - very curious???) and we get on with the queer Life Day celebration. Anyway, we now have out heroes (han, leia, luke, R2, 3PO and Chewie back together again and here is when the show really shines. The whole Life Day celebration is friggin ridiculous but the best part is when Princess Leia sings the Life Day song to the theme of Star Wars. HILARIOUS & CLASSIC TV MOMENT!
In conclusion, there' so much wrong with this special that I really could go on for hours about it. It easily could have been cut down to 30 minutes (by cutting an hour plus of needless crap) and been a good little show for kids. Really, the writers should be tarred and feathered for this pathetic effort. Also, Lucas needs to take some blame here. It's his franchise - He let them use his stars, his characters, clips from his movie, theme music from his movie, sound effects from his movie etc. Without a doubt, Lucas learned his lesson after this fiasco. Oh, I forgot to mention Jefferson Starship because they suck and I fast forwarded thru that part..............
Was it worth seeing? Hell ya. At least for nostalgia purposes. Now I know why Lucas wants to find and destroy every copy of this show!

Admitting my bias, I am a big Star Wars fan and had been anxiously waiting the movie release since seeing a preview at ComicCon. The movie did not disappoint and had the family (boys at least) laughing harder than anything else I can remember. Some of the jokes are mature and maybe too vulgar for some. The number of inside references and "for fans only" jokes makes it fun. The guest appearances by Star Wars legends also adds to the experience. The best part is the humor is in support of a story beyond a throw away comedy with a compelling conclusion.

Star Wars - The Dark Redemption (An Underground Star Wars Sequal)
Average Reviews:

Dark Redemption is a cult favorite based in the Star Wars world, an underground hit made by fans with a professional crew and equipment. The costumes are good as the fan world has plenty of authentic looking costumes already. The props likewise all look authentic. Set 2 days before Star Wars: A New Hope, this adventure takes place on Kessel as jedi Knight Mara Jade has been imprisioned by the Imperial forces. She has the plans for the Death Star that become the focus of the next chapter.A fun movie, the case for the tape or DVDs look like a blackmarket film, as these are made in small batches. Lots of fun for the Star Wars fan.

Okay. I couldn't resist. I was walking up the DVD aisle in the local Target the other day and I saw this DVD for $2.99. I said to myself, "You've got to be kidding me. How did this movie ever get marketed?" But, I soon found myself, copy in hand, waiting in the checkout line.
Upon playing the movie, I was worried. It took quite a while to get introduced to all of the "important players" in the line and, for the first half hour, I was pretty bored and didn't think I would make it all the way through. But then, as time rolled on, I found myself getting absorbed in the lives of these people who had travelled to Hollywood in order to stand in line for six weeks. There is plenty of drama in this reality-based movie, as the people get pretty frazzled by each other after being in a closed space for weeks on end with one another.
Some of the characters are funny, some are laid back, and some are real jerks. It is hard to watch a film that tends to focus on the jerks, lovingly following them around to pick up on the random rants and tantrums they throw about various issues. You just end up wondering what these guys problem is. But fortunately, there is other content in the film to make up for these tense moments.
In conclusion, I'm not sure why I found STAR WAIT interesting. One sort of wishes to follow up on these folks and see where they are and the included "sequel" to the film is not enough. It seems sad that the energy is gone, even if these individuals are a bit geeky and can spend six weeks of their lives waiting on a street corner. If you are a Star Wars fan, you should get the movie. If you are a fan of reality tv and documentaries, you will also find it strangely entertaining. And hey, for under five dollars, you can't go wrong.
