Star Wars Battlefront II Review

I had originally played this with a friend on the original Xbox, and had tons of fun. I opted to purchase the PC version for myself, because of the "+123 Mod" which basically let all maps and game types be used together. I even had fun on the campaign, although you still stick around for the multiplayer with others or with bots (not enough games have bots!).
Not anything against the game, but the seller I got it from shipped an English 4-CD version of the game from Thailand, rather than a US English DVD version or similar. I thought it was strange.

Star Wars Battlefront: Prima Official Game Guide Review

Star Wars Battlefront: Prima Official Game Guide
Average Reviews:

One of the great mysteries about the game Star Wars Battlefront is why the manual is so incomplete. It provides only a limited subset of the keyboard / mouse commands (PC version), and it further fails to describe in adequate detail the key abilities of the different character types (e.g., pilot, scout, infantry, etc.).
I purchased the "Official Game Guide" in hopes that it might fill in some of this information, and, surprisingly, it didn't. For example, it includes statements to the effect "Use your pilot to heal other characters," but nowhere in the guide, or the manual that came with the game, does it illustrate HOW to do that. (For what it's worth: by pressing "g," you have to choose heal / repair as a pilot's secondary weapon. Then, right-click the mouse to deploy a healing kit.)
The manual does however provide useful maps and a decent description of the strategies either side of a battle might use to their advantage.
In sum, the manual that comes with the game is incomplete, at best, and this "official guide" does not fill in all of the gaps. It is surprising to me that there isn't a good summary of the keyboard / mouse commands, nor gamepad commands for other platforms.

Star Wars Battlefront (Mac) Review

Star Wars Battlefront (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Star Wars Battlefront - especially due to the notorious lack of a broad variety of games for the Mac - is a great game. Of course, you need a 128 MB Ram Video Card to enjoy all the little bits and pieces, but in general it is the kind of easy play you would like to have after work...
...but dare you to play the game on holidays - like I did. I got it in the morning - and got instantly addicted to it. I played it on "medium" difficulty. Not eight hours later, I was done with both Solo-Campaigns and the good side "galactic conquer". On this speed I will have completed the game within another 2-3 hours.
Then I will be forced of either playing it again (difficulty: hard) or do instant action games...
So, Star Wars Battlefront is a must for the Mac (if you have the "recommended hardware" to fully enjoy it). BUT it is neither a real challenge for the experienced gamer nor a long-lasting investment. Five for being a Star Wars with great graphics and the great shooter - but four in total.
And by the way, in case you have purchased the game and found yourself with an invalid registration code on the back: don't panic. On the Aspyr Homepage (Battlefront, Support) you will find an auto-completion tool.

PSP Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron Entertainment Pack - Ceramic White Review

PSP Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron Entertainment Pack - Ceramic White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I have owned the Sony PSP Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron Entertainment Pack - Ceramic White for about 3 weeks now. I never owned the original PSP, and mostly got this for "remote play" capabilities with the PS3 (e.g. remote access to your PS3 using the PSP and a wifi connection). Simply put, the PSP is AWESOME. Seriously.
The Good:
1. Aesthetics/Design/Construction.
The white slim looks and feels great. I briefly owned the black slim before returning it and getting the white one. The black looked slick, but it was a real fingerprint magnet. The white looks better, very sleek and clean. Fingerprints do not show up on it much either, which is great. The silver slim was just too cheap looking, like the silver was spray painted on, so I never considered it. Nice how the back is totally flat also, unlike the old psp. The non-spring door battery cover is fine. I was worried after reading reviews of how it is cheap feeling and fragile, but it's just fine. It is easy to open/close, gives a nice "snap" when it opens or closes, won't break if you're not rough with it (care is required), and eliminates worries about the spring door mechanism from malfunctioning. I never had an original PSP 1000, but the slim feels solid and not cheap at all to me.
2. Screen.
Very bright, nice 480x272 resolution. Movies and games just look great on it.
3. Music.
MP3s (and WMA supported also) sound great on the PSP. The visualization has about six different "patterns" that are interesting. The interface looks good, better in fact than the music player interface on the PS3, and features all the important info, and can be toggled on/off also. Recent firmware now allows for music to be played back while viewing photos.
4. Video.
Ability to run full 480x272 video off of files stored on the memory stick was a contentious issue in the first couple years, as Sony had evidently crippled video file on the memory stick to a max resolution of 320x240 in order to "encourage" users to buy overpriced UMDs. Several months ago, Sony saw the error of its ways and relented to user requests and now the PSP is fully able to play back 480x272 (the PSP's native resolution) video off of videos stored on your memory stick. Using the freeware "psp video 9," you can create video files ranging from 700mb (~1.5hrs video) to 1gb (~2hrs) that look and sound as good as a UMD movie.
Functionality is great too, with the newer firmwares you can search through your video file for scenes by varying intervals (1,2, or 5 minute), which is great since your own video files will be a single file. This is really not to be underestimated in its usefulness, plus it is really cool to use!
5. Photos.
The photo viewer is pretty cool as well, but could use a bit more customization. You can view standard file types (jpg, gif, bmp, and tiff I believe) and have a few slideshow and zoom options. The background of photos that are not 480x272 resolution is white, which cannot be changed to another color (like black), which is not a big deal but I hope Sony will allow you to use a black background in the future.
6. Games.
This is of course the main feature of the PSP. I wasn't expecting the games to be too good, but there are quite a few very good games. So far, my favorites are: Silent Hill Origins, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty/Vice City Stories, NBA 08, Outrun 2006, Burnout Legends, FIFA 08, Madden 08, Legend of Heroes, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, Daxter, Wipeout Pure, and Siphon Filter: Dark Mirror. You would be amazed at the graphics, gameplay, story, audio (music/voiceovers) this little system is capable of! Some of these are just great games.
7. Remote Play/Location Free Player.
This is the original reason I bought the PSP, to remotely (via wifi) connect to my PS3 and access the music, video, photos, and even games on it. When it works, it is just really really cool. The PS3 interface shows up on the PSP screen (which can be adjusted for quality based on the bandwidth you want to set it to -- there are five different settings), and you can play movies, trailers, photos, audio, even some games (like Lair!) on your PSP. I haven't used Location Free player yet, but basically it is like using a Slingbox on the PSP, so that you can watch TV, access your DVR, etc., on your PSP using a wifi connection. I plan to try it someday for sure.
8. Internet.
You can use the browser to surf the internet on the PSP when you have access to wifi. It works well enough, and the key input system is pretty decent for a non-QWERTY/touchscreen input system.
9. Functionality/Performance.
The much maligned battery life, is really not that bad at all. Using the PSP to listen to mp3s, watch videos, play games, I get about 3-4 hours of usage (depending on how much video/games I watch/play), which gets me through average usage easily. For longer trips, I have the 2200mAh (oem) extended battery which works great and will give me roughly 6-8 hours of usage. Incredible. The battery will stick out the back, but you can go to dealextreme-dot-com and buy a bigger battery cover (black or white) for less than four dollars. Sony will evidently release an official extended battery kit with a bigger battery cover in black and silver (no white though, booo!) for about 45 dollars sometime in the next month or so.
During gameplay, I have never had any slowdown of framerate or crashing EVER. Not once on over 14 games that I now own. Great performance. Videos and music also perform flawlessly. Load times are not that bad, and don't bother me much as it is only in the beginning mostly, and so gameplay during games is very quick.
The XMB (cross media bar) user interface is fantastic and so easy to use and rather stylish as well. Love using it. Video out to your TV is a cool feature that I have not yet used.
The Not-so-good:
1. Fingerprint magnet (black PSP). White one has no issues with this.
2. Cannot change background color to black when viewing photos.
3. Wifi is 802.11b only, no 802.11g (faster) support... yet.
4. Remote play is hit or miss regarding connectivity. Still not easy to connect to the PS3. Hopefully, Sony will improve upon this with updates. Remote on/off of the PS3 works well enough though.
5. Soon to be released extended battery kit will not include a white cover. No biggie, just go to dealextreme-dot-com to find a white one from Hong Kong (cheap too).
6. Limited audio/video codec support, including no DIVX/XVID support yet for videos or AAC for audio. But using PSP Video 9 (freeware) to convert videos works just fine to convert videos of most types into viewable 480x272 (or less if you want) mp4 video.
7. UMD spinning noise is a bit loud/harsh on the ears, but luckily it spins rarely and usually at the beginning of the game or rarely during gameplay (e.g. loading new levels, etc.).
8. Volume on audio/video playback from memory stick is TOO QUIET! Setting "dynamic normalization" under "audio" settings helps it get louder, but still it's too soft. The volume from the speakers is okay but I always use headphones so I cannot really judge it.
9. Expensive assessories. Getting a couple extended batteries, a battery charger, a nice protective case, a screen protector, some UMD cases, headphones, wrist strap, a few games, a nice memory stick pro duo (I got the 8gb one -- you won't want less than that), and the price quickly jumps up to almost PS3 range (easily over 500 dollars).
10. Cool accessories only available in Japan, including a camera, GPS, and DMB (mobile television). I don't really miss those though. Bottom Line:
As you can judge from my lengthy review, I love my new white PSP slim. It is so fun, versatile, and cool (remote play will impress your friends and family) that you will not regret plopping down some serious cash to build up your PSP slim system!

Star Wars Battlefront II (Mini Box) Review

Star Wars Battlefront II (Mini Box)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very ambitious game that tries to include nearly everything in the Star Wars universe--from Jedis and high-tech weapons to space battles and land invasions--in a single package. For the most part, it pulls this off credibly.
Gameplay: This game is primarily a first-person shooter, although it includes some simple flight simulation and strategic gameplay. The single-player campaign focuses on Darth Vader's unit, the 501st squad of Clone troopers seen in the most recent Star Wars movies. Over the course of about 16 missions, you'll go from classic location to location, fighting against rebels, Wookies, droid armies, Jedi, and others as you tighten the emperor's grasp upon the galaxy. There are a couple truly great missions. For example, the best mission of the campaign was a reenactment of the capture and invasion of Princess Leia's ship, as seen at the beginnning of Episode IV. It's an intense, nearly perfect rendition of the movie scene, with Vader and his army of stormtroopers entering the captured ship through a hole blasted in its hull and battling it out with rebels. Overall, the campaign is well put together and should last 15-20 hours. My major complaint is that the missions vary wildly in difficulty, from those which should be easily finished by casual gamers to others that will require as many as 10-20 attempts to complete for even a serious gamer. Needless to say, your frustration level will likely get high after trying to conquer Hoth (the last and toughest mission) after the tenth failed attempt.

The game has three gameplay modes. First, there are space battles. Generally, these are well done. The ships are detailed and scaled well, and you get an opportunity to fly many different kinds of craft. You can even land inside of an enemy capital ship, destroy vital systems, shoot it out with enemy soldier, and even fly off in an enemy ship. The flight simulation feels a lot like the old X-wing and TIE fighter games, but with vastly improved graphics. The second part of the game--and the major focus--is the land battles. These involve fighting to control certain points of the map, which produce reinforcements for your army. As long as you have reinforcements, you respawn after dying and can choose from among several classes to return as (e.g., trooper, engineer, scout, etc). If you hold certain captured points, you'll be able to respawn as a hero character like Vader or Boba Fett. These characters are powerful, but not unstoppable, and they are usually appropriate to their environment. Playing as a Jedi is enjoyable, but does not have the same depth of control and tactics as Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy. Still, the entrance of a hero onto the scene definitely gets noticed.
The third element of gameplay is a Risk-like game called Galactic Conquest mode that allows you to fight a computer enemy on a map of 15 planets. The object is to conquer all the planets (classic Star Wars places like Hoth, Kamino, Tattooine, etc.) and destroy the enemy fleets. It's a decent diversion for a while and should give the game some replay value. Additionally, there are various skirmish and quick-play modes. One of the draws for this game is the multiplayer capacity, which is probably quite fun though I haven't played it (I'm strictly a solo gamer).
The game is well polished, and I experienced no bugs in the campaign except that I never managed to get the imperial officer's chaingun to work. The instruction book is thin but provides the necessary basics, and there is a decent in-game tutorial. Unfortunately, the game does not allow any saves within missions, which will be a bit annoying during a few of the tougher campaign missions. However, the interface is clean and understandable and all of the controls can be customized for a keyboard, mouse, and/or gamepad.
Finally, I feared that the AI in this game was going to be bad, based on things I've read. However, it's quite acceptable in most circumstances. Enemy computer opponents will hide behind cover, try to outflank you, dodge and roll, snipe at you, and so forth. Computer allies usually hold their own when the odds are even, but the game really wants the player to be the star here, thus you'll be doing much of the killing, capturing of points, and saving the day. So, the AI is not bad per se, it's just geared toward making the player the center of attention.
Graphics: The game looks very good. Character models, ships, terrain, and special effects are all convincing. The game has a number of cutscenes from the movies. Also, on a mid-range PC (3ghz Pentium, 1GB of RAM, Geforce 6600GT), I experienced no lag or studder in framerates, even with a lot happening on screen.
Sound: Everything was fine in this department. The grand Star Wars score played in the background at appropriate times, and all of the weapons, ships, voices, and so forth sounded as they should.
Overall, I recommend this game to anyone into the Star Wars franchise or interested in first-person shooters. If you only play the single-player component of games (like me), I would suggest waiting until the price of the game drops to about $30. This game really does beg for an expansion which could add another campaign, some more planets to add to the Galactic Campaign mode, more ships, weapons, etc. If you like playing multiplayer, then the current price ($40-$50) is a bit more justified.

Star Wars Battlefront II takes the best-selling Star Wars video game of all time one Imperial-walker step forward with all-new space combat, playable Jedi, and never-before-seen environments straight out of the Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith movie. Fans of the original Star Wars Battlefront will also enjoy an all-new single-player experience that takes players through an epic, story-based saga where every action the player takes impacts the battlefront and, ultimately, the fate of the Star Wars galaxy.

Battlefront II improves upon the original game's single-player experience with open-ended, mission-based objectives inspired from all six Star Wars films. The compelling storyline spans more than 16 new locations, many from the Episode III movie, including volcanic Mustafar and the space battle above Coruscant. All-new classic movie moments complete the Battlefront II experience, as players battle within the interior of the Death Star and visit Princess Leia's blockade runner, the Tantive IV, as seen at the beginning of Episode IV A New Hope.

In addition, at certain key moments within the battles, players can earn the opportunity to wield a lightsaber and use the Force as a Jedi. For the first time ever, Battlefront players can engage in space combat and, during the same battle, board enemy ships to attack from within. Starting on foot inside a capital ship, players can enter the starcraft of their choice and travel into space to dogfight with the rival faction. From there, they can dock within the enemy's capital ship, overtake the ship's command posts, man its turrets to disable its shields and destroy it from within! Or, they can simply stay inside their own capital ship and defend it from attacks and enemy fire. The choice is theirs.

I got the chance to get my hands on the full version, and I can easily say this is another quality game from LucasArts! Combine some of the best new first-person shooters with Rogue Squadron, and this is what you have here.
You get to play as either a Rebel or Imperial in various famous Star Wars locations from all the movies (and books/games too). There are different types of characters, from soldiers to snipers to special forces.
The first person controls are excellent, but I found flying the aircraft (eg: X-Wing, Tie) to be a little difficult with the mouse and keyboard, but you might get the hang of it after some practice.
You get to control various vehicles and ships too, such as X-Wings, Ties, Gunships, Speeder Bikes, AT-STs, and AT-ATs. Nothing beats driving an AT-AT in snowy Hoth bearing down on Rebel scum, watching them run as you pick them off. You feel the slowness and how heavy the AT-AT is as you drive it. On the other hand, you feel the pure speed of a speeder bike on Endor as the backgroud blurs while you fly through the forest. Great sense of speed there.
The graphics are very good. Not on the level of the newest such as Doom3, but are top notch. And you have the classic Star Wars sound effects and music tracks that are unforgetable.
If you are a Star Wars fan and a gamer, this won't disappoint.

First off, I would like to say that if you have any doubts about this game..buy the Star Wars Trilogy DVD collection because it comes with a free demo of SW:Battlefront. Let me just say that this game is probably the most incredible game I have ever played for the xbox (except KOTOR). In Battlegrounds you can re-live all of the battles of any of the movies! There are a ton of planets that you can journey to to fight your enemy. Theses planets are: Hoth, Tatooine, Endor, Yavin 4, Kashyyyk (Wookie homeworld, also in KOTOR),Bespin (cloud city), Naboo, Kamino, and others.
Now for the units.. It took me about 25 minutes before I could actually decide what unit I wanted to be. The choices are vast in numbers and all have tons of advantages in their own ways. I wound up picking the Republic Pilot, because I loved flying. My second choice, however, would have been the Republic Sharpshooter. The Classes are: Alliance, Republic, Separatists, or the Empire. The Units for each Class vary greatly, and each one is unique!
There is a single player on this games, and you can go head to head, or do conquer missions. The SP is a good idea to play at first just to get used to the controls and the surroundings at first. However, if you have Xbox Live, things just got better. You thought that you had a lot of choices with the units...well, that is nothing compared to what you can do on Live! You can play your favorite battles with up to 16 other players and customize everything you want. You can chat with your allies or taunt your enemies throught the live communicator.
PROS:
- Excellent graphics
- tons of worlds to choose from
- Tons of units, and space ships available
- Excellent depiction of the battles that took place in the movies
CONS:
- None (except if you dont have Xbox Live...get it...this game might not be totally meant for Live....but the best battles are fought over Live and you are missing out without it!)
Overall..GREAT GAME one of the best from Lucasarts yet!

Well these things have been said over and over so I will spare the you the repititious "this is the sequel to the best selling star wars game" stuff that everyone feels so necassary to include in their reviews.
Instead let us get down to this game itself and not the series history as I'm sure many of you are well aware of.
Battlefront 2 is an epic title from the explosive opening to the "oh whys it have to be over" finish. Any fan of the first game will undoubtebly love this game, especially on xbox. Seriously, what fan of BF1 wouldn't get excited over 4 player split screen. thats my favorite addition for sure as I have many Battlefront buddies. The fact you can now play as jedi and sith is a brilliant addition and it works great. I loved the Episode III game for its playable jedi and awesome lightsaber action. I gotta say though, BF2 does the whole jedi thing much better. Now I'm not raggin on ROTS, I gave it 5 stars. But really, the addition of lightsaber weilding characters is not just a cheap gimick. Its done very well. Space combat is another great addition to the BF universe. And although its recieved tons of hype, it doesnt need a whole lot of explaining. you fight in space battles now such as the ones from episode 3 and 5. Its all great and feels like rogue squadron did on the n64...awesome. There is a storyline but seriously Im more into the action than a storyline. For some this will seem to be a big plus, and justifiably so, the story is handled very nicley too.
Graphicly BF2 is all that it can be on the xbox...wonderful. I liked BF1's graphics alot, and these are so much better. All the new weapons, ships, planets, characters, their all here, in mass proportion. This is truly the complete Star Wars action game. You've got Naboo, Tatoinne, Coruscant, Utapu, Fellucia, Mustafar, Dahgoba, may more. Play as Boba and Jango Fett, Obi-Wan, Mace, Anakin, Vader, Yoda, many more, including the trechorous bothan spy. You must get this game if your a fan of Star Wars or just searching for a great action title.
I hope this review was helpful to you and I gaurentee if you like Star Wars you will love this game.

I love this game. I totally understand where many of the negative reviews are coming from...but as a person who only plays games once in a great while, I must say that I thoroughly enjoy this title.
It's easy to learn and you can just jump right in a play for ten mins or 5 hrs and not get bored...granted, if I played 5 hrs a day every day for a couple weeks this game would get old REAL fast...but it's certainly a solid game with good graphics.
If you are a Star Wars fan but not a gamer (as I am), this is a great game for you.

Star Wars Battlefront II Review

Star Wars Battlefront II

Anyone who's a Star Wars junkie will tell you how they've imagined fighting as Darth Vader or Skywalker or Boba Fett would be. Pretty darn great. Star Wars Battlefront 2 not only allows you to do all that - albeit in a pretty short amount of time - but it gives you what the first game didn't. Space dogfights. And can I just say, Boo Ya?
In brief, the game is a blast - though not something you'll be playing all the time. It's a game you have to savor and then let rest for awhile so you won't get tired of it. Although it is a great game, it's repetitive. Shoot shoot shoot, die die die, upgrade, upgrade, upgrade, and after awhile, well, you feel like popping a different disc in. But when you're enjoying yourself and are really getting into it, it's an amazing game. The graphics are much better, though in online play, the same lag erupts like a bad dream. There are far more weapons and vehicles, and best of all, it doesn't take 3 minutes to traverse the landscape anymore.
As for the Jedi Heros coming into play, you can't pick say Darth and run around hacking off your enemies at will. During a point in the game, assuming youve accumulated enough points from killing people and being a hero, blah blah, you will get a prompt asking if you wish to play as the hero of that map. You pick yes, and you respawn as that hero. The only rule from here on now is, you gotta kill as many of the enemy as you can without getting hurt too much. Once you've taken too much damage, the hero will kneel out of the battle and you're back as one of the grunt Clone Troopers or whatever. This goes on until the battle is finished.
This is a great game that gives for lots of enjoyment until you get sick of fragging AI. Then you might want to hop online and frag. Which is fun...unless you tend to die alot. An upgrade from the first one in many ways. A good buy.

Very good, all the games work great and are very fun to play. SW:RC has a very very good modern FPS feel complete with door breaching, camera movement, excellent AI, and more.
SW:BF 1 & 2 are very fun games that have all the Multiplayer modes available in single player so yeah its awesome.
Definitely a must buy.

Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron Review

Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As this game's lengthy title suggests, Renegade Squadron is just the latest in a long-running line of Battlefront games, which in turn owe a lot to the Battlefield WWII games. It's all about running around a virtual battlefield with different soldiers and their vehicles -- and is about as close to playing with Star Wars toys as you'll get in a video game, even more so than the Lego games. Claims that this is exclusive to the PSP are technically true, but remember that the same kind of game is available elsewhere on the PS2, XBOX, Windows, and Macintosh, in arguably better form (Star Wars Battlefront II).
The PSP already has a similar game to this, in the form of Star Wars Battlefront II (2005). That well-intentioned port pushed the PSP farther than it could go, with clunky controls, slow framerates, and local-only multiplayer, which was the kiss of death for a game primarily designed for online play. It still sold well and can be found cheaply, but Renegade renders it irrelevant. In single-player mode, Renegade Squadron is one of the first game to use the full 333 MHz of the PSP's clockspeed. In multiplayer mode, it drops to the usual 222 MHz to conserve power, but because of a few smart design choices, raw power isn't absolutely needed for a great experience.
What's new here? The biggest change is in the controls, which are greatly improved over the PSP version of Star Wars Battlefront II. When you're on the ground, you can holding down the R button to lock your sights on an enemy, letting you circle around him without losing your aim. While you're flying around in space (in X-Wing and TIE Fighters, as well as the Millenium Falcon), you can autoselect a target with one button, and pressing another will enable an autopilot to point you in the right direction. Since the autopilot follows lines of sight only, you'll still need to use your brain to maneuver the 3D objects in the space scenes. These changes are well-suited to the handheld, and while they make things easier, the tactical challenges are still present. I'd rather fight against my onscreen enemies than the controls of a game!
The other main difference between Renegade Squadron and the previous iteration on PSP is the inclusion of Infrastructure multiplayer. In other words, you can play on the internet with strangers, using a Gamespy-powered server explorer, much like the console and computer versions of the game. I didn't notice any significant lag when playing online, and there were plenty of opponents.
Other nice touches: the short (took me about 3 hours) campaign story is typical Star Wars, interwoven with events and characters from the films. You rescue Ackbar, you fake out the Emperor, and there's a lot of Han Solo fan service such as "Greedo shot first" in-jokes. Like most SW stories, it doesn't take many risks, except for the scene where you infiltrate the Emperor's home and smash up his holy relics, Taliban style. It's told with beautifully painted panels, which are partially animated (more than a pop-up book, less than a cartoon). Voiceovers and sound effects are of typically high LucasArts quality. Character customization is simple yet richly integrated into gameplay, forcing you to to choose the balance of health, firepower, speed, and other attributes based upon the needs of each mission.
If you've enjoyed other versions of Star Wars Battlefront, is this worth getting? In my opinion, the fixed controls and fully developed multiplayer makes this the best portable version of this kind of game yet. It can't compete with PC and console versions (with higher resolutions, better controls, and more robust online play with voice and keyboard support), but it's easily the best Star Wars game to come along since SWBF2. It's a great little game and if you're a Star Wars fan with a PSP, you should have it already. If you don't yet have a PSP, there's a white, slim PSP with a Darth Vader silkscreen packed in with this game, too!

This game is lots of fun. Gameplay is smooth and the DVD quality is very high. The game still has support from the manufacturer. There is an avid on-line community which loves to play this game, even though it debuted several years ago. I think it has to do with a combination of the Star Wars mythology and how much fun this game is to play. I originally bought this PC game a few years ago in the CD-ROM version. I now have the DVD version on my laptop. My son and I go online together and play this game. Sometimes we are on the same side, sometimes not, but we've had a lot of laughs playing this game. He gets a kick out of "whacking" the old man! Some people may consider this violent but we treat it like a virtual paintball game (there is no animated bloodshed).
Highly recommended! Best $10 you can spend on a game.

Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron Review

This is the second best Battlefront out of the 4 that have been made diregarding the mobile iterations. Basically, it was the product of the cancellation of BF3 and shares many of the same elements like gameplay aspects, story, and characters. This is to date the only Battlefront game in which you can transition between space and ground, and the second battlefront in which you can use a starfighter(not a snowspeeder) to strafe and have dogfights in the air This works surprisingly well, making the game a blast to play, especially online. Every single planet that was included in other installments that features in this game has been completely redesighned for the better.
**If you are not a big time fan of Star Wars, You probably wont understand this paragraph and the next paragraph, so go ahead and skip)
Like say Coruscant: originally, the level was set in the Jedi Temple but now, its set in a plaza and street area and is based off of the ground battle(you only see the space battle in Episode 3) of Coruscant featured in the original clone wars microseries, and the book Labyrinth of Evil. Another thing featured in Labyrinth of Evil and only briefly during the Order 66 montage of Episode 3 is the Neimoidian purse world of Cato Neimoidia. Cato Neimoidia, along with Vjun(featured in comics, books, and the game Jedi academy), and Dantooine(mentioned in Ep 4, featured in comics, books, and KOTOR along with some other games). This is far less new planets than I thought there would be(Renegade Squadron had around 5 or 6 and they were not brought back as cool as they were). Dantooine is following a trend that Renegade Squadron started(Korriban with it's Sith Academy area) by including another area created in the game KOTOR on the planet Dantooine. On Dantooine, you can find the remains of the old Jedi enclave which was a cool feature, but th strange thing is is that it looks like a cave with streams and crystals(lightsaber crystals I assume) everywhere.
There are many new heroes in this game like Pantoran Jedi Master Ferroda and Rahm Kota's former apprentice Falon Grey. Also, their are three variations of two characters X1 and X2: Clone, Rebel, Jedi for X2 and Arc trooper, shadowtrooper/Emperor's Hand, Sith Lord for X1. X2 is the protaganist and X1 is an ally early on but rather predictably falls to the darkside(I'm keeping my lips sealed after that as to what happens). Rahm Kota is also featured as a cameo and playable character, but ingame, he never seems to recognize the death star on that certain mission, and he never mentions Starkiller(Galen Marek). He still is blind and has white eyes. There are special NPC's(in story) that is intriguing and should bring back memories if you ever played Dark Forces on PS1, but I wanna keep that one a surprise.
The story. It's awful. It tries to be good and has potential, but there are tons of plot holes in it. enough said
As far as vehicles, their are less in her than in Renegade Squadron. No Speeder Bikes, AT-TE's, and only two types of starfighter for each team rather than 4 or 5. It's not like they are not there, for every single type of Tie fighter in the BF(includin Tie defenders) series is featured in story mode, but not in anything else.
That promised 'deep customization' is nowhere to be found. The game features only two new weapons and the exact same character models as Renegad Squadron. So basically, LucasArts was lying the entire time. Classy.
As for graphics, it may not look it when you look at pictures, but the graphics are muc better. The movements in this game are the most fluid of the entire BF series. and the Death Star is easilly the most graphically amazing level in the game. It looks a lot like The Force Unleashed on PSP on that level.
The controls take getting used to because the Renegade Squadron-esque controls are worse in this game. This is the primary reason that Elite Squadron has bad reviews. Luckily, the alternate controls are somewhat fixed from the mess they where in Renegade Squadron. It now has a somewhat sticky reticule and it take around ten second to auto-level rather than around 4 in RS. It is the best way to play the game IMO.
And so that wraps up my lengthy review.

Star Wars Battlefront II Review

Okay, so few people will probably even see this as this game is several years old now but why not, right?
I actually bought this game when it first came out but after several moves I lost one of the several disks and the instruction manual so I was unable to re-install it. This is a cheap replacement and it works just as well...plus it's just one disk which is very nice. You don't have to sit there during 10 minutes of installation waiting for the "please insert disk.." prompts.
The game itself is fun and you get to fight in famous Star Wars locations like Hoth, The Death Star and The Jedi Temple. You even get to fight in space battles.
In the first Star Wars Battlefront, heroes would assist you in the battle but you could never play as them. in this game you have the option of being able to play as one of the heroes from the films.
There are several methods of play as well. You have the main story-driven campaign where you follow the 501st legion from the early days of the Clone Wars to the end of the Empire at Endor. Each mission has different objectives. The maps are different enough and the objectives are different enough to keep the game interesting.
Then there is the galactic conquest mode. This is a new mode for this game and you pretty much get to play as one of the four factions in two different wars (The CIS/Republic in the Clone Wars or the Empire/Rebellion in the Civil War). You'll have to build fleets, capture planets and buy new types of units or bonuses. This is a fun mode but it can get repetive especially as the computer may seem hell-bent on capturing one planet and you'll end up fighting that one battle over and over.
another mode is free play. You can pick whichever maps you want to play on and the mode of play; capture the flag, assault, etc. This is fun if you like certain maps more than the others or if you don't want to invest your time in the campaigns.
Of course there is online play though I don't play online so I can't talk about it.The AI in this game is decent enough. You don't really have control over your side so you can't really coordinate attacks or anything. Basically, it's up to you to win the day. The space battles are fun but they too can get boring and it would have been nice if they had spent more time on these.
Overall, this is a fun game, even if it is 3 years old.

Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron Review

Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron

You begin playing this game as a stormtrooper named X1 (or X2) both X1 & X2 are the first storm troopers in the Star Wars universe, or something like that, and you are given missions (stages) to run through and complete. In the first few stages you are playing during the time of Star Wars Episode 1, and progress through each chapter of the trilogy to beyond Return Of The Jedi where as you progress your skills get better and better where you start as a weak like storm trooper and eventually become a Jedi Knight. Tho the missions are not part of what is seen in the Star Wars saga, as you are not in control of Luke Skywalker or anyone like that. This is kind of like "Shadows Of The Empire" where you are in control of someone else that is more an unseen storyline from the movies.
Most of the gameplay is a type of birdseye view of your character where you run him around to blow away the bad guys and reach certain areas of the stage. You also obtain 4 different sets of weaponry, where you have your main weapon that does not run out of ammo, and you have a secondary weapon that does more damage then the regular one, but has limited ammo, as well as another weapon that is usually a bomb of some sort. As you graduate through the game, you unlock these weapons where there are markers in the game that you can switch between these weapons as various different objects from the 4 sets of weapons are needed. However, by the time you have finished the game, this method seems almost useless and annoying making you wonder why you cant just toggle through the 8 weapons, 8 alternate weapons and 8 alternate bombs/ect.
There is also stages where you are in control of an X-Wing, Speeder or Snow Speeder and things like that, where you simply just fly around and shoot tie fighters and turrets and things in space.
There is more to the game play then that, but I think that is enough info for this review.
So is the game any fun?
For a nDS game, it's not bad. But like many of these kind of games, it falls into that well known class where it is fun/ok while you are playing it, but once you beat the game, there is no replay value due to lack of options to keep you interested. The things you unlock in this game besides weapons ect, are completely useless. there is a gallery to view the still photos you see during the campaign of the game. And about 17 achievements to earn that are worthless and unrewarding. Some of the achievements are pretty pathetic, actually, most of them are. Achievements like kill 20 storm troopers, advance to this level, and things like that make no sense as you have to defeat all the storm troopers on the stages or else the gates and doorways for level progressing won't work anyway, so why bother to make that an achievement when it's something that will happen anyway? weather you want it to or not. It may as well have achievements like "you turned this game on" - "You used the A button" - "You farted during gameplay". Those things are just not very well thought out.
The other thing is once you have beaten the game, there is no desire to replay the whole thing again. And there are no new modes, levels, weapons, or anything at all to unlock once the game is completed. And even worse, there is no level select when you beat it either. If you want to go replay a mission, you have to start a campaign again and start from the beginning.
I have no idea about wifi or 2 player modes, I have only played 1 player and have no desire to check those modes out.
So, if you plan to check this game out, coughROMScough is your best bet. If you want to buy it, well, if you are a die hard Star Wars fan and just have to have it, then ok, but if you are thinking this might be a fun game to try, then I suggest you do not pay a lot for it. It will only take you about a day or two to finish the whole thing, and you will be disappointed in the lack of replay value that is next to none.
