Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories Review

Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories

Talk about the ultimate mobile game for mature gamers who love the Sopranos and Godfather series. Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories is the perfect game for the PSP.
Let me say again - this is a MATURE game. There is sex, there is swearing, there is a LOT of violence. Anybody who buys this game for their 8 year old is making a grave mistake. It really bothers me a lot when people buy adult games for kids and say "Oh I didn't know". It clearly says right on the box. There are a TON of adult gamers out there, and we like mature games, just like we like R rated movies. These games aren't meant for kids. They are made exactly the way us adults like them - full of adult situations.
That being taken care of, this is an *incredible* game. Let's start with the gameplay. It's hard to even imagine, looking at say a DS or GameBoy game, that any handheld could produce gameplay like this. You have a fully detailed, fully laid out cityscape. You can drive down any road, walk around amongst the people, watch the rain and sun and fog roll in. The storyline is great. The missions are great. Heck, even the sidegames are great. There are hidden packages to find, rankings to achieve, races to run, you name it. You could play this for months.
The graphics are spellbindingly beautiful. It's hard to believe this is a handheld game. You get rain falling down around your car as it careens past easily identifiable stores on a road, while pedestrians stroll down the sidewalks. From shooting tasks, to driving races, to handling a number of other situations, the graphics draw you into this world.
Let's talk about audio. There is a great selection of "radio stations" to listen to as you drive around. The voice acting really draws you into the story, to relate to the various characters involved. I've always loved the audio on the GTA games, and this is no exception.
Yes, this game requires a 2.0 update to run. The update is INCLUDED ON THE DISK. Anybody who has trouble finding it must be missing some basic computer skills. It's right on the main disk menu when you put the disk into the system. It's free, it's included, it's easy.
I can't say enough good things about this game. Let me try to figure out some down sides. Hmmm, well it's on a small screen. Heck, that's the whole point, that it's on a portable system. When I go on trips, I can bring it along with me. I think that's fantastic, to have a GTA system to bring on the plane or bus. I *did* find the storyline in general to be on the annoying side, truth be told. I really liked the original GTA3 storyline where you were a valued employee moving up in the ranks due to your skill. I found it frustrating in this one to play in essence an "uppity jerk" who is constantly put down either by his own mob buddies or his mom or other people. It didn't make the game nearly as enjoyable for me. This is my leisure time after all, to endulge in fun dreams. My fun dream isn't of being berated and harassed. That being said, the mom in the Sopranos always drove me completely insane too. You have to give a writer the leeway to write his own story, and if that's what he wants to write, you go with it.
This is a must-own game. It's a game for ADULTS. But it's a game with epic scope, great graphics, and great gameplay. Highly, highly recommended.

It's time to return to Liberty City, the town where all the rules were broken as Grand Theft Auto 3 revolutionized gaming and made the GTA series the biggest franchise on the planet. The PlayStation Portable edition is an all-new game set in the seedy, sprawling underworld of Liberty City. Just when you thought San Andreas was all you needed in your gaming life, Rockstar today announced that it is working on a brand new Grand Theft Auto title for the PSP. As youd expect from the highly secretive Rockstar, little is known about this latest in the GTA series except that it will take place in the streets of Liberty City (from GTA III) and that it is being developed by Rockstar Leeds. What you can be sure of, is that with the power of Sonys sexy new portable behind it, GTA on PSP wont be just a rehash of the 1997 original. Battalion Wars 2 Review

Battalion Wars 2

I suppose this game ("BWii") technically falls into the category of real-time strategy, a genre seemingly poorly suited to consoles, but Kuju has designed the interface around a third person shooter mold. You exist on the battlefield, not hovering above it, in any of your choice of the individual soldiers or vehicles assigned to you on a mission and can switch between them at any time. You can run around, jump, dodge, and shoot as that individual unit but to be honest this is incidental.
Your first priority in Bwii is commanding all your units as a cohesive force via selecting between the unit icons at the bottom of the screen with the WiiMote d-pad. To that end you use the individual you are "possessing," so to speak, to target the enemies you want the d-pad selected unit to attack. So, for example, I am commanding through the eyes of my mobile anti-air (AA) unit but see enemy bazooka troops coming. If I have assault troops I can select their icon at the bottom of the screen and then target the enemies with my AA unit and push A. The assault troops will then attack the enemy bazooka troops. I could even jump into one of the assault troops and go after the bazookas myself.
The point of this convoluted system is to make sure you pick the right types of units to attack the enemies. In fact, that seems to be the sum total of strategy in BWii especially given that the several factions are distinguished only by the look, not the capability, of their units. But something had to give in light of the frenetic nature of command from a third person point of view rather than from the traditional RTS bird's eye view. But poor interface design doesn't justify shallow game play. BWii ends up feeling stiff and one dimensional.
That said, the overall look strikes a good balance between cute and realistic (and you can view the great concept art as you open up the various factions throughout the campaign) but the graphic experience in BWii will not leave you breathless. That's okay; this is a Wii game after all. But Wii games are supposed to make up for in fun what they lack in beauty. This one falls short on both counts. It can certainly be fun, especially if you liked the first one or even "Tanks" on WiiPlay, but just be patient and wait for the price drop. Fifty bucks is too much for this one.

Medal of Honor Airborne Review

I'm really into military/war type games, so I decided to give this one a shot. And I really like this game. It's a bit harder than the older MOH games, however, game play is interesting! You actually get dropped out of planes for each mission, you can land anywhere you like! You can land with your teammates, or you can land behind enemy lines, it's up to you....Each time you play the game it's always different, which is kind of refreshing in today's world of video games.
Weapons are your standard 1940's weapons (American & German), grenades, M1 Garand, bazooka, etc etc
While I do find the controls a bit awkward right now, I'm sure after some time I'll get used to them. I must say the graphics are very nice, weapons are very true to life, game play is very smooth...
Overall, great game, with HOURS upon HOURS of replay value. Remember: Each time you play, it's totally different.

Star Wars Republic Commando Review

Star Wars Republic Commando

Republic Commando is a fun, albeit short, game. When I heard it was being developed, I really wasn't interested -- the premise didn't enthuse me. But after trying the demo, I was very impressed. The squad-based play is simple, but effective, and the AI is very well done. Aside from a few instances where I thought the AI should be behaving differently, your computer-controlled squadmates are very capable and realistic for non-human players. In fact, during the few sequences in the game in which you are seperated from them, I felt...alone. The lack of their presence was really felt in the flow of the game. Very well done. The gameplay is fast paced and exciting (though a bit short), the voice acting is superb, and I was surprised by how long into the game I was before dialog from the squadmates repeated -- there's enough of it that you'll play awhile before hearing a line repeated. There's also a fair amount of humor in the game. And the characters of your squadmates are also well done -- they each have a distinct personallity, which makes the game more enjoyable. I finished the game tonight and am ready to start playing through it again. A lot of fun.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy Review

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I realize it's marketed as "Jedi Knight 3", but this is in every possible way an expansion to Outcast. It doesn't really continue the JK story, and it has almost the exact same engine and force powers and weapons, etc, with very little modified. Movement is identical, etc. If you played Outcast, you'll be right at home immediately.
That said, this is one of, if not the, best games I've ever played. Every modification it makes to the Outcast engine is an improvement, however small they are. As with the original Jedi Knight, you now get to choose what Force Powers to receive (to a certain extent...half are given to you, half are by choice), and you also get to choose light or dark side at a certain point in the game. All of the JO multiplayer powers are now in single player, plus one extra (that lets you see people through walls and stuff like that), and all of the weapons return, plus a jaw-dropping new version of the Concussion Rifle from JK.
The most important change, though, is in the format of the game itself - instead of a linear progression of levels, there are three sets of five levels, within which you may do the levels in any order. Between each set is a plot-advancing mandatory mission. In each set of five, you only need to complete four, so you can continue on if one of them stumps you, but you'll miss getting another force star (one per level you play). For the first set, your core powers (jump, push, pull, sense, lightsaber defense, lightsaber offense, lightsaber throw, and speed) are at level one, for the second set they're all at level two, and for the third set and the whole endgame, they're all at level three. This means you get a HUGE amount of game in which you are an uber-Jedi, unlike Outcast in which you only had two levels at full power.
Also, this means that instead of having long missions with multiple parts, the game mostly consists of small "vignette" levels, short and sweet. There are good and bad sides to this, the bad being that you don't feel as involved with the storyline, but the good being that there is INSANE variety in level design. Almost every planet looks different, and levels range from working your way down a speeding train to escaping from jail (lightsaber-less) to leaping back and forth across a giant chasm that a jedi temple has been built into (and since been turned into ruins). The sheer variety of visual and gameplay styles is mind-boggling. Every major Star Wars scene or place that wasn't recreated in Outcast is back here, too, from speeder bike chases (exhilaratingly fun) to the ruined Hoth base. It's insane how much is packed in to these levels.
The best thing about JA as compared to JO, though, is that JO's first two missions sans-lightsaber are GONE. You start out the very first level with a lightsaber, and the one level where you're forced to be without it you have massive force abilities, and if you really hate it you can skip it anyway. The worst part of Outcast is gone completely, and all that's left is pure Jedi gaming goodness.
Multiplayer is also back, with a couple of new modes (including an incredibly fun 2-on-1 power duel), but fewer levels. It averages out to about the same amount of MP goodness from Outcast, not really better or worse. The improvements in this game are mostly single player.
Finally, a minute detail for most but extremely important for me, if you liked Force Lightning in the old game, your head may explode when you see this one. It blows people back, has more than double the range, and is just generally the most insane offensive ability possible. Everyone - GET FULL LIGHTNING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Overall, an absolutely incredible game, fixing everything that was wrong about Outcast, my previous favorite game of all time. The only downside is that they didn't change enough - this simply isn't a full-fledged sequel. If you liked Outcast, you'll love this, but if you didn't, give it a pass. There's nothing terribly different to change your mind.

Stars Wars: Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II & Mysteries of the Sith Review

Stars Wars: Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II and Mysteries of the Sith
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are few games which can give you a sense of . . . well, 'huge'. I don't mean an epic storyline, I mean taking you to places which are Gothic in proportions and Wagnerian in scope. Jedi Knight is one of those games. In the first level, you are in a bar which resides in the center of Nar Shadaa, the Vertical City, a name which is well-justified when you see visuals of it. You literally stand on the edge of a 1,000 meter cliff at one point! The immense scope doesn't stop at that one level, either. Several places are just as vast, such as Baron's Hed, which has a building in it which is so tall that it takes all of ten seconds to fall from it(if you use the flying cheat and go to the top of it). You also experience caverns which could comfortably enclose an aircraft carrier, aqueducts suspended above a Grand Canyon, and a fuel station that could have been one of Exxon's major oil reserves. All in all, the levels are reason enough to purchase the game and experience it.
The imagination of the game's story isn't what it could have been, but it served the game well enough. The unprecedented ability to pick up a lightsaber and go toe-to-toe with a Dark Jedi more than makes up for that. You also have to battle enemies like AT-STs, railgun-toting stormtroopers, and turbolaser turrets.
Another interesting area for this game is the live-action cutscenes. Very few games do this, mainly because of financial reasons, and most of the ones which utilize them suffer in other areas. Not so with Jedi Knight. It has them, and it also has great storyline and gameplay, a winning combination.
The last glowing area for this game is the ability to gain Force powers. Now, I know that most games today in which you are a Jedi you can get Force powers, but Jedi Knight is the only one yet which assigns you light side or dark side points based on your actions: if you only harm 'bad guys' you gain light side points, but if you start to harm civilians you gain dark side points, and the accumulation of either one results in either a light side or dark side ending, which I think is pretty cool.
All-in-all, an excellent game.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Review

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Force Unleashed is a fun game that suffers from a variety of technical problems and programming short cuts that obviously indicate that the game was pushed out the door. Pros:
+ The Graphics are great for a PSP game.
+ The game is fairly long and has a lot of replay value with the main story, Force Duels, Order 66 (survival mode), and Historical missions.
+ Lots of unlockables. Unlockable characters/costumes for both Force Duel and Main story, arenas, upgradable force powers, lightsaber colors and hilts, and art galleries.
+ 1 on 1, 1 on 2, and 1 on 3 battles with Jedi are awesome. Probably the best part of the game.
+ Force powers are fun to use.
Cons:
- Programming short cuts appear throughout the game. To mention a couple, some menus you can use both the analog and d-pad while others you can only use the analog stick. Another was that you can unlock various characters to use in story mode but all cutscenes are unviewable if you choose to use them. 2 issues with this. One, cutscene are rendered real-time so to put these characters into the cutscene it only requires a couple of lines of code to switch the character image. Two, at least they could have defaulted back to the apprentice instead of killing the cutscenes altogether.
- Camera is bad. You cannot move the camera at all and it is slow to readjust to your movements.
- Lightsaber combat is a little weak. Limited Hack and slash similar to Core Crisis. Force powers make up for this but it would have been nice for a little deeper lightsaber combat.
- The game freezes A LOT during both gameplay and cutscenes. This is either due to amateur programmers or a lack of QC. It is really unforgivable to produce a game for a console that freezes this often. While it doesn't kill the gameplay, it can get really annoying at times. The worst is that it lags during the opening when the Title appears on the screne (I have a PSP SLIM).
Overall, when it works it is great. While the camera problems and the constant freezing to load (it really does get bad) hurt the game, it never really kills to fun. If you can get by that it is really an enjoyable game. Hopefully Krome/LA will release a patch to at least take care of the freezing problem.
