The Invention of Lying (2009) Review

The Invention of Lying (2009)

I loved this movie. It's sweet, and funny and really quite brilliant. It is about an imaginary world where no one can lie (and no one has ever been able to lie), and what happens to the very human, but kind-hearted man who first becomes able to. Though his intentions are mostly altruistic (remember, I also said he is very human, so he also does things to benefit himself), he inadvertently causes some big problems in his world. It's all very funny and sweet.
Yes, there are some strong references to the idea that religion is completely made-up, for the purpose of comforting people and calming their fears of death. For someone who can actually *think* about religion, instead of being a knee-jerk reactionary or dogmatic follower, it provides some terrific things to think about.
If your religious faith is so frail that it cannot stand the idea of a fictional story in which someone makes up religion in order to make the world a better place for the people they care about, then I'd have to say that you don't have much in the way of actual faith to begin with.

Bring it On: Fight to the Finish (2009) Review

Bring it On: Fight to the Finish (2009)

I know what a lot of people are thinking, OMG, another freakin' bring it on movie. First of all: The franchise is really a trilogy (1,3,5), 2nd: Give this one a chance, you will be surprised. There were new lines that are repeatable, mostly spoken by the Character Gloria. These movies do present an element of cheese, but let's face it, that is what makes them fun. You aren't watching these with the intent in finding a new oscar contender. As soon as it was over, I wanted to watch again, something that I would never say about any of the others, except for the original. The movie finally brought it!!!! The music was good as well. I never heard a Christina Milian song in my life, and now I am looking to buy the soundtrack. It was a mixture of the 1st and 3rd movies brought together with a Step Up feel. I loved it an now i will watch it again!

Christina Milian stars as sassy cheer captain Lina Cruz, whose world is turned upside-down when her family moves from the urban streets of East Los Angeles to the sunny beach town of Malibu. At her new school, Lina clashes with Avery, the ultra-competitive all-star cheer captain, while also falling for Avery\'s super-cute brother, Evan. Lina\'s always been able to rise to a challenge, but can she create a new all-star squad, beat Avery at the Spirit Championships, and still keep her romance with Evan? Hot music, fierce competition and high-flyin\' fun continue in this all-new movie!

Men With Guns (1998) Review

Men With Guns (1998)
Average Reviews:

This movie grapples with some serious issues. What, exactly is going on politically in South America? Where does individual responsibility lie? What does helping people really mean? What kind of legacy is it possible to leave? The setting of this movie is an unnamed country in South America. The writer/director, John Sayles, did this on purpose. This is to show that the kind of thing depicted in the movie could happen anywhere. However, it was shot in Mexico, in Spanish, with English subtitles.
The movie starts Federico Luppi as Dr. Humberto Fuentes, a wealthy doctor who is approaching retirement and has never paid close attention to the realities of his country. His greatest achievement, the "legacy" he is leaving, is his participation in an international health program in which he trained young doctors to work in the poorest of villages.
I watched this movie with horror and then, finally, resignation, as Dr. Fuentes travels in the mountains and makes startling discoveries. I made a few startling discoveries myself -- the abject poverty of the people, the disregard for human life, the acceptance by the people of this as a way of life. He finds that the people have no food. He finds that both the army and the guerillas are equally brutal. The movie takes us all on a journey with Dr. Fuentes. Along the way we meet a homeless child, a priest who lives with his own private demons, and a deserter from the army with a history of participating in the carnage. The movie goes deeper and deeper into the despair and devastation.
This is not a comfortable video to watch as it brings the viewer not only into the realities of the political systems in South America, but to the basic question of individual responsibility. I recommend it for those who are willing to take a fresh look at these things. You will not be smilling after viewing this video. But you will be thinking.

10,000 B.C. (2008) Review

10,000 B.C. (2008)
Average Reviews:

First off, I did enjoy the movie. It wasn't fantastic by any stretch of the imagination, but it kept my attention. The special effects were well done (loved the sabretooth cat) and the costumes and score reflected the tone of the film. However, as many other reviewers have noted, the movie was almost plodding until the last 20 minutes and relied too heavily upon several convenient prophecies to propel the thin plot.
While I was hoping for something along the lines of The Scorpion King (Widescreen Collector's Edition), an action-packed sword and sandal flick, what I got was a movie where Clan of the Cave Bear meets Stargate (Ultimate Edition). We have a young girl with blue eyes taken in by a primitive tribe. They have a prophecy that she and one of their warriors will save their people. And until she is kidnapped by four legged demons (men on horses) all the viewer gets is the narrator talking and the men hunting. That's it. While "Clan" was based on a heavily researched book, with an engaging heroine and interesting historical details, "BC" is a hodgepodge of history and the narrator doesn't have anything vital to reveal. I agree with the reviewer who felt there should be more sex and violence befitting such a savage time. Normally, I don't care for gratuitous sex or violence but in this instance I heartily agree. Something needed to jump start this film. After the kidnapping, things didn't pick up much either. Our hero goes after her and we follow the three men tracking them for far too long. Along the way, our hero runs into a tribe of african people, who happily form an army for him since he fulfills one of their prophecies, and the climax is all set up. Finally, the film starts moving along, only viewers will feel like they are suddenly watching Stargate.
The hero arrives at a huge construction site by the river. Many thousands of slaves are building a pyramid for "The Almighty," a mysterious figure attended by robed men and young boys - just like Ra in Stargate. Even his building and chambers look like Ra's! And he'll face defeat from a primitive people to boot. And guess what? The Almighty has a prophecy that a Hunter with a mark will come to destroy him! Despite the total lack of originality, and yet another prophecy, the very predictable ending still managed to make the movie worth watching. A stampede of Mammoths, thousands of extras, lots of fighting, and a triumph of good over evil are always attention grabbing. And, I just love a happy ending.
Overall, this movie could have been so much better if they had cut out the boring overview of the tribe in the beginning in favor of more information about The Almighty. We never learn where he came from, how he took control, nothing. He was far more interesting a character than the hero, and he didn't get much screen time. Still, if you're looking for a movie to pass the time, this wasn't bad. But, I'd recommend renting it.

Disney's Toontown Online Review

Disney's Toontown Online
Average Reviews:

I have been playing ToonTown Online for close to 2 years now. A co-worker got me hooked on it after her child got her hooked on it after seeing a commerical for it on The Disney Channel. Yes, it is an online game (hence the name ToonTown Online) and it very specifically indicates on the packaging that a recurring fee is necessary to play it after the initial 2 month game time has expired. The game is downloadable from the ToonTown website and the retail version is NOT a necessity to have. The game is a HUGE download and the CD is great to have if you have dial-up internet access like I do.
As for play value, it is great. I have 2 active toons (you can have 6) on my account that I play on a regular basis. Yes, it is geared towards kids but many of the players I encounter are adults that were hooked by their children. It is safe for kids as there are pre-made phrases that you use for your toon to communicate with other toons. There is the option for real-life players to "code" with each other so they can speak freely with each other. Even with the free speech being available, it is heavily filtered for bad language. I have tested many different "bad" words in various spellings and even inserted spaces and other characters to attempt to get it to let it come across but it won't. Kudos to Disney for being proactive in anticipating what lengths some people will go to spoil kid fun.
The concept of the game is not different than any other MMOG like EverQuest, Final Fantasy etc. You are given quests to complete for jellybeans (money), gags (weapons) and laff boosts (strength). The only difference is that this game is designed for children.
It is well worth the $10 a month and the game is always expanding. Since I have been playing there have been 2 major updates and a 3rd is scheduled for sometime in April or May, giving toons an additional neighborhood/Cog HQ to play in with new tasks and rewards.
Happy Tooning.

Created especially for kids 8-12, but enjoyed by all who are young at heart. Players are Toons who join forces to save the world from Cog's, humorless business robots who are attempting to turn the colorful, happy world of Toontown into a dark metropolis of corporate monotony. Because Cogs can't take a joke, Toons use their favorite weapon-humor-to save their world.

Star Trek Starship Creator Warp 2 Review

I had such high hopes with the first release of this game, which, while intriguing, had the potential to be so much more. I quickly tired of the execution and gameplay but not the concept, so I was excited to see a revised version was out. Unfortunately, Imagery has done little to address or improve on the problems I had with Version 1. Don't get me wrong: this concept is top-notch: build your own Starfleet starship, with customized "parts" available to make it look different (radically-shaped saucers or nacelles), name it, staff it, upgrade it with equipment and necessary engine parts, and send it off on missions which earn you more credits to buy improvements, more ships, etc. Unfortunately, the execution is poor and lackluster. My biggest complaint is the `missions' which can take up to 7-10 minutes (even at double-speed play) and require no input from the player: they are visually uninteresting with no challenge, and even the exciting music stops after about 30 seconds. I was really hoping that Version 2 would improve on this, with more fully interactive missions and *more* of them...unfortunately not. There's a lot about the framework of this game to admire, but even I, who's not a game designer, can think of several improvements that would have made this top-notch in addition to improving the mission variety and interactivity: give us an easier way to customize our own officers and crew than programming in HTML-like files--why not a series of `generic' Starfleet human and alien portraits and an in-game entry section to add names, ranks, specializations, background data, etc. How about giving your crew the ability to rise in rank on successful missions (or fall, or die, on failed ones)? How about a simple AI program that would help guide you through the construction and refitting process and remind you what you've forgotten to install or need to repair...maybe in the form of verbal hints from Scotty? ("Och, ye need to add transporter circuits before ye head out of dock, laddie.") And on and on. I could rant all day, backseat piloting a Version Three, but instead I'll put the "Star Trek Starship Creator Warp 2" CD-ROM away in a desk drawer with Version One, and reflect on what Scotty once said in the original series: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." Got no one to blame but myself for buying this game again. But I won't be aboard for any version three.

First let em start off, by saying I had been waiting for this to be released from the day I heard about, as my family and I enjoy these type of family oriented games (ie: Singstar, Lips, Scene It).
Overall the game isn't all that bad, it just is a slight disappointment, when you sit down and compare it to the pre-release videos that have been shown, the clarity doesn't match up to video previews, I had seen, there not horrible, but like another review stated, choppy, with a glow around your character... Another feature I am not happy with is the fact that you must have your kinect set to Chat On.. Well, I am online nightly playing MW2, and know have to remember to shut down the chat option before going online, so the whole world doesn't hear my entires house drama... The third, would be the outline of your character alot of time has you facing away from the tv, during the scene, making it impossible to read the lines, so you better have a good memory...
The Good points are: definately a great party game, with a bunch of people around, would be great to listen how people can improvise a scene to their own. Also another feature which seems to be the biggest hit at my house so far, would be the scenes that have no dialogue, you simply adlib the scene yourself, such as the King Kong & I am Legend scene, those seem to be the most enjoyable.
Overall, the game is probably not worth the $50 it currently was released at, but @ say $30, would be a decent investment...

The camera's rolling. The lights are blasting down from all directions. You've only got one chance to get this right and prove you're the right actor for this movie. Your co-star finishes his line and all eyes turn to you. With a deep breath, you begin your performance. Gesturing with your hands, turning your head thoughtfully to the side, delivering every line with gusto, you're pretty sure you nailed it. You smile timidly, awaiting your critique. It's tough to be a movie star, but someone has to do it. Why not you?
