TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball (Two-Disc Set) Review

TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball (Two-Disc Set)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Anyone who grew up in the 1960s and especially the 1970s has probably played a game of pinball at least once in their lives. At its core is a simple game of hitting a little ball with a couple of paddles controlled by two buttons but it also requires a certain amount of skill and hand-eye coordination to keep the ball in play and rack up as large a score as possible with three balls. Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball documents the demise of Chicago-based Williams' pinball division which, at one point, controlled 80% of the market.
Tilt traces the development of a pinball machine that would take the medium into the 21st century and how it succeeded and failed with legends from the industry and from within Williams telling the story. It also takes us step-by-step through how a game is designed, from initial concept to the finished product. Ultimately, bad timing and licensing the wrong franchise (Star Wars: Episode 1) killed off this new kind of pinball game before it had a chance to grow. Maletic tells a fascinating if not tragic story about the end of an era that is accessible to the casual fan as well as the diehard gamer.
The first disc features an audio commentary by the film's director Greg Maletic. He says that he wanted to make this film accessible to non-pinball fans. He talks about various aspects like the opening credits and the music (inspired by Les Baxter). Maletic cites the Robert Evans documentary, The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002) as the primary influence on his own. Like that film, his has a definite bias. Maletic makes some good observations on this decent track.
The second disc features a staggering six hours of deleted scenes organized in the follow fashion:
"Highlights" allows you to view the best bits of the documentary without having to watch the whole thing in the form of easily digestible soundbites.
"Inside Pinball" features two segments that explain the evolution of pinball and how a machine is designed and assembled in more detail.
"Inside Pinball 2000" features a more detailed look at its origins, how it was made, marketed, and how it failed.
"Inside Williams" features more stories about this company including the demise of its pinball division and a tour of the factory in 1999 as they were assembling the Star Wars: Episode I machine.
"Inside the Industry" takes a more in-depth look at the pinball industry including the boom and bust of the 1990s. There are longer interviews with legends Steve Kordek (who designed nearly 100 machines) and Larry DeMar (who designed the video game Defender and the pinball game Black Knight).
"Lost Machines" takes a fascinating look at obscurities like Bally's Pinball Circus, Wizard Blocks and Playboy, machines that for whatever reason were unreleased with only one or two in existence. There is footage of these machines in action.
"Tributes" features pinball designers giving shout-outs to their contemporaries and mentors as they talk about who they admire in the business.
"Expo Speech" features footage of game designer George Gomez speaking at Pinball Expo in October 1999 about Pinball 2000 with a Q&A session afterwards. This speech was made three days before Williams shutdown their pinball division and Gomez was aware of this going up to speak.
"Cast Discussion" features audio of various designers talking about a wide variety of topics like Sega Pinball, the shutdown of Williams' pinball division, industry repercussions, and so on.
Also included are "Graphs and Statistics" of pinball machines sold, sales, etc.
Finally, "About Tilt" includes a featurette about the special effects used in the film and a trailer.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) Review

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You know, I really liked the original Mortal Kombat. Sure they ripped off the premise from another movie, but at least it was good (Enter the Dragon). I loved the games until the 4th one and was widely known as being one of its best and most devoted followers. So maybe all this is why my then-girlfriend's idiot stoner brother told me that he heard this movie was incredible, and I excitedly went to see it.
I'm a patient guy, and I have almost never felt the urge to walk out of a movie due to boredom (Tank Girl is the only other one I recall). But MKA here is a joke. If you really feel the need to see this movie and be surprised, then be forewarned because there are spoilers ahead.
Here's one right off the bat. MKA isn't a sequel proper to the original Mortal Kombat. The original MK was, reasonably, based on the first game. A couple future characters made cameos, but that's it. So it stands to also reason that MKA would be about the second game, the one most fans widely regard to be the best. But whereas the MK film was made at the time that part 2 was yielding to part 3, a lot changed in the extra couple years it took for this film sequel. As MK the movie was leaving theaters, MK3 the game was getting kind of a lukewarm reception, and people got sicker and sicker of it by the time MK4 came out. By now the games were in 3d and the storyline had gone from basic Enter the Dragon tournaments to all out apocalyptic robot wars and sorcerors controlling the fates of a bunch of new, generic characters. Until its decent reinventing in 2002, the MK games had hit a rough and oversaturated spot and would take 5 years to bounce back.
So here in this worst time comes MKA, which skips the best chapter of the games entirely and jumps in at sort of a story junction between the 3rd and 4th games, the worst. So we have characters from all 4 games running around and interacting, which is goofy as it is, and things get worse when sense is tried to be made of it. For example, (spoiler), in maybe the first 2 minutes Johnny Cage, a main character and semi-hero of the first movie, is summarily and unceremoniously killed off. My guess for this is because he wasn't in the 3rd game.
Soon after (more spoilers. In fact, there will be several so if you continue, do at the risk of ruining the wonderful cinematic experience that is MKA), robots from game 3 come in, negating the fact that their sole purpose in the games was to hunt Sub Zero, a character killed in the first movie. Leading the attacks by these fiends and others is Shao Kahn, who in the first movie appeared as a giant demonic face in the sky and here appears as....a masculine human being.
Making things more complicated is that elder God Raiden, played by Christopher Lambert in the original, is here played by someone else and seems to not want to fight at all, as the character has gone from wizardly power god to short haired, weasely Power Rangers nerd, giving up his immortality in the process and teaching our heroes a thing or two about friendship and courage. Huh?
Sticking things out, unfortunately for them, are Robin Shou and Talisia Soto, who play central characters Liu Kang and Kitana and who've returned from the original film. This time, neither of them are allowed to do anything much more than look shocked at the stupid story developments, and Liu Kang engages in a few fights that capture none of the magic or uniqueness of the original film. And in fact this goes for any fight in this film that I care to remember. In the original, the fights were well choreographed and showcased a good selection of acrobatic and martial arts skill. Action was conveyed through close combat, good angles, and lengthy tradeoffs. And at the very least, there was a genuine moment or two where one might say "wow, that was a cool move!". This time, a lot of the action is illusional, with the camera making quick cuts and sudden moves to sort of convey that stuff is going on. There's nary an actual hand-to hand combat scene that lasts more than 30 seconds, and when you see what else was thrown in instead, you'll want to kill someone yourself.
For example, remember the character Baraka, with his beast face and bladed arms? He's here, and in fact is joined by several identical others, who assault Liu Kang with their reflective cardboard blades in a high-flying trapeze act straight out of the circus. And what about Sheeva, 4-armed character that should have been the answer to decently done Goro, 4-armed creature of the original film? Well, whereas he was conveyed through puppeteering and animatronics, here Sheeva is played by a tall woman in generic spandex who tries to look menacing and does a couple unthreatening hops with her cheesy extra special effect arms. Jax is in here and gets a lot of screen time with his new mechanical arms, which he later just takes off and throws away once Raiden teaches him that his true power is believing in himself. No, I'm serious.
The dialogue is classic as well. Sub Zero has a three minute cameo when he interrupts Scorpion's one-minute one. He does this by literally flying through the air, absolutely still in a ballerina pose, as he glides onscreen shooting an ice blast at his adversary (I'm serious- stand an action figure on one foot, lean him forward, then "fly" him through the air-that's what actually happens). Sub has the golden line of something like "It's a trap- Shao Kahn wants you to go to him. (dramatic pause)...Don't." And when Mileena double-crosses our heroes by being clearly evil the whole time, obtuse Liu Kang asks how she was able to accomplish such a feat. Her deep and shocking explanation is a wicked laugh followed by "It was so easy". Truly engaging stuff.
Things (don't) pick up later on, when Liu Kang randomly encounters Native American character Nightwolf, who explains that Liu must harness his "animality" to succeed. Anyone familiar with the MK universe knows that the "animality" was a ridiculous player rumor which supposed that the MK games contained a method of killing one's opponent by turning into an animal and committing not a fatality but an "animality". This dumb rumor was added to the 3rd game as fan service, and apparently delighted the producers of this film enough that it was actually explained as a real, feasible occurence. "Feel your animality", N.Wolf says to Liu, urging him to harness the beast within. Mr. Wolf then briefly shows Liu how to do it, complete with wobbly wolf mask, and then asks, "pretty cool, huh?"
We who haven't left the room yet are saying "no", but oh boy do we still get a fun surprise. At the end of the film, Liu Kang fights with big masculine guy (er, Shao Kahn) after Kahn has dismissed his..uh, "brother" Raiden. Against Liu, instead of actual wanted fisticuffs, we get to see the two of them feel their animality and turn into giant, god awful stupid computer-generated beasts who do combat with each other. No, I mean it. They turn into giant computer animated beasts. And we're not talking about Gollum of the Lord of the Rings here- I mean big, shiny, plasticy-looking "we know we want to make big magical creatures but don't yet have the technology to do anything but make them eye-strainingly obvious" effects. Liu Kang could reasonably have turned into a cool chinese dragon or something, but instead winds up being this big-nosed, cross eyed, dopey King Arthur thing. Shao Kahn turns into something out of greek mythology and the two have it out. Then at the last minute Shao Kahn's sorceror dad decides he's gone too far, disgraced the family name by becoming a crappy visual effect, and makes him disappear or something. Then everyone hugs, and more or less runs far, far away.
I hope that this has been an accurate rendering of what my feelings are for this film. If you want an actual review without the sarcasm, just look at it this way: It is an insult to the MK franchise and its fans, it fails as a follow-up to the fun original MK film, it fails TERRIBLY as a martial arts film, and in general it just is a dumb waste of time, an arbitrary, thrown-together cash-in sequel. Do yourself a favor and just watch the original, and if you still crave more, go play the games. And if you do insist on seeing this movie, then at the very least inject some fun into it like trying to figure out where those Baraka masks were purchased.

If you own the NFL Films Superbowl I-III collection, you don't need to buy this item. I was disappointed. I thought it would have been produced by the Dallas Cowboys NOT NFL Films. I thought it would have included a recap of each of the Cowboys' seasons and then the Superbowl highlights. It does show all the 5 Superbowl highlight films produced by NFL Films but not a recap of each Cowboy season, only a recap of the NFL for each of those years. It is nice though to have all 5 Superbowl highlight films in one package. IF you dont already own the superbowl collection produced by NFL Films for all 30 superbowls, this is a great collection to own if your a Cowboy fan like myself.

This movie still rocks. The Reptile effects are kind of dated, but everything else... hell yes! Next to Resident Evil (One, not Two), the best video game adaptation ever. No, it ain't a life affirming oscar worthy masterpiece, but its' a damn good time, with rockin' music, excellent fight scenes and gorgeous scenery. It stays pretty close to the game (minus the extreme gore). If you dug Enter The Dragon, you'll dig this.

I had the pleasure of watching this entire video and it has some really good stuff on there. Coin-Op TV gets wonderful interviews of video game pioneers, gaming events and so much more. Highlights on this one are the pieces on the Nerdcore Calendar, the I am 8-Bit art show, and a seriously in-depth interview with the true creator of Pong (and Simon!!!) Plus, if you're a Hailey Bright fan - and who isn't - you get to see her very first Coin-Op TV interview, not to mention her audition. I really hope they make Coin-Op TV Volume 4 so we get more of Hailey.
But have to give a shout-out to Cyndee San Luis, who does a lot of the interviews on this set and is amazing. Especially when she interviews the art shows, celebrities like Kevin Pereira and a Star Wars celebration.
If you have Coin-Op TV Vol. 1 & 2, this is a no-brainer. If you don't, get all 3. Retro gamers will LOVE these episodes, and you newbie gamers should check it out too. Learn your history!

I have kids from 6 to 13 and this one is actually for my 13 yr. old as a "stocking stuffer" for xmas. He is older now but LOVES Zelda. I was able to get all the Zelda games he does not have, along with the special gameboy with the Gold Crest (even though he has the DS lite) therefore this was the perfect addition for any age group that has the DS lite games, loves Zelda, and needs cases for their games.

Apple Only Gamepad Dual Action Review

Apple Only Gamepad Dual Action
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a standard plug and play usb dual action game pad. It would probably actually work with a windows running machine, as the drivers necessary for it to work are recognized by games that recognize game pads. It should be noted that some of the other reviews quote that Quake 4, Doom 3, and Call of Duty games don't work with the game pad. It should be noted that Quake 4 and Doom 3 were not designed to work with gamepads, and only through the use of a third party software can they be made to recognize game pads. Also, though I'm not sure if this is the case for the the most recent Call of Duties released for Mac, I remember both 1 and 2 were again gamepad incompatible.
I've owned one for a little over a year and a half, and found it durable and easy to use. It's main issue, when there is drift in the stick or the d-pad, is general a software error, not a hardware one. Many of these problems can be fixed by pressing the button that swaps d-pad and left analog's functionality, and requires some patience to understand when that doesn't work, it's probably the software, which quick google searches generally reveal.
It works well with all mac emulators that are currently at a release stage, though notably not at the present time with most emulators that are in beta and pre-beta forms. Of the emulators that are at a release stage, the only one it is noticeably wonky with is sixtyforce, though a recent release of that emulator seems to have fixed that problem entirely.
I'm buying another, presently, as my last one broke due to the number one cause for hardware to not work as intended, human error. This may be of note to some though. Like all game pads, over time dust and other detritus will collect around the buttons and in the wells. Make sure to clean your game pad (and mice with balls and trackballs and keyboards) regularly to avoid this buildup destroying the device sooner. Keeping the device clean will allow it to last a good long time.
Mine met it's end at the hand of careless soda putting down, resulting in a full shower in ginger ale. Despite this, the controller still works, but several of the buttons just aren't as responsive as they need to be for many games, and occasionally stick. Hopefully shipping will be kind to the one I've ordered.

Nintendo DS Lite Mario Protector Skin Review

Nintendo DS Lite Mario Protector Skin
Average Reviews:

I bought a black DS for my son for Christmas. The black one is very prone to smears and fingerprints, and given that my son is 7, I also wanted to protect the DS a little. This "skin" is a hard shell that covers the top and bottom of the DS. After I ordered this I saw a soft skin at Walmart that I probably would have preferred from a style perspective. The soft one also had protection for the inside of the DS.
Having a black DS, this white skin is not the most fashionable (the black sides of the DS still show), but my son loves Mario and he's happy.
All in all it's a good product.

Although i never really trust the case that doesn't cover the whole ds, this cover is great for what it is for. I just love the material, it looks fancy in a way, or maybe because i always like the way the matte look.
Overall, it does what it needs to do, and for my dsi, and matches very pretty with the quality of the material. However, i do still put another case on top when i put it in a bag or when i store it somewhere else. The part that is not covered still might get scratched. If you want to use it as a protection from your hand (like getting darker or oily and such), this case is perfect, but not as storage for ur dsi, at least that's what i think. =)

I bought a $19.99 Recoil Gamepad with force feedback that was bulky & had buttons that kind of stuck when pressed. I bought three of these Tremon controllers because they were so cheap, & I ended up liking them more. Sure, they don't having mapping options, rumble feature, or analog joysticks; but they're perfect. The directional pad is easy to control vertically, horizontally, & diagonally; & the 8 buttons aren't choppy. They also include the "Turbo" feature that most gamepads have. It's too bad they don't come in other colors.

Logitech Precision Gamepad Review

Like many others here, I use this gamepad for emulators. I am pleasantly surprised by the compatibility - it works with every emulator I've tried it with (MAME, SNES9x, Nester, Gens, VColeco, Stella). There are no drivers to install if you own Windows XP - detection is flawless.
The button action is good enough to accurately simulate the feel of, say, an SNES controller or a NES controller. The d-pad is just slightly inferior to those original controllers' pads, but only ever so (no one has truly gotten it right since the big N did in those days). The buttons have enough of a digital click to them, without going overboard. They strike a great balance between click and mushiness.
This gamepad is shaped comfortably, like a PS2 pad minus the dual analog sticks. While it is light, it is not flimsy - squeezing and twisting your hands on the plastic produces very little "give" on the thick plastic parts.
I also like the pad aesthetically. The dark blue plastic is handsome and the shape is pleasing to the eye. This might seem silly, but if you're going to look at the thing resting atop your PC for months or years, it's at least a minor factor.
If, as is currently the case, this pad is available for $10 with Super Saver Shipping, you should not hesitate. For $10 or under, this gamepad is a steal!

Xbox 360 Arcade Play Wireless Controller Gaming Pack Review

Xbox 360 Arcade Play Wireless Controller Gaming Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't often post reviews online, but I was so disappointed by this product that I was moved to make an exception. Three of the four games (Lumines, Geometry Wars 2, and Bomberman) are included on a disc. The box includes a code that allows you to download Ms. Pac-Man from Live. For people who have hard drives and Xbox Live (which really should be everyone), this latter solution is the only one that makes any sense at all. You dial in the code, download the game, and it's as simple as any other XBLA game from there on out. The other three games all must be played off the disc - it does not permit you to play them like you would regular XBLA games. However the software code is largely unchanged, so that the games themselves don't recognize they are being played off a disc. Bomberman simply doesn't work - it tries to force you to download an update of the game, but because you never downloaded it in the first place, the "update" would cost the full $10, and it won't allow you to play without the update. Lumines and Geometry Wars 2 are at least playable, but I don't know if Lumines DLC is compatible. That's iffy at best and I wasn't willing to risk it. I will be calling Xbox support, which isn't something you should have to do minutes after opening the box.
In sum: it is more of a hassle than necessary, poorly thought out, and one of the four games simply doesn't work. I am extremely disappointed and cannot recommend this product.

Command & Conquer: Generals Review

Command and Conquer: Generals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge fan of the Command and Conquer series, so buying Generals didn't require any thought. We were rewarded with great graphics and amazing multiplayer gameplay.
First, the good. The graphics are quite impressive, definitely a step up from previous games. The various terrains - from snow to sand to grass to concrete - are well done. The trees sway in the wind. The units leave little tracks as they move, the construction of buildings makes you really feel like you're watching an army base get built.
The sound and music is well matched and makes the game feel realistic. Controls all work just the way you'd hope they would - after so many games they really have that down to a science.
On the down side, the usual problems in strategy gaming exist here. pathfinding isn't always perfect, units get stuck against buildings or in chasms. The campaign missions help you learn your skills but aren't extremely challenging.
Still, as with just about every game that comes out today, the built in gameplay is merely a training ground for the real challenge of multiplay. There's no way a computer could compete with the challenge posed by a real human being with experience and knowledge at the other end of the map. This game really shines in multiplayer. The three sets of units are well balanced, and if you get yourself onto a large map with teammates and opponents, you'll be hooked for months.
Skirmish mode is quite fun too, earning medals for different accomplishments.
Definitely a great game for any strategy gaming fan!
