(More customer reviews)Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford star in Gilda, a noir thriller set in Buenos Aires. Ford plays Johnny, a down on his luck gambler who is picked up by a casino owner. Johnny quickly becomes the casino owner's right-hand man--with a pact that women and gambling don't mix. Then Johnny's boss comes back from a trip with a new wife, Gilda,played incandescently by Rita Hayworth. Gilda is a typical noir femme fatale. She acts fast and loose but is actually just trying to get her guy jealous. Of course, her guy isn't her husband--its Johnny.
This odd little story is highly likeable for about three quarters of the film, when it makes a strange detour. Fortunately for us, the story gets right back on track at the end.
Ford does a good job as the loyal and jealous Johnny. He is vibrant, athletic and serious. Hayworth's beauty glows and gleams. She is given quite a few song and dance numbers. Her dancing is talented but strangely loose limbed. The movie steams with chemistry between Ford and Hayworth which is fortunate because the plot is more than a little cockeyed. The filming is gorgeously contrasted black and white with the requisite shadowy interiors.

Louis L'Amour's The Sacketts (1979) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a motion picture I could watch over again and again, if only to see the terrific collection of Western film icons. An early scene features Ty Sackett (Jeff Osterhage) trying to sign on with a cattle drive. Around the campfire sit the owner of the cattle (L.Q. Jones), the foreman (Glenn Ford), and the top hand (Ben Johnson). Right then the viewer knows that he's in for first-rate entertainment.
The story line is split between Tell Sackett (Sam Elliott) trying to steer clear of three brothers (Jack Elam, Gene Evans, and Slim Pickens) out to revenge Tell's killing of their card shark brother, and Orrin and Ty Sackett (Tom Selleck and Osterhage) doing their best to bring law and order to Sante Fe despite the diabolical dealings of the town's richest man (the always oily John Vernon).
But the focal point of the picture is the underrated Glenn Ford as the mysterious Tom Sunday -- one time attorney, marshal, and even murderer. He begins the film as a mentor to Orrin and Ty, but eventually time and fate pit the three against each other.
Don't get me wrong, "The Sacketts" is not in the league of "The Wild Bunch," "High Noon," or "Ride the High Country," but I can't think of a much better way to spend three hours of my time.
Except for maybe doing a little riding on my old Buckskin on a cool, clear Saturday morning.

Midway (Collector's Edition) (1976) Review

(More customer reviews)I saw the movie play in a theatre and I was greatly impressed.
I still enjoy the movie BUT! at the same time I am disappointed.
When it was released first on VHS and now on DVD I was greatly disappointed to see how much film footage has been cut out from the original theatrical release.
In its original release MIDWAY ran for almost 2 hours 45 minutes.
On VHS and DVD it runs for 2 hours 10 minutes. What happened to all the othe extra scenes???
Where is the Battle of the Coral Sea which was shown in the original movie?

Furthermore they cut out the surround sound and made it Mono.
It is ridiculous that the have a Special Feature on Surround Sound, but the DVD was made in Mono sound.
And they call this DVD a Special Collector's Edition???
Come on Universal give us the full extended theatrical release along with 5.1 Surround Sound.
