The Invention of Lying (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I loved this movie. It's sweet, and funny and really quite brilliant. It is about an imaginary world where no one can lie (and no one has ever been able to lie), and what happens to the very human, but kind-hearted man who first becomes able to. Though his intentions are mostly altruistic (remember, I also said he is very human, so he also does things to benefit himself), he inadvertently causes some big problems in his world. It's all very funny and sweet.
Yes, there are some strong references to the idea that religion is completely made-up, for the purpose of comforting people and calming their fears of death. For someone who can actually *think* about religion, instead of being a knee-jerk reactionary or dogmatic follower, it provides some terrific things to think about.
If your religious faith is so frail that it cannot stand the idea of a fictional story in which someone makes up religion in order to make the world a better place for the people they care about, then I'd have to say that you don't have much in the way of actual faith to begin with.

His Cuban wife Angie{played by the stunning Constance Marie}, is the good Samaritan & matriarchal "know it all." His father in-law Victor Palmero{played perfectly by Emiliano Diez}, is the Cardiologist who can't accept that his upper-middle class daughter married a blue-collar man. The kids are hyperemotional Carmen{Masiela Lusha}, & dyslexic Max{Luis Armand Garcia}. George's best friend & co-worker is the sweet, insecure, loveless, Ernesto Cardenas{Valente Rodriguez} Now for the other main character, one truly can't describe George's verbally cruel mom Benita Lopez-Benny{played brilliantly by Belita Moreno}. She is a cross between Godzilla & Roseanne{Roseanne Barr}, without the softness. She works with George, chain smokes, & drinks.

This is a blue-collar Hispanic version of the "Cosby Show" with more laughs. In this show a solution given to a problem at the end of one episode often creates new plots while maintaining the basic themes. You have an array of multiple disputes. Cuban vs. Mexican, white-collar vs. blue-collar, dominant wife{George, end of discussion!} vs. cynical husband{George loses 99% of the time}, daughter vs. son, parents vs. kids, George vs. Victor, & everyone vs. BENNY! Typically, episodes that involve her are the most hilarious. She can walk into a room{George move your big Pumpkin head out of the way, your blocking the TV!}, offend everyone in 30 seconds, & then leave for a "smoke & a beer." George's wounds from his fatherless childhood & neglectful mother are at the heart of the show as he & Benny rehash every battle as they draw all into their mini Armageddons. The first two seasons were not the best, but this show got better every season. Lastly, Sandra Bullock deserves credit for getting this show on TV.

Cop Out (2010) Review

(More customer reviews)To tell the truth, I wasn't looking forward to this film at all. I'm a pretty big fan of most of Kevin Smith's work, but he didn't write the film. It could be argued that he did write Jersey Girl and that could be considered a bomb, but his films usually average about $25-$30 million anyway. A Kevin Smith film isn't really about bringing in a large amount of money at the box office. His charm is in his writing, especially the dialogue and interaction between characters. There's a very specific audience his films will appeal to and none of them have really branched away from that. But him not writing this one made me think, "Eh. Not sure what that'll be like since he didn't write it." When it comes to Bruce Willis, I've never talked to anyone who dislikes him entirely. There always seems to be at least one of his films everybody enjoys. Die Hard, The Fifth Element, and Sin City are just a few off the top of my head. The real buzzkiller for me though was Tracy Morgan. He's just never been funny to me. He was beyond lame on Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock has never been able to hold my attention for very long. Not to mention all the trailers for Cop Out didn't make me laugh. Thankfully though, first impressions can be so very wrong.
One of Cop Out's biggest charms is that it feels like a buddy cop comedy you've seen before, but have forgotten how much you enjoy it. The film feels similar to a 48 Hrs or Beverly Hills Cop film. Bulletproof is also a good example. Cop Out is pretty much what you expect when it comes to roles Bruce Willis chooses as it's pretty much no different than his role as John McClane on the surface, but he's a lot funnier this time around. As far as Tracy Morgan goes, the funniest thing I could remember him saying was his one line in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back ("Man... I don't know what the f--- you just said, Little Kid, but you're special man, you reached out, and you touched a brother's heart.") until this film. He was downright hilarious at times. The only person who was funnier than Morgan was Seann William Scott who stole every scene he was in. Even though Kevin Smith didn't pen the script this time around, it still feels like a Kevin Smith film. It could be due to the fact that Jason Lee has a small role in the film, but I like to think it's because Cop Out offers the same kind of comedy you'd find in a Kevin Smith film with a bit more action. It also took me forever to place Scarface from Half Baked as Poh Boy.
Cop Out is surprisingly funny and incredibly entertaining. Give this film a chance even if the trailers may not be doing anything for you. I felt the same way and wound up thoroughly enjoying the film. After a long, stressful day at work, an R-rated comedy with a lot of laughs is one of the best ways to relax and this film offers just that. It's a great film to go into with no expectations other than to just have a good time. As long as you don't run out of the theater, you should catch the part in the credits. This might just be the funniest film released in 2010 thus far. Be sure to check it out. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)I just want say something in regards to any negative reviews regarding this film. First of all, this film is a comedy. Nothing more. Nothing less. All political correctness should go out the door when it comes to viewing a comedy film. Secondly, this film delivers on what it's advertised to be. A comedy. Yes, this movie does ask the question of what would you do if you won the lottery. The character in this film does, indeed, make the choice that will not only benefit himself, but, also others. I, for one, loved the film and would recommend it to anyone who wants to see a true comedic film. Much props to Bow Wow (whose acting does seem to get a little better with each film), Ice Cube, Mike Epps, Brandon T. Jackson (who had everyone laughing their guts out), Charlie Murphy, and everyone else involved in this film. Also, notice how I didn't go deep into the plot of the story. Many of you can read that in the description box. I, for one, am tired of reading these "reviews" that go so deep into the plot description that it literally repeats what is written in the product description. Get on here, write about the movie in brief terms, state your opinion, and be done with it. LOTTERY TICKET is a winner. I will definitely own this film on DVD when it's released.

Major Payne (1995) Review

(More customer reviews)When Major Benson Payne (played by Damon Wayans), a one-man-army in a Marine uniform, is discharged, he needs to find a new life. Given command of the Madison Academy Junior ROTC, he sets out to whip the gang of misfit youths into shape. Used to the toughest discipline and the hardest life, Payne is the children's worst nightmare, and there is nothing they won't do to get rid of him. Along the way, though, Payne and his command all learn a few lessons.
This movie is a laugh-riot! Wayans' Payne is hilarious, being just the right mixture of homicidal maniac and tender father figure, while the ROTC cadets make a perfect foil for the Major. My family have never laughed so hard at a movie as we did at this one, with my son being quite pleased with how the Major deals with a "monster" in a young lad's closet - "If he's still in there, he's not happy!"
This is a great movie, the one caveat being that there are quite a few colorful words tossed around by the Major and the cadets. That said, though, this was a hilarious movie that you and your family will like watching again and again!

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Fourth Season (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)It's good to see that Two and a Half Men - The Complete Fourth Season is coming out on DVD, for (in my personal opinion) it's the best and funniest sitcom series of this decade. As a single father, this viewer can find much to relate to... and laugh about.
For those who haven't had the pleasure of seeing this top-rated series on TV, it's about the lives of two brothers, one of the brother's son, and the many people, especially women, who surround them. When his wimpy younger brother Alan Harper (Jon Crier) becomes separated from his wife and moves out of their house, he has to move in with Charlie, his older brother (played by Charlie Sheen). Alan shares custody of his son Jake (Angus T. Jones), who was 10 when the series began and who stays with them part-time. The "half a man" in the title of this sitcom is in reference to the fact that Jake isn't an adult yet.
Charlie Harper is a successful bachelor with a house on Malibu Beach, a Mercedes in the garage and an easy way with women. His easygoing, often hedonistic single lifestyle is interrupted when his tightly-wound brother, Alan (a chiropractor), and Alan's son, Jake , move in with him. Alan's hung-up ex-wife Judith (Marin Hinkle) frequently makes matters worse, as does the brothers' narcissistic mother, Evelyn (Holland Taylor), whose wide-ranging sex life is a recurring gag throughout the series. The brothers' housekeeper Berta (Conchata Ferrell) is unapologetically sarcastic, and often has the best one-liners, trading insults with Charlie referring to Alan as "Zippy." Their household can't function without her.
There are a number of other series regulars, but in this viewer's opinion, Charlie's wacky neighbor and female stalker Rose (Melanie Lynskey) is one of the best. She has a habit of popping over Charlie's deck railing and sometimes enter his house at inopportune moments. It's alluded that she had a one night stand with Charlie shortly before the show started, which she believed to be more significant than he did. Rose's father Harvey is played by Martin Sheen, and in one episode he asks Charlie of his intentions with his daughter. At one point Harvey meets Charlie and Alan's mother and has an affair with her, and popping in and stalking her just like his daughter does with Charlie.
It should be said that this series and its actors have won a number of Emmy Awards and nominations. Those who are familiar with it can well understand why. This series is well worth it, and if you do like it, there are other seasons available:

And notice that they are all rated at 4+ stars by the reviewers here... my call is that they're all 5-stars. It's one of the best sitcom series... ever!

The Middle: The Complete First Season (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)You know all those over-hyped, supposedly 'edgy' and daring comedies the critics insist all discerning TV fans SHOULD love and appreciate? Well, The Middle isn't among them ;) But while critics have given the show a lukewarm reception, all of the actual TV viewers I know have been immediately charmed and delighted by this underrated gem of a show.
The Middle doesn't go out of its way to flaunt just how edgy and risque it can be. It doesn't, like so many other critically lauded shows, feature wholly unlikable people doing wholly unlikable things while half-winking at the camera over just how zany they are. It doesn't go for over-the-top wackiness or the kind of constant lowbrow sexual innuendo and fart jokes that you might unplesantly associate with high school locker rooms.
Instead, The Middle simply tells the story of a family that's likable and even admirable despite also being realistically, comically flawed. The humor stems from the strong characterizations, sharp dialogue and the clever insight peppered throughout. (You'll be thinking "that is SO true...it's scary how well I can relate to that!" at least a few times per episode). We get flashes heartwarming poignancy here too, but rest assured that it's never too sappy or forced.
This is one of those rare shows that successfully blends humor with heart, and I was pleasantly surprised to realize how much I've come to love spending time with this family. I used to have a weird visceral dislike for Patricia Heaton and, for reasons alluded to above, rarely like sitcoms...but this show immediately reversed my opinion of Patricia Heaton's acting abilities, and even gave me a renewed hope for the sitcom genre!
One major reason it's worth owning on DVD: The vast majority of the episodes not only hold up with multiple viewings, but actually improve, as you notice subtle moments of awesomeness that you were too busy laughing to pick up on the first time around. So many shows *claim* to have struck that balance between wit and poignancy; to have created lovable yet hilariously flawed characters; to have written dialogue that's sharp and memorable. This is one of the few shows that, in my clearly Middle-loving opinion, has actually succeeded in all those areas and more. It's a show that provides mood-boosting humor with moments of sharp insight into what it means to be part of a family and a steady supply of heartwarming charm. I can't wait to get my fangirl hands on those DVDs, and look forward to rooting for and laughing with the Hecks for many years to come!

McLintock (Authentic Collector's Edition) (1963) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been a McLintock fan since 1963...when it came out to the movies. My dad took me to see it on my 11th birthday. I held off buying the VHS version once I discovered the Wayne Foundation had not released an "authorized" copy. Once it did, I purchased three...just in case one got damaged! Yes...I love the movie. For DVD customers....it IS worth the wait. If, as you can see from other reviews, the transfer quality to DVD is poor, then why waste your money now, when you can (HOPEFULLY!!) purchase the legitimate product when the Wayne Foundation releases it! This is a GREAT movie for all ages. Kids love the shenanigans, teens like the romance, and us old-timers just like an easy-on-the-eyes and -ears movie with a happy ending. This is the only movie review I've ever written, but the movie was worth it.

The majority of the video consists of interviews with both attendees and booth runners. Though a couple interviews come out a little flat, there's some wonderful ones in there. The Troma (did a pile of B grade cult classics like "Toxic Avenger") interview is particularly good.

George Lucas in Love (1997) Review

'George Lucas In Love' was a very fun short. From Lucas' roommate Benji talking about an 'all powerful force' to his friends Hal & Chuck working on Hal's 'fastest thing on campus' to a professor whose speech patterns resembled a well known Jedi Master, this film has a heck of a lot crammed into it's 9 minutes. If anything, the filmmakers should have done a 15-20 minute film! The film was very clever and enjoyable. Maybe just a tad bit funnier than 'Hardware Wars'.
The music, cinematography, and acting are all very good, indeed. Anyone who didn't enjoy this at least a little really needs to get a sense of humor. Of course, it's a bit cheesy, but it's meant to be that way. It's presented in the slightly corny, overblown way that 'Hardware Wars' or the 'Naked Gun' films were. The same people who didn't understand those films probably won't understand 'George Lucas In Love'. It's not a 'great' film, but who cares? It's a fun little short by a guy who really loves 'Star Wars'. Some have condemned the filmmakers doing this just for the money. I seriously doubt that Mr. Nussbaum will make a huge fortune from this film and if he does, big deal. Nothing wrong with making money from doing what you love or making money at all. Surely, none of the people who reviewed this film would go and work at their jobs for free and live in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere! Anyway, GLIL is great fun and a great to watch before your next screening of 'Phantom Menace' or the original trilogy.

Thumb Wars - The Phantom Cuticle (1999) Review

(More customer reviews)I can't tell you how funny the entire Thumb series is. I had originally rented the double feature DVD ThumbWars/Thumbtanic at Blockbuster with my then 9 yr old son. I laughed so hard that I almost pee'd my pants!!! We were at Best Buys shortly thereafter, saw the entire boxed set and bought it on the spot. Steve Oedekerk is one funny guy!
ThumbWars - The Phantom Cuticle was originally released as simply Thumb Wars. It is a parady of the orginal Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back movies. And an extremely GOOD parody at that - far superior to Mel Brooks' boring SpaceBalls. Apparently with all the hype and hoopla that surounded the release of Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Steve Oedekerk decided to cash in and re-released Thumb Wars as 'The Phantom Cuticle." Be advised ... if you purchase the box set of Thumb movies you will already get this movie as it was originally titled.
If you are in need of a good hard belly laugh, pick up ANY of the Thumb movies and prepare to be running back and forth to the bathroom!!!! May the Tumb be with yooooooou..............

Hardware Wars 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition (1977) Review

(More customer reviews)My review is specifically about the "Special Edition" of "Hardware Wars." I was thrilled to see a video release of HW, as I have been a fan of the short since its original release (HBO used to show it a lot way back when. I made a tape of it years ago, but lost it). But I was apprehensive when I saw that this version was a digitally enhanced "Special Edition." Sure enough, when the video arrived, it carried a sticker on the case, reading: "Warning: This edition has been created without the approval or consent of Eddie Fossellius." I'm just guessing, but I figured that Fossellius, the director of the original HW, didn't care to have his short film "enhanced," regardless of the satirical intent. The folks who put together this "Special Edition" make a valiant effort to use HW as a way to satirize Luca's digitally enhanced Star Wars Special Edition Trilogy. Unfortunately, the satire doesn't work, and, in some cases, the digital enhancements even spoil the jokes of the original short film. Ironically some of the satire falls flat because the digital effects are too good. In a short that is celebrated for its intentional cheesiness, this is a major error. Another major problem, I think, is one of reference. For a lot of younger viewers, this will be their first exposure to HW, so a lot of the attempted parody of the HW "Special Edition" will be lost on them. I really think it would have helped the humor of the "Special Edition" if the distributors had included the original, untouched version of HW at the beginning of the tape. To be fair, there are a couple of funny original bits before and after the film, but they don't make up for the lost opportunities on the film itself. If you're a fan of HW looking to own a pristine copy of the original film, as I was, you'll probably be less than satisfied, as I was, with this "enhanced" version.

(More customer reviews)First let em start off, by saying I had been waiting for this to be released from the day I heard about, as my family and I enjoy these type of family oriented games (ie: Singstar, Lips, Scene It).
Overall the game isn't all that bad, it just is a slight disappointment, when you sit down and compare it to the pre-release videos that have been shown, the clarity doesn't match up to video previews, I had seen, there not horrible, but like another review stated, choppy, with a glow around your character... Another feature I am not happy with is the fact that you must have your kinect set to Chat On.. Well, I am online nightly playing MW2, and know have to remember to shut down the chat option before going online, so the whole world doesn't hear my entires house drama... The third, would be the outline of your character alot of time has you facing away from the tv, during the scene, making it impossible to read the lines, so you better have a good memory...
The Good points are: definately a great party game, with a bunch of people around, would be great to listen how people can improvise a scene to their own. Also another feature which seems to be the biggest hit at my house so far, would be the scenes that have no dialogue, you simply adlib the scene yourself, such as the King Kong & I am Legend scene, those seem to be the most enjoyable.
Overall, the game is probably not worth the $50 it currently was released at, but @ say $30, would be a decent investment...

Your co-star finishes his line and all eyes turn to you. With a deep breath, you begin your performance. Gesturing with your hands, turning your head thoughtfully to the side, delivering every line with gusto, you're pretty sure you nailed it. You smile timidly, awaiting your critique. It's tough to be a movie star, but someone has to do it. Why not you?

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga Review

(More customer reviews)When I was a kid I would sit in my basement in isolation from the world, watching Star Wars and playing Legos. It makes me laugh how perfect this game is for me. You get to play though the StarWars stories while having the same amount of puzzles and slight hangups that any lego project should have. It's funny to see how they've integrated all of the characters, vehicles, and sets into the lego world! This game may be too playful for some, but I actually prefer that for a Star Wars game.
I just can't stand Star Wars games that take themselves so seriously. Almost every game I play is 99% about light saber battles and space fights. I love the Star Wars saga because of how playful it is! The light saber battles are cool and important in the movies, but they makeup less than 10% of the films! This game compliments the playfulness of the movies and adds it's own little twists here and there. The movies are about the struggles and stories of each character. In Lego Star Wars, finally you get to play a game that is as much about the stories as it can be while still being a game. You get to fight with a light saber, but it's used as it should be, as a jedi's most important tool as well as an almost perfect defense.
George Lucas always said his movies were supposed to be like a silent film, that you could watch them without any dialog and still understand everything. This game is just that! It has zero dialog, but it plays through the story with a wit and grace that mirrors the Star Wars movies. This game is never dull and keeps you coming back even after you've finished the story. There is SO MUCH TO DO! The original Lego Star Wars was fun and took forever to complete. But with the addition of episodes 4-6, "Complete Saga" has an almost limitless number of cool things to do. If you love Star Wars and play this game for 5 mins, you will be hooked just as I am.
