(More customer reviews)Mysteries of the Sith continues the adventures of Kyle Katarn in his quest to assist the still struggling Rebel Alliance against the Galactic Empire. The game engine is still pretty much the same, but the sequel, regrettably like a lot of sequels, sees a slight slimming down of production values. The hi-resolution sound effects are gone, and the cut-scenes are no longer acted by real actors, but by the in game graphics coupled with voice overs by an entirely different set of actors playing the same characters (save Mara Jade).
In this regard, the game is a disappointment. But, by and large, it's a respectable installation of the Dark Forces series. Though strictly speaking, it doesn't retain the Dark Forces nomenclature.
I played through both single player and multiplayer several times, and am impressed with the artistry given the technology at the time, but the game did feel a little lacking in some areas. It didn't require much patching, which was a plus, but fewer addons were made for what became known as MOTS (gamer short hand for Mysteries of the Sith), and the newer maps weren't played as much.
The story the game presents is interesting, as are the locations to which Mara must visit. The maps are big and impressive, though by this time the blocky look of the in game characters was just starting to get dated. The first Unreal game had come out, and Quake 2, catering to an older demographic of gamers, was slightly ahead of the curve.
MOTS still had the Star Wars thing going for it, but the, even with new skins, was limited. There were over a thousand multiplayer maps created by the editing community for Jedi Knight (JK), but only 172 maps for MOTS.
MOTS had a few more force powers added to the game (or so I recall), a new multiplayer game of some kind akin to the old school yard game of "smear the queer", which made for an interesting passtime.
It's an interesting game for the single player experience alone. I doubt there's anyone playing the multiplayer games anymore, but the game is now cheap enough (and usually bundled with Jedi Knight) that the single player game should entertain the most die hard of Star Wars' fans.
