24. Wall of Sound
Lois and Clark vie for a coveted journalism award, while each races to be the first to track down the menacing Sound Man, a high-tech madman whose misuse of sonic vibrations brings Superman to his knees.
25. The Source
An electronics-firm whistle-blower leaks information to Lois about faulty parts, implicating his whiz-kid boss. Then reports of her source's murder surface. Tim Grimm (Reasonable Doubts) and Peter Scolari (Bosom Buddies) guest star.
26. The Prankster
A romeo with a warped sense of humor is out to even the score with Lois for sending him to prison years ago. Bronson Pinchot (Perfect Strangers) guest stars.
27. Church of Metropolis
An international gang equipped with smart bombs infiltrates the South Side, where Lois's uncle runs a cafe that's targeted by thugs trying to drive him out of business. Peter Boyle (Everybody Loves Raymond), Farrah Forke (Wings), Dick Miller (Gremlins), and Bruce Weitz (Hill Street Blues) guest star. Trivia: Bruce Weitz was the voice of crime boss Bruno Manheim in Superman: The Animated Series.
28. Operation Blackout
A reportedly dead former classmate of Lois's turns up in Metropolis with plans to hijack a military satellite, but first he creates a diversion by paralyzing the city with a blackout. Charles Rocket (SNL, Flying Blind) and J.T. Walsh (Backdraft) guest star.
29. That Old Gang of Mine
Al Capone (William Devane), John Dillinger (Robert Clohessy), Bonnie and Clyde (Joseph Gian and Amy Hathaway) return from the dead by the hands of a scientist. They start a crime wave in Metropolis and when one of them shoots Clark, he needs to fake his own death to protect his identity. [Loved Teri Hatcher's performance as Lois reacting to Clark getting shot, and also later when he turns up alive. Clark tries to "disappear" to do his Superman thing, but Lois (so thrilled he's alive) is like "Ohhh no...I'm not letting you out of my sight!" Great scenes.]
30. A Bolt From the Blue
Metropolis's second superhero, Resplendent Man, is born when Superman and a suicidal man that he attempts to save are struck by lightning giving the man superpowers. Cindy Williams (Laverne & Shirley), Leslie Jordan (Boston Legal, Will & Grace), and Denise Crosby guest star.
31. Season's Greedings
George and Weezie, er the Toyman and his secretary ruin Christmas for holiday shoppers driven to buy the toy sensation of the season, his Atomic Space Rats - which contain a chemical that turns everyone greedy. Sherman Hemsley & Isabel Sanford (The Jeffersons), and Dick Van Patten (Eight Is Enough) guest star.
32. Metallo
Superman meets his match in Lucy Lane's boyfriend Johnny Corben, a kryptonite-powered cyborg created by the hands of two scientists who once worked for Lexcorp. Scott Valentine (Family Ties) guest stars.
33. Chi of Steel
Lois and Clark's probe into the theft of Perry White's savings leads to a search for a powerful ninja master whose strength seems to equal that of Superman. Brian Doyle Murray (Yes, Dear), James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China) guest star.
34. The Eyes Have It
Superman is blinded by an evil ophthalmologist (David Bowe) who's already killed a scientist to get his hands on a light-beam device that gives him control over the world. Gerrit Graham (Parker Lewis Can't Lose) and Farrah Forke guest star.
35. The Phoenix
Lex Luthor (John Shea) rises from the dead, having lost his millions but not his desire for Lois--or his wish to kill Superman by getting his hands on some kryptonite. Tony Jay (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and Denise Crosby guest star.
36. Top Copy
A telegenic temptress (Raquel Welch), who threatens to expose Clark Kent as Superman uses her TV celebrity as a cover to hide her identity as an Intergang assassin. Robert Culp (I, Spy) guest stars.
37. Return of the Prankster
The Prankster (Bronson Pinchot) breaks out of jail with a plot to kidnap the President and to paralyze Metropolis with a fearsome light beam that temporarily freezes victims. Rick Overton (Groundhog Day) and Harold Gould (Rhoda) guest star.
38. Lucky Leon
Sparks fly as Lois and Clark finally go out on a date--but the afterglow is interrupted by a murder investigation and the search for nuclear warheads. John Kapelos, Robert Culp, and Mark Rolston (Rush Hour) guest star.
39. Resurrection
As Clark mourns the loss of a friend, Lois discovers a man being buried alive at the cemetary--which leads the reporters to a trio of "resurrected" convicts. Jim Pirri (Union Square) and Curtis Armstrong (Moonlighting) guest star.
40. Tempus Fugitive
Aided by H.G. Wells' time machine, Clark and Lois go back to the year 1966 in Smallville--to rescue the infant Superman from a futuristic villain. Terry Kiser and Lane Davies (Whoops!) guest star.
41. Target: Jimmy Olsen!
Jimmy Olsen becomes the unwitting subject of a rogue doctor conducting top-secret mind-control tests to create assassins who kill on command. Michelle Phillips (Knots Landing), Charles Napier (The Blues Brothers), and Jim Pirri guest star.
42. Individual Responsibility
Perry White is kidnapped by Intergang operatives, but it looks like he won't be getting any help from Superman, whose exposure to a mysterious red kryptonite renders him apathetic. Bruce Campbell (The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.) and Barbara Bosson (Murder One) guest star.
43. Whine, Whine, Whine
Clark has had his fill of Metropolis after he's snubbed by Lois for his inability to commit, and after Superman is sued by a litigious rock-star wannabe (Jason Carter). Kay Lenz (Reasonable Doubts) and Jim Pirri guest star.
44. And the Answer Is...
A jewelry-store heir finds evidence of Clark's true identity and threatens to expose him as Superman unless Clark steals a cache of diamonds--and then kills Lois Lane. Maurice Godin (Cafe Americain) and Tony Jay guest star.

(More customer reviews)What has been said about the Dark Knight cannot be elaborated on - so I won't. The film is muscling its way into my #1 favorite comic movie adaptation of all time.
The reason for my review is in hopes of saving you some money. This double disc Special Edition doesn't deliver the price you pay for it. There isn't even deleted scenes!!! I would save your very hard earned dollars and buy the single disc version and wait for the inevitable ULTIMATE re-release that will come later on down the road.
But nonetheless, a great film - you will not be dissapointed; I just wish the studio would have given a better Special Edition release than what we have here. So enjoy!

Based on Kathryn Lasky's children's series (Guardians of Ga'hoole Complete Set, Books 1-15), The Legend of the Guardians: the Owls of Ga'hoole is an epic story of good and evil, bravery, betrayal and of doing what's right.
Briefly, the story centers around Soren, a young barn owl living in the forest of Tyto, who is enraptured with the tales his father tells of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, the great warriors and protectors of the owl world who have passed into legend. When Soren and his brother Kludd are kidnapped and taken to a deep canyon where young owls are being "moon-blinked" into mindless slavery by the evil "Pure Ones", Soren escapes with another young owl and sets out to find the Guardians and plead for their help. Once they find the Guardians, a rescue is planned and the film climaxes with a soaring aerial battle between the Guardians and the Pure Ones.
The plot is not new. Fans of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, among others, will recognize many of the story elements and several of the characters common to films and books based on the classic "Hero's Journey". So, the question becomes - have the filmmakers made this hero's journey one worth seeing? For me, the answer is "Yes". And that "yes" comes, in no small part, from how the film looks.
Legend of the Guardians is so completely spectacular to look at that I found myself able to ignore some of the issues with the plotting and the script and just sit back and drown in the visual feast. The "scenery" throughout the entire film - so jaw-droppingly gorgeous in theaters - translates very well to the home screen and the animation looks superb on Blu-ray. The flying sequences are not quite as breathtaking here as they were on the big screen, but all-in-all I think the film has made a successful transition to home viewing. Certainly it remains incredibly beautiful and exciting to look at. I wish all animated films offered the same visual pleasure.

Parents should be aware, though, that "animated" in this case does not translate into "kiddie-show". While there are moments of warmth and companionship and a few humorous bits, the film has a number of violent scenes and an overall intensity that might frighten or lessen the enjoyment of the under 8 crowd. I will volunteer, though, that my just under 8 year old granddaughter LOVED this film and didn't seem to find it too intense at all. So my age guesstimate might be a bit off. Since parents always know their own children and what they can handle far better than any reviewers do anyway, I offer the "8 and over" as a sort of jumping off point. :) I'll add, too, that the level of intensity I felt the film possessed on the big screen seemed somewhat lessened when I viewed the film at home.A few additional notes on the film:
* There are a lot of characters with unusual names. Unless viewers (kids OR adults) have read the books, they're probably not going to catch or remember them all in a first viewing.
* There are a few instances where the dialogue is difficult to understand.
* The score suits the film. In parts it incorporates the human voice, as Lord of the Rings did, to effectively evoke an emotional response in the viewer. On the other hand, the song "To the Sky" (credited to "Owl City" on the soundtrack CD) was, IMO, the film's most glaring misstep. The chipper tune felt so out of place it actually made me cringe.Some notes on the DVD (I bought the Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy version):
I'll admit straight off that I am not a techy person, so my comments on the quality of the video can be taken with that in mind. That said, the Blu-ray picture clarity is wonderful, the colors vivid and the sound good. For me, all are completely satisfactory. Navigation is pretty straight-forward and didn't trip me up too often - something I'm thankful for and something I, unfortunately, can't say about all DVDs.
The film can be viewed in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese. Subtitles in those same languages are also offered.
Special features include:
* "True Guardians of the Earth": The animated character Digger & Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family) host a documentary about owls which presents interesting information in a kid-friendly style.
* Maximum "Kid" Mode - Explore the World of Ga'hoole": Soren and other cast members act as guides for this picture-in-picture style viewing of the film. Information is offered on animation and various aspects of filmmaking and storytelling. Well done. Should be particularly interesting to young people interested in behind the scenes stuff and the nuts and bolts of filmmaking. Also included is additional scientific information about owls, their anatomy and their habits.
* Legend of the Guardians: Armor up with Soren & Eglantine: Kids can mix and match different types of owl armor.
* Match the Owl Treats: A matching game.
* "Legend of the Guardians: Rise of the Guardians": A short film about the Pure Ones and the legendary Battle of the Ice Claws between Metalbeek and Lyze of Kiel.
* Looney Tunes "Fur of Flying": The Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote cartoon featured in theaters along with LOTG. (On the 3D version of this DVD, this cartoon is also in 3D.)
* Artwork Galleries: stills of some of the lovely artwork from the film.
* "To the Sky" music video by Owl City.For my granddaughter and me, this film was a winner and now that it's part of my home collection, I'm looking forward to sharing it with my other grandchildren over the next few years as they grow old enough to appreciate it. While the plot may be rather familiar, IMO it avoided coming across as tired or trite. That, along with the stunning look of the film, makes it easy for me to recommend it. And I do, happily.

Superman - The Movie (Four-Disc Special Edition) (1978) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a tough one to review. For a film made in 1978, I don't think it could look any better. I'm willing to bet this Blu-ray disc is as good if not better than the premiere screening of Superman back in 78. Great care must have been taken to clean up and restore this picture. It is practically free of scratches and dirt. It is detailed, far above standard definition. Colors are balanced and eye catching. Contrast is natural and evenly spread. Inserted scenes are consistent with the rest of the film. Never looked better. Still, 1978. There are a few scenes with plenty of grain and most of the film gives the impression of being a little out of focus, a little blurred. Five star transfer, four star visual impact. I doubt if a 1080p display is getting much more out of this picture than a 720p display.

Batman - The Complete 1943 Movie Serial Collection (1943) Review

(More customer reviews)Before the big glossy Batman movies and the campy 1960's television series there was this little masterpiece. It starts strong with the spooky music over the opening credits. Lambert Hillyer was an experienced B-movie director but this was his first and only serial. He makes it an enjoyable adventure with an unusual sense of humor for a serial. Note the banter between Alfred, Batman, and Robin in the third chapter after Alfred fires a few shots with his eyes closed.
The film has been criticized as racist, which it certainly is, rife with comments like "Since a wise government rounded up the shifty-eyed Japs..." and "your twisted Oriental brain." But that's exactly the way it was at the height of World War Two, so this is really a historical document of the pervasive attitude at that time. The War was still unsettled in 1943, and people were terrified of the Japanese threat. The serial has also been issued in a cleaned-up version, but this one is much more realistic even if it wouldn't be acceptable today. Just try to enjoy it for what it was.
I particularly like Lewis Wilson when he's Bruce Wayne, with his tongue-in-cheek portrayal of a lazy playboy, even though in his Batman guise he displays a bit of a gut that kept him out of the 1949 sequel. He's really a cool dude for 1943.
J. Carrol Naish was a great character actor, garnering two Oscar nominations in a long and distinguished career. He specialized in foreign dialects, and as Dr. Daka he does his best Peter Lorre imitation. Any villain would kill for that living room with the built-in alligator pit.
Douglas Croft (nee Douglas Wheatcroft, 1926-1963) was a successful child actor in the early 1940's. The year before he played Robin in this serial he was in both "Pride of the Yankees" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy," playing Lou Gehrig and James M. Cohan, respectively, as a boy. Not much is known of him as he dropped out of acting later in the decade, and died at the age of only 37.
Shirley Patterson (1921-1995, later known as Shawn Smith) was Miss California of 1940. After this performance she played in B-Westerns opposite Charles Starrett, Johnny Mack Brown, and others. Even Charles Middleton, that all-time favorite serial villain, puts in an appearance starting in Chapter Six, but this time he's on the right side of the law as Dan Colton, who has discovered a radium mine and of course Daka needs radium for his nefarious schemes.
As usual with Columbia serials the fights and the chases don't measure up to Republic's standards, and in general the cliffhangers aren't as good either. But the way Batman escapes from the old room-with-sharp-blades-closing-in routine at the end of Chapter 13 is a classic. The Chapter 14 cliffhanger isn't bad, either.
Be sure to watch for a cameo appearance by Bob Kane, the original creator of Batman. He's the young man who plays a newsboy who sells a newspaper to Bruce Wayne early in the first chapter.

I saw Public Enemies and Apocalypse, the Superman/Batman team-ups, they were very good. The mood and the action in the story were driven by emotion and that was something I've never seen in a superhero story before, it was true to the character of who Superman is in my mind. It's heart felt, its funny, it has action and romance, its one of the best works from Dewayne McDuffie who recently deceased. The best Superman story I have ever seen a must for your collection.
