The Perfect Weapon (1991) Review

(More customer reviews)Desperately needing and deserving a dvd release, The Perfect Weapon takes itself pretty seriously, and is one of the highest quality B movies I have seen. Jeff Speakmen is a rare martial arts gem, appearing in only a few films, with this arguably being his best. The cast is pretty good, combining several familiar faces from various martial arts films. The story is about justice/revenge, but unlike most martial arts films, it is explored with more intrigue. The action, though not very plentiful, is top notch. The Perfect Weapon is one of the only movies I know of that also shows off the beautiful martial art, Kenpo.
The movie begins with a beautiful introduction of Kenpo, showcased by Speakman to the song "I've got the power". Though a cheesy scene, it really is beautiful. Following this are some flashbacks to Jeff's (Jeff Speakman's charcater name) childhood and development of Kenpo skills. In the present, Jeff's mentor Kim Kwan, is murdered by the Korean mafia, and thus the journey to find the killer begins. Interesting enough, we get to see the killer, but not the man who ordered the kill until much later.
The action, again is superb, and if there was more of it I'd give this 5 stars. There are 2 fight scenes that really stick out. First is early on in a gym, where Jeff takes on 3 men at once, one being played by James Lew (also appeared in Balance of Power, American Ninja 5, and several other martial arts films). The scene lasts a few minutes, but is exceptionally well done. The last is the final fight of the movi. Jeff takes on the huge bodyguard "Tanaka". The fight lasts about 3 minutes, and unfortunately, doesn't show off too much skills since Tanaka is just too big for flashy martial arts. There is also a decent car chase scene in the movie, which is much better than most poorly executed chase scenes in B movies.
Overall, The Perfect Weapon is one of the best B movies ever made. Everything is on the money. Unlike most martial arts B movies, there is not an over-abundance of action. Though I do prefer that, this movie makes up for it with more of an effort in all the other areas.

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (Snap Case) (1995) Review

(More customer reviews)Most movie sequels I've seen were bad remakes of the original. But UNDER SIEGE 2: DARK TERRITORY delivers some excitment, holding your attention.
Steven Seagal reprises his rule as the Navy cook/martial arts champion serving knuckle sandwiches to hijackers who take over a train. Seagal's in top John Wayne form, speaking slowly and softly and not saying too much. And as in the first film, he's at times funny, with one wisecrack you won't forget. ...
Eric Bogosian adds flavor as a slimey villain, another reason UNDER SIEGE 2 rises above the average sequel. Bogosian matches the high-energy performance he gave several years ago in the movie TALK RADIO.
Is it a Hollywood law to cast women as only sex objects or victims? Katherine Heigl fills the role of the latter in UNDER SIEGE 2. Despite her good looks, she plays Steven Seagal's niece - not his love interest. I suppose that's something you would not predict. But sure enough, the villains capture Ms. Heigl and it's up to Uncle Steve to save her pretty little head.
See UNDER SIEGE 2: DARK TERRITORY. It's a cut above both action flicks and sequels.

Fire Down Below (1997) Review

(More customer reviews)Good story line, excellent casting, action but not brutal like some of Segal's other movies, good music, some comedy, and even a love story. What more could you ask for? Makes for a very relaxing evening. Our whole family enjoyed it right down to the six year old who has watched it several times. By the way, your first person on this site who gave a review did not see the picture as Steven Segal did not sing in it but did play the guitar and rather well. If you are going to accept reviews they should at least see the movie rather than trying to be funny at someone else's expense.

Delta Force 2 - Operation Stranglehold (1990) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie hit me like a gut-punch! I expected a cheesy Rambo rip-off, but this was one of the greatest action movies ever! Ramon Cota is even more threatening than Hans Gruber from "Die Hard!" Hats off to Chuck Norris and Billy Drago. The fight choreography makes more recent action movies look like a Riverdance routine. I swear Chuck actually hit some guys making this movie!
Do not forget to watch the "training circle" scene with DVD slow-motion.
My only complaint was that the DVD wasn't letterboxed. A movie this good deserves a better presentation.

King Boxer Review

(More customer reviews)The 1971 film with the title "King Boxer" was the first Kung Fu film on general release in the UK and was first featured on the leading BBC TV show about the cinema. It was the start of the popularisation of the Kung Fu film genre in the UK.
This DVD was published in 1979 according to the cover. Be warned!

SPEND YOUR MONEY ON ONE OF HIS OTHER BRILLIANT FILMS.I bought this after seeing "once upon a time in china"! Go buy that instead or just about any of his other films after 1990!

Black Brigade (1970) Review

(More customer reviews)(...)That alone is scary-- I knew it might stink, but with the cast list, I thought it might actually be OK, and it is. It's a HORRID DVD transfer though, but for 1 dollar I can't complain too much!
It's what I thought it was, a TV movie (originally aired on ABC) from 1969 written by TV mogul Aaron Spelling and Produced by the great Danny Thomas Productions, who produced such classic TV shows as The Dick Van Dyke Show, That Girl, The Andy Griffith Show, etc,.
This film stars Stephen Boyd, a great character actor/leading man known for his roles in such movies as 'Ben Hur' and 'Fantatstic Voyage'.
It features young newcomers such as Richard Pryor and Billy Dee Williams & football star Rosie Grier in great supporting roles as members of an all-black WW II US Army company ('B' Company) in France who are doing the 'grunt' work of the Army. Digging latrines, digging graves, dealing with garbage, etc. Basically getting No Respect. Blacks were considered second class citizens during WW II.
The story shows how Racist Redneck Major Carter (Boyd) is asked to go on a dangerous mission to blow up a Dam held by the Nazis and the only company of men to help accomplish the task are 'B' Company, (the all black company).
They appear lazy and shiftless to Major Carter, who doesn't believe they can help him blow up the dam. Little does he know, they are more than up for the job. Carter asks their lieutenant in charge for 'volunteers', and he picks 6 men, including Pryor, Williams & Grier.
It's fairly standard TV movie fare, and it's kind of neat to see Pryor and Williams in early roles, as well as great black character actors Moses Gunn & Glynn Thurman (Cooley High)--as well as Susan Oliver, a great blonde character actress who appeared in lots of TV drama in the 60's on shows like 'Star Trek', 'Mannix', 'The Wild Wild West',etc.
It's a nice forgotten addition to black cinema, and shows that black men in WWII could be just as heroic as their white brothers. It's an interesting look at race relations in the late 60's context too, what with the Black Panther movement and all.
It's kind of funny how all the black actors have big afros and a few have mustaches/goatees--not typical of WWII U.S.Army standards, but more like1969 fashion. Pryor sports a natty red beret throughout the whole story, too.
I guess I recommend it as a piece of nostalgia. Again, The DVD transfer is Horrid, but viewable.

The Water Margin (1973) Review

(More customer reviews)This film is a brief out take from the Chinese classic Outlaws of the Marsh, reprotedly carried by Chairman Mao throughout his heroic stuggles against fascism. The original story was written in the 14th Century and has been an onging source of inspiration to Chinese literary creativity ever since. The Original story has so many sub plots and charaters that I think it might classify as the first soap opera, and even in this highly slimmed-down version, is top heavy with individual characters that are either insufficiently developed or not developed at all. But If you are familiar with the original story, this won't be a problem. If you aren't, it will be confusing, but, I think, if you like the martial arts-swordsman-knightly honor genre, or just plain action, I think that won't be a barrier. The sound track is funny, reminding me of Sergio Leone and his Clint Eastwood movies. It is a very enjoyable movie to those not cloned from the Hollywood short-attention span generation. If you are a boingo, this movie will seem very confusing.
