(More customer reviews)This is a standard plug and play usb dual action game pad. It would probably actually work with a windows running machine, as the drivers necessary for it to work are recognized by games that recognize game pads. It should be noted that some of the other reviews quote that Quake 4, Doom 3, and Call of Duty games don't work with the game pad. It should be noted that Quake 4 and Doom 3 were not designed to work with gamepads, and only through the use of a third party software can they be made to recognize game pads. Also, though I'm not sure if this is the case for the the most recent Call of Duties released for Mac, I remember both 1 and 2 were again gamepad incompatible.
I've owned one for a little over a year and a half, and found it durable and easy to use. It's main issue, when there is drift in the stick or the d-pad, is general a software error, not a hardware one. Many of these problems can be fixed by pressing the button that swaps d-pad and left analog's functionality, and requires some patience to understand when that doesn't work, it's probably the software, which quick google searches generally reveal.
It works well with all mac emulators that are currently at a release stage, though notably not at the present time with most emulators that are in beta and pre-beta forms. Of the emulators that are at a release stage, the only one it is noticeably wonky with is sixtyforce, though a recent release of that emulator seems to have fixed that problem entirely.
I'm buying another, presently, as my last one broke due to the number one cause for hardware to not work as intended, human error. This may be of note to some though. Like all game pads, over time dust and other detritus will collect around the buttons and in the wells. Make sure to clean your game pad (and mice with balls and trackballs and keyboards) regularly to avoid this buildup destroying the device sooner. Keeping the device clean will allow it to last a good long time.
Mine met it's end at the hand of careless soda putting down, resulting in a full shower in ginger ale. Despite this, the controller still works, but several of the buttons just aren't as responsive as they need to be for many games, and occasionally stick. Hopefully shipping will be kind to the one I've ordered.

Logitech Precision Gamepad Review

(More customer reviews)Like many others here, I use this gamepad for emulators. I am pleasantly surprised by the compatibility - it works with every emulator I've tried it with (MAME, SNES9x, Nester, Gens, VColeco, Stella). There are no drivers to install if you own Windows XP - detection is flawless.
The button action is good enough to accurately simulate the feel of, say, an SNES controller or a NES controller. The d-pad is just slightly inferior to those original controllers' pads, but only ever so (no one has truly gotten it right since the big N did in those days). The buttons have enough of a digital click to them, without going overboard. They strike a great balance between click and mushiness.
This gamepad is shaped comfortably, like a PS2 pad minus the dual analog sticks. While it is light, it is not flimsy - squeezing and twisting your hands on the plastic produces very little "give" on the thick plastic parts.
I also like the pad aesthetically. The dark blue plastic is handsome and the shape is pleasing to the eye. This might seem silly, but if you're going to look at the thing resting atop your PC for months or years, it's at least a minor factor.
If, as is currently the case, this pad is available for $10 with Super Saver Shipping, you should not hesitate. For $10 or under, this gamepad is a steal!

This is an excellent value since it costs only a bit more than Chessmaster alone. Note the system requirement carefully, though, since the Star Wars game won't run on my non-Intel Mac, but runs superbly on my Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. (Chessmaster does run on the older non-Intel Mac, though it occasionally has some quirks.)

(More customer reviews)I'm very pleased. So far it has worked with all Mac games I've tried: X-Plane 9 (the prime reason I wanted a gamepad), HyperTank, StuntMani, RC Helicopter Simulator, Colin McRae Rally, Flat Out 2 and Halo.
I even get the 'rumble,' with the one programs I have that supports that feature (Colin McRae Rally). After many years of having a Mac computer it's something new to have access to so many games and this is my first such gamepad and/or joystick thing. And it's fun and quite a new experience at the computer: real video arcade quality with some of these programs.
On the Mac it installs itself on the System Preference Panel, so you can check that all the buttons and sticks work. The Big Warning -- thought -- is not with the gamepad but not all the software programs are so clear about how to set it up, assign the sticks (um...especially the 3-year old Helicopter simulator was a hassle to get right and still seems 'too sensitive,').
So setup for each program will take a little learning and I'd check to be sure the program says it will work with a gamepad (Bioshock Demo, for example, seems to indicate it only work with the X-box gamepad)
But, the iShockX, itself: 5-stars; plug and play; it works.

(More customer reviews)I will agree with some here. This game is involved and engaging. It does require LOTS of time to complete. You will click your finger off. This is just part of the game. The only game you can compare this to is the game it was built on...Age of Empires II. If you like AOEII, you will like this game as well. If you like Star Wars, you will LOVE this game. That is what makes this game fun, it is NOT like all the other games. I enjoyed Starcraft and Warcraft. But this game is much more than these.
Unlike others below, I have had no problems running the program in OS9 or OSx. Never crashed once. I use a B&W G3 upgraded to G4 with the stock Rage 16mb card.
At first I thought this game was going to involve "micromanagement". With the 4 resources you need, you will never look for something to do. However, I find these things necessary to the game and did not tire in collecting them. I found the standard campaigns to be challenging and fun. Frustrating at times, but rewarding. I think the thing to remember is to keep an open mind and not box yourself into thinking this game has to be like all the others. It is refreshing to have something different. Also, you do not need to just do what the game tells you. You can start a single player custom map and do what you want. The options are many with this game.
Kudos to Aspyr for the conversion of this game and the upcoming Clone Campaigns. Mac users should feel grateful and support companies like this.

Star Wars: Empire at War Review

(More customer reviews)I was surprised at how well this Mac version of the PC game performed (Intel only). Very engaging with good space and land battles (really two different games). One of the strongest points is the free-form campaign game, which gives the game some pretty serious re-playability over time.
Considering how few "strategy" type games there are for the Mac still (comparatively), this is a good addition to your library if you like the RTS genre.
Tech Note: I am running a MacBook with 2GB RAM, and it seems to run smoothly in the low-mid graphic range.

Star Wars Battlefront (Mac) Review

(More customer reviews)Star Wars Battlefront - especially due to the notorious lack of a broad variety of games for the Mac - is a great game. Of course, you need a 128 MB Ram Video Card to enjoy all the little bits and pieces, but in general it is the kind of easy play you would like to have after work...
...but dare you to play the game on holidays - like I did. I got it in the morning - and got instantly addicted to it. I played it on "medium" difficulty. Not eight hours later, I was done with both Solo-Campaigns and the good side "galactic conquer". On this speed I will have completed the game within another 2-3 hours.
Then I will be forced of either playing it again (difficulty: hard) or do instant action games...
So, Star Wars Battlefront is a must for the Mac (if you have the "recommended hardware" to fully enjoy it). BUT it is neither a real challenge for the experienced gamer nor a long-lasting investment. Five for being a Star Wars with great graphics and the great shooter - but four in total.
And by the way, in case you have purchased the game and found yourself with an invalid registration code on the back: don't panic. On the Aspyr Homepage (Battlefront, Support) you will find an auto-completion tool.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Review

(More customer reviews)Ok. I bought this for $39.95 at the Apple Store because I wanted to play the Hoth, Tatooine and Jedi Temple levels. I played the game originally on the Playstation 3, and liked it very much, but I did not buy the Sith edition which had the other levels (did not know this otherwise I would have both the Sith edition for PS3). Everywhere I look the PS3 Sith version is being scalped by crooks on eBay for $100+. So I decided to get it for my Mac and try to play the extra levels and get the story that way for only $39.95 +tx. I also have an Xbox 360, but the Xbox360 version is not much cheaper than the PS3 crooked version.
Ok. Performance. The graphics on the Mac (or computer version), is noticeably sharper and cleaner than the console version (PS3). It's pretty clear that the console version graphics are probably less detailed and "beautiful" so that it will work at a decent frame rate. But I did like the PS3 version and I thought the graphics were also good there. The Macintosh I have is a 2010 21.5" iMac. It has a 512MB Radeon 5670 graphics (decent but not great), 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz (more than enough), and a 3.6 GHz Core i5 processor (fastest dual core out there) with a 1 TB hard drive, running MacOS 10.6.4. I play the game at 1920x1080 resolution which is the native resolution of the iMac screen (21.5"). If I play at lower resolutions it just crops in on the left and right or top and bottom. I have checked the High Detail box in the start up window of the game, which I guess means max settings--adjusting the game settings is really poor since you don't really get to change anything other than resolution, unlike StarCraft II which allows you to change almost every aspect of graphics and game performance settings. The initial level in snow outside the cave before fighting the snow beasts slows down a bit but does not get jumpy. It looks very slightly like a gentle slow motion kinda thing. Once inside the cave the slow motion is gone and it's very smooth and responsive. If I try to run the game at 11280x1024 that same snow part is faster and has no "slow motion" affect. I ran it full screen and in window mode and the result was the same. There was a 25GB or so game install from the 2 disks inside which seems on the VERY large side considering StarCraft II is only about 9-10GB.
I ran Activity Monitor with the game in windowed mode and as my iMac has both hyper threading and turbo boost, I could see VERY clearly that the CPU was not working very hard. It was probably pushing 20-30% maybe 40% of the bars and never went beyond that. So where is the slow down? Real simple. The graphics card. While the Radeon 5670 with 512MB is a decent card, it is really not meant as a gamer card--for that matter neither is this iMac, but it's decent as a midrange system. There are/were better ATI systems than that. I suspect the 2010 iMac 27" with the 5750 1GB card would have done a much better job, but I could not afford a 27" iMac and I got this iMac from a friend for a used 3 moth price of $1500, who upgraded to a MacPro. But still I think it's a pretty good iMac over all, and even though it plays StarCraft II really well in mostly HIGH settings, SWFU bogs down a bit. Clearly a quad core iMac might be a better option than my dual core, but I suspect the real issue is the video card, which in my iMac is good but not great.
My only conclusion is that the game is probably not coded as well as it could be and not optimized perfectly for the Mac, MacOS X and a Radeon 5670 or only 512MB of dedicated video memory. But it still plays fine...enough...and I get the extra levels I wanted to play for only $40 instead of 2X-3X that.
I would have preferred the Playstation 3 Sith edition. If I can find a PS3 version of the Sith edition for cheap I will get it and sell/donate/toss the Mac version.
It's not a bad game, sure not perfect, but it's fun, sounds great, has super graphics and once you learn the game controls it's very manageable. Interestingly, the console version is easier to control than the computer version. There is a 360 controller option but I have not figured out how the set that up. Sure there are better games out there but for $40 on a midrange iMac 2010, it's a good game.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy Review

(More customer reviews)This is a terrific first-person shooter and it's long -- so you get a lot of gameplay. While I haven't played any of the multiplayer games, I thoroughly enjoyed single player. There are plenty of interesting missions with a connecting storyline (a Lucas Arts strength ever since Dark Forces) and if you've played other Star Wars titles like Dark Forces, it's thrilling to see many of those same environments with better graphics, including your mentor at the Academy, Kyle Katarn! Before each mission you can select weapons to use in additon to strengthening your Force Powers, such as Healing, Grip, Force Absorption, Protection, Lightning, etc. By the end you've really customized your abilities. In one of the last levels you will choose the Dark Side or the Light, and this does affect the gameplay. You also get to ride a few different vehicles, which is fun, and I like that you can save anytime.
I do have a few minor complaints -- in the last dozen or so levels you must rely almost exclusively on the light saber, while I really like using a wider variety of weapons; the faces of players are oddly flat; and even though I met the system requirements I experienced slowdowns quite often.
If you like FPSs or games in the Star Wars universe, you will really enjoy this game for Mac. May the Force be with you.
