Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter Review

Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this game, I thought this game would have something to do with Star Wars (since there was a game called Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and I thought this was it), so I was a little disappointed to find out that this didn't have anything to do with Star Wars. Still, I tried it out, and much to my surprise, I warmed up to it and it turned out to be a lot of fun.
Pros:
* Levels are HUGE! The engine also deals with levels in one go, so you have minimal loading times when moving from place to place within the level.
* Graphics are actually pretty good. Models are done well and texture work is great.
* Like I said, it reminds me a lot of Halo, the HUD display is similar as is the font and color on the HUD, and like Halo, Mace is fitted with a shield that depletes and recharges, and if you're hit when the shield is down, that is when you actually lose health.
* The AI is actually pretty good.
* Weapons are plentiful, and they are powerful, especially the chaingun that you carry with you almost throughout the whole game.
* Saving the best for last, my favorite aspect of this game is the space sections. You've got a powerful ship and you have space dogfights in between missions, and you fly to your destination in each level, so you can dock and leave at your pleasure. What's more, the landing and taking off at locations is seamless, meaning there's no loading in between using the ship or playing on foot.
Cons:
* No multiplayer. After experiencing the weapon's sheer power and the space dogfights, I would have LOVED to have those dogfights with friends of mine. The lack of multiplayer is a big bummer, at least for me. Co-Op in this game would have been awesome.
* Levels, while huge, can become repetitive at times, in that you feel like you walk into a new room and feel like it's exactly the same room that you just left, although I will admit it's not as awfully repetitive as in Halo (anyone remember the Library level? It felt like FOREVER!).
* The story is pretty weak, and the voice acting is pretty weak too, especially from Mace Griffin, thoroughly unconvincing. It's funny, since they made a big deal on the cover about Henry Rollins providing Mace's voice, and while I'd never heard of the guy before, he didn't do a great job.
I feel like I've not done the game justice. Overall, it is a great game, and I would play it at least once more (finished it a couple weeks ago), and I'd recommend this game for the space dogfight sections alone. It's fun, don't get me wrong, just expect a lot of exploring and a lot of shooting. While that's never a bad thing, there must be a limit of how far you have to walk to accomplish your objectives... :)

just like the other metal slug games but new weapons, new enemies, new characters, and new vehicles. Basically all it is is part 7 from the DS version but on the PSP with the same options. It is much like the arcade version with the animated blood which lacks on the DS version, and has better graphics than the DS version. I recommend you buy the PSP version instead of the DS version its much better.

Story Thanks to the reconstruction proceeding at a miraculous pace, the scars of destruction to the thoroughly destroyed headquarters of the regular army and its surrounding city were becoming less and less noticeable. But just then, a video transmission arrives at HQ. Discovered in the clip is a brief flash of a figure appearing to be one of Morden\'s soldiers. HQ swiftly organizes a six-man covert strike force assigned with the following objectives: confirm the presence of Morden\'s forces, and eliminate them—with extreme prejudice. Marco, Tarma, Eri, and Fio are quickly assembled as the initial members for this mission. Ralf and Clark, who had previously thrown in their lots with Marco and company, are also soon on board. So begins our heroes infiltration of Garbage Island, perhaps the final lair of Morden\'s Forces. But will this be the last gasp of the dreaded General Donald Morden? We shall see.

Naval Assault: The Killing Tide Review

Naval Assault: The Killing Tide

First I would like to applaud 505 for backing this game as said before by others there is a lack of Naval games on the Xbox 360 but unfortunately this one is not worth 43.99. They should change the main vessel to a PT boat not a sub. When you dive your sub you only dive as deep as the game lets you. There is no manual depth setting; diving simply takes you 100 ft down and that is it. There is no sitting on the bottom or Thermal gradients to dive under to evade sonar. In short there is ZERO strategy in this game; it is shoot, dive, wait, surface, shoot, and dive..... lather, rinse, and repeat. The graphics are POOR for a Xbox360 game and the voices or crew are a joke; apparently YOU do it all: shoot the torps and deck gun as the crew is yelling good shot Captn. LAME!!!
Bottom line this game is VERY disappointing this game is an updated version of sub hunt on the Intellevision. I mean Silent Service on the NES was better and that is so very SAD. Wait for this one on the clearance rack.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam - Expansion Review

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Vietnam - Expansion

I have Bad Company 2 on Steam. When I purchased the Vietnam expansion on Amazon, I simply entered the code in the Bad Company 2 main menu and Vietnam was activated without any problems. All of the content for Vietnam was apparently in the last huge patch for Bad Company 2. Vietnam is multiplayer only so those looking for a single player game have been warned. Overall, Vietnam has a different feel from BC2. The maps are huge and open, each of them are unique. There are five multiplayer maps total and all of them take place outdoors. The jungle experience and scenery is captured perfectly in this expansion. I found myself getting shot by Vietcong in rice paddies and facing intense close combat fights on jungle paths. The downside to the openness of the maps is that you will have to deal with a lot of snipers, more so than in BC2.
There are about four unique weapons for each class and the perks attained in BC2 (magnum ammo, extended mags, vehicle upgrades) are available to use. Shooting and aiming with the weapons is more difficult with just iron sights as scopes have been removed (except for sniper rifles) as well as UAVs and other high-tech equipment. It seems like the weapons do more damage also. Its pretty intense when you are facing RPK machine guns and "thumper" grenade launchers in the jungle with a beat-up M-16. This game just feels gritty and realistic.
I'm enjoying this expansion, its much more challenging and realistic than BC2 and requires a fair amount of skill and teamwork. I definitely recommend it if you liked Bad Company 2.

Mafia Review

Mafia
Average Reviews:

If you like Grand Theft Auto, you will like this game. The two games certainly follow a similar approach, although there are quite significant differences (aside from the time this game is set in).
Personally, I like the graphics in Mafia better. Overall,t he whole story is told in more style, and is much more immersive IMO.
However, GTA offers more freedom while playing the game. Mafia offers a lot of freedom too, but in order to fulfill missions, one usually sticks to one path. Some people told me they don't like that as much. Personally, I like the Mafia gameplay at least as good as the GTA gameplay. Sure, GTA gives you a mission such as "destroy this car", and you have a million ways to accomplish that. Mafia gives you a mission such as "have this race car manipulated", and naturally, there is one place to pick it up, and one place to bring it to have the work done.
While you play the game however, that difference doesn't matter very much. In fact, Mafia provides a somewhat tighter storyline to provide a more detailed, intriguing story. I personally prefer that.
Mafia also seems to have a bit more variety in the missions. They have everything from missions on foot where you shoot 1st person style, to driving missions, to even races.
I like the controls in Mafia much better than GTA. In GTA, things never seem quite right. The controls used don't work truely well when you are an foot, and they don't work very well in the cars either. But they kinda work for both. In Mafia, you use the regular FPS-style keyboard and mouse combination when you walk, and a whole different set of controls when you drive. In fact, a (force feedback) steering wheel works very well in Mafia, while I found it to work not too well at all in GTA.

This third-person 3-D action game takes place in a fictional city named Lost Heaven--a cross between New York and Chicago--and is about the daily life of a gangster from the '30s. More than 60 vehicles are available to drive through the 12 miles of environment; stop your car and get out whenever and wherever your want. Use weapons such as a Tommy gun, a Smith & Wesson model 27 Magnum, a pump-action shotgun, a baseball bat, or Molotov cocktails. Seven multiplayer modes are available via LAN or over the Internet, including Deathmatch and Capture the Flag.

Medal of Honor Airborne Review

Medal of Honor Airborne

I know a lot of gamers are getting tired of the same old and oft-repeated WW2 shooters. But the criticisms I've heard about this game hardly seem justified. The graphics are crisp with good frame rates and smooth play. The AI soldiers seem to react in a far more efficient and realistic manner. Also there are some great new wrinkles.
Two new features I love are the character and weapon development. The idea of incorporating character skill development into a WW2 shooter is fantastic, and while things like weapon upgrades aren't--of course--very realistic, they add an enjoyable new dimension to the gameplay. Also, parachuting into combat is really cool.
So far, I've found the control layout to be smooth and efficient--not always a given with this series. Another plus is the far less linear nature of the missions and combat. Instead of simply moving from point A to B and so on, you're generally just given a set of mission objectives and then left to work them out on your own--with far more opportunity for using terrain and flanking options to achieve success.
All in all, a very satisfying purchase and the first true next-gen WW2 shooter.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D (Jewel Case) Review

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D (Jewel Case)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those of you who have played X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, or any of the classic sims, take note: this is NOT a simulation. This game is solid proof that LucasArts Star Wars products aren't Star Wars canon, as evidenced by the occasional wrong-colored projectile in comparison to how they appear in the movies. That said, it is a very nice shoot-em-up, set in the Star Wars universe.
As it says on the box, this is a 3-D shoot-em-up, and the graphics are quite impressive. Most of the things you see that you would want to blow up, you can, and they explode into big bright fireballs with chunks of shrapnel and debris. You will also get to trip up AT-ATs, which is what I've wanted to do for a long time. As far as I know, the only other game that let you do that was Super Empire Strikes Back (SNES) and that wasn't nearly as graphically imposing as Rogue Squadron is.
The game is single play only, and for obvious reasons. It is very much an arcade game, from your too-rapid fire to the relatively [dumb] enemies (a.k.a. things to nuke) and the explosions that are way bigger than they should be. For some missions, your ships are modified to carry different (more devastating, of course) weapons, some of which- for those who have played SW sims or have passing knowledge of the spacecraft- really shouldn't be possible. Of course, anything that helps you wipe out bigger swaths of Imperial bootlickers is more than welcome.
The various ships have different strengths and weaknesses, and some missions require you to use a particular one. One of my complaints is that you are often stuck with the snowspeeder, which although fun to use against AT-ATs, gets a bit old after a while. You would think you could knock over AT-ATs with proton torpedoes too, but they are apparently invincible to such attacks in this game. More open-ended missions allow you to use other craft depending on your rank and how far you have progressed in the game. You can also fly the Naboo starfighter once you have completed a mission unless it's one that specifies the speeder. Despite its being about thirty years older than any of the other ships, it holds up remarkably well in battle.
As with most arcade games, your lasers are unlimited but your special weapons- bombs or warheads- are not. You get promoted by several factors: time in mission, accuracy, enemies killed, and other bonuses. For a certain mark, you'll get a bronze medal. Next comes a silver, and then a gold- just like the Olympics. This promotion is important, because it lets you go back and cream the Imperials with more powerful (or at least different) starfighters, which is about the only replay factor in this game. For those of you that can barely keep your nose out of the dirt, there are cheats available to unlock all the ships. The problem with replaying missions is that the objectives don't change, you'll know exactly what to look for and do ahead of time, and the new ships aren't really going to make much of a difference. It is a bit fun to see the nicely detailed models flying over the very nicely done terrains, however.
Through the course of the game, you'll visit many Star Wars worlds, most of which are only mentioned in the movies or the books. The maps are relatively large, but outside their playing field area, there's usually nothing but flat land (you can't go there, anyway). Your pilots and Luke- who you are supposed to be playing as- sometimes make chatter, but it's usually repetitive. You also magically respawn when you die, up to three times per mission. There is no penalty for picking up where you left off at your last crash.
On the difficulty side- some of the missions were really tough, but simply because there were too many enemies to mow down or the things you had to protect were too easy to kill. If you are tasked to guard something, NEVER leave it for long, or some lucky Imperial will blow them all away. The enemy AI is pretty lousy- TIE fighters will shoot at nowhere in particular just because you're nearby, and maneuver as if their pilots can barely keep the things in the air. Sometimes, they literally can't- I've seen TIEs plow straight into a hill for no particular reason. Your allies aren't much better. If you want anything done, it's definitely going to be you that does it. I rarely ever got hit by enemy starfighters, it was the gun and missile emplacements that were the real danger.
As for problems, ground units are often a pain to attack, because your guns have a strange inability to depress beyond a certain point. I also experienced two mysterious and highly annoying deficiencies with the engine. The first was that the view would occasionally change without me asking it to- zooming out until I could barely see anything. This is solvable by switching views until it comes back, but it's annoying to have to do in the midst of a battle. The second was that in cockpit mode, the movement got very jerky. Of course, cockpit mode is little more than eye candy, as the cockpit doesn't show much of importance and blocks out big parts of your view. My other big complaint was the sensor- which is quite nearly useless. It doesn't give you much indication of where you should be going, no indication of whether the enemy is in the air or on the ground, and nothing about the type of vehicle you're chasing after. Then again, this isn't X-Wing, so I suppose that's forgivable.
Aside from the few technical issues, stability is excellent and the missions are almost completely action. There is little in the way of brain power necessary for this game, and even those who might have trouble with the Star Wars sims should be able to tackle Rogue Squadron. For the price, this is a good deal of fun. Especially if you're a Star Wars fan, you should definitely check this out.

Star Wars Battlefront (Mac) Review

Star Wars Battlefront (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Star Wars Battlefront - especially due to the notorious lack of a broad variety of games for the Mac - is a great game. Of course, you need a 128 MB Ram Video Card to enjoy all the little bits and pieces, but in general it is the kind of easy play you would like to have after work...
...but dare you to play the game on holidays - like I did. I got it in the morning - and got instantly addicted to it. I played it on "medium" difficulty. Not eight hours later, I was done with both Solo-Campaigns and the good side "galactic conquer". On this speed I will have completed the game within another 2-3 hours.
Then I will be forced of either playing it again (difficulty: hard) or do instant action games...
So, Star Wars Battlefront is a must for the Mac (if you have the "recommended hardware" to fully enjoy it). BUT it is neither a real challenge for the experienced gamer nor a long-lasting investment. Five for being a Star Wars with great graphics and the great shooter - but four in total.
And by the way, in case you have purchased the game and found yourself with an invalid registration code on the back: don't panic. On the Aspyr Homepage (Battlefront, Support) you will find an auto-completion tool.

I got the chance to get my hands on the full version, and I can easily say this is another quality game from LucasArts! Combine some of the best new first-person shooters with Rogue Squadron, and this is what you have here.
You get to play as either a Rebel or Imperial in various famous Star Wars locations from all the movies (and books/games too). There are different types of characters, from soldiers to snipers to special forces.
The first person controls are excellent, but I found flying the aircraft (eg: X-Wing, Tie) to be a little difficult with the mouse and keyboard, but you might get the hang of it after some practice.
You get to control various vehicles and ships too, such as X-Wings, Ties, Gunships, Speeder Bikes, AT-STs, and AT-ATs. Nothing beats driving an AT-AT in snowy Hoth bearing down on Rebel scum, watching them run as you pick them off. You feel the slowness and how heavy the AT-AT is as you drive it. On the other hand, you feel the pure speed of a speeder bike on Endor as the backgroud blurs while you fly through the forest. Great sense of speed there.
The graphics are very good. Not on the level of the newest such as Doom3, but are top notch. And you have the classic Star Wars sound effects and music tracks that are unforgetable.
If you are a Star Wars fan and a gamer, this won't disappoint.

Star Wars Republic Commando Review

Star Wars Republic Commando
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Republic Commando is a fun, albeit short, game. When I heard it was being developed, I really wasn't interested -- the premise didn't enthuse me. But after trying the demo, I was very impressed. The squad-based play is simple, but effective, and the AI is very well done. Aside from a few instances where I thought the AI should be behaving differently, your computer-controlled squadmates are very capable and realistic for non-human players. In fact, during the few sequences in the game in which you are seperated from them, I felt...alone. The lack of their presence was really felt in the flow of the game. Very well done. The gameplay is fast paced and exciting (though a bit short), the voice acting is superb, and I was surprised by how long into the game I was before dialog from the squadmates repeated -- there's enough of it that you'll play awhile before hearing a line repeated. There's also a fair amount of humor in the game. And the characters of your squadmates are also well done -- they each have a distinct personallity, which makes the game more enjoyable. I finished the game tonight and am ready to start playing through it again. A lot of fun.

Rebel Strike is the third game of the great Rogue Squadren series. This one seems to be the best yet. Unlike the other two games, you are now able to fight utilizing vehicles, blasters and lightsabers. New Vehicles were also added such as the Tie Bomber, Tie Hunter, Jedi Starfighter and the list goes on! The replay value is unbelievable and the graphics breathtaking! Did I mention it also has multiplayer and co-op? IF anyone has written a review claimiing that Rogue Leader is better, there dead wrong as you can play all the missions of Rogue Leader in co-op! This is one of the best games for any console right now.
