Starchaser - Legend of Orin (1985) Review

(More customer reviews)Starchaser is a space opera along the same lines as Star Wars. You have the evil villain in a cape, spaceships blowing up each other, lasers flashing with neat noises, robots cracking jokes, heroes saving the day. You have it all. What ties it all together is a rather simple story that has been executed well. While some may find Starchaser too derivative I see a lot of charm in it.
The movie's biggest claim to fame is how they rotoscoped cell animation over computer animation to make various elements of the movie have a very fluid effect. This is especially true for the spaceships, which are pretty awesome for a movie made in the mid-80's. The rotoscoping technique gives a level of freedom of movement in the spaceship scenes that really stand out from anything else in this era. It's really a treat to watch the Starchaser weave around gun turrets and blasting away the bad guys.
The rest of the animation is close to what you saw on movies like Rock and Rule and to a lesser extent Heavy Metal. Solid cel drawings with decent to good animation, but not Disney quality. The original film was in 3D, but there is no 3D here. Probably a good thing considering 3D DVD's aren't exactly popular. The movie more than makes up for the lack of 3D and non-Disney quality with a clever script and excellent voice cast. You'll find yourself loving one or more of the characters because of the voice talents and what they say.
Now it's been said that Starchaser is just a Star Wars rip-off, and if you look for it you will probably say that too. You have a young "out of touch with the modern world" hero with a sword that cuts through about anything, a wisecracking smuggler who is also captain of a starship (the Starchaser), a prissy comic foil in the ship's computer, and a villian with all the stereotypical profiles for a space opera villain (just like Darth Vader had). In all fairness Star Wars was a rip-off of the classic space operas from the old Saturday morning matinees so keep that in mind when passing judgement. Also most who make this judgement tend to not see the things that make this movie different from Star Wars, and there is enough to do so. It's not like comparing Fisful of Dollars with Yojimbo (which are practically identical movies). More like comparing Rocky with The Karate Kid (same themes, but different approach and story path).
Now that the DVD version is finally here you can get this movie in it's original widescreen format. The only copies you could have gotten in the past were full frame and were either on VHS tape or transferred from VHS tape. Now this DVD is a no frills deal. There is no remastering to clean up the picture so you will see a fair amount of dirt, which is to be expected for a long neglected title. The sound is actually pretty good and in true stereo, but it's not Dolby Digital. There are no special features that I have found. Not even a trailer. Oh well. At least we finally have it on DVD. And the price definitely makes it worth a look.
The movie is PG for violence and mild language (very mild by today's standards). I suppose the movie can be a tad too violent for the youngest of viewers, but if they can handle Star Wars there shouldn't be a problem. If you enjoy space opera this movie should suite you just fine. If you're into animated science fiction that's on the lighter side you should get a kick out this too. Personally I love it in spite of any shortcomings others might find.

Bully Review

(More customer reviews)Bully may very well be one of the most controversial games of all time simply based on the fact that Rockstar made it. With only a name to their game, it was turning heads. People feared the worst. Mostly that the game would be as violent as Grand Theft Auto, but in a high school setting.
Let me set some minds at ease. There are no guns. The game doesn't even have any blood. Also, you can't kill anyone. Lastly, violence is rather discouraged.
You do not play the Bully. Instead you assume the role of Jimmy Hopkins, a boy trying to survive at Bullworth Academy. He's basically your run of the mill student. Your task inside the school is the same as they are for just about every student in high school. Pass your classes and stay out of trouble. Going to class actually is enforced for a time. Your classes are mini-games that you'll play. You're allowed to try and ditch class but there are consequences for not going. However, in this game you'll want to go to class just because participating in said class is actually fun, and can improve your skills. The mini games are fun and addictive. After a while it's no longer enforced, which I actually found rather sad. The aspect of going to class doesn't get nearly enough attention, but the mechanic works.
Outside of class, however, is where the game really begins to shine. If you're familiar with the gameplay of Grand Theft Auto, then you'll easily adapt to Bully. For starters, each and every student at Bullworth Academy has a unique personality. You'll make friends and you'll make enemies. The missions are fun and quite an experience. The game is original. Even better, the story sequences are filled to the brim with humor, quite simply it's one of the funniest games I've played.
In addition, you can also venture outside of the school. Jimmy can get a job to help him buy food and other things, and he's able to help people around town do some of their errands and chores as well. You'll also be able to date, go play some arcade games and plenty more. All the things most high school students do.
Jimmy isn't without a mischief. He's got a slingshot, a bat and a few other things he can use. Again, you can't kill anyone with these things, and eventually the objects will break anyway. Besides, if you beat up a kid, you have to serve detention. Part of the point of the game really is staying out of trouble.
The game also takes on a more realistic feel. There's a clock in the corner that shows you what time it is. If you're caught wandering around the school after hours there are consequences. If you stay out too late, you'll actually get tired and fall asleep.
The game looks and sounds brilliant. Fantastic voice acting really brings the story to life. The game also has some great visuals. The school and environments look astonishing.
Bully is a great game to be sure. It's almost like an interactive teenage drama come to life. A lot of the game is humorous and fun. But most importantly, it isn't Grand Theft Auto and it does stand on its own.

Army Men: Green Rogue Review

(More customer reviews)This game is cool. One bad plastic soldier, four big weapons (each one with SIX levels of upgrade, each one more devastating than the last!), one sweet smart-bomb attack, great explosions, great intro movie, and constant mayhem...!
At first I had trouble with it because I was trying to shoot everything and hit them before I die.d Then I realized that you gotta dodge first and shoot while you do. It's like the old arcade games of the '70s like Robotron and Contra... just guys swarming at you constantly, and you're layin' down the lead...
oh yeah, the other thing is you MUST pick up the same powerups in sequence to upgrade your weapon. If you keep switching weapons you never upgrade. upgrading is key and if you get all the way to max upgrade, your guy morphs into an even bigger, badder guy who takes less damage from enemy fire.

Resident Evil 4 Review

(More customer reviews)Wow was I amazed! Try it, even if you do have the gamecube version. To me, this is worth the money and time.
Leon S. Kennedy is back and it's been six years later. The president ordered him to rescue the president's daughter from a religious group. This is most likely a survival horror game mixed with action and stategy.
The graphics on the PS2 is a little different. The texture isn't as good and it looks more darker. Still it's pretty good compared to the gamecube version.
The controls is excellent. It may be a little hard to get use to especially if you played the gamecube version. It gives you behind the shoulder look of Leon so you know where to shoot better than the other RE games. The laser device is nice as well because you can shoot at different parts of the body. You can also use knife attacks and kick your enemies as well. Make sure you find the weak spot!
You can't even relax during the cutscenes! You might have to either dodge, sprint, or somehow get out of trouble. Besides killing all of these ganados (Spanish villagers), you have to protect Ashley from getting killed or captured. If so, game over. You can also buy weapons and other items from a mysterious merchant and can upgrade as well. Too bad there is no weapon swap. The ganados have different ways to attack either with a scythe, dynamite, axe, or choke you to death! There is even chainsaw ganados! Many more enemies are introduced later on in the game. The bosses also are challenging and better than ever! There are some puzzles introduced to advance the plot. There are no typewriter ribbons. There is probably more things to point out but we need to talk about the extras!
Extras in the game such as Separate Ways. Which you play as Ada Wong and you play the same time and same place as Leon. There is no switching to characters but that's ok. There are more cutscenes and few more hours for you to enjoy. The new grapple gun is introduced which is a nice feature. It helps you get around to out of reach places as well. New weapons are here such as a laser gun which can kill enemies pretty easily and can stun them. The costumes are useful and pretty cool to say so myself. Leon looks like a detective and looks mysterious like. Ashley has a suit of armor which is a good thing. It can protect herself from gunshots or get killed in any other way. These extras can be obtained if you beat the game once. Extras from the gamecube version are also on here. The Mercenaries where you have to kill enemies to score points and unlock characters. You can even get an unlockable weapon. The Handcannon in the main game! There is also Assignment Ada where you play as Ada Wong collecting five plaga samples and mostly avoid enemies instead of shooting them. Heavy item managment is a must. There is no knife attacks so use guns! More costumes, unlockable weapons, professional mode where enemies are challenging than normal mode. Another round where you have all of your possesions from the previous file. Last but not least, a movie browser where you can view cutscenes from the game and Seperate Ways.
Overall, it's a great game. Especially for the PS2. Play it, even if you have the gamecube version. Since there is more features into this. Great job to Masachika Kawata and the others. If you don't have the gamecube version, here is your chance! I played the game through about 20-25 hours including the extras.

Playstation 2 Star Wars Jedi Hunter Controller Review

(More customer reviews)I'm giving this a high rating because of the great price I paid relative to the product I got, but when you put your money down, don't expect to get the product listed above shipped to you.
I was expecting to get a controller that would let me "win saber locks with lightsaber button" and have wireless "Auto-connect technology allows up to 16 players to play without interference [...] play up to 30 feet from console" as advertised above.
Instead I got a wired controller with the same cable length as the default. The rumble feedback is stronger than default controllers, and the internal lighting is a nice touch, but it isn't wireless at all and I can't find the saber button mentioned.
Hopefully the turbo and programming functions will work as described in the manual...I'll have to try those next.

Star Wars, Episode 1: Racer Review

A fun, exceptionally fast-paced game that brings racing to the Star Wars video game universe (and more multimillions to George Lucas's coffers). But before you buy, check the system requirements carefully: while this runs fine on my brand-new iMac, I'm hearing that many older Macs aren't supported for this fast-running program. The key to watch out for in the system requirements seems to be "3-D hardware support (OpenGL compatible); iMac and newer machines require no extra hardware" (according to the system requirements on Amazon's page). That's why I give it 3 stars...the game itself would be worth five stars but it loses a couple for being persnickity and only running on Macs that were seemingly introduced last week. While I applaud LucasArts for pushing the envelope in creating the game, owners of older hardware should have a chance to run it too, and not at speeds of Jabba the Hutt.

War of the Monsters Review

(More customer reviews)It's like they took everything that I loved about the monster game genre (King Of The Monsters, Rampage), used it and improved it! So, yes you can feel the king of the monsters feel in it. But, it does it's own thing which is a lot bigger. The single player is very enjoyable and with solid A.I. and absolutely packed with features. You also have options of easy or normal, easy being challenging and normal being hard!. So far I've used Magmo and Ultra. You can really feel the differences. Magmo is super slow, but strong. He's just amazing to watch in action.
Ultra V will probably be everyones favorite. He's like using a transformer or samurai mech toy you had as a kid. Lazer eyes (Complete with the 'bzap bzap' sound effects), a plasma samurai sword and turbo boosters. Every monster I have seen so far is impressive. And, the intro is one of the best I have seen in a game in a long, long time.
The control system becomes 2nd nature within a few minutes of play and the camera is almost flawless. Playing the game with the mechs is an absolute blast. And it feels different then playing with the other monsters. It's hard to explian. Definitely, my favorite character is Ultra V. A Samurai Mech who knows Kung Fu, shoots lazers froms his eyes, has a grappling hookfor the classic 'Get Over Here' move', and a plasma sword. The sound effects of his jet boost are classic, and the metal impact his strikes and landings make are nothing short of spectacular. His Gundam voice has to be mentioned also. My friend has fallen in love with using Robo 47, the American Mech. A very cool robot if I do say so myself. Other cool ones are of course the lava monster, Magmo. Ultra powerful. The rock monster, Agamo who has the best voice in the game. His sound effects are amazing, youcan hear the rock against metal, or whatever surface he is hitting landing on.
The destruction of the city is amazing, eveything is destructible and it visually implemented to perfection. Smooth framrate throught the entire game, for both single and multiplayer modes. It's about as much fun as I have had with a game, maybe ever. It's hard to say whether it will go down as one of my all time faves, because I can't test it's staying power like that yet, but it's a blasr.
It feels like a monster movie come to life. I feel like a little kid playing it. As do my friends. Togera (the Godzilla/Beast from 20,000 feet below) has got to be one of the coolest looking monsters I have ever seen. Especially his Mecha-Togera outfit. His green fire breathe is cool as hell, a great special. I can say the same about all the monsters really. They are straight out of some great campy 50's Horror flic. The designers really captured that great work those old movies did, it makes your imagination feel great while you play. It's like a really great toy come to life. My friend I just got done playing a MARATHON session. We went at it tooth and nail late one night as his Ultra V took on my Robo-47 in an epic 'best of three' fight that took nearly an hour to complete. We unlocked a few secrets. The best being this (Not about Sweet Tooth, who is a secret character in the game!)....is that you can unlock skins! It's become apparent to me that the 4th version is either an entirely new design or an amazing offshoot to the original. This is a very cool treat in my opinion. Unlocking the 4th of each monster is almost like getting a new character. These aren't just skins, but new designs! Kudos to Incognito for including something so cool. And multiplayer, wow. Whereas bouts in most fighting games are over in a few minutes, you can make a single fight last for over 20 minutes. As you learn the levels, you start to understand how to best use the items, and can really keep things challenging. Health and energy icons spawn in specific locations to help make the fights about more than just beating on each other so their is endless replay value. This is some of the most fun I have had with a 'new' game in a long time.

Battlestar Galactica Review

(More customer reviews)Wow. I honestly cannot believe how many people are complaining about this game's difficulty. Granted, I am a seasoned veteran of flight sims, but my brother-in-law is a casual gamer and he beat the first mission on his first try. That, however, is beside the point, because if you're unfamiliar with modern flight sims in the first place, then you have no business reviewing this game. You should have sampled at least one other flight sim in the past, like Ace Combat 04, and should not have bought it based solely on your love of the show.
I'm not kidding, people. In comparison with Star Trek: Invasion and Colony Wars: Vengeance, Battlestar Galactica is a cakewalk. Take, for example, the secondary weapon system. You have a constantly replenishing supply of torpedoes and can lock on to multiple targets at once. What's more, when you gain bonus points, you earn even more torpedoes that can be fired simultaneously and can raise their agility, speed, or power, though they RARELY miss and are powerful enough (even in the first mission) to destroy a Cylon raider. Additionally, your shields recharge automatically, the Cylons are very poor marksmen, and outrunning enemy torpedoes is absolutely NO challenge.
To those who don't like the absence of difficulty settings and training missions, I suppose that's understandable. However, complaints about there not being cheat options are ridiculous. Like I said, you should have been prepared for a challenge, not a chance to tactlessly destroy everything in sight. The manual IS helpful; you just need to read it more carefully. As for saving, try exploring the menu a little. If you still can't figure it out, a prompt will appear after completing a mission. (Note: The first mission involves both defending the Galactica AND assaulting the asteroid.)
That said, veterans of the Ace Combat and Colony Wars sagas (like myself) will undoubtedly find Battlestar Galactica easier, but also very enjoyable. Missions can be replayed as well as cinematics, which are gorgeous. Graphics, sound effects, and explosions are top-notch. This is an all-around great game for those who know what to expect.

Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love Premium Edition Review

(More customer reviews)Sakura Wars is part of a long running series that, from what I have recently learned, was pretty prominent on the dreamcast and on into the PS2 era due to hybridizing dating sim elements (relationship building, player choosing responses to text prompts similar to KOTOR, and rewards/detriments for not building some kind of relationship with the other players) with solid srpg gameplay. That was a long sentence. Anyway, this is the latest installment of this game. I am not a fan of the series by any means-the previous games are all in Japanese, and I don't plan to learn that any time soon. So why did I pick this one up, and rate it so highly?
Two reasons-PS2 releases are getting more and more scarce monthly (and I love my black box), and the sheer novelty of the game. I have been at this game for a number of hours and so far, I don't regret the purchase in the slightest.
The graphics are solid (with still shots that change to reflect facial expressions and changes in situation), the voice acting is entertaining (and, if you get the premium pack, you get the full Japanese voice as well as the American on two separate game disks-that's right-YOU GET TWO COPIES OF THE GAME), the amount of engagement during conversations varies from button mashing, keeping meters up trying to be convincing, and other controller-based mini games (so you really can't get too bored with it), the transitions between fmv, conversation screens, and in game activity are really well handled, and the combat is awesome. The first fight took me nearly an hour, starting as a ground-based assault and moving to a space battle above the statue of liberty. This is where the relationship part of the game pays off, as my strong relationship with one of the other characters let us pull of a wicked group attack. Pretty ambitious stuff here.
One last note on the combat-I have to be honest here. One thing I hate about SRPGs in general is the grid-based movement and attack system. People don't move in plus signs. SW lets you move free-form, spending points for movement in any organic shape you want, in any direction you want. In the ground battle I was talking about, I had one of my party slip around the enemy up some stairs and attack from the side while the rest of the group used long range attacks. Very satisfying feature and added a lot to my sense of engagement with the game. Your space battles are done very similarly as well, though limited somewhat by dimensional space.
My only real gripe with the game is how long it takes at times to get to the action. But the setup work you are doing beforehand with party interaction makes sense, so this complaint is minimal at best.
Like I said earlier, the field is getting pretty empty in terms of PS2 games, with original releases being even more scarce. I figure if enough people buy this one Sony will get the idea of continuing this sort of thing for its loyal fan base. BUY IT-I am loving seeing this one at the top of so many best seller lists right now (even if I know the reason behind it).

However,the game play is pretty good. I have the first warship gunner and the addition to the submarine is a big plus. It was alot better then i thought it would be. I am going through the game for the second time and the levels and weapons are getting more intense. Bottom line,if you like the first,get this one.

Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing Review

(More customer reviews)This was the game that finally got me to break down and buy a PS2. I like sort of wacky, off-beat games, and this fit the bill. It combines two things I'm pretty fanatical about: Kart racing and Star Wars. Since Super Mario Kart for SNES, Kart racing has been my favorite genre. The problem is that no game has ever exceeded the greatness of the original SMK. This one certainly doesn't. The presentation of the game is great. The characters all look strange and cool with super-deformed heads. They all make snide comments, taunt, look around and are very well animated. For all the criticism of the graphics, I must disagree. I think the graphics are actually raelly pretty cool for what they are. The designers were going for a cartoony look. The characters all have different abilities, and they actually do handle differently. Plus, each character has a special powerup only he or she can use. That does encourage players to at least try all the characters. The controls are smooth, and easy to learn, but of course are alittle "floaty" and different from standard kart games, because, after all, you are *flying*. It's a little like F-Zero.
There are some problems, though. First, the game is way too short. Sure, it packs a lot of two player fun, especially in battle mode, but the one player challenge is over way too fast. I beat all the circuits in about an hour and a half. After that, there's a mirror modes, a secret racer, trying to score your best time, etc. But the the thrill is over pretty quickly. One feature that the oiginal SMK had that, to my knowledge, no kart racer has had since was the way that record times were saved for courses WHILE you played the various Cup races. In all Kart games since, the records are stored seperately and only are affected by what you do in time trial modes. That little feature added a alot, in that it encouraged players to play the the circuits over and over again. Stunt Racer FX even saved an overall time for the circuit record. That would have helped here. As it is, once you play the circuits and get first in everything (which won't take long) you are going to relegate this game to the shelf until some human challengers visit. The game is worth holding onto just for the multiplayer, though. My second big gripe is that the game is a little buggy (like most Lucasarts PC games). The third track has frozen up on me several times and caused me to have to reset my PS2. Also, there are places in the game where you can get stuck and have to restart the course. The fountain in the Sheed city is a good example. There's no excuse for shoddy work like that!
Overall, the most important things is that this game is pretty fun and you'll either love or hate the *cute* factor. I loved it. I even liked Jar Jar. It got me to actually like some of the silly episode one characters, so it must be doing something right!
As a final thought, what's up with the Obi Wan's "surfer dude" make-over??? Some of the things he says and his new found valley-boy accent are really weird and don't make much sense....

Other than sporting a really cool name (come on, you know you like "Bombad"), Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing also offers some really big heads. Seriously, some hard-core Star Wars fans might disapprove of this whimsical kart-racing game based on their beloved franchise, but the less uptight will appreciate seeing Darth Maul, Yoda, Boss Nass, and others scaled down to Tiny Tunes dimensions. The object of the game is to race around movie-inspired tracks, picking up dozens of power-ups (including speed and shield boosts and some vehicle-specific tuners), and, of course, being the first to cross the finish line. And rather than having the technical sophistication of a game like Star Wars Starfighter, the controls here are easy enough for the youngest Jedis to master.
