(More customer reviews)Some confusion among other reviewers that somehow we're obligated to post a five star recommendation for the movie. This is an incorrect understanding of the review process. If I were reviewing the movie itself it would get a five. This review is for the product, as listed--in other words, I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS PRODUCT/DVD. This product is being created FOR NO OTHER REASON than to dupe people into buying this movie twice...again. Those of us who were huge fans bought the original DVDs of the theatrical releases. THEN the studio FINALLY released the extended editions, even though they could have released both at the same time. Now that Blu Ray has won the High Def battle, the studios are salivating at screwing us all again the same way!
Please do not let them get away with pretending that Blu Ray can't hold both versions on one disc--it certainly can! A simple menu option would let you watch the Extended Edition when you have time, or Theatrical Edition when you don't.
Their other argument, that "Peter Jackson is busy working on The Hobbit and will work on Extended Editions later" is 100% total BS. He's ALREADY DONE THE WORK--just copy what he did for the regular DVDs onto a new Blu Ray master!
BOTTOM-LINE: The studios will make whatever argument they think will fly to convince us they can't put both versions on one disc, because they want to double their income on this movie. Which has ALREADY MADE THEM A BILLION DOLLARS. Don't play along--let friends know not to buy ANY LOTR Blu Ray that doesn't have BOTH versions on one disc.
Please do not let them get away with holding the extended edition hostage until everyone buys the theatrical versions. If you agree with my review, you can do your part to exert influence on the studio by doing the following:

Xbox 360 Arcade Play Wireless Controller Gaming Pack Review

(More customer reviews)I don't often post reviews online, but I was so disappointed by this product that I was moved to make an exception. Three of the four games (Lumines, Geometry Wars 2, and Bomberman) are included on a disc. The box includes a code that allows you to download Ms. Pac-Man from Live. For people who have hard drives and Xbox Live (which really should be everyone), this latter solution is the only one that makes any sense at all. You dial in the code, download the game, and it's as simple as any other XBLA game from there on out. The other three games all must be played off the disc - it does not permit you to play them like you would regular XBLA games. However the software code is largely unchanged, so that the games themselves don't recognize they are being played off a disc. Bomberman simply doesn't work - it tries to force you to download an update of the game, but because you never downloaded it in the first place, the "update" would cost the full $10, and it won't allow you to play without the update. Lumines and Geometry Wars 2 are at least playable, but I don't know if Lumines DLC is compatible. That's iffy at best and I wasn't willing to risk it. I will be calling Xbox support, which isn't something you should have to do minutes after opening the box.
In sum: it is more of a hassle than necessary, poorly thought out, and one of the four games simply doesn't work. I am extremely disappointed and cannot recommend this product.

Disney's Toontown Online Review

(More customer reviews)I have been playing ToonTown Online for close to 2 years now. A co-worker got me hooked on it after her child got her hooked on it after seeing a commerical for it on The Disney Channel. Yes, it is an online game (hence the name ToonTown Online) and it very specifically indicates on the packaging that a recurring fee is necessary to play it after the initial 2 month game time has expired. The game is downloadable from the ToonTown website and the retail version is NOT a necessity to have. The game is a HUGE download and the CD is great to have if you have dial-up internet access like I do.
As for play value, it is great. I have 2 active toons (you can have 6) on my account that I play on a regular basis. Yes, it is geared towards kids but many of the players I encounter are adults that were hooked by their children. It is safe for kids as there are pre-made phrases that you use for your toon to communicate with other toons. There is the option for real-life players to "code" with each other so they can speak freely with each other. Even with the free speech being available, it is heavily filtered for bad language. I have tested many different "bad" words in various spellings and even inserted spaces and other characters to attempt to get it to let it come across but it won't. Kudos to Disney for being proactive in anticipating what lengths some people will go to spoil kid fun.
The concept of the game is not different than any other MMOG like EverQuest, Final Fantasy etc. You are given quests to complete for jellybeans (money), gags (weapons) and laff boosts (strength). The only difference is that this game is designed for children.
It is well worth the $10 a month and the game is always expanding. Since I have been playing there have been 2 major updates and a 3rd is scheduled for sometime in April or May, giving toons an additional neighborhood/Cog HQ to play in with new tasks and rewards.

(More customer reviews)I had a lot of fun playing this game, which has a lot of good things and a fair amount of bad things in it as well. Let's start with the bad. When you get up close to a lot of bugs at once, or there is a lot of dust flying around in the game, it kills the framerate. this happens a couple times in a few different levels. also, trying to get into a multiplayer game is harder than some of the missions in the actual game itself. When you try to get into a game that has 7 out of 8 players, it's generally full, and it tells you this only after you've waited through the long loading time of getting into the game. after that, it sends you back to the main menu, which you have to sit through another little loading screen for. this can just get tedious. but, if you do happen to get into a good multiplayer game (most of which are co-op mode), it can be very fun. the bug swarms in single player are awesome to watch, and i really dont see why most game reviewers dont like this game. i have lots of fun with it, because the frame rate issue rarely happens. i recommend this game to anyone that likes [nearly] meaningless violence and bug guts.

Blizzard Entertainment DVD Collection (Cut scenes for Diablo II Warcraft III and Starcraft) Review

(More customer reviews)These CGI short films are collected from Blizzard games of the past few years - Starcraft, Diablo 2, and Warcraft 3. Great games in their own right, fans were amazed that the cinematics reached Hollywood-level quality. Early work in Starcraft was somewhat crude, but Blizzard's latest efforts are the best in the industry, showing subtle lighting effects and beautiful art design. No feature films, not Shrek or Monsters Inc or Final Fantasy, can match the wonderful mix of realism and exagerated fantasy in Blizzard's work. I strongly recommend this box set for any Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or gaming fan.
The DVDs are seperated, 1 for each game, and they come with standard extras - audio commentary for each film, concept artwork, storyboards, trailers and commercials, and even a Warcraft trivia game. I delve into each individual DVD below, but....
Sadly, this box set is less than perfect. Blizzard could have - should have - combined everything onto 1 DVD, there is so little material here. Instead, you get the same 3 DVDs already available for each of these games: the Starcraft DVD and the 2 DVDs from the collectors' editions of Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3. If you own these things already, you'll discover nothing new here.
Blizzard's greatest crime was to forget the cinematics for the Diablo 2 expansion, Lord of Destruction. You won't find it in this collection. The story for each game is hard to follow for anyone who hasn't played the games (although the audio commentary sometimes helps). Also, the enhanced resolution for these movies isn't that much of an improvement - Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 films look virtually the same, and Starcraft movie improve TOO much, such that their faults from old-age show through.
STARCRAFT: This DVD is the oldest, and the crudest, the simplest. However, it is interesting to watch Blizzard's artists grow, and the films are still entertaining, especially a Marine investigation on a science vessel that turns into a 5 minute remake of Aliens. The films from the Starcraft Expansion are considerably improved, more complex, more atmospheric. The story involves 3 races in a galactic war, with a huge cast of characters and events. The human Terrans are at war with each other when the organic Zerg horde attacks, while the mysterious Protoss wait in the shadows.The commentary will help you figure out the plot, and is entertaining in itself.
DIABLO 2: This is easily the best DVD of the 3, because the Diablo movies are the most compelling, most visually striking, and they tell a complete story, which runs parallel to the players' quest in the game. It follows the tragic failure of the Wanderer, a hero who once defeated Diablo, Lord of Terror, only to become possessed and later consumed by the demon. The films show incredible battles, one between Diablo and beautiful archangel Tyreal, and another in a burning inn, with skeletons and other nightmares leaping straight from the flames.
The game ended in a cliffhanger, and Blizzard choose not to include the films from the later expansion which resolved this. However, the teaser trailers for Diablo 2 are the best "new" material in the box set, because they show things you won't find in the game. There is also some early Blizzard CGI work, from Diablo 1 and Warcraft 2. Watch this, THEN watch Starcraft, and you'll understand why we were so excited when SC first came out.
WARCRAFT 3: While WC3 is the newest and technically the best of the DVDs, I feel that the artistic direction was somehow a step backwards for this game. The WC3 films are bright and very, very beautiful, but somehow they don't stand as "tall" as Diablo 2.
Warcraft 3, like Starcraft, has multiple races at war with each other. The human kingdoms are fighting each other when the Undead Scourge attack suddenly, all while the mysterious Night Elves wait in the shadows (sound familiar?). The orcs travel on a journey of racial freedom, and eventually join forces with the Elves and Humans to drive back a demonic invasion from another dimension, the Burning Legion.
Most of the films are very good, but those that feature the lord of the Burning Legion are boring, especially the climax of the story and the game, which was a major letdown. The audio commentary is also boring, getting lost in obscure technical details and not telling enough of the story to follow along. A Warcraft trivia game is a nice extra, though.
